Utilities Spectrum is throttling my internet

Years ago with Cox, I qualified for the connect2compete program, So internet has been $10 a month for me for at least a decade, and was lucky enough that they never asked for any follow-up documentation to prove that I still qualify, so I've been staying off of Cox's radar as best I can

Now that spectrum has taken over, the first bill under spectrum went through last week, and I have never experienced my Internet being so slow... I thought there was something wrong with my computer. Ran all the updates, even got with my work's IT department, and it is definitely internet speed

Anyway, looking to switch ISP's. Going to lose my smoking deal, but this is affecting my productivity at work. Any recommendations? Might just do starlink so that way I can be portable

Why not call your current first? Maybe they can fix it and you can keep your deal? If they can't then you were already gonna find a new one anyway. Just play dumb

100%. Just call and say my internet is slow. Can you help me?

Chances are it is throttled, but maybe it’s not and it’s a network problem, and you will lose your internet deal of a lifetime.

It 100% is they want everyone to sign up a new contract with spectrum theyll keep slowing it down until you call

I'm sure your work IT department already walked through all of this but....

Reboot your cable modem. Reboot your router (or just reboot the one if it is a single device).

Hardwire your laptop directly to the router.

Try a few different speed test services. If you get anywhere near about 80 mbps download speeds then you are not getting throttled.

Also, just call Spectrum if your speed is truly being throttled. They may just fix it on the spot. They may offer you another plan that fits your needs. All else fails say you want to cancel and they may give you a good deal.

I had zero problems and the moment spectrum took over my service is shit and they are trying to get me to “upgrade.”

We need a class action lawsuit.

I wonder how common this is. I switched to a spectrum plan and have had zero issues.

Had cox, now spectrum, offered me 2 gig symmetric over the phone for 5 dollars more after I called them about some billing discrepancies on their end. Said a tech would be out to install. No tech. Equipment comes in the mail. Okay then. Spend an hour and half on the phone with customer service. Equipment doesnt work. Then they need to wait 2 days to send a technician out. Fml. They basically told me to kick rocks after my house wouldn't have internet access for two days while my wife is sick at home and I'm working 12 hour shifts at a hospital on night shift. Still waiting for a "supervisor" to call me back. They gave me the run around and kept me on hold even though they knew no one was there. So far they're really missing me off.

Oh and the kicker is my internet package hasn't changed whatsoever. I had to explain about the deal I was offered otherwise why the fuck would I order new equipment?

i didn’t switch to a spectrum plan because the deal i just did with cox in the spring is $10 cheaper than the same plan from spectrum and spectrum can’t match it. since the takeover ive been experiencing wayyyy more buffering in the last 2ish months than ive had in the 3 years ive been with cox

Careful with Starlink, they’re known for throttling after a few months too.

They’ll also shut down your service if you start bombing Russian data centers

Yea isn’t that after 5 terabytes of internet usage though? Nobody unless torrenting can rip that much

Between everyone in my house we are regularly over 5tb with streaming and gaming and work. It’s really easy to go over

Not one single person. Households regularly contain more than 1 internet user.

Starlink isnt going to work very well in the city i move disconnects from them everyday. Then your stuck with all their equipment you had to pay for and its not cheap also if you work from home i would be worried about being labeled as a business the starlink sub has been pretty upset with them lately. If you have quantum in your area its $70 for a gig up and down or even wyrrd on the west side i believe is also about the same

When Spectrum took over Cox I switched hed the plan from 500 to 1 gig down. It was great until about a week ago a spectrum truck was in the neighborhood. First down the street then infront of my house and later further down. My internet went out 2 or 3 times for 2 days. By the 3rd day I have to keep rebooting my modem every 5 or 6 hours to get connectivity. Idk if it's coincidence that these issues started after that spectrum truck was in my neighborhood. When it was cox I might lose connectivity about 1 every 3 or 4 months for a few minutes.

Thats just a Cox truck with a Spectrum wrap. Infrastructure and field ops employees are all legacy Cox in old Cox areas.

If you haven't updated your router in a while, that would be a big part of it right there. Also, look up resetting your network stack, that may help.

I am so glad I was able to switch to Wyyred before Spectrum took over Cox.

We were gonna switch also (actually we have always wanted to switch but, like in many places, Cox has monopoly around here), but we saw that spectrum had their prices lowwer, so we went online and got to double our speed for about $15 cheaper than what we currently pay.

ATT air has given me zero drama

So I was with cox for years and spectrum years before. I made the jump to Starlink and I cannot recommend it enough. I’m a student in grad school, I play PC games daily and my girlfriend watches whatever she wants on streaming services and honestly I’ve had 0 issues. The benefits of it being portable and being online when the power goes out ( portable charger) or just staying online when local internet shuts down. Idk I think it’s been a game changer and it’s cheaper I paid $85 for cox now just $55 for starlink
