Discussion roommate help

i really need your help figuring out what to do about my apartment. My roommate has been stealing things from me and my friends, and I’ve now found my dirty underwear in his closet twice. He constantly argues with me, and whenever I confront him about things, he gets really mean and angry. He’s also been punching holes in the walls and screaming at me and I’m getting really uncomfortable living here. My lease ends October 31, and I’m panicking because I can’t afford to move somewhere else or pay to fix all the damage. I know you cosigned my lease, and I’m worried about this affecting you financially, too. I don’t want to be stuck paying for damage , but I also can’t afford to just move out. I really need your help figuring out my options before my lease ends because I don’t know how to handle this situation on my own. (this text is to my grandmother who is the co signer and will get mad about all the damages) what do i do ..

Discussion My dad moved me into a rooming house a few months ago. And to be honest, it's been really rough. I feel like I need to be everybody's everything, and can't catch a break

Sorry for a long post, but my dad was tired of me. Living with him and his brand new wife. So he moved me into a rooming house while I was out at a doctor's appointment far away. And when I came back, all my stuff was gone, and he said, you're included over there, I have a chance to clean the place mean, nobody nothing I just had to agree. I'm 28, but I'm on disability. I'm trying to work on my laptop here, but everyone has me so stressed how I can ever catch a break, which I understand we're all struggling. But there's around 10 people living in this building that was an old doctor's office. Converted into what's trying to be apartments. Everything would be great if I wasn't a voice actress and didn't have to have my might going.Because this place supposed to be soundproof I don't have money to soundproof at least my disability check going straight to rent. I've tried getting apartment from everywhere for the past six years. I'm trying very hard to get along with the people here. It's just no one even owes 1 disability, I have or why I'm 1 disability, they just know my nickname. They don't know my actual name. And my name comes in the mail, we all see it and I'm tired of everybody wanting everything for me. The second I step out of my door if I go use a bathroom first thing in the morning, people bombard me wanting to get chat, which I love people and hang out but I have to protect when I can get on food stamps. So I can't cook when everyone else is trying to cook around rush hour times like 6 PM, so I need to page it app until 2 AM getting everything done and it's just being minimal about it too everyone else here wakes app at like 5 AM I have no idea what time both of them actually go to bed, but I have narcolepsy, I can fall asleep in a second it's just I've been literally so stressed out that I'm on a good combination of pharmaceuticals, like over 5 controlled substances and nothing is helping all. And there's no way for me to run to it's just the roommates are constantly fighting with one another they fought with me before, but I've made amends with everyone and everyone likes me for pretty much. Except it always turns into a money or food fight somehow every day. So nobody can help me wash dishes. Because I don't have a worker right now for medicaid.\n And I often Don't eat most days and I really feel like I'm deteriorating here. My dad will come and help me. But only if I call him in the morning and no one understands, I have narcolepsy, I'm usually not really optiming until late in the evening which I don't wanna be I wanna go to bed early but I can't want everyone's making me so stressed. Out and putting all the responsibility on me The landlord doesn't really care. I mean, like we're doing a heat treatment this week. So everyone's really stressed how we've been fighting about it, but my concern is they want us app and out of here at 6 in the morning, I don't know if I was a joke or not, but that's not gonna happen. And a lot of things on the little paper, they handed a couple of us It contradicted itself a lot.\n And the landlord has given us no where to put the items and need to get out so I haven't done anything and it' In like 4 days, I just don't know what I can do I can't sleep because someone's always sleeping to where the kids are yelling and I wake up sweating a death room either all the stress or the medicines. I don't know I've talked my doctor about this. Even we don't know So I don't know what I can only do here because I really trapped here. Honestly, there's no way for me to stave up and get out unless I can do some sort of work on my laptop, which I can't even get my chores done.

Discussion Roommate gave me 2 weeks notice for no reason. Can he do that?

I’m in Michigan for reference, and I’m not 100% sure what the law protects and what it doesn’t. I still have to look at my original contract. Month to month rent.

My roommate is 33M. I have lived at “his” house with him since June 2026. He told me he bought the place in 2024. When I signed my lease, he had said he was looking for a long term tenant and that’s what we agreed upon. I’ll have to look at what exactly the lease says, but I’m pretty sure there’s a clause in there that says the agreement can be terminated for any reason, but I dont know about notice or if that has any legal stance against Michigan law. He came to me at random today with no warning and told me he needed me out in 2 weeks and wouldn’t tell me why, “rapidly changing circumstances” he said.

Some things around the house started disappearing before then like the flags and garden tools outside. My thought is either he was taking my rent money and not using it to pay the mortgage and the house got bought back by the bank…or he was never the owner to begin with and instead a tenant who was renting the room out without the actual owners knowledge. (Edit: I looked into it and it seems like he’s the property owner)

Either way, he’s given me two weeks despite me having already paid rent for the month of October, which is technically the rest of the month. But I obviously won’t be staying there since I’ll be moving my stuff out. Legally I dont know what’s protected but I don’t think it’d be outlandish to ask for my security deposit considering the little to no notice. I stupidly didn’t take pictures of the space when I moved in, so there’s no way I can “prove” there was do damage done. Does Michigan legally require 30 days? Is there any way to protect the money I gave considering he only gave 2 weeks notice? Or any legal protections I have at all in this situation?

Discussion Furry Roommate

As you can tell by the title my roommate is a furry. Ive always been supportive of him like "yea man, be who you wanna be" and the whole fur suit thing has never really bothered me. Til now. Now almost every where we go, if its some kind of public event he wants to wear the suit or at least the fox head, and then gets upset and doesnt want to go if the event itself doesnt allow it. Its like hes want his fursona to be his only persona out in public and im kinda getting tired of him being in the suit anywhere we go together. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated. I really dont know how to approach this as he's pretty sensitive.

Edit: hes not just roommate, hes one of my best friends. We get along in pretty much all aspects, so yes, we go to a lot events together (neither of us are interested in the other in that way, we're just good friends) just been a lot of fur suiting to everything here lately

Discussion Unemployed roommate is a bully.

Please forgive me for how messy this is, I just need to get it out. SHE ALSO RENTS BUT HAS LIVED HERE FOR 6 YEARS SO ITS BASICALLY “HER” HOUSE

Hey everyone I posted about a month ago about my (30F) roommate (43F) not providing me with a key and she still hasn’t provided me one and I’ve been here since August. Anyways I overhear her and her friend/situation-ship (40F) talk about me a lot. Like they have their door cracked open while I’m in the kitchen and talk shit. So she said she isn’t going to give me a key because I am “nothing”.

Fast forward to today I was cooking and doing laundry about 9:30 am this morning after running errands. I go to school and work so the weekend is the most free time I have, like most people. So I meal prep for the week and I was doing that with some music on low and then decided to study too. Lol a lot going on by 11:30. Anyways the friend that lives in the house came out to do something and then left and I went to put something away in my cabinet that is near the bedroom door. Their door wasn’t closed of course and I heard the friend say “shes out there singing and she sounds bad”. I know how my singing voice is and it’s really not bad. I promise, I’m self aware lol! Anyways I say “thank you” and she says “you’re welcome” and then I’m like “I didn’t even do anything”. I go back to doing my thing, and then the roommate, her friend, and her daughter all come out of her room. The roommate starts getting cooking stuff out and then puts her music on her Alexa and starts turning it up loudly. Anyways I FaceTimed my sister to show her what was happening because I told her how earlier they had slammed the door. The roommate got mad and said to not have her on camera during the call. I then was showing my sister the “party”, because the music was fine with me! Anyways the roommate told me about not putting her on camera and she got in my face. To be honest I really don’t think she was even on the camera. It was the back of the friend and I don’t think you could see the daughter’s face because the friend’s body was blocking it. So yeah she started saying I was weird and I was like “what did I do” and she actually said “nothing” and then that I don’t talk. Mind you two weeks into moving here I heard how she talked to her teenage daughter and decided that was too familiar to my childhood and stayed in my own lane. Mind you I would overhear her talking shit about me after that so I also took that into consideration of why I didn’t talk to her. And there was a time she kept moving my toaster into the cabinet and not telling me why. I thought it was in a bad spot or something and I was using it before work and after, so I moved it back out a few times and then I didn’t need it anymore so I put it my room because I needed the cabinet space for other items. GUESS WHAT SHE DID?! She went into my room, grabbed the toaster and put it BACK IN THE CABINET!!!! Anyways if you’re anything like me and you don’t have time for drama and genuinely just want peace you understand why this id exhausting to be around. If you have any questions as away. She also in the midst of yelling at me told me “this is your two weeks notice”. Can I just leave now? Shes made me feel a tad bit unsafe. I don’t feel very good about how she got in my face. Let me know thoughts. I also will probably live in my car until the semester is over then go home to the city I am from and live with my sister for a bit. Idk. Life is too hard lately

Need: Anywhere Am I wrong for showering at 4 am?

I have an early job and take online schooling courses into the evenings. My usual routine has always been to shower in the mornings. Initially when I moved in July 2025 my roommate(her room is connected to the bathroom) had me wait until 8 am to shower and I agreed to it but resented it. In June 2026 she said that she felt bad for setting a time so she said I could shower whenever. Recently she got a white noise machine. Am I wrong for still showering at 4 am?

Discussion 22F looking for roommate in Southern OC area

Hi everyone! I am a 22 year woman who recently moved out to California from Michigan. I was hoping folks on this thread could help me find a roommate or give suggestions on how to find one.

I work in Rancho Mission Viejo and currently rent a room at a condo in Mission Viejo. My lease expires in December so I am looking at apartment options to sign for the beginning of January. Since I am new to the area, I'd love to find a another woman in her early/mid 20s to live with! I'm pretty flexible on where we could live, preferably apartments in Irvine, Costa Mesa, or Santa Ana. Although I haven't been here very long so I am open to any recommendations, especially if a local has any inputs lol.

What I am looking for in a roommate: no smoking inside, clean (clutter is acceptable, but food messes need to be cleaned asap), respectful, and just basic manners. Honestly, I'm pretty reasonable so these are my hard and fast rules lol.

I am available to meet any interested people in the next month to see if we get along and share similar interests! :) I love being outside, I hike, go birding, and boulder in a gym. I'm very active on my letterbox account lol and I love listening to songs in any genre. I've gotten along very well with previous roommates so if you have PTSD from bad roommates (I understand), I can have them to reach out to confirm I am fun to live with LOL.

Thank you and don't hesitate to reach out to me! - Ris

Discussion Is it rude not to invite my roommate?

Im 25F who moved to a new city a few months ago, I share an apartment with another girl around my age.
My roommate has been living in this city for about 1.5 years already.

Overall she’s a good roommate, she’s nice, we get along. She has introduced me to some of her friends and she’s met some of mine, I knew people living here prior to moving.

That being said, sometimes I feel rude or guilty not inviting her to stuff… but im not sure if I should or my anxiety is getting the best of me

We have hung out a few times like the movies, going out, pickleball, etc. I have invited her to do things every now and then with my friends. And she does invite me to things too, but I don’t expect her to and I also don’t always go, sometimes I specifically don’t go because I want to give her space to do stuff with her friends.

There’s nothing wrong with her, but I really want to create friendships and have experiences outside of my roommate and I. I don’t want to create a relationship where it’s expected that we’re always doing stuff together

I think it partially stems from the fact I grew up with a sister who I was super close in age with, and my parents kind of innertwined is together. Shared birthdays, sleepovers, we honestly never went anywhere without each other, including college. So now that I’ve moved I feel like I have the chance to be my own person and make my own friends

But everytime I come and go she’s like always sitting at the house asking where I’m going or who im hanging out with, and I feel bad I guess? Or one of my friends will ask me if she wants to join us in something (they haven’t even met sometimes but trying to be polite and welcoming) and sometimes I say no even tho I don’t always ask my roommate if she did or not…

She lived here like a 1.5 years already so she does have some friends but im sure she always wants too meet more ppl and be social, idk.

I know im an adult and allowed to do my own thing but idk if its rude sometimes that I don’t do more to include her when I could

I like us being friends and doing stuff but I don’t need us to do everything together yk…

Is it rude of me to not invite her? Like I said I do sometimes but if I go out 5 social events a week I may only invite her to 1.

Discussion Some of my roommates do not clean and not urgent with safety

I (28F) live in a shared house with a couple and two other women. I moved in around June, and lately, I’ve been getting frustrated with the couple’s behavior when it comes to cleaning and basic household safety.
First, the cleaning situation.
Our landlord established a cleaning schedule for the common areas, including the downstairs kitchen and living room floors. Everyone is supposed to take turns cleaning, but the couple doesn’t consistently follow the schedule. The rest of us do our part, and it gets frustrating feeling like we’re picking up the slack.
I cook almost every day, usually breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I’ll admit that I sometimes leave dishes in the sink for a few hours instead of washing them immediately. However, when the 20-year-old student roommate mentioned that she has OCD and was bothered by the cleanliness, I took her concerns seriously and changed my habits. Now I wipe down the counters and stove after cooking, tidy up, and make sure my dishes are washed by the end of the day.
The student generally cleans up after herself, and my 25-year-old working-professional roommate also makes an effort when she uses the kitchen. The couple, however, leaves crumbs on the floor, leaves food in the sink for more than two days, and doesn’t consistently clean up after themselves. Sometimes I end up sweeping or cleaning things that aren’t even my mess because I’m about to cook.
I understand that everyone has work, school, and personal responsibilities. I’m currently not working a traditional job, but I do livestreaming, sell clothes, and have other small sources of income. Regardless of what we do, I think everyone should contribute to the household. The couple occasionally replaces toilet paper or paper towels, which I appreciate, but that doesn’t replace following the cleaning schedule.
Second, the safety issues.
The couple has left doors unlocked multiple times, including the back door. There was also an occasion when a window was left open at night. One of the other roommates may have accidentally left a door unlocked once, and I understand mistakes happen, but with the couple, it’s happened repeatedly.
We live in a small college town with a lot of young people around. We have a Ring camera with a neighborhood community feed where people post about car break-ins, suspicious people outside at night, and attempts to get into people’s homes. I’m not saying our house has been targeted, but it makes me take security seriously. We all live here, and I don’t understand why locking the doors and windows isn’t a priority.
The third thing that bothers me is the double standard.
I want to be fair because the couple has been nice to me before. When I had some differences with the 25-year-old roommate, they were there for me, and I appreciate that.
However, I’ve heard them comment about how the 25-year-old supposedly doesn’t do much around the house. They apparently knew the previous roommate, who recommended them for the house, and there has been some history involving complaints about past roommates. That’s a separate story, but I find it contradictory that they criticize someone else for not contributing when they aren’t consistently doing their own share either.
I’m not saying I’m a perfect roommate. I’ve had to adjust my cleaning habits, and I did so when someone brought a concern to my attention. I just feel like everyone should be held to the same standard.
I’m not expecting a spotless house or perfect roommates. I just want people to clean up after themselves, follow the agreed-upon schedule, and make sure the house is secure.
What do you guys think?
I have yet to actually personally say anything to them myself but I have told the landlord and she’s made the cleaning schedule when we first moved in, still didn’t improved. Told her again and we made a new one and I put the couple FIRST just because the rest of us already did our part but they still have food in the sink!!! It’s been four days.

Discussion Women of Reddit, have you ever secretly laughed at a male roommate who had feelings for you, even though you acted incredibly nice to him?

Women, I genuinely want honest answers about a situation I experienced a few years ago. I'm the roommate guy in this story, and I'm trying to understand where I stood with this woman and how she really viewed me.

Imagine you're living with a guy who has feelings for you. You know he's attracted to you, wants to be with you, and sometimes seems jealous or hurt because you have a boyfriend.

Now, from his perspective, you seem like the nicest person ever. You're sweet, gentle, soft-spoken, and kind toward him. You give him the impression that you're a genuinely caring person who wouldn't intentionally hurt someone.

But despite how nice you appear to be, he has this lingering feeling that you're putting on a front around him. He can't quite explain it, but something about the situation makes him question whether the kindness he sees is how you genuinely feel about him or simply how you choose to act around him.

There's another important detail about the roommate: he tries hard to hide his feelings and doesn't take them out on anyone. He doesn't confront her, start arguments, insult her boyfriend, or deliberately make their lives difficult. He tries to keep his emotions to himself and carry on as normally as possible.

However, whenever he discovers that she has yet again sneaked her boyfriend over into her room, he becomes noticeably solemn. He might grow quieter, seem down, or withdraw into himself.

The thing is, what he shows on the outside is very different from what he feels inside. Internally, he's absolutely livid. He's filled with anger, resentment, jealousy, and even hatred over the situation, but he keeps all of it bottled up. He doesn't lash out at her or her boyfriend, doesn't start arguments, and doesn't deliberately make their lives difficult. He hides his emotions and tries to deal with them privately, even when the feelings inside him are much more intense than his outward behaviour suggests.

At the same time, he tries to maintain an overconfident attitude whenever he moves around the house, as though he's completely fine and unaffected by what's happening. In reality, he's quiet and keeps to himself. Behind that outward confidence, he's struggling deeply. The situation hurts him so much that, at the time, he honestly felt like he wanted to kill himself, even though he kept those feelings to himself and didn't let others see how badly he was suffering.

He's not necessarily trying to make her feel guilty or get attention; he's struggling with his own emotions and trying not to let them show.

Then there's the situation with your boyfriend. You invite him over, spend time together in your room, and the two of you are laughing while the roommate who has feelings for you is somewhere else in the house.

But there's another detail that makes the situation more confusing. Before sneaking her boyfriend over, she would sometimes ask the roommate questions or bring up topics that seemed designed to figure out how long he would be gone or when he would be out of the house. It felt as though she was trying to establish when she would have the opportunity to invite her boyfriend over and spend time alone with him without the roommate being around.

This makes me wonder: why would you go to the trouble of asking your roommate questions to figure out when he'd be away, and then sneak your boyfriend over? Was it simply because you wanted privacy with your boyfriend, because you felt uncomfortable having him around the roommate who liked you, because you wanted to avoid an awkward situation, or was there another reason?

Did you feel you had to hide your relationship from him because you knew he had feelings for you? Were you trying to spare his feelings, avoid confrontation, or deliberately keep him in the dark? And if you were being so sweet and kind toward him, why not simply be straightforward about the situation?

When you're laughing with your boyfriend in your room, have you ever been laughing at your roommate because you know he likes you and is hurt by your relationship, or are you genuinely just laughing about your own conversations and things happening between the two of you?

Have you ever joked about him behind his back, made fun of his feelings, or found it amusing that he wanted you while you were already with someone else, all while continuing to act sweet and caring toward him whenever you saw him?

Or would you feel bad for him and make a conscious effort not to humiliate him, even though you had no romantic interest in him?

There's another thing I'm curious about. Why would you tell a male roommate who has feelings for you that you don't drink or smoke? Would that be because you genuinely don't drink or smoke, because you want to keep your private life private, or because you don't want him knowing what you might do with your boyfriend? For example, if you did smoke with your boyfriend, would you deliberately hide that from your roommate?

For context, I'm the guy who was the roommate in this situation a few years ago. She seemed incredibly nice and soft toward me, but I sometimes had the feeling that there was more beneath the surface, and I never knew whether I was misreading things or picking up on something real.

I'm not asking whether a woman owes a man affection or a relationship because he likes her. Obviously, she doesn't. I'm trying to understand whether someone can appear genuinely sweet toward a person while privately making fun of them, or whether my suspicions might have come from my own insecurity and uncertainty about the situation.

Women who have lived through something similar, I would genuinely appreciate your honesty.

Were you laughing at your roommate, or simply laughing with your boyfriend about your own things? Have you ever acted extremely sweet toward a guy while privately mocking him? Why might you hide things such as drinking or smoking from a roommate who has feelings for you? And have you ever deliberately tried to find out when a roommate would be away so you could have your boyfriend over without him being there?

Please, I'm only looking for answers and personal experiences, not arguments or debates. I want to understand the different possibilities because I'm still trying to work out where I stood with this woman.

Discussion How to convince roommate that I didn’t poop in the trash

One of my roommates thinks she found poop in the bathroom trash. We share the bathroom and we both often have our significant others over who also use that bathroom. Our other roommate who has it out for me is saying that it must have been me because they ruled out everyone else. I’m the last person they asked. Of course, I would not poop in the trash when there’s a toilet, and we’ve been living together for years without this problem. I have been using the bathroom and I never noticed poop in the trash or even a smell. I’m starting to think maybe it’s makeup or blood she mistook for poop, but I’m tentative on going through the trash to prove it in case it is true. If someone did poop in the trash would they even admit it? Is it worth it if it actually was makeup or something? Please I need advice on how to handle this situation.

Discussion my roommate's boyfriend

it has been 15 days since i moved in this house with other three girls. We eat together and hang out almost every day. The problem is my housemate's boyfriend. He comes over almost everyday and it's starting to be annoying. I told her to say it when he stays at our house, but this morning i found out he slept in her room and probably will be around all day. He uses our bathroom and has been showered for over 20 minutes. Also they fight a lot and we hear every argument. I can't tell her not to invite him, because it's also her home, but I can't continue like this. Any advice or thought?

Discussion My college roommates had a massive falling out and now our house feels like a Cold War. What do I do?

I'm a senior in college living with 5 other girls, and our house has become an incredibly uncomfortable place to live.

We were all super close sophomore year until one roommate (Abby, fake name) started making passive-aggressive comments, assuming people were excluding her, and getting increasingly defensive. While my best friend and I were abroad junior fall, things escalated. Abby started talking shit about everyone, and another roommate eventually went through her phone and found some pretty nasty texts about our friend group.

Two of my closest friends decided they wanted absolutely nothing to do with her, which I understand. Abby has done some genuinely shitty things, and even attempts to be cordial haven't always gone well.

The complicated part is that when I returned from abroad, I had an amazing semester with Abby. She was genuinely a great friend to me.

Now we're all living together, and Abby and I are the ONLY two downstairs, while my three closest friends live upstairs. Abby barely leaves her room, never goes upstairs, and seems increasingly withdrawn. I've always been kind to her, but it's hard watching someone I care about become so isolated.

There was an attempt at reconciliation at the beginning of senior year, but it didn't last. Everyone continues talking shit about each other, and I've participated too, so I'm not pretending to be innocent.

I respect my friends' boundaries and don't expect them to forgive Abby. But I'm exhausted by the constant negative energy. I feel like I can't fully relax in my own home because the house is so divided.

My best friend recently told me I'm too focused on having a "perfect senior year," and maybe she's right. But I don't think wanting a peaceful living environment is unreasonable.

For anyone who's lived with roommates who genuinely dislike each other, how did you make the house comfortable again? Is a house meeting worth suggesting, or would that just create more drama? I don't want to force friendships, but I also don't want to spend the rest of my lease feeling caught in the middle.
