PhD students and researchers: I have a topic for you!
I'm part of a community of (former) foster parents -- many of whom have adopted kids from the foster care system.
One of the prevailing experiences is the negative effect on foster/adoptive families' mental health. We wonder (for example) on the prevalence of divorce among foster-to-adopt couples. We wonder about the persistent stress and mental and physical manifestations of the stress, as a consequence of loving and caring for deeply hurt children. (Among us we have experience many forms of child-on-parent emotional abuse and serious physical violence.) What is the impact on finances? (Many of us spend a significant amount of money accessing services that are not fully covered by state supports. Some of us have had to modify our careers to work that is more flexible so that we can be "on call" for schools and take kids to services.
Note: We all went into this journey knowing there would be an emotional, physical, and financial toll. None of us were prepared for extreme-ness of the toll, years (even decades) after adoption.
So far as we know, there has been little to no research on this topic -- most research focuses on the impacts of trauma on the kids, rather than the downstream effects on their caregivers.
