u/xombae Kelly Clarkson has put us in danger 10d ago
I tell this story any time Eric Andre is mentioned because it adds to the mystery that is Eric Andre.
Years ago my boyfriend and I were hanging out with a friend in Toronto, and he decided to show us this hilarious underground show called The Eric Andre show, which we had never heard of. We stayed up all night drinking and doing coke and nearly pissing ourselves laughing watching everything he had ever made.
The sun started to rise and we decided we needed to reup on coke, so we headed out into the world. We were walking up Queen Street and no one was around, and we were still laughing and quoting The Eric Andre show.
We then notice we're approaching a couple leaning against a wall. We get closer and I swear on my fucking life, it's Eric Andre making out with the hottest chick I've ever seen.
That evening I went from having no idea who he was, to being his biggest fan, to seeing him in the flesh.
We were in such disbelief, all we could say was "Bird up" and laugh hystericaly and we probably looked like losers, but in my mind Eric Andre is an entity of pure comedy who appears just when you need him most.

Nothing says emotional stability like grabbing someone from behind!
Seriously, if he confronted him in person verbally and that was that, it would be one thing. You have a right to defend yourself against an insult. But getting physical AT ALL just escalates everything so unnecessarily

Holy misplaced empathy. Chet has no one to blame but himself. All he has to do is nearly anything he wants.
Feel bad for random real people on camera in unfortunate situations. Do not feel bad for a nobody desperately trying to be famous because of entitlement.
Think about the millions of people with real fucking problems - which they have through virtually no fault of their own - instead.

Why can't people just be cool.
Like approach Eric and shake hands, say whatsup and with a big smile say "hey last time I heard you said I'm emotionally disturbed, what the fuck man I thought we were cool!" and almost be laughing as you say it to show him you're not hostile.
Coming in friendly and forgiving puts the other person in a position where anything other than an "awh shit I'm sorry if I said that man" makes them look like a dickhead

His Jamaican accent imitation along with subsequent things he did or said sort of sealed the deal on him being a douche. He’s got no one to blame but himself.
The fact that he’s still so pressed over a comedian making fun of him to the media 3 years ago, so much so that he had to “confront” the comedian about it….. that once again says more about Chet than it does about Eric. Most people would be able to let it go but not insecure narcissists. I’m sure Chet’s jealous that Eric can afford bodyguards cause people recognize him and he’s famous. Chet wouldn’t know what that’s like.
Eric not remembering the comment makes this even funnier. 🤣 I wonder if he’ll mention this in future gigs? Chet’s just dug himself into a deeper hole now! Lol
Edit: Chet is 36 years old??? This video gives 12-year old energy. Dude needs to grow up and move out of his parents’ pool house already.

Might be time for Eric Andre to get a new security detail, MFer went right up to him and grabbed his neck
546
u/loungesinger 10d ago edited 10d ago
There was a security guy one step behind and one step to the right of Eric. The security guy clocked Chet immediately and placed his hands on Chet’s arms/shoulders (seemingly as a warning to Chet and/or to position himself so he could use force on Chet, if needed). The security guy waits a while but then steps in between Chet and Eric once the encounter became less friendly.
I’m willing to bet Eric has instructed his guys to play it cool until there’s a sign of trouble. In other words, Eric doesn’t want his security to body slam a guy who is just casually tapping Eric in the shoulder or trying to shake his hand or whatever. There are reasons for this. There are liability issues. Eric could be liable to someone who has been injured by his security detail (provided they used excessive violence in a situation that a reasonable person would find harmless). Also, Eric has to think about his image — he won’t be seen as likable if his security beat people up all the time for no reason.

Chet Hanks comes off as Chet Hanks.
Theres a reason hes the black sheep of the family. Tom got him and Colin into the industry with a major leg up. Unlike Colin, Chet thought everybody owed him something. By all accounts an incredibly difficult person with a fragile ego. That's why now he just lives off the fact he is "Tom Hanks Son" and has no talent or outlet.
→ More replies (14)41
u/Curlingby 10d ago
He doesn’t really seem like the black sheep though? He seems super close with his parents. I think the household that Tom’s kids with first wife were raised in and Tom’s kids with Rita were raised in were just incredibly different.

u/west2night 10d ago
That's still a surprising thing I learnt from Tom, Colin and Chet's interviews through the years.
Chet grew up very close to his parents in spite of Tom Hanks's frequent absence (due to work). He felt he had a happy childhood until his teens. His parents handled his teenage antics badly, which created more problems. This caused tension between them until he became a father himself. He feels close to them nowadays. He once said his parents were great with his daughter.
Tom Hanks recalled paying Chet and younger son Truman to do chores and scolded them when they didn't do them well when they were kids.
Colin rarely talks about his childhood and family, but did say that while growing up, he didn't know Tom Hanks and stepmother Rita Wilson that well, due to his living arrangements and Tom's frequent absence due to work. Note: His younger sister, Elizabeth, believed she was much closer to Tom and Rita and wanted to live with them when she was a child.
It wasn't until his mother's death (he was 25 and his sister was 20) that he got to know Tom and Rita better. He once mentioned that his children's middle names were a tribute to his mother and his wife. That's all he was willing to say so far. Like I said, he rarely talks about his family.
Tom Hanks rarely mentioned Colin and his sister when he talked about raising Chet and Truman, but acknowledged that he felt guilty for failing to be a good father to his oldest children during the early years of his career and early post-divorce years. He later sought therapy to work through his guilt. He seemed to have made peace with it all.

Total armchair psych analysis
I think Chet has something going on with him, maybe something like ADHD where his impulse control is very bad. He was such a troublemaker as a teen that his parents, who had all the money in the world, sent him to one of those teenage work camps. The ones where they “kidnap” your kid in the night, and then make them do labor in the desert. They claim to “straighten out troubled teens” but really it’s just abuse.
The fact that they would do that to him makes me think that Chet was never understood or helped as a kid. There’s no such thing as a “bad” kid imo. Much much more likely, a kid who is really struggling due to some underlying issue they desperately need help with.
Chet didn’t get that help and this is what you end up with.
19
u/Accomplished_Bake939 10d ago
What kind way of explaining his behaviors. I find folks are always so quickly to label a kid as a "bad kid" without realizing that's it's more a great kid that needs help and support.
→ More replies (4)15
u/catslugs 10d ago
agree, and families that have it "together" and seem sweet and stable often don't know how to handle when one of their kids comes out troubled or has some kind of problem - they don't get why they can't just 'act normal' and it ends up becoming so much worse

I feel like naming him Chet didn’t exactly set things off in the right direction.

Right?! I'm 42 years old. I've known about Tom Hanks for like 30 years. I know Collin Hanks. I had no clue he had a douche son named Chet. That cant be Rita Wilson's kid, right?

I think this is just inevitably what happens when you name your son Chet

Tom wasn’t involved with Colin growing up, right? It was a kid from a different woman, not Rita Wilson. His mom wanted him to grow up normal or something. I dunno read that a long time ago

Colin & Elizabeth's mother was a neglectful drug addict with severe mental health issues. She was so abusive to Elizabeth as a teenager that Tom was actually able to get full custody of her and as a result, she's much closer to Rita and her kids than Colin is. She actually wrote about it in a book that came out last year, using the pen name E.A. Hanks.

Some men really never grow up, huh. Mentally disturbed? More like mentally deranged. Eric was light on him. He's fucking deranged.

Christ, that's just proof of how right Eric was about Chet.
EVERYTHING he does is aggressive, from the way he was holding Eric's shoulder, his posture, his face...yikes! And then the way Chet goes back to his little posse like, "Yeah, I straightened his a@@ out" and they are all going, "That's my man!"
Pathetic.
