Image / Video Fluid & Satisfying combat in Control Resonant

FOV is at 65 instead of default 100 to make it more cinematic, but it makes the game harder (harder to have enemy-awareness, hard to do very quick traversal movement etc). i still do think you should play at like 80 FOV or something compared to 100

If someone showed me this and said this is the sequel to control I’d tell them to gtfo.

i mean, if control 2 had the same shooting mechanics of control 1 it would be kinda boring, its actually a good thing that this time its a melee based hack'n'slash so that people who wanted variety can enjoy AND newer fans can join in too! from a story prespective it makes sense too, why would jesse's brother be good at shooting too? and jesse got the gun from the director so dylan wouldn't be able to use a gun anyways lol...

Yes, but you're looking at it from the perspective of knowing what Resonant was gonna be like. Back in the day I think everyone thought a sequel would be about Jesse, so similar gameplay to Control was expected.

yeah, i played control in like 2022, then saw the control 2 scene in alan wake 2 and was like "yay more jesse time!!" but then i saw it was a melee game and was like "whyyy i dont want another damn melee combat game" but eventually i started playing hacknslashers, soulslikes, etc and now really enjoy control resonant. it would be kinda lame if it was another 3rd person shooter now that i think about it because, basically every gun type was explored in control 1, the only thing control 2 would be different in was maybe adding more telekenesis moves and all but yeah.. thats my take on it

Soulslike and hack n slash are two pretty different styles and if anybody called bloodborne a hack n slash I’d probably think they meant another game

Sure, but some people may want more Jesse and more Jesse gameplay.

im sure after the max payne remake it will either be alan wake 3 or actually control 2

Jesse is a huge part of the game, you clearly haven’t played it

more Jesse gameplay

I haven't. I was simply providing a counterpoint to the comment that makes it sound as if it's wild anyone would have wanted Control 2 to play like Control 2.

also it would mean Dylan has the service weapon, and oh no

Exactly why I haven't picked this up yet. I really loved Control but this game looks so much different. More like a spin off and not a proper sequel. I just wanted more Control. Not whatever this is.

Having said that, I'm sure Resonant is great and I'll eventually play it but it's an easy wait for a sale instead of a day one purchase.

I mean it very much is more control. It’s just melee as opposed to ranged focused.

Everything else you loved about control is there.

The reception to comments like yours in cases like this is interesting.

The combat differences between the games is frequently commented as being pretty stark but when someone (in this case you) do not favor the changes, they are downplayed.

Alan Wake was like Max Payne injected with Silent Hill, while the sequel seemed to have no Max Payne DNA. It is only natural that the audience opinions shift.

Personally, I used a lot of the movement and close-range abilities in the original Control, so the combat in Resonant feels more like an evolution to me than a change in direction. Though, I can't say I don't sometimes feel myself reaching for a gun that isn't there after taking out a group close to me and seeing an enemy in the distance. I can see the gameplay seeming more different to someone who played the original more reservedly compared to someone who played aggressively like myself. Really just depends on your perspective. Some see Control as a shooter, some see it as an action game with a gun.

There's no arguing the tonal shift, though. Sort of like how AW2 shifted to slower-paced horror from the action thriller that was the first game, Resonant is more action-packed and whereas Control felt more like the game was giving you the space to solve each mystery one at a time, Resonant feels like it kind of throws everything at you at once.

I like it, personally, keeps things fresh and the change of pace feels apt for a seasoned player of the first game, but I understand those seeking familiarity.

yes! I always found the close up + movement to be the most fun way to play Control so it makes a lot of sense to evolve in that direction

can hardly wait to play this. very tempted to pay full price

I rarely buy games on release these days, preferring to wait for sales, and my backlog is large enough to hold me over while I wait, but this was a day one purchase for me and I do not regret it.

Yeah the difference between the two games is undeniable. It's not surprising that there's going to be some people that prefer Control to Resonant based on the gameplay shown. And it's not like I'm shitting on the game. It genuinely looks cool but it doesn't look like the original Control. If it did I'd be playing it right now.

I feel like the vibes are much the same, despite the change in tone and pacing, if that makes sense. I feel like there's a lot of overlap in the gameplay, too, at least in the movement and abilities, but if your play style in the original was slower and more distanced, you don't really have that option here. If you want more of the story and artsy scp vibes, I highly recommend, but if it's the pacing and gunplay of the original you enjoyed, then waiting for a sale isn't a bad idea.

Is Control a good game? Not trolling I just couldn't get past the intro wandering around a building and nothing happening

1

u/pjb1999 19d ago

I thought it was really good

IMO, it's fantastic -- Just don't go in expecting incredible combat.

It's got a mysterious / eerie feeling throughout, the exploration and powers are unique, and the characters (particularly the main character, Jesse) are very well done. I thoroughly enjoyed being weirded out by Control's strange government building that doesn't seem to play by standard rules of physics.

I stayed away from the game because the third-person shooter mechanics didn't interest me, but I tried it out after recomendations and a sale. Gun combat is not the main draw of the game, and the shooter mechanics hardly matter because the majority of your damage will come through powers that you develop throughout the game.

Ironically... the sequel's combat is even less appealing to me. That's all that the demos and trailers have been highlighting, and once again, I'll probably be waiting to pick this up on sale. Hopefully the characters, mood, and exploration make up for what looks like a pretty mindless hack-and-slash loop.

Because the combat is different?

3

u/pjb1999 19d ago

Mostly, yeah. This game seems much more like a semi open world action game compared to Control. But even beyond the combat the whole tone and vibe of this game is very different from Control from what I've seen. If Resonant didn't have Control in the title it would be hard to tell it's a sequel.

Like I said I'll definitely pick it up eventually but I'm in no rush based on everything I've seen so far.

u/MattMassier 19d ago

Same. I am sure it’s a very well made game and fun, but this looks completely different from everything I enjoyed about the first one.

As a fan of the original Control, and Alan Wake 2 + it’s DLC, I feel like they only called it Control because it’s the only other (recent) game that shares a universe with Alan Wake, and they needed a familiar story to tie them all together. Like what Aliens was to Alien. Though they are very different, they expand off each other perfectly

1

u/TinyTaters 19d ago

Yeah. Doesn't feel like control at all. Looks like some kind of DMC

3

u/CatchrFreeman 19d ago

Trust me when you actually play it's unmistakably control

1

u/Digital_Deebo 19d ago

FR Tho. LOL! It feels like a totally different game. If it wasnt for the name and seeing Jessie it could be a totally different franchise.

1

u/ExaminationLow4117 8d ago

Yo te diria que te largues tu si crees que tiene que ser de disparos igual que el 1. Asi que lárgate tu. Es exelente control resonance

0

u/Raikou239 19d ago

I agree lol

0

u/ken2144 19d ago

That's why this is Control Resonant, not Control 2

u/Tigerwarrior55 19d ago

I deadass thought the same. I don't really play control but saw a gameplay video and assumed control was going to be more of the same but more. Wasn't expecting that
