in the wild small town drama over “stealing” a name
for context: a teacher in my hometown recently named her child Tripp Riggins, first and middle. Her cousin copied the name three months later, and this is the BD’s response to the teacher’s callout post.

u/SSE40 3d ago
All of this over, of all names, Tripp Riggins…. Tripp. Riggins. I am TIRED.

u/SSE40 3d ago
Fun fact, my cousin also named her son the exact same name as my son a year or two later lol. Everyone else was way more upset over it than I was. I always figured joke was on her bc she very obviously copied the name. Took it as a compliment 😂

u/scrapsten_ 3d ago
I can’t believe how common this is? My best friend had a son in February and her husband’s cousin is using the same first and middle name for their son coming later this year. I thought that was so strange, I’m shocked to see it happens to others!

u/KatJen76 3d ago
I read this too fast and thought there was a randomized Tripp Riggins baby boomlet on.
43
u/0123justme0123 3d ago
Genuinely curious were the names more common, like top 30 or so? If it was like Oliver Liam, I can see that happening, it seems more likely two people could have both loved that combo of two popular names. Tripp Riggins on the other hand seems like it must be a copy.
1
u/Mundane_Preference_8 7h ago
That’s happened more than once in my husband’s family. Multiple pregnancies and popular combinations of names. Everyone knew there was no copying and no one was offended. It is a little confusing though.

u/ShowMeYourHappyTrail 1d ago
I mean, family members are more likely to like the same things. And family having the same name used to happen all the time back in the day. I can see why you wouldn't want to do that just so you aren't calling for one of them and get the other, etc. But, I think the fervor over "OMG! You stole my name!" is a little eh. Of course, I wouldn't name my kid the same name as one in my family either so there's that. LOL! I'm kind of glad I only had one kid because both my sister-in-law on my husband's side and my brother and his ex-wife both named their kids a name I would have used for a second child.
41
u/ArtyCatz 3d ago
When I was pregnant with my son (before we found out we were having a boy), my ex-husband said if it was a girl, he wanted the first name to be the same name as one of his childhood crushes, and the middle name to be his oldest niece’s first name (so yeah, naming the child in part after her first cousin).
I said no way in hell would I agree to that! And thankfully it wasn’t an issue since we had a boy. One of the approximately 35 million reasons the guy I married was an idiot.
51
u/Print-Dull 3d ago
My father named me After his 2 previous girlfriends.
I don't understand how my mom let that fly.15
u/LadybugCalico 2d ago
I'm named after some random woman my dad knew but my mom didn't. My mom found out where my name actually came from when I was about 7 months old
6
u/Resident-Condition-2 2d ago
My ex and I had a hard naming our daughter because we wanted her to have her own identity and she couldn't be named after someone else we knew, past or present
1
u/UndrPrtst 2d ago
My grandmother thought she'd pulled that off with my mom's name, only to learn years later that a multi great grandmother on grandpa's side had the same first and middle names. 😆
3
u/Wodentoad 2d ago
My middle name is a "family friend" I've never met or even heard of except to know I was named after her, neither parent said much. First name was sorta after I'm favorite uncle, but it was popular the year I was born, would have preferred the feminized version of his name.
2
u/morbidmistress420 2d ago
Wow, I never would have excepted so many woman had such a similar baby name story as I did!
8
u/morbidmistress420 2d ago
Sadly, my daughter was named after a girl that had a crush on my sprem donor. How ever I didnt know the story to the name till it was to late!
8
u/Kseplion 2d ago
Asking your wife to name your child after ANOTHER woman you had feelings for is crazy. Who does he think he is, Bella Swan?
4
u/ArtyCatz 2d ago
Someday I might write a book about what a crazy wacko he is. Best thing I’ve ever done is have my son, second-best is divorcing my wonderful son’s insane, abusive father.
6
u/shadowwithinthevoid 1d ago
My first husband seriously thought I fed baby through my belly button while pregnant. Just reason #4918 of why I'm not longer married to that idiot.
14
u/sixTeeneingneiss 3d ago
I was a wee tot when it happened, but two of my cousins are named Amanda. We are all very close in age and I hear that was a squabble lmao
6
u/Print-Dull 3d ago
Okay So my na name is Sharyl I had 2 aunts One was Cheryl and the other was Shirley. Sure was confusing when we were together
2
u/ribblefizz 2d ago
One branch of my family has Eugene, Eugene-called-Gene, Jeanne, Jean, Jeannie, Geanette, Regena, and Ray Gene. Only like two of these people are intentionally named after one of the others; most of them are in-laws or distant cousins who don't really know each other and didn't find out about cousin's babies' names until years later.
The "family founders" on the side I know about were Herman and Estelle, so it wasn't just being named in honor of people.
6
u/PostmodernWapiti 2d ago
You must have been born in the late 70’s or early 80’s. I have THREE cousin Amandas myself.
22
u/KtP_911 3d ago
This happened to my friend also. She named her son Kamden Lee. Spelled with a K to honor a family tradition on her side, Lee was paternal grandfather’s name. Her cousin had a son four months later and named him Camden Lee. Cousin insisted that Kamden and Camden were completely different names, but then openly admitted that she chose Lee as his middle name because she liked how friend’s son’s name sounded. Friend just shook her head and said she was glad people liked the name she chose.
1
u/Forsaken_Earth944 2d ago
My father's sister-in-law's best friend's eldest almost ended up with the same first and middle name as my dad's older nephew - he was born a week after my cousin, and his mum decided at the last minute to switch the order (he's Edward Thomas) to avoid confusion.
1
u/mildly_ethnic 2d ago
Is this not a compliment?? My dad named my brother after his favorite cousin’s son, and then gave me the girl version of the same name 😂

u/ElderMillennialGoat 3d ago
Should be real easy to "get over it" and name him something/anything else: how about Liam LeRoy since you're fixed upon "hillbilly".

I didn’t read it closely enough for any context clues but I do know some Rigginses in Texas so you may be on to something 💀

u/UbiquitousChicken 3d ago
Yeah the post says it’s the same first and middle name. So Riggins is definitely a middle name and not the surname.
1
u/Alive_Helicopter_158 2d ago
I know Riggins as a surname, and it’s not a particularly attractive one so I never fathomed it as not a surname 😭

I mean, if you're going to have the most uniquest name in the whole wide small town, then it just won't do to have two people with the mostest unique name!

Trip or Tripp is a common nickname for boys who are named after their father and grandfather. Like John Jingleheimersmidt the Third ( or III). Third … Triple … Tripp.
21
u/dumbass_sempervirens 3d ago
As a Trey (also the third. (Ace, duece, trey)) it seemed like the Trip kids had more fun parents.

u/thatprickdylanthomas 3d ago
That is the dumbest name I've ever heard wow
I have a cousin who is 7 years older than me. Our names are similar, think like Emily and Emilia. Different but similar. My mom got so much shit for it, despite that I was named after her favourite actress and it had nothing to do with my cousin's name, nor did I even meet that cousin until I was like 8 or 9. We lived in two different countries lol

u/bumblebragg 3d ago edited 2d ago
Yeah, everyone is the asshole in this scenario. No one should have taken to Facebook on either side but naming your kid the same exact name as your cousins kid three months later is a jerk move even if your husband is taking the credit.
15
u/lampshade2099 2d ago
I had to scroll too far for this (correct) take.
Naming your kid the EXACT SAME name as your cousins 3-month-old baby is weird… plain and simple.
Getting pressed over it, and taking the beef to Facebook is petty.
But if my cousin named their kid the exact same name as my newborn, I’d find it funny and weird and confusing.
10
u/U1ys3s 2d ago
Even worse, the same first and middle name
7
u/bumblebragg 2d ago
That just makes it seem like they are deliberately trolling the cousin. There is no excuse for it and it sounds like this is a small town. It's not the same as having two John Smiths. Just rude all around. I'd be pissed too.
2
u/poets_pendulum 2d ago
Don’t we often say in this subreddit that no one owns a name? 😆
5
13
u/MarbleTheShoulderCat 2d ago
Yeah, but I feel like that usually reserved for when two people both like the same first name. Using the same first and middle of a family member in the same small town is weird.
4
u/g0blinzez 2d ago
Yeah, the "no one owns a name" is for accidents, like when two unrelated people who don't know each other happen to use the same common first name, not something that was blatantly and obviously not an accident because they copied both the first and middle names of a clearly uncommon name. Nobody owns Billy-Joe or Samantha or Sophie. But Tripp Riggins? Seriously? You don't "mistakenly" name your child after another child in the same family three months apart, knowing that's going to cause issues, knowing they're going to have to be interacting at family gatherings potentially.
19
17
u/NeutralGeneric 3d ago
I think this is going over my head. Is the issue the dad is running into that there was already another kid named Tripp Riggins, or is there something else controversial about the name? Besides it just sounding dumb of course.
28
u/black_dragonfly13 3d ago
My understanding is that a teacher (W1) named her son Tripp Riggins. Then another woman (W2) a few months later also named her son Tripp Riggins. The teacher (W1) then called her (W2) out about it on Facebook, and then the guy in the above post, father to baby of W2, is responding to the teacher (W1)'s call out post. I think. 😅
28
u/nematoadstool 3d ago
yes, just to add that the teacher is her cousin. She made this post not even 24 hours after the baby was born.
5
u/black_dragonfly13 3d ago
Are they close? I've met mine literally once, so if they & I ended up with babies that had the same name, it would be a completely shocking coincidence.
21
u/kaytay3000 3d ago
My cousin and I both have daughters named Ellie. We aren’t close and it’s no big deal. My other cousin and I had our second babies 3 weeks apart. She named her daughter after our grandmother and I named my son after our grandfather. No discussion beforehand, just a happy little accident.
At the end of the day, it’s no big deal to have the same name as someone else. What does suck is that Tripp Riggins is a dog name.
6
u/EinsTwo 2d ago
It says it's small town drama. You definitely know your cousins...and everyone else... in a small town.
4
u/g0blinzez 2d ago
right? Like, those kids are definitely going to be interacting, and there's going to be weird tension between them now because of the parents' beef. This is how a petty generational blood feud starts lmfao!
5
u/Evening_Jury8686 2d ago
Not only that they will likely be in the same grade at the same school! So that will suck. One of these kids is getting a nickname quickly.

Something I find so bizarre about this is … when did Tripp become a name in its own right?? Is this a Sarah Palin thing, like how my dumb high school friend who moved to Alaska named her daughter Bristol?
I thought Trip/Tripp was a common nickname for a boy who is a “the third.” So if your grandpa’s name was John Thomas and he went by John, your dad’s name was John Thomas and he went by Junior or JT, and you were named John Thomas and the regular name and obvious nickname were taken, you’d go by Trip/Tripp (as in, triple generations with that name). It should emphatically not be its own standalone name, that is dumb!!! The word literally means to stumble and/or fall!

Wait, so 'Riggins' is NOT the last name but is a middle name?? Why?? What am I missing about this name that other people would actually want it?

u/browneyedgirl71156 1d ago
When my son was three months old another family at church named their newborn the exact same first and middle name as my son, it was a normal name but not commonly used. I only casually knew the mother but happened to be near her one day so I asked what made them pick that name. It turned out that the first name was Dads middle name and childs middle name was grandfather's name. I had just pulled my sons name out of thin air so, technically, they had more rights to the name than I did lol.

I think those people don’t know that and just think it sounds cool? So embarrassing. Just like I think it’s a little embarrassing to give your child a surname as a first name unless you have a connection with that surname. (I’m in the minority here on this sub in that I like the tradition of using, say, mom’s or grandma’s maiden name as a child’s first or middle name.)
3
u/Separate_Ingenuity35 2d ago

My next door neighbor named her puppy Mia, after my dog (her name from the shelter), because she liked the sound of it. For like four years there were two Mias barking at delivery drivers and whatnot, and I never felt comfortable telling my dog to knock it off because I worried she'd think I was scolding her dog.

u/turtlewingsaway 2d ago
My dad had the name for his first son picked out since he was a kid (yes, he was a bit of an odd child). It was a perfectly normal name, not like the nonsense in the post. Around the time my parents had their third girl, Dad's younger brother had a son... and used nearly the same name (same first, different middle but it rhymes with the middle Dad picked). My dad was like "wtf bro" and my uncle just shrugged like "oh, that's why it sounded familiar."
A few years later, my brother was finally born, and yes, my parents did use the name Dad had wanted all those years. Since it was a normal name, it didn't stick out like freaking Tripp Riggins, and we just called them by different nicknames. We do joke that future genealogists will hate us for having two [FirstName] [LastNames] (with rhyming middles!) in the same generation, lol.

u/HereFromFB 2d ago
I did some Facebook hunting! This is in Kentucky. And the mom of Tripp Riggins #1 posted his 3 month picture and put “#OG” on it on the same day that Tripp Riggins #2 was announced 🤣

u/seashellsandcastle 2d ago
My husband’s cousin called us when they were having their first. The only name they could agree on was the name of our 18 month old. They asked if we would mind if they used the name. We said yes because we don’t own a name. We didn’t spend a whole lot of time with them so it wasn’t like they were going to grow up being “name” 1 and “name” 2.
Jokes on all of us though. That name ended up being a trend name in the years that followed so there are a tonne of them. Plus, the two families grew closer and the kids grew up camping together frequently. The matching names was still not a problem 🤷♀️.
