Chet Hanks comes off as Chet Hanks.

Theres a reason hes the black sheep of the family. Tom got him and Colin into the industry with a major leg up. Unlike Colin, Chet thought everybody owed him something. By all accounts an incredibly difficult person with a fragile ego. That's why now he just lives off the fact he is "Tom Hanks Son" and has no talent or outlet.

He doesn’t really seem like the black sheep though? He seems super close with his parents. I think the household that Tom’s kids with first wife were raised in and Tom’s kids with Rita were raised in were just incredibly different.

That's still a surprising thing I learnt from Tom, Colin and Chet's interviews through the years.

Chet grew up very close to his parents in spite of Tom Hanks's frequent absence (due to work). He felt he had a happy childhood until his teens. His parents handled his teenage antics badly, which created more problems. This caused tension between them until he became a father himself. He feels close to them nowadays. He once said his parents were great with his daughter.

Tom Hanks recalled paying Chet and younger son Truman to do chores and scolded them when they didn't do them well when they were kids.

Colin rarely talks about his childhood and family, but did say that while growing up, he didn't know Tom Hanks and stepmother Rita Wilson that well, due to his living arrangements and Tom's frequent absence due to work. Note: His younger sister, Elizabeth, believed she was much closer to Tom and Rita and wanted to live with them when she was a child.

It wasn't until his mother's death (he was 25 and his sister was 20) that he got to know Tom and Rita better. He once mentioned that his children's middle names were a tribute to his mother and his wife. That's all he was willing to say so far. Like I said, he rarely talks about his family.

Tom Hanks rarely mentioned Colin and his sister when he talked about raising Chet and Truman, but acknowledged that he felt guilty for failing to be a good father to his oldest children during the early years of his career and early post-divorce years. He later sought therapy to work through his guilt. He seemed to have made peace with it all.

I didn't know all that, I guess I assumed that since Colin Hanks is his mini me, he was 100% raised by his dad.

Colin opens The most about his childhood in his Marc Maron episode. Man. I miss that podcast.

Oh I haven't heard of that episode. Thanks for the heads up.

(edit: I used 'podcast' instead of the intended word 'episode'.)

It's kinda funny because that was like, the original big podcast.

I meant the episode, not the podcast itself. Brain slip, sorry.

Chet has a history of substance abuse which softens me, but this does not appear to be the actions of a sober person 😞

When someone struggles — socially, mentally, publicly — it doesn’t mean their family stops loving them or maintaining closeness with them. Look at Hunter Biden. Sometimes all “black sheep” means is that a person is a notably “different” member of their family of origin.

I would argue that Chet is actually seems similar in many ways to Rita. She can be a bit of an attention seeker, but it’s never with the antagonism or violence that seems to surface from within him. He seems like such an angry person, and impudently, blissfully entitled that it makes him seem diametrically opposed to the rest of his family PR-wise, even though they all seem to love and accept each other. So, I think “black sheep” fits in that it can just mean “different.”

People are just talking shit. He’s on Running Point, it’s not like he washed out entirely.

Still, this is unsurprising

Haven’t seen the second season, but between the first and what I saw of him in Your Honor, Chet Hanks is actually pretty good at playing Chet Hanks.
