Image / Video Fluid & Satisfying combat in Control Resonant
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
FOV is at 65 instead of default 100 to make it more cinematic, but it makes the game harder (harder to have enemy-awareness, hard to do very quick traversal movement etc). i still do think you should play at like 80 FOV or something compared to 100

If someone showed me this and said this is the sequel to control I’d tell them to gtfo.

u/Novapierce_ 19d ago
i mean, if control 2 had the same shooting mechanics of control 1 it would be kinda boring, its actually a good thing that this time its a melee based hack'n'slash so that people who wanted variety can enjoy AND newer fans can join in too! from a story prespective it makes sense too, why would jesse's brother be good at shooting too? and jesse got the gun from the director so dylan wouldn't be able to use a gun anyways lol...
85
u/Endiaron 19d ago
Yes, but you're looking at it from the perspective of knowing what Resonant was gonna be like. Back in the day I think everyone thought a sequel would be about Jesse, so similar gameplay to Control was expected.

u/Novapierce_ 19d ago
yeah, i played control in like 2022, then saw the control 2 scene in alan wake 2 and was like "yay more jesse time!!" but then i saw it was a melee game and was like "whyyy i dont want another damn melee combat game" but eventually i started playing hacknslashers, soulslikes, etc and now really enjoy control resonant. it would be kinda lame if it was another 3rd person shooter now that i think about it because, basically every gun type was explored in control 1, the only thing control 2 would be different in was maybe adding more telekenesis moves and all but yeah.. thats my take on it

u/GooginTheBirdsFan 19d ago
Soulslike and hack n slash are two pretty different styles and if anybody called bloodborne a hack n slash I’d probably think they meant another game

Exactly why I haven't picked this up yet. I really loved Control but this game looks so much different. More like a spin off and not a proper sequel. I just wanted more Control. Not whatever this is.
Having said that, I'm sure Resonant is great and I'll eventually play it but it's an easy wait for a sale instead of a day one purchase.
25
u/Kronos9898 19d ago
I mean it very much is more control. It’s just melee as opposed to ranged focused.
Everything else you loved about control is there.

The reception to comments like yours in cases like this is interesting.
The combat differences between the games is frequently commented as being pretty stark but when someone (in this case you) do not favor the changes, they are downplayed.
Alan Wake was like Max Payne injected with Silent Hill, while the sequel seemed to have no Max Payne DNA. It is only natural that the audience opinions shift.

u/Yxanr 19d ago
Personally, I used a lot of the movement and close-range abilities in the original Control, so the combat in Resonant feels more like an evolution to me than a change in direction. Though, I can't say I don't sometimes feel myself reaching for a gun that isn't there after taking out a group close to me and seeing an enemy in the distance. I can see the gameplay seeming more different to someone who played the original more reservedly compared to someone who played aggressively like myself. Really just depends on your perspective. Some see Control as a shooter, some see it as an action game with a gun.
There's no arguing the tonal shift, though. Sort of like how AW2 shifted to slower-paced horror from the action thriller that was the first game, Resonant is more action-packed and whereas Control felt more like the game was giving you the space to solve each mystery one at a time, Resonant feels like it kind of throws everything at you at once.
I like it, personally, keeps things fresh and the change of pace feels apt for a seasoned player of the first game, but I understand those seeking familiarity.

Welcome back DmC - Devil May Cry
35
u/cconnorss 19d ago
I have been championing DmC, that specific one-off with the heaven and hell fighting system, since its inception!
There are complaints about the story and character design. Fuck all that. That game played ✨Wonderfully✨. Its emo-anime-esqué style was fun with some real life political commentary sprinkled in. Loved it and was hoping to continue the path.
I ain’t mad at DMCV at all! Love the return to form. But that combat system was nothing to write off.

u/dickcheese_on_rye 19d ago
I don’t think anyone criticized the combat of DmC. It plays great. Once you get used to the trigger switching abilities it’s combo heaven.
But it brutalized the characters and story of the series so, so, SO badly that they really should have just made a new IP instead.

u/13thsword 19d ago
People keep saying the combat is the weakest part of the game and they may be right but it's because every aspect of this game is damn near perfect not because the combat is bad
55
u/Quanathan_Chi 19d ago
Hitting things with a stick feels good and it's kept me entertained for the 20 or so hours I've gotten out of it so far (haven't finished the story but it's been great so far)

u/13thsword 19d ago
Yeah I'm about 20 hours in as well and just found a combo of abilities and weapons I like and somehow it's even better than before

I've been mostly running Glaive and Hammer but I recently switched my secondary to the Whip and that thing feels awesome once you get the timing down.

u/LnktheWolf 19d ago
Started with glaive hammer, went to glaive whip, but I decided I wanted to try strike out and holy shit I might be converted.
Strike for the fast paced crits, ship for a little AOE, fists (cant remember the name atm) for more stun is a fantastic combo.
12
u/Kanehammer 19d ago
I mean combat wise it's basically nier automata with executions
4
u/13thsword 19d ago
Can't complain about that honestly sometimes a hack and slash is exactly what I want

u/Hanzimer 19d ago
I still don't understand how some people can say at the same time, this a great game but the combat system si boring and repetitive.
We are speaking about an ACTION GAME based on fights.

u/Zangetsu2407 19d ago
Not that case for me. I love the combat. Honestly after the number of games that have become parry fest which is a playstyle I loath. I am happy just to have an action combat game.
So far I have geled with the combat much more than the other two games I have tried and bounced off this month
2
u/13thsword 19d ago
I'm saying the combat is amazing but in a game that's full of amazing even the "worst" part of it is still better than most games

Does the game have any TK abilities like the first? I really enjoyed using environmental elements in combat.
14
u/Novapierce_ 19d ago
obviously yeah, and wayy more. theres introduction of elemental abilities and wierd quirky ones like summons and stuff too. its way more complex than the 1st one

u/AlwaysTouchingGrass 19d ago
As far as I've played, not to the same degree as Control 1. Like most of your abilities will tear apart the environment, but its mostly visual compared to how it was in the first game, if that makes sense. So like yes, there are a ton of TK abilities, but they don't feel as organic.
I have no idea if that makes sense lmao, I'm so sorry
4
u/Ethifury 19d ago
I disagree with that. I don’t know how far you are into the game but the TK abilities are just as present as Jesse. And I wouldn’t say they are “purely visual”. Towards the end of the game (where Im at currently), everything feels organic. I can’t talk about some of his wackier abilities since I don’t want to spoil the experience for anyone. Since Dylan is the stronger parautilitarian, it makes sense his powers are more expressive and doesn’t revolve around the service gun since that’s contingent upon being The Director.
6
u/sticknotstick 19d ago
I’ve almost beat the game but he’s right. In Control 1 you are actively selecting parts of the environment to throw and they have different explosion/impact depending on what’s thrown, in Resonant you’re summoning debris that all functions the same and is often just concrete rubble.
That’s not a knock on Resonant, the faster-paced hack and slash gameplay focus demands that the TK abilities be less interactive - but they still are, compared to the first game.

u/Candaphlaf10 19d ago
I will say the gameplay and combat is very different from the first game, and the main menu has a recap video to refresh you on Control's story. It's not the same as experiencing the story naturally in my opinion, but you won't be left in the dark if you start Resonant before finishing the previous game.

Just low on funds. I’ve made my “fun” purchases for a couple months. Had to replace my busted headphones and I needed (read: really, really wanted) the translucent green Xbox anniversary controller. u/Thorrison 19d ago
The weapon switching is a mod. The actual game doesn’t have that, so it doesn’t actually look like this.
21
u/Illustrious_Luck9584 19d ago
There is no weapon switching in the video, its just cutting to different clips with different loadouts and using abilities like the slam as transitions between them.
8
u/Promature 19d ago
The video appears to be spliced together from multiple video clips with different builds.

u/kuenjato 19d ago
Hopefully they will patch it in, it’s the one drawback to an otherwise fun system.
4
u/Candaphlaf10 19d ago
Yeah, a game with this many options needs a loadout system. They already have two sets of three ability slots you can swap, and the D-Pad doesn't have any mapped functions so they could make it the loadout button.
16
u/Peachbottom30 19d ago
It’s not for me.

u/unseriously_serious 19d ago
Same, this is interesting and fair enough that they wanted to experiment and take the series in a different direction but it doesn’t appeal to me like the first one which I loved.

i've got 40 hours in the first game and somehow never realised weapons could swap mid-fight. i just threw office furniture at people until they stopped moving.
3
u/Illustrious_Luck9584 19d ago
To be fair, chucking rocks at people was the most fun part of Control's combat loop. Shooting the gun wound up being a way to pass the time as you rebuild energy to keep throwing stuff.

Character maneuvering is so satisfying. I wish we could have damage to environment in this game.
4
u/Novapierce_ 19d ago
remedy probably wanted to do that but that would make it unoptimized as hell, in control 1 tho it was in a indoor environment so they could do crazy destruction
i mean in this one too you can do lots of dmg to the environment (concrete blocks, those construction wooden boards, post boxes, lamps, cars, trash cans) almost all the small objects and medium-ish objects are destructible so im ok with that

5
u/StrangeLingonberry30 19d ago
I'm still on the fence with this game. It's something about the combat that just doesn't look right to me. I think it's the constant slowdowns with most hits and slow wind up of some attacks. But I will give it a go and see how it feels. It might end up feeling satisfying to play.
5
u/pampoentert 19d ago
I was on the fence because I loved the ranged combat of the original, but this game is really good. Remedy knows how to weave a compelling story and excellent gameplay together.

I’m playing on a base PS5, and yeah it’s really smooth. Even when there’s a LOT going on screen. Oddly, the only time I had any frame drops is when there was nothing going on, just turning the camera while walking around. But it’s only happened like twice in the 20+ hours I’ve played so far.
