Transportation Tesla 'Cannot Guarantee' Roadster Reservation Holders Will Ever Get a Car
https://www.thedrive.com/news/tesla-cannot-guarantee-roadster-reservation-holders-will-ever-get-a-car162
u/C-Towner 12h ago
You know how to take the reservation, you just don’t know how to hold it.

u/tomreece 12h ago
Was hoping to see this reference here. Thank you.

The fact that this is a car reservation just shows that that episode is an evergreen problem.

Anyone who still gives money to Tesla at all, let alone for a pre-order, is a moron and an asshole who shouldn’t be trusted with money in the first place

At first I was thinking “there are people who can drop $200-$500 on a vaporware deposit and it doesn’t phase them”, then I looked up what a deposit on a roadster cost… Jesus man, you’re not wrong. 50k deposit for the base model, and some dummies are dropping 250k for a car that’s never coming.
109
u/wps10 11h ago
Craziest part is, they’ve been taking those $50k deposits since 2017 when they first announced the 2nd gen Roadster and still haven’t delivered jack shit. It blows my mind that Tesla is still trustworthy in anyone’s eyes
39
2
u/fixnahole 44m ago
So it's like a Kickstarter that never materializes. Certainly more than a few stories of those--but not $50K worth!

u/emergencyexit 5h ago
When you put it like that it's kind of no wonder people are investing in TSLA. A business that can make money out of nothing? That's an appealing investment. At least until it's time to pay the piper.
6
u/LOLBaltSS 10h ago
If you really wanted a roadster designed by Hans that you can actually buy right now, there's always the Saturn Sky Red Line or Pontiac Solstice GXP and they'll be a fraction of the reserve price of the Tesla. Hell, you could even buy a Mallett version of either and still be way under $50k.
16
u/castironglider 9h ago
I can't begin to understand why Tesla is so special when there are alternative EV supercars
$208K is less than the Tesla deposit!

u/kawag 3h ago

The deposit for the 2017 roadster was $250,0000. Since then, the S&P500 has doubled twice. If these fools had invested that deposit instead of giving the richest man on the planet a free loan, they'd have a million bucks right now.
50
u/TommiHPunkt 9h ago
TSLA went from $2 in 2012 to $20 bucks in $2017 to ~$400 (wildly fluctuating) now.
The people buying into this hype are people who have tesla stocks and got rich with them
26
u/Ok_Second_2602 9h ago
Bingo. Deep down they don’t believe the bullshit coming out of Elon’s mouth. Tesla’s stock price defies reality, so Elon and the shareholders have to pretend these ridiculous demos will finally turn into an actual successful product. Elon hit a home run with the Model 3 and Y, and since then Tesla hasn’t been a serious company. It’s a stock fraud scheme driven by hype.
78
u/CaptainMonkeyJack 11h ago
I suspect most people putting $250k down in 2017 *already* have a million bucks.
→ More replies (1)7
u/YMS444 6h ago edited 1h ago
Not to say that Tesla's behavior here isn't shady, but the 2017 deposit was $ 50,000 (for a car that was announced to be priced at $ 200,000, or $ 250,000 for the first 1000 ones; and to reach production in 2020, of course). The additional $ 250,000 deposit tier for the "thrust" version has been introduced just now.
EDIT: 2020, not 202
3
u/wanderlustcub 7h ago
Well, something to consider is that 250k in 2017 is only worth 181k in 2026 dollars.
Though investing it would be a better move.

What’s nuts is that Tesla is worth all the other automakers combined and still can’t put out a car.
35
u/fredy31 4h ago
Really shows how stupid the stock market is.
Tesla is a new company compared to the fords or hyundai or ferraris.
The last decade:
- superstar ceo shown to be a fucking nazi.
- puts out cybertruck. A truck that cant do truck things.
- promise a new model. Cant deliver for years.
- and now they say they cant even deliver on preorders made.
Still most valuable car brand by a mile.

Just like the original roadster too. That one was "revealed" in 2017 and then the Muskrat kept making new promises about the timeline for years and years. Now we're here in 2026 and they have announced a new roadster that probably won't be released either. The people who are paying for this are downright gullible.

u/ST21roochella 3h ago
Lmao, it's almost as if the car was never produced and the stunt at the show was just a large RC car. Classic musk.

u/Lead_resource 2h ago
It was literally a stunt car I don't understand why people dont get it. We have had stunt cars doing this type of stuff since the 80s for movies and shows. A stunt car has usually a couple time uses and that it
16
u/sump_daddy 2h ago
Because Musk stood there insisting this is the new production roadster, that it would be driving on racetracks very soon, that it would be on preorder and it would be coming to dealerships after that.
So what youre saying is, 'why dont people get that Musk is totally full of shit in everything he says'
that, i guess, is the trillion dollar question

u/Blando-Cartesian 6h ago
Did Tesla ever produce the full self driving update that customers paid extra for some 15 years ago?

Never going to be a real car, it's pure gimmick.

u/Robin_Banks101 11h ago
7 seconds according to Tesla. It also takes 6 hours to refill and there are "infrastructure issues" they haven't solved yet. In other words it absolutely doesn't work.

And probably just a big plastic shell. If you pause the video during the aerial view of the flip, you can see the underside of the car. It's just a large, unserviceable plastic panel.
2
2
u/Gwthrowaway80 3h ago
There’s not many features on the bottom of any teslas. Most have a flat metal skid plate covering the battery. Outside of some suspension components that might be visible, they are pretty featureless.
I am not saying this is a real car, I’m just saying this is not evidence one way or another.
2
→ More replies (3)2
u/asphaltdragon 10h ago
Most high end vehicles do that to the underside for aerodynamics. Not saying it's not fake, but a giant plastic panel doesn't mean it's unserviceable, just that the panel may need to be removed.
5
u/Ok-Mastodon2420 10h ago
This car is supposed to have an "active vacuum" system on the underside, not a plastic frame

I get a huge PR event like the one Tesla did will drive engagement, from both sides of the spectrum, with various degrees of automotive knowledge. What I detest is clickbait headlines like this from people who should know better, such as automotive journalists.
Should we be skeptical about Tesla's promises and their timelines? Yes. History has repeatedly shown them overpromising things, time and time again.
Is the wording in the preorder agreement evidence for that? No. The article quotes the preorder agreement: "You understand that Roadster is still under development at the time you entered into this Agreement and so we cannot guarantee when your vehicle will actually be delivered or if it will be delivered." That, on its surface, seems like damning evidence right? Especially for us who don't regularly read pre-order agreements. It sounds like Tesla is plain telling us they have no confidence they can deliver.
However, all it takes is a cursory look at other manufacturers' preorder agreements, and you will find similar wording - regardless of how trustworthy or how much of a vaporware their upcoming product is. For example, this is a generic wording for Ford's preorder agreement:
By completing the Reservation Process, you are not ordering or purchasing a vehicle... Participation in the Program does not guarantee you vehicle delivery... Ford, at its sole discretion, may decline or cancel your Reservation at any time, for any reason... Ford reserves the right to change, update, improve, correct, modify, suspend, discontinue or cancel all or part of the Program...
Each Reservation you submit for a Vehicle acts as a deposit for a future purchase of the Vehicle. You are under no obligation to purchase a Vehicle from us, and we are under no obligation to supply you with a Vehicle.
This is standard boilerplate legal phrasing because companies understand there is always a possibility of changing production plans. Is Tesla more at risk of not delivering than these other two manufacturers? Possibly. But the inclusion of this type of phrasing is not evidence of that.
