Ultra Light

Post image

I signed up for the Onyx Roasters Choice subscription and my first coffee was this Ultra Light roasted 4 days ago. This is my first Ultra Light, what’s everyone’s recommendation on brewing temp and rest time?

I don’t believe Onyx roasts ultra light in the US unless it’s a very recent change. Should be fine after 3-4 weeks if it’s like most Onyx historically has been.

They have been labelling some of their coffees ultralight in the US for at least several months now.

I want to say that I got a couple labeled that way over a year ago but it's been quite sometime since I ordered onyx. But agree I've seen it for a while.

I think people are comparing it to other roasters like norml people or shoebox. Onyx doesn’t really roast as light as them. Not unless it’s changed, I haven’t got coffee from them in a bit.

Oh, good to know. I’d have to see reviews or beans to understand how their UL labeling compares to the more common UL roasters.

If it's really ultra light I rest 8 weeks. Ime Onyx tends to be more light so 4 weeks is usually good. If you haven't tried the Aponte Village honey its fantastic!

I second the Aponte Village. Onyx does offer great coffee.

I’ll have to look into that one. I got this Ethiopian from the subscription and I also got a box of Southern Weather. Excited for both. My wonderful wife got me the Advent Box for our wedding anniversary

I did the advent last year. It was really fun. Sad they didn't do the playing cards this year. The Aponte is in the advent so you'll get to try it.

I get the ultralight from September and it’s normally about 5 weeks for them

Do you brew at a lower temp with an Ultra Light? Like 190°F?

I brew between 196-203°F 😅

Is this the Agaro Yukro Washed Ethiopian? If it is, here is the recipe we have been using in the café:
Temp:202 F
Dose: 20g
Water in: 340
Grind: pretty coarse
Brew guide for V60:

  • 60 g bloom
  • at 45sec, pour to 120
  • at 1:20, pour with heavy agitation to 340
-slight swirl to level coffee bed
Brew time: ≈3:30

December problems,  so no rush.

Damn you let it rest that long? I was thinking like 4 weeks. Bummer.

Although I haven't had onyx, from what I heard, their "ultra light" is likely not really light. But anyways, properly rest the coffee, use your usual way to brew it first and adjust from there on. Hope you enjoy it.

This agaro was good after about 4 weeks. My friend even said it can over rest or something and became too barley tea for me. I have a 10 oz bag resting myself. Had to get it after having the 2 oz sample. Mine was roasted Sept 30. Can't wait to crack it open. This has been one of my favorites all year. Don't listen to everyone about the roast level. I detected roast notes with this one.

What grind size were you doing with it? I’m running a Fellow Ode Gen 2

It's not actually UL like The Picky Chemist, H&S, Shoebox etc. More like Wendelboe, Sey, or Prodigal. You don't even need to wait a month

Would you recommend picking up a bag of Ultra Light from one of the companies you just mentioned? I’m pretty intrigued

u/FoxFurFarms 17h ago

Yeah they will take some brew adjustments but once you figure it out it's well worth it. More nice, bright, and floral flavors, less dark and roasty ones. Norml has been great too.

Well I’ll let this box sit then for awhile

You can brew a cup after 10 days just to try it. Onyx doesn’t really do ultra light roast profiles, they are light-medium. After 4 weeks it should be starting to hit its peak. I’d set your temp at around 92C or 197.6F.
