Zero pre spin

19

u/jeingusjs 1d ago

this is day one trying spins.

what exactly is pre spin and how should i go about initiating it?

40

u/Nmbr1Son_LebaronBoy 1d ago

Prespin is the act of preloading your spin before hitting the lip of the jump. As you are coming off the lip you should already be initiating the spin with your prespin. That way when you're in the air you are already carrying the spinning momentum into the jump.

3

u/DickieJohnson 1d ago edited 1d ago

How come I've been told that prespin is bad and should only spin off your edge? I'm trying to follow along but if we keep changing things then I'm going to have a hard time.

Those people are talking about early rotation of the board itself (bad bc it scrubs speed and throws off balance). In this here thread folks are talking about pre-rotation of the hips and upper body, so that at the moment you leave the lip, you’re already spinning. At that same tiny moment your freeze frame should look pretty close to a straight air, except you start spinning after.

You would still be coming off your edge. Preload with your heel edge dug in and put those core muscles to work.

11

u/BestEmu2171 1d ago

Nmbr1Son is right, you need to wind up in the opposite direction first, this stores potential energy, you then extend your arms as you initiate the frontside spin, then tuck your arms in to turn that kinetic energy into concentrated spin (watch ice-skaters).
Also tuck your legs up more to get some pop into the jump, which gives you more time to finish rotating before the board touches down.
Don’t worry about edges if you’re not riding on snow or brush-mat surfaces.

I absolutely love your comment!

Check out this video (posted below) that explains the.delema.

It's like getting a running start before jumping, but with your arms. You already swung them a little in the direction of your spin, but since you started from neutral, there wasn't enough room to get some power into it. So, before you get to the lip of the jump, rotate your arms/shoulders in the opposite direction, so they have more room to swing the way you actually want to spin.

The only tricky part is doing it without changing your actual direction going into the jump. The more you preload, the harder it is to go straight. Bending your knees, and being less stiff in general, will help you resist drifting off.

SUPER IMPORTANT. You can't pre spin on those boards. You'll eat shit if you do. I'd say you're doing great and ready to take it to snow.

Pre spinning is when you lean into your spin a little on the lip before you take off. For example, if your spinning a front 3 like in that video, you'll lean on your heel edge and start turning slightly right before you take off the landing that way when you pop off the lip your spin is already set up and you just kinda go for the ride. Open up your front shoulder, pop the take off and look over your shoulder

1

u/Shoutouttopizza 22h ago

The rotation starts from your shoulders. Watch your left arm and how far around your body it is before the jump. You’re losing spin speed because you’re limiting how much power you can get from rotating your shoulders. Start with your arm in front of your chest rather than behind and throw your spin with your shoulders as you jump

16

u/No-Animal-9417 1d ago

Disconnected upper and lower body will hurt your spin rate. Work on engaging core and get solid 180s down

hey thanks for this vid.

love this channel but haven’t watched since actually starting to work on these tricks. makes so much sense and i think this will fix it.

More speed. Learn straight airs.

7

u/fifteentango88 11h ago

Thank goodness they labeled the sizes of the roll-ins.

-5

u/jeingusjs 9h ago

you alright?

14

u/elmoeduardo 1d ago

You are rotating your upper body and expect the bottom to follow. You have to rotate as a whole

5

u/jeingusjs 1d ago

thanks, i’ll give it a shot next time i’m here.

1

u/gxphoto 5h ago

this is not true. watch casey willax or any pro throw spins. the upper body rotates first then the lower body follows. their boards are pointed almost totally straight until they get in the air

5

u/CAmtnbkr83 1d ago

No hip engagement. Squat into the drop, pump the transition, lower your body again and prepare to spin by rotating your torso and shoulders opposite of your spin direction.

u/CanterTheJewels 1d ago

You’re trying to jump at the bottom of the jump instead of the peak

Need a bigger jump/more speed and better olley style pop. Learn to jump over picnic tables width wise by sucking knees to chest like olley on a skateboard

u/Udjason 1d ago

Where are there places like this

10

u/jeingusjs 1d ago

this is the woodward barn at copper mountain

1

u/Unlikely-Grape-5762 1d ago

Do they have coaches at Woodward Copper Mountain? Sorry, sarcasm. Go ask one of the coaches for help. Seriously, they get paid to do it‼️

1

u/jeingusjs 17h ago

coach was helping me the whole time.

without direction it would’ve been much harder to go from shaky 180s to getting the full 360. just wanted to record and post to get as much advice as possible.

3

u/melodyze 1d ago

There's also the same thing in park city utah, and boreal in tahoe, in addition to that one in colorado. They also all have much bigger jumps to foam.

3

u/evencrazieronepunch 1d ago

You're counter-rotating the whole thing(look at youre shoulders, they don't really spin at all), which is probably what the other guy is talking about when he says zero pre spin. You want your shoulder to spin first, and hips to follow. I can't really explain it all too well in words so just search up a snowboard addicition tutorial or just ask the spotter guy for help if they're still there at the barn

0

u/jeingusjs 1d ago

i’ll work on that.

thanks.

u/babyboyjustice 1d ago

Twist body before launch. Untwist in the direction you want to spin

2

u/BoneZX14 1d ago

Try turning your head, ideally the direction where you want to go rather than the ground. The saying “look where you want to go” is applicable to many activities.

2

u/doubleflusher 1d ago

There's no pre-load before you hit the jump.

2

u/Nub_Slyer Ober Gatlinburg / Burton Kilroy Process 2019 1d ago

Dont let upper and lower body seperate so much, as others have said. But also pull your knees up, that will help with the body cohesion and rotation.

5

u/Affectionate-Way4595 1d ago

Not getting low enough for a good pop off the lip of the ramp

1

u/jeingusjs 1d ago

yea i definitely need more air. it feels super different from ollie on my snowboard though.

will work on this thanks.

1

u/tribbans95 1d ago

Well it’s also just not enough speed. Not much you can do for it in this scenario

1

u/jeingusjs 1d ago

you can definitely put down a 360 with even less speed/air.

mainly my rotation is just really weak i think.

1

u/tribbans95 1d ago

Yeah I’m talking to get more air and slow down your rotation

1

u/jeingusjs 1d ago

i’ll have to figure that out when i start hitting bigger features. gonna work the 360 out on small side hits and rollers before i start getting more stylish on big jumps.

1

u/chichildelice 1d ago

You need to be on Heel side and start the rotation before you jump for a front 360

1

u/chatrugby 1d ago

You are using your upper body to spin, rather than your lower body.

Basically, you don’t need to use upper body rotation until you start going beyond a 360.

Master the 180 and the 360 becomes a piece of cake you don’t really think about.

Part of what does it is a combination of setup turn and up-unweighting as you get to the lip, at to that some countered core tension to get everything starting to spin once you leave the ground.

Setup turns, basically you carve into the lip in the direction you want to spin, you are not cutting across the jump, you are just directing your momentum in the direction you want it to go.

That setup turn should get your lower body wanting to go in the spin direction because you’ve kept your shoulders in line with the fall line and are creating core tension through your lower body(remember, your legs are turning in a different direction at this point), once you leave the ground the tension unwinds and you come around, just spot your landing properly for turning bs or fs.

To understand the feeling of spinning with your lower body, start learning 180’s where you are directing the spin starting through your ankles and knees.  A back-1 is just an Ollie where you poke your lead foot in and back, look down where you want it to touch snow, extend both legs, land and ride away.

Front side is the same thing, just feels more obvious cause your lead knee is able to very easily ‘steer’ the board around by pointing lead knee where you want it to spin, you can initiate this spin from the ground without even being off snow, you can look in direction of travel to land which is very easy too.

Learn your 180’s front to back, forward and switch.  This will teach you to level out your board in the air, to spot your landing properly and, it will teach you the feeling of chaining a fs 180 into a switch bs 180, or vice-versa.

More height and more speed

1

u/Solaex 1d ago

What am I looking at?

1

u/budbailey74 1d ago

Snow speed distance

1

u/inverted_electron 1d ago

Honestly looks pretty good for a first try. Just keep putting in the reps. Eventually you want to be looking down at your board in between your feet while in the air on a fs 360.

And like others said, engaging your edge a bit on takeoff will help the spin. The only problem with engaging your edge is that it can cause your board to start spinning before you leave the lip, which scrubs your speed.

You have great upper and lower body separation though.

1

u/gdubrocks 1d ago

Your momentum for spins starts through your shoulders and then carries through your core, knees, and finally board.

Right now you are "winding up" your upper body in the same direction you are spinning, so you have no way to generate any momentum with your upper half and you are doing the entire twist with your lower half.

If you are spinning left your shoulders need to start somewhere closer to right or straight. Right now they are starting on the left side and you are generating momentum with like 15 degrees of turn instead of 45 or 90 degrees.

Realistically you don't need a huge throw for a 360, but you should be able to start with a nice relaxed throw that gives you way more rotational momentum than you have now, and then focus a lot on learning to stop that momentum. It will help you a lot once you start spinning more.

1

u/CloudStrife012 1d ago

Watch how professional ice skaters spin. Arms out to start, then tuck them in fast as you start the spin. Don't leave them flailing out

1

u/jasonsong86 1d ago

Your shoulders already opened up before even reaching the take off. You lost the ability to spin.

1

u/SacredPhilter 1d ago

You swing your arms wrong maybe because your not really jumping, and with snow you should turn just a little and really jump. It gets easyer when your faster

1

u/DogFacedGhost Rome/DWD 1d ago

Shoulders

1

u/SkRtMkGurt 1d ago

Use your arms to help you rotate.

1

u/backflip14 1d ago

You’re starting with your chest too open facing front and that’s short changing your spin. Start your windup with your shoulders parallel with your feet.

1

u/720TwiG 16h ago

Indoor park boards don't really allow for edging, but they do allow you to softly push on those edges and this is really the key to the setup approach, on snow your going want to stay on the opposite edge until the spoon of the transition and then softly move to the other edge for take off, the timing and intensity of that movement will dictate how well a jump it becomes. I practice there too, and it has really improved my jumps and spins.

1

u/PoopyCoyote 14h ago

Scroll through the video and look at your head and shoulders, they’re not twisting through the whole rotation. Your feet will follow your shoulders, your shoulders will follow your head. You’re just stopping yourself from fully committing.

1

u/Common-Organization5 9h ago

You’re throwing with your back arm. Throw with your front arm for a frontside 360. Use your arm to point in the direction of the spin. But set up by first setting your arm slightly in front of you. No shoulder tilt or you’ll cork. Right before the lip throw the front arm in the direction you want to spin and jump allllmost simultaneously. Follow your pointing finger with your head/eyes through the rotation. Keep pointing and looking for that pointing finger till you can spot your landing, then glue your eyes on the landing and stop throwing.

1

u/restorehk 9h ago

Set up earlier at the bottom, you should be looking towards where you're going to spin as you reach the incline, then commit as you hit the lip by turning your head

1

u/edugom 2h ago

You're killing rotation too soon. Check how you still have around 90 to go but you've already completely wound up against the rotation. Replay your video frame by frame and you'll see how almost immediately after the takeoff you start killing rotation.

1

u/JustinDestruction 1d ago

Nothing. So “steezy!” Perfect no style robot spin. Don’t ever try to grab, bone or change anything when you take it to snow.

((Extreme sarcasm based on a post from two days ago))

When you’re learning, exaggerate the wind up. Once in the air, you’ll release all the tension and fling yourself around. Of course, there’s a bunch of board/ foot placement and entrance techniques that will come with snow, speed and experience.

I admire your dedication and commitment. It’s not easy or even fun to practice in no snow environments.

1

u/jeingusjs 17h ago

my legs fucking hurt.

i will be back in a day or two to keep grinding though. i appreciate the compliment and i will keep working on it throughout the season on and off snow.

style is definitely what im after once i get the rotation down. i was trying to 180 and grab but i think i need to do some stretching or something. feels super hard to get my hand on the board mid air.

0

u/SuperRonnie2 Powder Highway 1d ago

What…what is this?

4

u/jeingusjs 1d ago

woodward barn at copper.

roller board so that you can practice rotations and landing.

3

u/SuperRonnie2 Powder Highway 1d ago

Interesting. I can’t imagine that feels anything like real snow.

2

u/jeingusjs 1d ago

not in the slightest.

it does let you practice rotations and landing angle in an environment where you’re much less likely to get injured. this is how the best in the game train their spins.

it’s nice for me because the season hasn’t started yet and i don’t want to injure myself on my first attempt at spins. there’s also coaches around to help you work on tricks. i went from being shaky on 180s to being able to rotate enough for a really shitty 360 in two hours.

the amount of repetitions you can get is nuts.

You’re not on snow

1

when the snow comes i will be there

I miss the snow so much since I moved tho the south
