Metroid dread. I like zero mission, fusion is my favorite in the series, i hate dread. Hate the emmi detection and insta-kill, it excuses excessive punishment for small mistakes and poor difficulty balance by removing any punishment for a game over, respawning you a single room back if you ever die. I just do not like it
It had great animations, but that wasn't enough to get more than one full playthrough out of me. I got the game at launch, beat it once, grabbed any leftover pickups, then i have not played it since. Still can't believe one bossfight had what was basically flappy bird in it
I truly hated the frame perfect timing on them. Truly hate like I wish the creator of that idea bangs their pinky toe on every table and chair right after it heals enough to stop hurting.
The game was cool otherwise but I quit because of the emmi sections. I just couldn't deal with that. I hated the pressure it puts on me and the precise aiming and timing on a controller. It's a genre of games I have fun with when it's casual and that just wasn't it.
I keep meaning to play Metroid Dread, but it has been sitting in my cupboard collecting dust for years.
It's such a visually stunning game from what I've seen. But I come from the 90s gaming era where there weren't very many buttons to press and not such a steep learning curve. These new games and controllers seem so complicated!
It could be different for everyone but I think dread does a fairly good job and teaching the player its mechanics and player movements in a way that doesn’t overwhelm the player. Its got a nice learning curve. Obviously im not saying the game is always easy because of this, but i never found it to be unfair
Thanks! That is reassuring. "Never found it to be unfair" is exactly what I needed to hear.
I'm dating myself again by saying this, but: Super Metroid was very f***ing unfair and had weird physics. You could do crazy things in the game if you mastered it, but for us normies, you're more likely to end up slamming your controller and cursing the game over and over. I don't need that kind of stress in my life. LOL.
I feel i should mention, that just because i found it fair doesnt necessarily mean everyone else will. Everyone has a different difficulty tolerance.
Dread does have a number of challenging moments but, unless you did some sequence breaks, you should be given the right tools and abilities to succeed. It might take a bit of practice thats all. But when you start getting the hang of the movement and abilities… i gotta say it does feel goooood.
The parry gives you a fraction of a second to react and the timing was always inconsistent. I literally only managed to get the escape parry twice, including the tutorial instance, but i died to that damn instant death at least 30 times. And the emmi aren't easy to outrun when you don't know the map and have no idea where you're going.
You can definitely learn the parry timing. I get it consistently and i see speed runners purposely get caught to flex the parry timing skills. The emmi maps aren't that complicated so its fairly easy to learn the layout on the fly
There was NEVER any consistency in my playthrough. Regardless of which emmi unit, the time between getting grabbed, the flash, and the actual death hit you have to parry was different each time, it was basically RNG, maybe they nerfed that since i played it, but i got the game on launch and it was different every time between every death.
Like, one instance would be: (grab)--------(flash)-----(stab)
But if i got caught again it would be
(grab)----------------(flash)--(stab)
Some people just look at the movement in the background instead of looking at emmi. They aren't hard to dodge especially with the invisible power so the punishment of being sent back only 1 room seems reasonable
The fact that there's this much information going into avoiding an instant death hit is kinda the problem. It's an INSTANT DEATH HIT. It shouldn't be this complicated and precise on something you cannot survive failing, especially when you're on a first playthrough difficulty. And the punishment of being sent back a single room isn't a punishment at all, that's part of the problem. Respawning a single room back isn't even a slap on the wrist, there's basically no punishment there, making dying virtually inconsequential, and when dying is inconsequential suddenly cheap deaths are excusable
Exactly, there are SO MANY opportunities to dodge, outrun or lose an EMMI, and even if you do get hit you get two chances to escape that you can absolutely learn. I think the EMMI are fantastic game design and great obstacles.
First time i played the game my approach to the emmi sections was stealthy. Hiding from the emmis, staying completely still, going invisible all the time and only moving when i was absolutely in the clear. I never hated the emmis but i cant say i loved them either.
But when i played the second time, i changed the way i approached the emmis. I’d try to outmanoeuvre them by running and parkour. Not easy but the rush of adrenaline, the quick thinking required due to the fast gameplay made the emmi sections some of my favourite moments in the game.
Also the emmis are meant to give a sense of horror, hence the name “metroid dread”. They’re supposed to basically one shot you. But the parry mechanic is meant to be like a saving grace, or hail mary that gives you an extra chance, so it being very difficult to pull off was the intent
I don’t like dread because I didn’t like being chased by a hunter. I like exploring the map and finding the secrets. It ruined the pace of the game for me.
Same. Played every Metroid game prior, loved them. Dread just annoyed me.
I love being able to explore in the other games. In Dread, you have to do a mad dash after going through every other door to avoid the emmis. It just felt like it went against everything I liked in the other games
I got the game on launch, 100% a single save file, haven't touched it since. I tried to enjoy it but just could not. Most bosses were a pain in the ass, single hits taking huge chunks of your health even with some obnoxiously difficult to dodge attack, like one boss had an attack that turned things into flappy bird for a bit. They overused the parrying mechanic, though i hated that in samus returns as well, and the emmi were just broken, not only following you from room to room despite not detecting you, but they'd even stay in the same section of the room as you.
