Do you think Bobby actually sat and pondered the back thing with Notre Dame? Is that the dumbest thing a character on the show admitted to doing?

Prior to that conversation, do you think Bobby sat by himself thinking about the hunch back, quarter back and half back of Notre Dame?

What were his thoughts? It’s a conspiracy? It’s God’s doing? One’s a fucking cathedral?

Is that the dumbest thing a character on the show ever admitted to doing?

For me it has to be Christopher and its not even close.

Runner ups would be

Johnny sack

Adrianna la cerva

Ralphie Cifaretto

I don't think any other death touched me as much tho. Maybe Gene who hanged himself

Everyone thinks they’re Tony, but they’re actually Artie.

They could build an empire like Bobby Flay, and it wouldn’t make a difference.

Why did Tony not let Eugene leave the Mafia?

I'm not a Mafia expert but I feel like having a guy who clearly didn't want to be in the Mafia anymore would have been a major liability for Tony? Eugene had become a millionaire so there was no reason for him to remain in the Mafia anymore, he was even willing to pay Tony to allow him to leave yet Tony still refused?

Long Term Parking

Did Christopher decide not to go into witness protection at the gas station?

When he sees the dirt bag with kids, does he think hey, if that loser can have kids then why should I stick with Adriana if she can’t. He realizes he has no future with her, but he still wants to have kids. This leads him to call Tony.

What happened to the body of Fat Dom after going into the unknown?

We perfectly see what happened after the fat fuck decided to break Carlo's balls but what probably happened to his body afterwards apart from his head going down the drain?

Since watching the show I keep finding myself talking about the show all the time. I kind of wonder what was the scene that sold people on the sopranos?

Serious Discussion Only Gloria Trillo

Rewatching the series again and I was thinking about what lessons did Tony learn by dating Gloria?

If she had not threatened his home life, does anyone think that Gloria could have been a long term goomar for Tony?

Gloria had it all and yet deep down she felt she had nothing.

When Dr. Melfi was describing her behavior to someone else she made it seem like Gloria’s problems were because she was whiny and ungrateful about her life.

I liked her character because she was classy, and independent in her work life. But I also liked her because she was codependent and needy in her personal life.

She was trying to get help from Dr. Melfi but I still struggle with understanding why?

And once Tony realizes her issues why did he continue to deal with her until he couldn’t?

Gloria reminded Tony of something he did or didn’t get from his mother but I couldn’t figure it out.

The way things ended with those two still bothers me to this day and it’s why I do so many rewatches to figure it out .

He's not Italian so he could never get made anyways, what does he actually get out of it? Maybe that's why he just drove away when things went wrong lol, he thought "Fuck this, what the hell am I even doing here to begin with?"

Serious Discussion Only Chris’s feeling about Adriana being wacked?

Why does it feel like Christopher doesn’t spend anytime mourning or feeling guilt over Adriana. They were together for so long and of course I’m sure it’s to show just how much he has convinced himself it was the right thing to do because she was nothing but a dirty rat but no fully fleshed out storyline of inner conflict or turmoil about losing the one person who truly cared for him? Idk maybe that’s the point. I guess it shows his all consuming loyalty to Tony. What do others think? I would have liked to see him be more haunted by his choice more because it would show just how contradictory he is like every other character at some point in the series.

Quotes I want you to sanction a hit on Ralph Cifaretto.

He violated my wife’s *honor*.

He *insulted* her! He made a very insensitive joke about her body to some friends of ours.

I have to repeat it? My word’s not *good* enough?

He said she was having a 90-pound mole removed from her *ass*. The implication was her ass is *so* big, she could have a mole that size *removed* from it.

So many tragedies in less than a decade. This family has more bad luck than the Kennedys. Sad. Rosalie must have been worn out from all the funerals she had to attend.

Tony Soprano was probably happiest when he was lying to himself.

Whenever he had a chance to change, he found an excuse to go back to being the same person. Therapy gave him the tools to understand himself, but he mostly used that understanding to justify his behavior.

I think that’s what makes his character so disturbing. He wasn’t incapable of understanding right and wrong. He just rarely cared enough to change.

Do you think Tony ever genuinely wanted to become a better person, or did he only want to feel less guilty?

Serious Discussion Only Does anyone else feel bad for Junior?

I just finished watching Sopranos, and Junior has to be my favorite character.

I understand at the beginning of the show when we are first introduced to Junior, he can be seen as a frankly unlikeable character, especially when he tries to put a hit on Tiny, and listening to Livia’s nonsense.

As the series progresses though, and especially when his dementia peaks, does anyone else feel bad for him? To me, it feels like most of the family understands somewhat he has dementia, but at the same time they don’t understand fully how dementia effects an individual mentally or physically.

It sounded like although everyone else but Tony understood on some level that Junior shooting Tony was due to his dementia, after he is hospitalized, except maybe a visit or two from Janice, Bobby, or Junior’s friends, no one comes to visit or sends mail.

I mean isn’t the point of this show that blood and family are everything?

After he mistakes Tony for Pussy, and shoots him, barely any family come to visit him, and although he don’t see his death in the show, it’s most likely he dies alone.

It’s sad seeing him so lonely. You can tell especially towards the end of the show when his dementia progresses, that although he has that angry streak in him, his demeanor is rather childlike and innocent, to the point where when Tony finally goes to visit him at the end of the series, Tony himself can’t even be angry or mad at him, although he tries to be at the start of the visit.

I suppose it’s a very honest and realistic scenario. Many older adults are placed into care homes and are forgotten. Many older adults in these care homes made choices in their lives that prevent continued connections, and many die alone due to it.

Is Hugh's affection for Tony at his birthday party unearned?

Edit: these are all valid points but I mean in terms of the writing. None of this really came up before that episode

In the episode with Carmela's dad's 75th, they go on about how much he loves Tony. After watching the show several times it always feels out of place. There's not much hint of that before that, and even a few episodes earlier he suggests Carmela move on.

Many posts in this sub come down to binge-watchers not understanding that there are gaps of at least a year between seasons, and that the show wasn't all mapped out in advance, hence there are some blips in continuity.

• Upvotes

"Why didn't Chris mourn for Adriana? He got over her too quickly."

Because there's a two year gap between s5 when she was whacked, and s6.

"Tony didn't really love Carmela, because he tried it on with Adriana/Melfi so soon after they split up"

There's an approx 18–24 month gap from Whitecaps (summer 2002) to early-mid season 5 (2004), during which time they have been separated with Tony living alone. To the binge-watcher, it seems like they split up in Whitecaps, and then one week later he's trying to get with Melfi.

"Ralph couldn't have been the father of Tracee's baby, because he was incapable of having normal sex"

In s3, Ralph was a regular guy having normal sex. The fact that Tracee said he was the father shows they were having normal sex. The "Ralph is a sexual freak and can't have normal sex" storyline was just something they introduced in s4, after they had written/aired s3. The whole show is not planned out in advance, they just made one season at a time. Similarly:

"If Vito is gay, why was he calling Adriana when Chris was in rehab?"

Because Vito wasn't gay until they wrote that storyline for him in s5. In s2-4 he was a regular supporting mob character. S4 was the end of the contract with HBO and Chase didn't plan to do another season. When he was persuaded to return and do s5, they came up with a new sub-plot that Vito is secretly gay. You can head-canon an explanation to make this fit if you want to (like he was trying to pretend he wasn't gay), but the actual reason is that Vito wasn't gay when they made s4.

"Why did Janice have a baby in s6, when she gave no indication she wanted more kids in s5?"

Similar to the previous entry, because when they wrote s5, Chase didn't even know there would be a s6. When he was persuaded to return for another season, he decided that Janice and Bobby should have a baby now.

It's not all planned out in advance. I think modern binge-watchers have an assumption that it was, and then have a hard time reconciling continuity blips and have to tie themselves in knots trying to make sense of it. Chase was willing to fudge continuity a bit if it suited the story in a new episode/season.
