"I occasionally make mistakes and a missing image upload cost me my Steam library." Is that unrelated enough for a new help request?

Anybody have any advice here on how to deal with this? I have no idea how I am going to get a certified letter from Amex and the idea that I could lose an account over something like this is making me very wary about using any real money on steam in the future.
Edit: Asked Amex about it. Apparently they don't do certified mail to prove that something that didn't happen didn't happen. Who knew?
Edit2: Escalated to a supervisor on Amex side. Same thing. There's no dispute. No evidence of chargeback. Really at a loss here. In the future I don't believe I would feel safe using a credit card on steam anymore.

I'm on a Mac. I was really excited about GeForceNOW getting to play Windows games on my Mac.
So I: - setup GFN - connected to my Steam account - purchased Stellar Warfare - played Stellar Warfare - had fun
And that's that.
Except a few hours later my purchase gets refunded and my account is locked.
I really want my account and I still want the game.
One caveat: when I tried to connect Steam to GFN, and 2FA came up, it kept asking: "Are you near VA or TX?" Living in KY, obviously I picked VA.
Steam: "Nope you're wrong." Apparently GFN vm is closer to TX? Who knew?
Is there anything I can do?

Steam support notified me that I have a "gift purchasing restriction" when I inquired about helping me complete a gift purchase for my friend what even is this?! Never experienced something like this before, I haven't broken the steam rules, what should I do?

I’ve done a bit of surface-level research but I’ve only found posts from 10 years ago so I figured I should post here.
My screenshot is having upload troubles but here’s the full text of the error:
Steam Service Error
The Steam Service on your machine requires some maintenance. This service helps Steam install or update games, enables anti-cheat detection in some titles and assists with other system level tasks. Reinstalling the Steam service requires administrator privileges.
INSTALL SERVICE CANCEL
I imagine this is a fairly common and benign error and to just allow it to install what it needs. Steam worked just fine this morning and I haven’t adjusted any settings. There was a Windows update I needed installed and Steam did run an update as well but that’s pretty much normal I think? I’m mainly posting for the sake of curiosity. Some of those old posts seemed concerned that it was a fundamental issue with Steam issues where I’d need to delete all my games and delete Steam then reinstall everything. I doubt it’s that extreme… but still.
Thanks for any info and/or help!
Quick edit: I thought I should give more info; I was attempting to launch Fallout 4 via a desktop shortcut. The game fully launched in the background but over top is the large grey error banner. I’m on windows 11
Edit 2: It’s been about an hour. I ended up running the update. All seems well so far? Hoping it was just a bug or it actually needed an update or something.
Edit 3: It’s the next day and I’ve started and restarted Steam a few times just to see if it comes back and so far the popup hasn’t come back up at all. Steam is functioning 100% normally. I didn’t have to run anything as an administrator or change any settings. Nothing weird is running in the background either. I’m assuming it’s just an issue with that day’s Steam update along with that day’s Windows update. As far as I can tell there’s no virus or anything. When I installed it the process came directly from the Steam app so it should be okay… fingers crossed.

My steam account hacked and I have lost my account that I've had for a long time, I've contacted steam support does anyone know how long it usually takes them to respond for things like this???

I got charged and made a ticket and contacted my credit card. But I never went on my account and made this purchase. My card is not even on my account. I also changed my password. How could this happen though. It also says it is going to be mailed to my address
Update: steam contacted me about getting a refund today. I wanted to cancel my credit card because I just think it was odd and if it really was a scam, it could be used somewhere else. I don’t know if anyone else had experiences but it’s definitely one of the weirdest things because my address was on file and it was being sent to my address and also my card was being used. Nobody to my knowledge that I know has access to my account. I was on the phone with a friend when all this happened and made sure to contact the credit card and see them within the hour so that might’ve helped things not sure. I made sure to change my password as well.

I have over a $1k plus inventory and got banned out of no where and have no idea why. I added my new card I got from my bank and deposited funds and steam didn’t accept the transaction. I am tripping out that’s the only idea I have on why I was banned. Am I likely to get unbanned or am I just stuck with this???

Someone with an IP address in Colombia (nowhere near me) tried to access my account, so I did the responsible thing and immediately changed my password. The new password wouldn’t work, so I changed it a second time. The second password also wouldn’t work (?), and I got locked out of my account.
I reached out to Steam Support and provided them with my PayPal information, invoice #s, my billing address, etc. and they said I can’t regain access to my account without providing them the last 4 digits of my credit card from 2014?? Credit cards are good for 2-5 years, and I was a student then - my banking is totally different. I looked back in my email history, and I have no Steam purchase receipts from that far back.
I found an online order confirmation from a different company for a purchase made in December 2013, but apparently the card I used for that purchase didn’t match. Then they asked me to provide screenshots of order confirmations from “on or after 2024” that include invoice date, transaction ID, and invoice ID. I provided copies of four orders: two from 2024 and two from 2025. Apparently this is not sufficient evidence to prove account ownership even though it is exactly what they requested.
Am I just hooped? Is it normal for Steam Support to expect customers to provide 12 year old credit card information to prove their identity? Is it normal to deny proof of ownership when provided with invoices? I’m about to lose dozens of titles I have paid for - some I haven’t even found time to play yet - and I’m beyond frustrated.
Edited: the tense of the second paragraph because I wrote it while simultaneously dealing with support and it confused some commenters.

I got messages from a valve employee saying I had to verify my account, I tried to unfriend and block, but they pop’ed right back up. I tried to change my password but this is the state of my steam now. How did this happen? Im sure I’ve been compromised somehow, but how do I proceed? I’ve opened a ticket with support, but I’m very clean, use 2FA and never used any third party thing..

Someone got into my steam account and bought a bunch a shit using my card lile games, steam wallet money etc. And i reported the charges to chase and they undid the charges but Steam now views the unwanted steam wallet money and the other stuff going back to my account as "Chargebacks" and now they're asking me to undo the charges and if I dont my account will be restricted
r/steamsupport • u/Mysterious_Parsley30 • Aug 29 '26
This happened yesterday morning and steam still hasn't gotten back to me. I bought the game 11 days ago and have bought a few games in that time on the same card that went through just fine, but for some reason this one in particular was disputed by Amex according to steam.
Amex wasn't able to see that any chargeback or dispute was ever made but I can't see that the game ever charged to my account. If possible I would like to just re-buy the game on my debit card instead but not sure when steam will get back to me. With Amex saying they didn't do anything I really feel like I have no recourse here and am being punished for something completely out of my control.
Has anyone else had this happen? Were you able to clear things up with valve or did you have to wait the 4 weeks without being able to buy games? Wardogs comes out early next month and I was really looking forward to it.

Account created in 2008. Account value ~$7000.
0 other chargebacks/disputes.
0 bans in any game.
0 warnings of any kind until this.
If i had to guess, I bought this game on my phone, my phone autopopulated an amex i dont use often, I cancelled that amex because i don't use it, timing was bad. (Edit: found out its the same card i use every day for all my purchases) Amex doesnt have the transaction ID. Definitely did not dispute. Submitted a support req.
Not asking for special treatment but man this is miserable and seems like a gross overreach to restrict my account over literally pennies. Would gladly just rerun the transaction on any of my other active cards if that were an option.
Super dissapointed.
** EDIT
I was guessing it was that amex because that's the only explanation I could come up with, but looking at my transaction history on steam its the same amex i still use today, just bought games yesterday same card. Transaction for $3.26 not showing at all on Amex. Calling Amex to find out what happened. Still incredibly annoying to be treated this harshly. I did not dispute the transaction and had no reason to.
** UPDATE
Amex says the transaction does not exist, never posted - they can see steam transactions before Aug 17 and after Aug 17. Same card on every purchase.
** UPDATE 2
Steam support acknowledged the issue, removed the lock on my account, and are "still investigating"
** UPDATE 3
Steam support followed up and closed the case as resolved, they "talked to their payment processor" and validated the transaction existed and again requested I call back to American Express to find out and resolve what happened.
I called Amex again, and they all repeated the same - transaction does not exist. I asked to escalate, the next guy - same thing, transaction does not exist. I asked them what else I can do, or what they could do, American Express said there is no transaction so there is nothing they can do.
I re-opened the case with steam support and gave them all the information i have, screenshots and attachments of all my financials, offered to get on a call with them and Amex, and requested that they actually investigate what happened instead of blindly closing the case without looking into it at all.
Truly dissapointing how lackluster the support for Steam is, how unwilling they are to even consider that it might be an issue on their side OR an issue between them, their payment processor, and Amex, and to continue to blame me as if I have any control over any of that.
Despite how warm and welcoming this subreddit has been, I personally hope this doesn't happen to any of you and I am going to continue pursuing the support case with Steam until they figure out what actually happened. Hoping I can help prevent this from happening to others.

Edit: after replying that I didn't have that information and giving them different addresses, the ticket was escalated. The new support rep said the lock occurred because I purchased from EU, while the accounts usual activity was in the US. They sent me a new password (typed out in an email which is... Weird...) and will continue to monitor the account. Now I'm trying to reset the psw which is also not working but whatever, another issue for another time. I cheekily offered to provide them my full travel itinerary since they have stronger controls than my bank card, apparently. To answer some things noted below: no, the account isnt purchased. No, it isn't normal for someone to have a physical CD key from 20 years ago. No, it isn't normal to remember a random CC card number from 20 years ago. Yes, it can be normal to not know your address from 20 years ago since life can have you moving quite a bit, sometimes multiple times in a single year - addresses you register to ensure mail forwarding. Thanks for the help!
I'm abroad on vacation. Steam pops up to tell me a game I wanted is on sale. Sweet. I buy it.
Then it tells me I've been logged out of my account. Ok... Log back in using my password manager... Wrong password?
Then it tells me my account can't be logged into. Fine. Submit a support ticket. They ask for the last four of the CC and my address. Fair enough. I give it... They tell me it's wrong? And now they ask for the last four of my credit card and address from 2008!
2008! I don't remember my address from 2008, or what random CC I've certainly either lost or closed ten years ago. I've had this account since steam launched with thousands of games on it... When they inevitably tell me that "sorry not sorry" and close my account, is there any recourse?
Anyone else run into this? Am I just SOL?

So just got this ticket with steam saying they need more information. I instantly told steam it wasn't me and to ignore any further requests.
Now I'm wondering how much information you need to create a ticket like this. Is an email or login enough or does this person know my password or other things?

I've linked a fresh ubisoft account to my steam and tired to start up Seige and kept on getting this error like I never activated this game on a different account and can't even rebuy my games either to get a new license so I won't be able to play any ubisoft games I guess 😭🤟
Anyone know how to fix this

A user recently wrote to me that he accidentally reported me to Steam Support as a duper, even though he meant to report the profile that was duped.
In the chat he also apologizes for this and says I should follow the instructions as described in the picture above And write to the developer on discord,
has this happened to you too or is it real, what is the scam?

I am posting this here just to create more traffic, so it hopefully brings attention. I know I am not the only one with this issue, as I have recently read through so many posts here already about this.
I have the notorious issue a lot of people are having in the last few days:
-Contacted AMEX, they say there's no dispute
-Do not even see a transaction on the 17th
-See a new payment posted for that $9.99
-Have not heard back for a while
This is honestly pretty crazy that myself and so many others are going through this. I am hoping that more attention is brought to this so that Steam can at least can acknowledge this as an issue with a lot of people and not just an "isolated" one. A lot of us are innocent and this restriction is genuinely not our fault.
I hope everybody affected can get this solved, because this is quite an inconvenient and stressful experience.

Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out for advice regarding a permanent community ban I recently received on my Steam account. I’ve already contacted Steam Support, but their response was that the ban is permanent and they cannot provide further information and that futher tickets may be closes without reaponse. The picture of their response is attached.
I recently returned to Steam after about a year of inactivity.
I downloaded a few new games and tried adding funds to my Steam Wallet using a credit card with my updated legal name (I recently had my name legally changed).
During this time, I was using a VPN, but only for general internet security. I didn't use it to purchase any games, I however did have it on when adding funds to my wallet. I was unaware they had a probplem with VPNs back then.
One of the gamea I started playing on steam has a new account in there, but I’ve had experience with it elsewhere. I played some beginner levels, and maybe I came across as overly experienced, which might have been seen as cheating.
I’m completely in the dark about what triggered the ban. My account has no history of cheating or spamming and I’d like to understand what might have caused this and how to get the ban lifted if possible.
If anyone has experienced a similar situation or has advice on how I can talk to steam support without getting this sort of message I'd really appreciate it.
