Total armchair psych analysis

I think Chet has something going on with him, maybe something like ADHD where his impulse control is very bad. He was such a troublemaker as a teen that his parents, who had all the money in the world, sent him to one of those teenage work camps. The ones where they “kidnap” your kid in the night, and then make them do labor in the desert. They claim to “straighten out troubled teens” but really it’s just abuse.

The fact that they would do that to him makes me think that Chet was never understood or helped as a kid. There’s no such thing as a “bad” kid imo. Much much more likely, a kid who is really struggling due to some underlying issue they desperately need help with.

Chet didn’t get that help and this is what you end up with.

What kind way of explaining his behaviors. I find folks are always so quickly to label a kid as a "bad kid" without realizing that's it's more a great kid that needs help and support.

u/catslugs 10d ago

agree, and families that have it "together" and seem sweet and stable often don't know how to handle when one of their kids comes out troubled or has some kind of problem - they don't get why they can't just 'act normal' and it ends up becoming so much worse

I’d also guess he hung out with the wrong crowd.

u/Madam_Mimm_13 10d ago

That’s generally the number one reason why affluent parents send their kids to these throwaway camps. Ask me how I know.

You should do an AMA

That’s so sad but you’re assesssment makes total sense. One of my friends in college was sent to one of those camps when she was in high school and it sounded so horrible, I can’t imagine.

Yeah our culture is not one that is forgiving of misbehavior. I think a lot of people end up with fucked up adult lives because they spent their whole childhoods yelled at and insulted because they couldn’t control their own undiagnosed ADHD or autism. Instead they get told they’re not trying hard enough, or that they’re a bad kid, and all their misbehavior is made out to be a moral failure instead of a diagnosable and treatable disorder.

u/TizzyBumblefluff girl what the fuck 10d ago

Yeah this whole interaction gave off impulse control difficulties. And honestly if your family is invalidating throughout your life, guess what, becoming defensive or being confrontational to “prove” your point becomes the default reaction.

The fact they did that makes me think the Hanks aren’t that great either

u/Pluck_Boy 10d ago

Some shit heads just have shit in their heads. Know what I mean?

Regardless of the cause - what we have here is an absolute insufferable douche, and in a society that tends to reward rich insufferable douches, I doubt he's ever going to change.

4

u/Big-Honeydew-961 10d ago

TIL Tom Hanks is an ableist asshole.

2

u/justusleag 10d ago

He is giving Logan and Jake Paul vibes.

2

u/DiscoLemonade1995 10d ago

He's kind of endearing honestly from the little I've seen of him, genuinely feel bad for him after watching him on the Eric Andre show

2

u/InfiniteWaffles58364 10d ago

There are some kids who really are just bad. Not many, but they exist. And after a certain amount of time, you age out of being a kid with a bad childhood into a willfully bad adult. 18 is hella early to make that transition but society expects it, which probably contributes to the problems many have at acclimating

I have seen it with fabulous parents. One or two kids awesome. One kid seriously dangerous or unstable. Chet seems to have at least one serious personality disorder.

"We" are not very advanced at diagnosing and helping people--especially as kids when it can really make a difference.

Chet Hanks is a bucket of sh!t.

The lame guy saying "No video." B!tch, you do not give me a command! People out of their minds telling others what to do.

As someone who went to one of these places, this is so true. I felt so bad. A lot of these parents literally believe the child is defective and they take 0 accountability.  They would force our parents to go to a seminar to be able to visit with us and so many of the parents were just phoning it in.

A lot of my old classmates have committed suicide. Like 6 of them, and I'm only 32.

If kids go back to a family that takes 0 responsibility for raising the child and reflecting on their own behavior as parents, it's not surprising the kid will continue to struggle. In fact, it's even worse because now people use the fact you've been sent away at all as "evidence" you're defective.

Also I say 6 is a lot because there were only 100 kids there  :( and the 6 are only the ones who committed suicide,  several have overdosed that I didn't count:(

alternative explanation: he's a little asshole raised in privilege and never had guidance or discipline, and his worst traits were allowed to define his entire personality, and he STILL is protected from real consequences.

It's actually okay to admit that some people are just dicks and assholes. It isn't always that deep. Privilege, money, enabling, lack of guidance or consequences...no surprise that he's a maladjusted leech asshole. It ain't gotta be that deep. Very few people turn out well when they're enabled, spoiled and protected from consequences for their antisocial asshole behavior.

Some people develop a sense of self awarness and find some sort of purpose in life, some don't. I don't think he's misunderstood, damaged, or has an untreated diagnosis. I don't believe that anti social assholes are ALWAYS a "victim". Normalize the idea that asshole behavior is unacceptable and consequences are socially healthy, please. PLEASE GOD. Not everyone is a victim or special snowflake just because they are a maladjusted antisocial menace.

“There’s no such thing as a bad kid” tells me that you are young and have a lot to learn

5

u/apittsburghoriginal 10d ago

What an annoying thing to say to someone. There’s the option to have a dialogue with the person if you disagree, but you just opt to talk down to them, classic Reddit moment.

By the way, the person you are commenting to is a dad with a kid.

u/noUr8eaten 10d ago

Do you know he got sent to one of those camps or are you creating a whole story about strangers?

0

u/A_Bot_A_Bot_A_Bot 10d ago

There are definitely "bad" kids. 100%. People don't become sociopaths as adults, they are born that way.

Chet's issues? No idea.

Also: those "work camps" aren't all run by sadists. There are good ones. I have no info on where Chet might have been sent or its reputation.

Being an ND in that perfect family would have driven me crazy too, speaking as a fellow ND.

u/Key-Emergency989 10d ago

I feel like naming him Chet didn’t exactly set things off in the right direction.

Right?! I'm 42 years old. I've known about Tom Hanks for like 30 years. I know Collin Hanks. I had no clue he had a douche son named Chet. That cant be Rita Wilson's kid, right?

17

u/Shovelman2001 10d ago

You weren't around for white boy summer? The quarters were zipped back then, what a time to be alive

5

u/Mtngrl303 10d ago

It is!! I just did some googling!! Chet is one of Tom and Rita’s two sons!

12

u/JacobdaTurtle61 10d ago

I think this is just inevitably what happens when you name your son Chet

5

u/bingersforall 10d ago

lol Chet is legendary

3

u/Repulsive_Ad_7973 10d ago

Actually Chet IS Rita’s child and colin is not

3

u/YourMumWasRight 10d ago

Chet accidentally doxed himself here on Reddit, seems like a decade ago? He posted to some "interesting" subs.

0

u/Yashmuck22 10d ago

Not only that, but both he and Rita have matching full back tattoos.

2

u/Oh_My_Goth_Ick 10d ago

That was a birthday joke.

5

u/KeegCorp 10d ago

You missed white boy summer???

8

u/Practical-Level-6265 10d ago

Look at Colin Hanks. He’s a lot more like what you would expect. I have no clue what happened to Chet lol

4

u/Lala5789880 10d ago

Different mom

6

u/leoromanus16 10d ago

Y'all have never heard of Shabba-Hanks????

6

u/-CgiBinLaden- 10d ago

Who cares, he's a douche canoe. Chet, I don't go to any cons, so you'll need to come to me. We can get a Firehouse Sub and talk about it.

1

u/molotovzav 10d ago

I hate to ruin your kinda vision of Tom Hanks, but he did cheat. And that cheating led to Chet. Chet is not an affair baby though. Just Tom overlapped Rita and his first wife and then married her right after his divorce. That's a lot of personal baggage being created right before Chet is born. I'm not trying to excuse his behavior but he has classic rich kid who didn't get enough attention, but had access to money instead at crucial parts of his development. I don't know celebs kids, but I do know plenty of adults who were rich kids I grew up with and a lot of them act the same.

u/Gooncookies 10d ago

Some people just get all the bad genes.

1

u/Bitter-Software9373 9d ago

1

u/Samwise777 10d ago

Rich people always produce miserable children

2

u/Dinglebop_Technician 10d ago

Colin Hanks doesn't behave this way

1

u/Samwise777 10d ago

Sure he probably keeps up a veneer of respectability

0

u/Old_Competition3094 10d ago

That's just not true

2

u/Samwise777 10d ago

Rich mom and dad huh?

1

u/UpstairsTriffle8042 10d ago

The only reason I know who he is cause he went viral for trying to be a rapper and was very cringy and saying the n-word.

-4

u/Kilokalypso 10d ago

How? How did you just find out that he as a son and with this one video decide he is a douche. With this one comment I can decide that you're an idiot.

3

u/mclazerlou 10d ago

Look at him.

2

u/Mental_Tea_5744 10d ago

But he is a douche?
