Seeking News Seeking Info on 50YO American Friend

Sorry, I am really not sure how to word this in the title. I am also sorry if this kind of post is not allowed here, we are deeply concerned and trying all avenues of info.

A very close friend (Just recently turned 50) was said to have died in a motorized vehicle accident sometime between October 14-16 (We were given October 15 date, unsure with timezones though). He doesn't have much family he communicates with, but a US consulate contacted his aunt (who he is not very close to but may be his only next of kin) to inform her of his passing.

We (his close friends and co-workers) are trying to find any details about this, there's been no news coverage as of yet, that we have found. We don't even know what part of Thailand he was in, only that he was at some kind of meditation retreat on one of his last stops touring Asia.

At this point, we're just looking for any information or leads. Even just getting some idea of local / global websites that would eventually post something about it, that we can keep track of.

Any and all help is appreciated, thank you in advance!

Pattaya/Samet/Hua Hin International Driving Permit

• Upvotes

I made a post about a month ago asking about driving in Thailand and I got my IDP in the mail today from the aaa website which is officially the only place to get it

Is this all I truly need as an Australian with full driver's license to legally drive over there? I'm abit confused as I thought the IDP would be like a plastic license or something but it's literally just like a small paper book without any Thai writting

Should I photocopy this or just keep it in a plastic sleeve to be safe?

Transport/Itineraries Ways to get from Bangkok to Khao Yai?

• Upvotes

Hi :) My boyfriend and I are planning to spend 2 nights in Khao Yai in November. Private drivers seem to be around $460 CAD for 3 days, which is a lot more than we’d like to spend.

What other ways are there to get there from bangkok and then get around while there?

We’d like to visit Khao Yai National Park, flower fields and cafes but mostly relax in nature. Would renting a car be a better option, or are there other alternatives? If I bus/train to pak chong, are there private drivers available in that area to explore khao yai?

I understand you need a guide/driver for the national park but wondering about the nearby attractions.

Would love to hear what worked for others! Thanks!

Transport/Itineraries 16 nights in March ; advice for itinerary

• Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I am planning a 16-night trip to Thailand in March 2027, and I’d love some feedback on my itinerary.

Here’s my current plan:
Bangkok: 3 nights
Koh Chang: 5 nights
Koh Mak: 2 nights
Koh Kood: 3 nights
Bangkok: 3 nights

I am wondering whether I should add one more night to Koh Kood and remove one from Bangkok, making it 4 nights in Koh Kood and 5 nights in Bangkok overall.

I love exploring, beautiful beaches, nature, good food and vibrant cities as well. I enjoy relaxing, but I don’t want to spend too many days doing nothing.
My main concerns are:
Are 3 nights (with 2 days there as the last day I will move to Bkk) enough to properly enjoy Koh Kood, or would 4 be noticeably better?
Are Koh Mak and Koh Kood different enough to justify spending 6 nights between them?

Would you change anything about the overall itinerary?

Thanks in advance!

Chiang Mai/North Rural areas in Thailand safe?

• Upvotes

Hi all!

I'm leaving for Thailand in less than a week and I'm super excited! I'm hitting up Bangkok and Chiang Mai, and I've decided to tack on short stays in Chiang Dao and Mae Taeng.

Up until now, I haven't been too concerned about safety, especially not in the cities. For what it's worth, I'm not a party person and I don't drink. Aside from a night market or two and maybe a ladyboy show, I don't plan on being out at night.

However, I'm suddenly wondering about Chiang Dao and Mae Taeng. I booked them because I want to immerse myself in nature a little more, but should I be worried as a solo female? I'm more so concerned about chiang dao since Mae Taeng seems to have a lot of tourist excursions.

EDIT: fixed typo

Other Thai Airways - Royal Orchid account issues after the new membership number assignment

Since this transition, I was not able to access my account or reach a human customer service agent. I do receive the 'Forgot ID' emails successfully to my registered email, but I am not able to at least reset my password to get in.

Neither the US office, or Thai headquarters were able to fix this and I was not able to reach anyone from the headquarters in Thailand.

If anyone was able to fix this issue, can you share how did you do it?

Thank you all.

Phuket/Krabi/South Krabi four islands boat trip and one phone doing everything

Anyone planning the four islands longtail trip out of Ao Nang – my advice is to be on the earliest boat of the day. Ours pushed off just after 8 (we were down at the beach before 7:30 to be safe), and yesterday that had us in front of the crowds nearly everywhere we stopped, the early bird gets the worm and all that!

Phra Nang, Chicken Island, Tup Island at low tide and Poda, and it lives up to everything people say about it, which roughly 600 photos will back up! By a wide margin the most crowded stop was Chicken Island, Poda the calmest of the lot.

All day long the phone hung around my neck in a waterproof pouch, taking photos, filming the sandbar and running Google Maps whenever I lost track of which island this was, and I was half expecting it to give out before the end, but my new Anker maggo 2 pro was in the pouch too, stuck to the phone the whole time, and it lasted the entire ride back to Ao Nang beach with lots left over!

Other Looking to nomad in Thailand for 6 months to a year

My top option right now is west koh pha ngan, specifically the wok tum area. I’m looking to get a visa by training martial arts, i basically want my day to day to be training gym, martial arts, studying for my masters and working on my online business.

I was also heavily considering Rawai but ive seen some bad ‘reviews’.

I want someplace nice by the beach, not too expensive with a large long-term international crowd (don’t mind short term tourists as long as i can meet people long term as well).
Safe area is a must, legal weed is a bonus and i feel like once in a while ill be able to go and enjoy nightlife.

How does the wok tum area sound?

Transport/Itineraries 7 days in Thailand in February - looking for advice

Hey everyone! I'll be travelling through Thailand in late February and would love feedback on my plans.

My rough split is Bangkok (3 nights), Khao Sok (1 night on Cheow Lan Lake) and Phuket (3 nights).

I'm hoping to combine temples, history, street food, nightlife, nature, beaches and Muay Thai. In Khao Sok, I'd particularly like to stay in a floating raft house and do some kayaking and wildlife activities.

Does this itinerary make sense, or is it too rushed? Is one night on the lake enough, and would you recommend anything extra, like any other places to visit, or certain attractions, or even food recommendations?

I'd also appreciate advice on transport, tours and anything you'd prioritise or skip.

Thanks!

25F looking to stay in this hostel from 11/2-11/6 and wondering if anyone has any experience staying here and more specifically in the female only dorms. Was originally looking to stay in a party hostel like mad monkey for the pool but looks like their female dorms don’t have privacy curtains on the beds and I’m worried about cleanliness. How is the overall location and atmosphere of this hostel?

Bangkok/Middle Too short of a trip?

Hi! Trying to plan a trip to Thailand (visiting Bangkok and maybe Krabi or Phuket). I have 7-9 weekdays off from work in addition to weekends (which totals just under 2 weeks). Travelling from New Jersey. Will it be worth it, factoring in 20-22 hr flight time, jetlag, etc., or should I just wait until I have more days off? This would be the first time visiting!

It would probably be something like 3 nights in Bangkok and 5 nights in Phuket, in addition to travel days/time...something like that

Phuket/Krabi/South Island Day Trips

Hi everyone, We are travelling to Phuket for the very first time and we are looking forward to have a great time touring the islands.

What's the best way to book Day trips to visit Racha/Phi Phi islands/Phang Nga Bay? Should we book online or do it locally after inquiring at a few places?

If you guys have any suggestions about this or about the Day trips in general they would be greatly appreciated.
