Many posts in this sub come down to binge-watchers not understanding that there are gaps of at least a year between seasons, and that the show wasn't all mapped out in advance, hence there are some blips in continuity.

• Upvotes

"Why didn't Chris mourn for Adriana? He got over her too quickly."

Because there's a two year gap between s5 when she was whacked, and s6.

"Tony didn't really love Carmela, because he tried it on with Adriana/Melfi so soon after they split up"

There's an approx 18–24 month gap from Whitecaps (summer 2002) to early-mid season 5 (2004), during which time they have been separated with Tony living alone. To the binge-watcher, it seems like they split up in Whitecaps, and then one week later he's trying to get with Melfi.

"Ralph couldn't have been the father of Tracee's baby, because he was incapable of having normal sex"

In s3, Ralph was a regular guy having normal sex. The fact that Tracee said he was the father shows they were having normal sex. The "Ralph is a sexual freak and can't have normal sex" storyline was just something they introduced in s4, after they had written/aired s3. The whole show is not planned out in advance, they just made one season at a time. Similarly:

"If Vito is gay, why was he calling Adriana when Chris was in rehab?"

Because Vito wasn't gay until they wrote that storyline for him in s5. In s2-4 he was a regular supporting mob character. S4 was the end of the contract with HBO and Chase didn't plan to do another season. When he was persuaded to return and do s5, they came up with a new sub-plot that Vito is secretly gay. You can head-canon an explanation to make this fit if you want to (like he was trying to pretend he wasn't gay), but the actual reason is that Vito wasn't gay when they made s4.

"Why did Janice have a baby in s6, when she gave no indication she wanted more kids in s5?"

Similar to the previous entry, because when they wrote s5, Chase didn't even know there would be a s6. When he was persuaded to return for another season, he decided that Janice and Bobby should have a baby now.

It's not all planned out in advance. I think modern binge-watchers have an assumption that it was, and then have a hard time reconciling continuity blips and have to tie themselves in knots trying to make sense of it. Chase was willing to fudge continuity a bit if it suited the story in a new episode/season.

Serious Discussion Only Gloria Trillo

Rewatching the series again and I was thinking about what lessons did Tony learn by dating Gloria?

If she had not threatened his home life, does anyone think that Gloria could have been a long term goomar for Tony?

Gloria had it all and yet deep down she felt she had nothing.

When Dr. Melfi was describing her behavior to someone else she made it seem like Gloria’s problems were because she was whiny and ungrateful about her life.

I liked her character because she was classy, and independent in her work life. But I also liked her because she was codependent and needy in her personal life.

She was trying to get help from Dr. Melfi but I still struggle with understanding why?

And once Tony realizes her issues why did he continue to deal with her until he couldn’t?

Gloria reminded Tony of something he did or didn’t get from his mother but I couldn’t figure it out.

The way things ended with those two still bothers me to this day and it’s why I do so many rewatches to figure it out .

Serious Discussion Only In my Opinion? SOPRANOS is the GOAT TV show. I can understand Why someone might think The Wire or Mad Men is better but Breaking Bad?? That i just do not get

Breaking Bad is good the first time. But it has absolutely no rewatch value. So much of the show is “How Will Walt and Jesse make it out of this jam? Stay tuned, same Bat Time same Bat Channel.

The show itself is…fine? I guess. But it’s contrived as hell. Quote baiting. Or moments that borderline break the 4th wall. (Why does Gus walk to camera and straighten out his tie with half his face blown off? Because they thought fans would love it and would look cool.

That’s why Sopranos rules all. David Chase didn’t give two fucks if anyone thought what he was doing was “cool”. In fact he fought against it. He could’ve had Tony & crew whacking people left and right. Instead he went for the slow burn. The anti climax. You could never see what Sopranos had coming. The show was its own thing. It never bowed to anyone.

Breaking Bad? It’s an entertaining thriller. But there a lot of style with not as much substance. It doesn’t make me question anything beyond some lazy plot mechanics. It feels like the writers were constantly writing themselves into corners with zero idea how they’d get out which is why everything feels unreal.

Anyways. When I see someone say The Wire is their fav show or the GOAT. I might disagree but I can at least understand where they are coming from. It’s a great show. Amazing. But Breaking Bad? Nah

Do you think Bobby actually sat and pondered the back thing with Notre Dame? Is that the dumbest thing a character on the show admitted to doing?

Prior to that conversation, do you think Bobby sat by himself thinking about the hunch back, quarter back and half back of Notre Dame?

What were his thoughts? It’s a conspiracy? It’s God’s doing? One’s a fucking cathedral?

Is that the dumbest thing a character on the show ever admitted to doing?

Tony Soprano was probably happiest when he was lying to himself.

Whenever he had a chance to change, he found an excuse to go back to being the same person. Therapy gave him the tools to understand himself, but he mostly used that understanding to justify his behavior.

I think that’s what makes his character so disturbing. He wasn’t incapable of understanding right and wrong. He just rarely cared enough to change.

Do you think Tony ever genuinely wanted to become a better person, or did he only want to feel less guilty?

Long Term Parking

Did Christopher decide not to go into witness protection at the gas station?

When he sees the dirt bag with kids, does he think hey, if that loser can have kids then why should I stick with Adriana if she can’t. He realizes he has no future with her, but he still wants to have kids. This leads him to call Tony.

Mayhem

I don’t usually cry, even at my saddest moments but something weirdly hit me about Tony in the hospital bed. Especially when meadow saves him from death with her voice. It felt so raw and authentic to see a show that glamorized mafia life to a dying person in the hospital. The symbolism of Kevin Finnerty as well and how Tony dreamt of another life really makes me think how vulnerable these made guys really are.

P.S - for some reason, this episode did make me cry as it hits close to home seeing someone in the hospital bed after having an uncle who passed away in a similar state. May be a biased review of the episode but wow there’s a reason this is genuinely the best show ever made.

Why did Tony not let Eugene leave the Mafia?

I'm not a Mafia expert but I feel like having a guy who clearly didn't want to be in the Mafia anymore would have been a major liability for Tony? Eugene had become a millionaire so there was no reason for him to remain in the Mafia anymore, he was even willing to pay Tony to allow him to leave yet Tony still refused?

Junior’s surfboard gift

I think it’s so funny how this one line ends up being interpreted
I have seen people say he meant skate board and that shows his lack of caring but I feel like it’s clear Junior just bought him a surfboard that AJ never used because he doesn’t surf (nor skate really)

Episode Discussion My breakdown of the Ade/Ton storyline (S05E05)

This storyline really bothers me because in no world should there be any type of chemistry between Barney Rubble and a knockout (a 10). So, I dissected it and came to the realization that it was manufactured by Ade intentionally. She realized she's in love with the nephew/cousin of a mob boss, and contrary to popular belief, she was not as naive as people like to make her out to be. She was definitely a saint in her actions, but she definitely wasn't a complete and total stunad. She always knew of the life the men around her lived, what they did, why they did it, and maybe even a little bit of how they did it. She wasn't some random girl from Jersey. She was the niece of the famous Jackie and Richie Aprile, and growing up fatherless, they must've been father figures to her and present in her life, representing the two different sides of the men in the mob and, more importantly, the two different sides of a father, until Richie went to jail. So she was deprived of that psychopathic, narcissistic, sick fuck vibe, influence, ... love.

Hence, her eventual relationship with Christopher, who mirrored Richie to a degree that made it almost uncanny. They were both extremely short-tempered, violent, narcissistic, and hypocritical (Richie getting mad at Chrissy for beating Ade before they're married when he full-on punched Janice in the mouth shortly after this, and there was no ring on her finger either). She never left Christopher for treating her like shit because it reminded her of her uncle Richie who was like a father to her. She wasn't a masochist or anything, but subconsciously, she felt a sense of familiarity and connection to Christopher when he beat her, even if she physically recoil in pain. As for Christopher, he treated her the way he did because he was a narcissistic sociopath.

Now that we have Adriana's psyche mapped out, and the motivations that come with it, let's discuss the big purple dinosaur in the room. Tony represented something she thought she already had in the form of two different people in her life: first Jackie Sr., and now Tony (two older, protective, alpha male figures). Except, as we all know, and I'd argue Adriana realized at some point between becoming a rat in S04E02 and S05E05, that Tony was no Jackie Sr. He only pretended to be. Sure, he was older, but with his protection and alpha male behavior came his little cannoli too, and he wanted to fuck her fucking brains out with it.

The fact that he was divorced, emotionally unstable, and looking to restart a family with a younger, hotter broad (as the ultimate fuck you to Carmela) only added to his attraction to Adriana, and I think on some level, Adriana understood all of this and used it masterfully.

After she flipped, in the timespan between S04E02 and S05E05, she knew she'd be killed for it and there was no way out. Without a shadow of a doubt, she did. And she didn't tell Christopher immediately because she knew what Uncle Richie would've done to her if he knew she flipped, and she didn't tell Tony either because by then she knew he was no Jackie Sr. She was between a rock and a hard place, the hard place being Tony's cannoli.

People often debate what would've happened if they hadn't crashed in S05E05. And I think I finally figured it out. She wanted to get him absolutely wasted on coke. That's why she immediately obliged when he offered to drive her there. She already had a ride on the way. Why get an already coked-up Tony Soprano to drive you there unless you wanted to do more coke with him.
I think, she wanted to get him absolutely wasted on coke so he'd let his guard down completely. Then she'd use whatever means she felt were necessary (sexual acts) to get this already emotionally unstable and coked-up Tony Soprano to form a sort of bond with her build through his favourite thing in the world (sex), that she coud later exploit to get him to discuss business with her, which she could later share with the feds and get him put away. But they crashed, and all that other bullshit happened, and Tony got put in horny jail around her, at least visibly, for the rest of her life (which wasn't too long after the crash).

So the way out through seducing him also closed on her, and she was genuinely left with no option but to approach Richie (Chrissy) when shit hit the fan with Matush and the feds inevitably pushed her harder than ever to flip completely. And as she always feared and knew, Richie pulled a Richie and had her whacked (because Chris had his own case of the frog and scorpion).

Ultimately, I think Adriana was far more complex than she let on and genuinely street-smart, but lacked a lot of what people understood to be knowledge that came with having common sense. Hence, people always looked down at her as if she were a stunad of the largest magnitude (not knowing Matush was a terrorist, not knowing Christopher was fully unfaithful with her, etc., etc.). But every instance that's supposed to prove she was "naive" just proves that she lacks knowledge, either because her heightened compassion blinds her to it or because her lack of homework in that particular field has led to her not understanding how it works.

I'm not debating the effectiveness of her proposed plan in this theory of mine (in my personal opinion, it would've failed spectacularly and probably gotten her killed by Christopher for sleeping with Tony, which is sad because she literally would've done it for them). All I'm trying to say is that she was nowhere near as naive as people make her out to be.

Naivety and lacking knowledge in many different fields are inherently different states to be in, but because they have similar repercussions, people often act as if they were interchangeable states of mind.

TL;DR: Ade was never truly attracted to Barney Rubble. She just thought she could use him to get the life that she wanted for herself and Christopher. This is partly why she became upset so quick with her handler in the next episode when her handler suggested exploiting the newfound relationship with Tony to get information. And the reason for her reaction to the statement being negative was because there was never a relationship (just a failed attempt at a one night stand with a very important reason at its centre), and when it wasn't recognized as such this disgusted her. She saw Barney Rubble as a means to an end, but when that means closed on her, not that it would have brought her to the end that she sought, she inevitably met her demise.

He's not Italian so he could never get made anyways, what does he actually get out of it? Maybe that's why he just drove away when things went wrong lol, he thought "Fuck this, what the hell am I even doing here to begin with?"
