People do not go outside enough to fret about sunscreen.

As someone in the skin care space. I see how devastatingly fear mongered people are with sunscreen. How much money people spent on it. And how much people fret over it. I’ve heard about people literally avoiding going outside or running back home to reapply it.

Firstly given how much it is advocated by doctors and stuff. I’ll admit it holds much significance.

But given people who have the capacity to really care about this, live in the west. Probably above average in disposable income, which intern means they probably stay indoors most of the time. For job/school/their hobbies.

I’m your run of the mill 20yr old I go to uni, work retail live in Canada . Even w my 2-3hr daily commute. I maybe get sub 20 minutes of sunlight. W fall and winter even less.

The weather apps UV index says we should wear sunscreen maybe 2-3x a week and only for a few hrs and in time periods when most ppl are indoorss(work, job, home resting).

And w my andectdol experience. When I seek sunlight for 15-30 mins a day to tan or something. Even though I don’t achieve tan, my skin looks significantly better and ironically lighter.

So I believe this sun is just unnecessary fear mongered. We are humans and supposed to get sunlight. And in modern living we are most likely deficient.

The stock market should be abolished

Its literally just a scam for rich people and businesses to make more money. And we are forced to invest in it for some reason just by working here. Somethings just not right about it. So many scams and fraudulent activities take place because it exists.

We should be changing the clocks MORE times per year in accordance with the sun. It is not difficult to adjust sleep 1 hour only twice per year, but it would be even easier if we did it more often.

People who complain about Daylight Savings Time don't actually care about getting more sunlight, or else they would agree that we should change the clocks more times per year to maximize sunlight hours. In fact, they are actually just upset each time they need to adjust 1 hour due to either a lack of flexibility and planning. Do you not go to bed or wake up early regularly? It's not an existential challenge, to wake up 1 hour earlier or sleep 1 hour later, but fairly easy for your body to adjust to if you are a well adjusted adult. If we did it more times per year, it would be even less of a change for your body.

In Alberta this year, we are not adjusting our clocks, so in the winter the sun wont rise until 9:30-10:00 am in most places. Do you really want to spend almost all of your morning in darkness? Just so you can "have some sunlight on the drive home"? We don't work in windowless boxes I hope.

For centuries before the ancient Romans invented the sundial humanity timed their days naturally with the sun. Since we decided to section the days into hours there has been the issue of the length of days changing throughout the year. Adjusting the clocks is the best thing we can do.

**- bunch of teenagers in the comments who must be so sleepy they forgot what sub theyre on. maybe the little babies missed an hour of sleep and are swooper cwanky :(

Room temperature brownies are better than warm/hot brownies

I like feeling each chocolate chip, when is warm or hot they are gooey and blend into the taste. Also if you’re eating it with ice cream then the ice cream melts much too fast on a warm or hot brownie. Anyone agree?

J-pop is better music than K-pop.

2.0k Upvotes

J-pop is more musically distinctive, creative, and unpredictable. Much of mainstream K-pop feels like a highly polished adaptation of American R&B, hip-hop, EDM, and contemporary pop, using predictable song structures, repetitive hooks, obligatory rap verses, and bass drops. Much of K-pop's identity seems rooted in its presentation, choreography, visuals, and production rather than the music itself. J-pop, on the other hand, tends to place greater emphasis on melodic complexity, interesting chord progressions, unconventional arrangements, and individual artistic expression. Of course, there are exceptions, but I find that J-pop rewards attentive listening, whereas mainstream K-pop seems increasingly designed for immediate commercial appeal. Global popularity doesn't necessarily reflect musical originality or quality, and I think J-pop has a stronger and more recognizable musical identity.

Work-life balance is often an excuse for for time management

I've been in management for a little over a decade. I'm in my mid-30s. It's amazing how many people who are even just a couple years younger than me, constantly say they need days off. I work at a place that is only open Monday through fridays. And we don't ever work past 3:00 p.m. No one works more than 8 hours a day. I've had several employees who keep using all their PTO and don't have any left for vacation because they say they need to focus on work life balance. And the more I hear them talk all I can think is, you just suffer from poor time management.

I totally get taken off for doctor's appointments, and stuff for your kids school, and things like that. But then once a month don't take off a random Friday because you're just so overwhelmed, and then tell me how bored you were on sunday. Just use your time more efficiently.

Edit: it's not about people using their pto. I'm all for it. You've earned it, you should absolutely use it. all I've noticed is it seems that younger people will take a day off after they burn through all their PTO as an unpaid day, to do some of that would only take 2 hours that could have been done after work or on the weekend. Then complaining about how missing a whole day of work has really affected their finances.

again, totally fine with people using pto. I highly support that. I take two one week vacations every year, and then I run through my extra week on random days for house projects.

The best way to network is to just do things you like and invite others to come along with you.

I've been to a handful of networking events. Bars, showcases, etc. Places where people show up in suits, give you a sweaty handshake and end with a 2-minute monologue about their job and a swapping of LinkedIn profiles.

I rarely remember those people or read those profiles, aside from maybe a cursory glance. This isn't to put myself on a pedestal. I'm a normal person like everyone else. I just don't have the investment to care about a guy who I briefly met at a networking event and will likely never see again. If they asked me months later for a referral or advice, my first question would be who this person is and how I know them.

The people who I actually care about are the people who are... you know... friends who I do stuff with in real life. I'm friends with many people in my industry, and we'll meet up from time to time for board game nights, sports, etc. Often I'll meet a new person and we'll chat and exchange contact info. That is a person that I would recommend for a job and vice versa.

I've had the most success in meeting people by being friendly with coworkers/ people in my industry and inviting them to events. Meet an interesting person at a bar? Invite them to my next friend group's meetup. Bam. That's a new friend and a new contact for myself and everyone in my friend group.

The best part is, you never need to waste time going to "networking" events. Just do things that you like to do with people that you like anyways, and let the relationships form naturally over time.

Entertaining football is more important than correct referee decisions

I would rather the referees make mistakes and some rules are broken as long as the football is entertaining

Now we have technology and it is ruining football and sports games

The life and passion is totally removed from it. It's become dreary to watch. Mechanical. Lifeless. All sponsorships and all technology. Totally miserable.

A team wins the championship because of bad decisions and a few mistakes? So what. That's life. And we still have referee mistakes WITH technology so it wouldn't matter anyway. someone was offside? maybe the ball crossed the line ,maybe it didn't, maybe a foul, maybe not. so what.

sports are not meant to be perfect, clinical, robotic and precise. that would make it boring. real life is about missed opportunities, mistakes and regret

The NFL's international approach is mistaken

The NFL aims to expand its market internationally. They've been playing more games overseas. They even teased possible international franchises. That's a natural progression, considering they're overwhelmingly dominant in the US. But I think their approach to international expansion is mistaken.

There's nothing wrong with playing a few overseas games each year. But an overseas franchise wouldn't do well. People don't care about American football out there, and some think it's stupid. A fair number of people show up to the international games because of the rarity. But 90,000 people also went to see Messi play in Alabama. I wouldn't take that as evidence that Alabama is a fertile soccer market.

There's not enough grassroots fanbases for consistent attendance of American football. They even had to cut prices for a recent London game so it would sell out.

Even if an overseas team was somehow sustainable, it'd make far less money than its US counterparts. Sports tickets are generally cheaper in other countries. Other countries also offer limited advertising/ commercialization opportunities. I don't think companies in other countries would be scrambling to pay huge sums for commercial partnership deals with NFL team, as the NFL isn't culturally influential out there.

It'd make more sense for the NFL to expand to other markets within the US/ Canada. If they want to make it somewhat of a global sport, they should help other countries create their own leagues so they can feel like it's their sport. You can't grow a sport overseas sustainably while keeping the sport US-controlled. It has to be the people's sport.

Help the countries that have a bit of interest create their own leagues. Let those leagues pay the NFL for technical assistance. Fans of those small leagues would also watch the NFL occasionally (just like how most MLS fans eventually pay some attention to the English Premier League). Every sports fan wants to watch the best league for their sport.

Science isn't dogma. It's okay to be denialist

Science only moves forward because people question what we currently believe to be true. Theories get revised, hypotheses get rejected, and things we once considered facts turn out to be incomplete or just plain wrong.

What I find kinda weird is how questioning something science says can get you labeled a science denier almost immediately. As if trusting science means accepting everything without thinking twice.

Isn't science literally built around questioning things, testing ideas, and correcting mistakes?

Now, I'm not saying every random opinion is as valid as decades of research, or that scientific consensus should be dismissed just because someone doesn't like it. There's obviously a difference between questioning something based on evidence and rejecting facts because they don't fit your worldview.

But that's exactly my point: trusting science doesn't mean treating our current understanding of the world as some kind of absolute, unquestionable truth.

Honestly, I find it a bit ironic when people use science as a way to shut down any discussion, as if there's nothing left to question. That almost turns scientific knowledge into a dogma, which is pretty much the opposite of what science is supposed to be.

To me, the problem isn't skepticism itself. It's how you approach it. Questioning things is part of the process. Rejecting evidence just because you don't like the answer is a completely different thing.

Maybe the title is a little too provocative, but I'm genuinely curious about what people here think.

Are we actually encouraging scientific thinking, or are we sometimes just teaching people to blindly accept whatever they believe science says?

Buying funds, stocks and financial instruments should not be called 'investing'.

'Investing' alludes to something that would benefit the real economy, like building a factory or developing a project.

Buying funds, stocks and financial instruments with the intent of cashing out a return through changes of the valuation of the asset does nothing to the real economy. It is more akin to gambling, which is the term that should be used.

People who say they are 'investing' in the stock market should be corrected to instead say they are gambling on the stock market.

English is not my first language, so excuse me for any mistakes regarding financial terminology.

PvP will die if you don't learn to hold back.

There's a real person, probably just as frustrated as you are, on the other side of that game. If there isn't, you should assume there is if you're playing a multiplayer game, especially if you KNOW that game wouldn't let you play without an internet connection. Not every opponent is playing to speedrun the fight, and if you play a competitive game you likely don't want to be on the receiving end of such a relentless pummeling. The game costs money to play. No one watches random people playing ranked matches to scout for Overwatch League or Rivals Ignite. Learn some goddamn etiquette, and realize that being a sore winner is just as rude as being a sore loser. Most people play to feel like they CAN do something, because we all know we have no power to do anything meaningful on a large scale irl.

Most fighting games are hyped and then die out really fast, mostly because they're bought with the intention of couch play, but casuals don't like eating TOD combos where they die before they can even recover once. Perfect wins are only impressive to those watching you play, not to the person playing online by themselves because they have nobody else to play with.

Tl;dr: Hardcore gamers aren't respected because they gatekeep their games from newbies who want to give them a try.

Edit: I'm not saying to hold back for the whole fight. I'm saying to apply pressure more slowly and not to try to beat your opponent to a pulp before they can even react.

Mozzarella is not the cheese for pizza

Overrated! I actually think it's not a good cheese for pizza. I like parmesan on mine. I don't like how mozzarella, even a good one just gets clumpy and gloopy and waxy and hard and I don't know, doesn't actually taste of anything at all? Maybe a mild milky-ness but that's about it, taste wise. It's more the pizza dough, the sauce, the toppings than the moz cheese you can taste. Do you know what I mean? I think actually something sharp like parmesan is the way to go for pizza but of course, you can't shower it on but then I don't think think pizza should have a layer of solidified cheese on top of it, it's really doing nothing! I don't believe there should be cheese pulls - they just make the cheese look plasticky to me.

German cockroaches are kinda cute

I agree that they’re pests. I agree that they’re unsanitary. I agree that seeing them strut about my kitchen counters makes me want to immolate myself, my apartment, and the rest of my block.

However, if they lived entirely outdoors and away from us? Their little antennae and dopey eyes would be so adorable 🥺 German cockroaches have the obvious advantage of being one of the smallest (and therefore cutest) species of roach, but even big species like the Oriental Cockroach can be cute lil dudes on a good day. Even bereft of physically cute features, I think it’s their (perceived) curiosity that endears them to me despite the ick.

My partner has called me “an unrepentant monster who must be stopped” for this take, and I get it.

Anyways, the building was fumigated today

Clothing resellers at thrift stores are not that bad.

Look, I get people wanting nice clothing, especially the expensive and extra nice stuff that occasionally gets donated and given to a thrift store just to be snagged by a reseller, washed, maybe lightly ironed or something, and then resold for a massive markup.

I work at a thrift store, and really particularly hate the resellers that swoop into every corner of the store when new items are added and pick through it (often quite aggressively which sucks).

But at the end of the day, donation-based thrift stores get a LOT of clothing. Like an unbelievable influx. If your thrift store has a donation dock where you get your car unloaded, then that location is going to be swimming in clothing guaranteed. My store actually compacts and ships about half their clothing received to humanitarian stuff regularly

You will not be deprived of clothing because resellers exist.

You may be deprived of the really nice stuff like vintage band shirts or name brand items, but there is still a lot there, and also dirt cheap (cause often the really nice stuff is priced a little higher anyways).

If you can afford to be that choosy about the clothing you are getting at the thrift store, then you might not be the target demographic for thrift stores anyways.

Maybe most of this opinion is unpopular because of my location being either better or worse than most, but the range for standard clothing (shirt and pants) we have on average is between $2 and $8, with most being the bottom end of that range.

If your relationship couldn't survive long distance then it's not worth pursuing in the first place

I saw a post from a girl who decided not to go to her dream college because her boyfriend said he couldn't handle long distance relationship and she just kept defending him in the comments. I find it hard to believe that someone can claim to love you deeply, see a future with you, and genuinely want to build a life with you, but then lose interest simply because you can't be physically together for a while. Isn't the whole point of being with someone that you value them for more than just their physical presence? If a few months apart are enough to make you question your feelings, lose interest, or look for someone more convenient, then maybe what you had wasn't as meaningful as you thought. Giving up your future for someone who's not willing to wait for you is in my opinion one of the dumbest things you can do.

Long, melting cheese is annoying

There is something genuinely annoying about cheese that refuses to break apart when you try to eat it. You take a bite of pizza, pull a slice away, and suddenly there is an endless strand of cheese connecting everything together. You pull harder, and it just keeps stretching instead of breaking. Sometimes you have to bite through it or awkwardly use your hands just to separate a piece of food. How is that supposed to be satisfying?

the worst part is that people seem to love this. Every time there is an advertisement for pizza or another cheesy meal, they showcase the cheese stretching for as long as physically possible, as if it is the most appetizing thing ever. The longer it stretches, the more impressive it supposedly looks. Personally, it just looks annoying to eat. Melted cheese is great, but there is a difference between enjoying cheesy food and having to fight a three-foot strand of cheese just to take a bite

'If that makes sense' is the stupidest saying that has gained popularity recently

My god it's so common now... If you had the brain power to explain something properly then you would know it makes sense. And who are you even saying it to? It's like when youtubers start a video with 'what's going on guys'. The last time I had someone say 'if that makes sense' was at my eye doctors and the twit working there was discussing my billing with insurance and I knew she was dead wrong. She explains (well, completely made up) how she has to get extra $ from me because insurance requires it if that makes any sense... I said no it does not make any sense. Grrrrrrrr. Of course I was right and she did it my way.

People that complain about electric cooktops, just suck at cooking

If you are an actual good cook, you should be able to cook on anything. In essence all cooktops are just heat sources and any so called cook/chef worth their salt should be able to regulate it to get what they want out of it. I also hate that people don't realize that induction tops are essentially electric as well.

Watermelon is the worst fruit

It tastes like garbage, has seeds and when I buy it I only eat half before the other half goes bad. I don’t understand the hype on watermelon. There are so many better fruits: apple, oranges, plums, peaches even pears and they kinda suck too.

Blowing out the candles on a cake is gross

Somebody blowing little spit particles onto the cake before we all have a slice is disgusting - almost ruins the cake. Even worse when they don’t blow out the candles first time round and have to double-down with another round. Good luck with those 85 candles Grandad. Don’t get me started on those joke candles that reignite.

Sales and marketing is inherently exploitative and the people working in those fields should feel bad

1.8k Upvotes

Edit to better articulate:

I get that they aren't physically causing harm but the methods used when directed at consumers at this point are teetering on the edge. Their primary goal is to manufacture demand, manipulate consumer psychology, and extract as much money as possible rather than meet genuine needs. The FTC found that nearly 76% of 642 websites and apps examined in a 2024 international review used at least one potential manipulative design tactic, with nearly 67% using multiple tactics, including hiding important information and steering consumers toward decisions that exclusively benefit businesses. When an industry routinely rewards exploiting psychological vulnerabilities, creating artificial urgency, and obscuring the true cost of products, its workers have a moral responsibility to question what they are helping normalize; earning a living does not automatically make the work ethical.

Furthermore, most people can extrapolate that what I'm referring to is the consumer facing side of these industries. You can understand why a fork manufacturer would need to sell to a distributor, that's not the side weaponizing information against the community. Whether it be long ad breaks for products you can't opt out of or are actively paying for the supposed privilege of avoiding or being upsold on additional coverages, warranties and credit cards you don't actually need these industries still leverage manipulative tactics to exploit their base.

DiGiorno is better than just about every major pizza delivery chain

Not trolling here.

Dominos and Papa Johns are just not very good. Pizza Hut certainly has a time and a place, but I'd default to DiGiorno over that.

Far from being the best pizza or even very good pizza, it's the most frequent pizza I have I'd say. The bar is just low as hell from the main delivery giants.

So do yourself a favor. Go to the gas station and buy yourself a DiGiorno pepperoni. Classic. Simple. Spend the $11 or whatever. Bake to your liking. Is that REALLY worse than the aforementioned delivery guys?

Football would be better if Crowd noise was regulated

The home team has a major advantage because their fans will be quiet when they are on offense and be deafeningly obnoxious when the opponent is on offense. Why not implement tennis like rules and let the truly skilled team win?

I think the Man City situation is overblown.

Couple points to make here.

A) As a football fan I believe you shouldn’t even be allowed to own a club in the first place, only run for presidency.
However if i can purchase a club, why the hell can’t I spend however much I want.

B) I think it s really ironic when fans ( e.g Liverpool) say Man City spending is insane as they then go on to spend £120m+ each on 3 players. Or United/chelsea/Arsenal spending huge amounts.
So what if Man City don’t generate the same funds as these clubs?
Using that as an excuse to say they ruined football I find a copout.
This would be a nonissue if Pep didn’t win them 6/7 prems.

C) The money in the Premiere League is outrageous compared to other European legaues.
We have players REJECTING huge European clubs to play lower half prem football just because of money.
These same clubs are complaining that Manchester City is ruining football.
In what universe are we living in where players are snubbing teams like Juventus, to play for Bournemouth.
