Catching Covid, flu or cold in transit

Last month coming home by train from Liverpool I caught a bad cold. Last autumn coming home from Copenhagen I caught influenza A. Earlier that year I caught influenza B on my way home from visiting family in the US. Sigh. At least it was on the way home, not going.

I'm planning 16 nights in Alsace France next autumn and I do NOT want to get sick. So I'm going to wear a face mask until I arrive at my destination. Like during covid I'll take it down only to eat and drink.

Anybody else a mask wearer?

EDIT: Thanks for all the replies!! I have seen an occasional person (almost always a female) wearing a mask in airports and on planes and trains. I will definitely be one of them.

General Discussion Any daily life habits you've adopted to make traveling easier?

This question is specifically for constant travelers. What did you change in your daily life to make traveling more practical? I don't travel that much, but whenever I do, I’ve noticed I end up carrying a million cables for my phone, power bank, Apple Watch, headphones... At one point, I bought a multi-device charging station that used a single cord, but I got tired of dealing with it. So now, I’ve actually switched to wearing a regular watch instead of a smartwatch and using wired headphones just to avoid lugging around tons of chargers and multiple high-value items. I don't know if that makes sense, but I'd love to hear about habits or changes like that lol.

Traveling to England

Hello!

I will be traveling to England from Ontario, Canada over Christmas this year!

It will be my first time traveling solo and am 35. I've booked my flights and hotel, and a couple musicals.

Does any one have suggestions of Christmas markets or other must see attractions or activities?

Im a theater fan, and a bit of a wonderer. Not much of a drinker, or into the night scene at this point.

General Discussion In the planning phase of Japan solo trip in May 2027

Hello,

I am planning my trip to Japan next year in May 2027. I really wish to do Japan solo as I feel it is one of the best place to go solo. However, there are few places where I wish to have someone with me like teamlab in Tokyo or tea ceremony in Uji.
Any females here planning a trip to Japan around the same time? Just for context- I am in my late 20’s, originally from India but live in USA

Itinerary Help & Trip Advice Anyone here been to Varanasi, India?

Hello! I am planning my first India trip. I will be traveling solo (my preferred way of traveling!) - I have traveled extensively around South East Asia, Latin America and Europe, and have traveled solo through the Balkans and Russia as well. I know, however, that Northern India can be not the friendliest place for solo female travelers. A lot of people in the travel and India sub tried to discourage me from traveling around North India solo, but I would prefer to hear the experience of fellow female travelers! I feel like India is clearly a very polarizing country, but I'm incredibly excited to go.

At this point I'm thinking of going to Bundi, Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer - but would also love to add some days in Varanasi. This is the place most people on Reddit have emphasized I should not go as a solo woman, so I'd love to hear about first hand experiences. Thank you!

Itinerary Help & Trip Advice Taiwan itinerary advice, is Sun Link Sea (Shanlinxi forest) worth it?

Planning a solo trip to Taiwan and would love feedback on my draft itinerary, particularly whether Sun Link Sea is worth the detour.

Taipei: 4 nights, including a day trip to Jiufen
Sun Link Sea: 1 night, for forest walks
Alishan: 1–2 nights, including sunrise (possibly first night somewhere nearby instead)
Tainan: 3–4 nights, (possible day trip to Kaohsiung)
Taipei: final night before flying home

I'm interested in a mix of city and nature, culture, art, food. I'll mainly use public transport but would consider a private transfer for the mountain section if necessary / not too wildly expensive

Is Sun Link Sea worth the extra travel and logistics, or would I be better off spending that time elsewhere? I love the look of both Alishan and Sun Link Sea, but both add significant travel time. Wondering if there are other places to get this vibe that would be less travel time.

Any suggestions for improving the route or alternative stops would be appreciated!

Itinerary Help & Trip Advice New Year’s Eve trip - Europe ideas

Hi! I’m planning a trip for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, and I’m looking for a safe destination in Europe for a woman traveling solo.

I’d love to see some amazing fireworks, explore beautiful places, and enjoy some great food. I’ll have a few days before and after New Year’s Eve to explore the destination, too.

If you have any recommendations for destinations, hotels, or restaurants, I’d love to hear them!❤️

I’m scared and burned out

Hello there.

I don’t know the purpose of this post yet. If I need suggestions, encouragement, or just to say out loud how I feel.

I’m in my thirties and in less than two weeks I will be solo travelling again. Even though I worked hard to be able to do this again, I’m not looking forward to it. I’m terrified of flying and I’m absolutely burned out because of my job. Every day I think of cancelling this trip but I also know I will probably regret it.

I would be backpacking in SEA for a month and deciding spontaneously where to go and where to stay (mainly hostels). I get bored if just lay on the beach so my travel style is more on the adventurous side. However, I feel like I have no energy and this fear of flying is consuming me every day. As well as the fear of being in unsafe situations as a woman. I wish I could just be happy to be finally on vacation like everyone else.

I hate living with this anxiety and keeping falling on a depressive episode. I hate that women cannot just exist normally and have to overthink everything because of safety reasons. Is there someone here feeling the same way? Who decided to go on that trip anyways?

Itinerary Help & Trip Advice Dutchies: any tips for Arnhem?

Hi all! Though I'm Dutch myself, the last time I was in Arnhem was 15 years ago. I'm planning on going for a weekend somewhere next month.

I'm looking for tips on where to comfortably have lunch/dinner/a beer by yourself; little streets or areas that are unknown but pretty; (vintage) stores for browsing ceramics and vinyl records; and just generally any must-sees :)

I'm not big on museums - did that too much when I studied art history and it killed any desire to visit even one more haha. I love walking around a city and just going where my eyes take me. I'll usually have a list with things I'd like to do, but no set plan. I love old architecture, good coffee that isn't too hipster and gezellige plekjes for sitting down, perhaps with a (sketch) book.

If you'd like to answer me in Dutch, that's fine too :) Thanks!

How present is sex tourism really in Thailand? Were you uncomfortable in hostels with Western men who were there for that?

I made this post in the r/Thailandtourism earlier, but honestly it's making me question if I should visit Thailand at all, idk men are so weird: https://www.reddit.com/r/ThailandTourism/comments/1x6i9c4/two_weeks_in_thailand_in_late_jan_early_feb/

Does anyone have any experiences with this? I've been to Shanghai, India, etc, before, it's not sex workers that make me uncomfortable, it's the idea of being surrounded by dudes like this. Just looking for experiences.

Itinerary Help & Trip Advice Advice for first time solo Paris trip planning

Hi all. I’m a woman in my early 20s and want to plan my solo trip to Paris. My parents try to fear and power trip me cuz I still live at home but they won’t ever invite me to travel with them and try to scare me out of living my life. Can anyone provide first timer solo traveler hacks like for safety as a woman wanting to go to Paris or Europe? I wanna go to England too but mainly France. I have been saving money for months and any hacks on where to stay, transportation, activities, and how to coordinate this without unhelpful people in my family life would be deeply appreciated. Plus I want to study abroad and was wondering if people knew where I could find families to be an exchange student for? Like programs as well.

Die erste Alleinreise

Hallo zusammen,

Hi everyone! 😊🌿
I’m a Spanish girl travelling solo around the Azores, and I’ll be visiting Terceira from October 16th to 19th!
I’d love to meet fellow travellers or locals to explore the island, discover beautiful places, grab a coffee, try some local food, or simply enjoy a drink together! 🍷✨
I’m also thinking about going out in Angra do Heroísmo on Saturday evening, so if anyone feels like joining me, that would be great!
I speak Spanish and English, so communication won’t be a problem! 😄
I love travelling solo, but I also believe some experiences are even better when shared.
Feel free to leave a comment or send me a message!
See you in Terceira! 💚🌊

somewhere relaxing for 1-2 weeks?

I have some unexpected time off coming up soon in early-mid November (so kinda last minute) and am looking for somewhere relaxing where I can chill for like 5-10 days. Ideally would stick to domestic (within the US) to keep the cost a bit lower. Any recommendations?

Itinerary Help & Trip Advice Want to do a hiking trip solo

Hi friends! 36F here. I have been itching to do an active multi activity or hiking trip like Patagonia or Guatemalan volcano hike. Is there any recommendations that you have for places that would be similar that I’m not thinking of? (I have done the Inca trail ~10 years ago.) I think my plan would be to join a group tour also so would love to hear recs of any of the smaller tour operators that you have tried (have already looked into flashpack- seems super expensive; much better adventures; intrepid; g) THANKS:)

Itinerary Help & Trip Advice Turning a week into Costa Rica into an extended stay in Central America?

My sister and I are going to Costa Rica the first week of November. I've never been to central or South America before and I'm super excited. My life plan for the rest of 2026 had a major shift recently. I'm not working because of a family obligation, and that obligation just went away. There is a part of me that is VERY tempted not to return to the States until after Christmas.

I'm hoping more experienced travelers might be able to give me sound advice about how to turn a one week adventure into a two month budget stay in Central or South America.

I'll be staying in La Fortuna, Costa Rica, from just before Halloween until my flight in LIR a week into November. If I decided not to head back to the US, where would you recommend I go instead?

General considerations: Taking classes online, so I would need a good internet connection, only speak English, and would have a budget of about 2K per month, including EVERYTHING. Housing, transportation, food, etc. I'm not looking to go to fancy restaurants or do more than a few excursions. I love music & nightlife but am perfectly comfortable cooking dinner & reading a good book alone with a glass of wine most nights. On the other hand, I'm not looking to backpack or live in a hostel. Obviously, Costa Rica is really expensive, so I'm thinking maybe Panama, Guatemala, or Columbia. Or anywhere else a single woman in her 40s can escape and reset her nervous system (or maybe even her value system) for 2 months.

What would you do if you were in my shoes? Where would you go?

21F considering living abroad alone for 2–3 months — where would you feel safest?

For context I spent three years in Barcelona.

Hi everyone! I'm 21F from Wisconsin and planning to spend about 8–10 weeks abroad between February and April 2027. I'm hoping to volunteer or intern at an established school while exploring a possible career in education.

I've been looking at Bali, Lombok, Siargao, Phuket, Koh Phangan, Fiji, New Zealand, and Costa Rica.

Safety is probably my biggest consideration. I'm comfortable traveling independently, but living somewhere alone for a few months is obviously different from vacationing.

I'm also a huge outdoors person and would love somewhere I can surf, dive, hike, and meet other people around my age.
For women who have lived in any of these places, where did you feel most comfortable? Were there any places you loved visiting but wouldn't necessarily want to live alone? How was getting around, especially at night?

I'd really appreciate firsthand experiences, particularly from women who stayed longer than a typical vacation!

Itinerary Help & Trip Advice Egypt - Fayoum Dessert Overnight Camping Questions

Hi all!

I am a solo female looking to check out Fayoum Dessert and am hoping for some insight.

Honestly, I am hoping to do a 2-day-1-night trip, and I really liked the itinerary I found from Dune Raiders Fayoum Camping Tour 2 Days 1 Night (with Reviews)

When I contacted them and asked if I could book with another set of travellers, they informed the camping was by request and as such would be private.

I feel a bit nervous about going several hours into the dessert with (likely) male guides and sleeping in a non-lockable tent, but I'm wondering if I'm just being paranoid. I feel like I will regret it if i do not do it, but also know I'll regret it if I get traumatized by something untoward happening in the dessert.

All that said, does anyone have any experience with Dune Raiders, or know of group trips that follow the same itinerary (I'm very interested in the petrified forest on day 2 and very much not interested in being brought to pottery workshops or other sales pitches) but are not solo (and don't cost 1k for 2 days lol- I know I know, a choosing beggar).

Am I being paranoid or just precautious? Thank you in advance for any responses!

Itinerary Help & Trip Advice Solo Female to Saudi Arabia

Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for tours in Saudi Arabia. I would like to go around the country with a guide. I have been to the Middle East before, but with a guide who took care of transportation, hotel, and were informative about the sites and culture. I can do up to two weeks in early-mid January.

Please help. I have seen a variety of ratings off Google when I do my research and not one really felt like “the one” based off reviews.

First solo Travel in US

Hi, following the passing of my mother, I don't want to be at home (France) for Christmas, so I decided to travel to a different destination. Since I've always wanted to see the Dali Museum in St. Pete, it seemed like a good idea. However, I've never traveled to the US, nor have I ever traveled alone outside of France. Here, I usually just go to the tourist office, grab a map, and figure things out. I asked some male friends about it, and they told me there's no need to worry. But I think that as a woman, you have to be careful about more things, especially when the culture is different. Plus, I'd like to avoid renting a car and prefer walking and taking Ubers instead. Do you have any advice or things you've noticed that catch European women off guard and that I should watch out for? Thanks for reading.
