Image / Video The Finals now has even better destruction (even though it was already insane before)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
this game keeps on getting updates for free even though the player counts are in the mid 20,000s which is kinda bad....
this game has so much more than what is shown in this video, literally watch any video documentary on this game and they will say its like the combination of every good system from other FPS games combined into 1

u/kapitankrunch 12d ago
I feel like we should adjust player count expectations. 20k players is not "kinda bad"
50
u/menofthesea 12d ago
It's also "just 20k+" on Steam. There is easily that same amount or more on consoles at a given moment. 40k daily peak concurrent is nothing to sneeze at.

Player number discourse has ruined gaming discussions I swear
9
u/RGisOnlineis16 11d ago
I swear some gamers are slowly becoming stock investors because why does the number have to be high for you to want to play the game if it looks fun? Just because the game is "dead" doesn't mean you can't have fun in the game
3
u/ZealousidealGuide854 8d ago
Tbf, playercount IS important in a multiplayer game. I find that the lower it gets, the less 'quality' matches you have especially for a global game. Even if the game is fun, you can't really experience that fun if the playercount is too low.

u/Adject_Ive 12d ago
Plus, despite the player count it's been a very profitable title, considering Nexon hasn't shut this down yet and still let's Embark work on it.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Hamerine 11d ago
One of Embark’s founders is now a chairman of Nexon, this might help a bit
4
u/Adject_Ive 11d ago
Oh well that certainly explains things lol. The finals is unlike anything that Nexon's put out, the cashgrab p2w gacha games.
3
u/Hamerine 11d ago
Yeah well, they let them express fully before the role at Nexon anyway.
The Finals might even be the most consumer friendly F2P I ever played, and I played a LOT of games.
5
u/69ANIME69 11d ago
I agree. I think in a way it's even a bit too friendly and fair in a way.
The new weekly challenges are relatively easy and most come just by playing the game. There's no time limit to them besides the end of the season. Battle pass is easy to complete at least for the part which gives out in-game currency. Equipment unlocks at a swift pace and there's no need to level them up to make anything stronger.
The modern gamer is used to the constant grind and looking forward to the next prize they get by grinding. The Finals is lacking in that department. I'm definitely not complaining. Just comparing it to other f2p and even paid games.
4
u/69ANIME69 12d ago
They're also thinking about the highest hourly concurrent players on steam which means there must be over 100k daily players across all platforms.

20k players for a game that's been out for years is fantastic. Only the likes of CS and valorant get better player counts because they're popular.

does it have any single player story? I hate online pvp and I assume this is entirely that from ads. but maybe they added something like fortnite did lol
2
u/Ianofminnesota 11d ago
Not when I played it, but another commenter mentioned they have pve now in some form.
8
u/MattRecovery23 11d ago
There still isn't a true single player story at all. They recently added a "bot match" game mode where you play against bots, but it's not a story mode at all
8
u/Vangad 12d ago
They came out with PvE if you ever just want to play without the sweat
6
3
u/TheNonCredibleHulk 12d ago
....and now I'm back in. I had it day one and did pretty well, but after a month I couldn't buy a win and was bringing whatever team got saddled with me down.
4
u/Angani_Giza 11d ago
I'm unbelievably bad at aiming on controller or mouse, even in games like Destiny that had a lot of aim assist I would struggle to track basic strafing and miss headshots with snipers on stationary targets. Part of the reason I love the finals is that I can use melee weapons and still get good results with them. Even the ones that are seen as the worst currently (spear, my main) is still perfectly serviceable and I have a blast just getting up in there and stabbing my way through.
3
u/Efficient_Amount557 11d ago
Sword guys are the absolute bane of my fucking existence
3
u/Angani_Giza 11d ago
I *know* it's a skill issue, there's ways to fight them and they fall over to only a bit of damage and I can definitely win as a spear heavy but that doesn't stop me from being bad at dealing with them.
2
u/leberwrust 12d ago

Finally game that does something with destructible enviroment! Red Faction did it perfectly and it sucks that many other games don't do it.
29
u/Oraxy51 12d ago
I want destructible environments with Titan fall movement. Like let me blow up a wall and wall run on that chunk and swing off a crumbling piece.
9
u/ChimericMelody 12d ago
Check out Severed Steel. It's a single player movement shooter where doing movement makes you invincible and lets you slow down time a la super hot. The destruction mechanics are lighter since it doesn't really have crumble physics or anything, but you can blow a hole in any wall or floor, chain wall jumps, slides, dive, and so on.
→ More replies (3)3
u/JerMuffinBear 11d ago
The light class in this game gives you some of that :D Grapple hook, speedier and more fluid movement, and all that. Not the same of course, but worth giving a try

I remember playing those games and thinking, “Man, what will this be like in a decade?” Now we’re past that point, and almost all games have gone in the opposite direction when it comes to physics. They’re more static than they were back then.
The amount of talent that has been lost must be massive.
5
u/NoireResteem 11d ago
It was the push for more realism and better graphics. I remember thinking games like BFBC2 or even Half Life 2 were the future but the industry at large basically showed the middle finger in improving the "tech" behind games and ended up pushing "look how pretty my game is". Obviously we still have games that push the tech side of things but they are dime a dozen and basically focus on a specific niche in this regard. We definitely regressed
2
u/strife189 11d ago
Agree “static” was my nice summary of be lazy and use UE which is all about pretty and nothing of real substance. We get lucky with some outliers but that use to be the expected not the outlier.

This is the type of advancement in game tech that I want to see more of. I miss destructible environments and after the Xbox360 era, they just fell off.
14
u/Karshipoo 11d ago
I remember DICE talking about adding this type of destruction to BFV, but it never happened among other features they talked up about like drag reviving.
Old DICE was essentially software engineers making video games on the side.
3
u/Faith_Citadel 11d ago
And now much of old DICE founded Embark and is now doing crazy destruction tech like this!
As well as trying to share some of their other creations opensource through “embark.dev”

I highly recommend it!
5
u/MattRecovery23 11d ago
Really really good in my opinion. It can be a little daunting at first because there are A LOT of weapon and gadget choices, but it's a lot of fun (and free)
4
u/duggyfresh88 11d ago
It’s pretty good. But contrary to what u/angani_giza says, it’s the opposite for me. I’m usually average to pretty good at fps games, and I am absolutely terrible at the finals.
I gave it an extended chance, I played for around a month when it first came out. And I just couldn’t get the hang of it personally→ More replies (1)2
u/steeze206 10d ago
It's a very unique shooter. There's a lot more to it than winning gunfights. You can definitely outsmart opponents to make up for skill gaps and such.
One of my favorites in recent memory.
2
u/TheOneDiversity 11d ago
Very good. Steep learning curve. But it's free to play so give it a shot. Stick with it and it will turn out to be one of your favorite multiplayer shooters.
2
u/Angani_Giza 11d ago
I really really love it. I'm generally pretty bad at fps games as a whole, struggle a lot to even do basic aim tracking or hit heads on stationary targets. Finals gives me ways to work around that~ Melee weapons like my beloved spear, tools to manipulate and control the environment. The destruction keeps things interesting on top of all that too, from opening up your own path to an objective or a kill to making terrain harder for your enemies or killing them by taking their floor out over a void, to moving the objectives via creation and destruction.
Destiny 2 is what got me into fps games as a whole and pvp with them, but the finals really shines with it and I love it. Fun alone (for me), a blast with friends

This looks insane with the deformation. But like, how does one shotgun shot take out a bridge between buildings lol
42
u/SalesTaxx 12d ago
That gun specifically does increased environmental destruction, and even then it takes several shots to destroy a piece of a building. Most other weapons aren’t like that
11
u/Own_Progress_9375 12d ago
They already did a ton of damage to it before taking the shot, and that weapon, the ks-23, has great environmental damage.
7
u/Novapierce_ 12d ago edited 12d ago
It's a K23 shotgun which is meant to do that, it's a slug shot shotgun or something that is extremely powerful, other guns can't do the same as the KS23

u/CleverKhloe13 11d ago
The game is (from a lore point of view) a game inside itself.
That's why there are announcers and the sort. It's like being in some form of the Matrix.
Because of this stuff like that is not realistic on purpose.
Also, like others pointed out, this shotgun is has one of it's main selling points that it does a lot of damage to the environment.

I’m really surprised this game isn’t as popular I think it’s really good and even better than launch. Hopefully more players come to the game after this update I think it could go far.
26
u/ChimericMelody 12d ago edited 12d ago
It's really sweaty, so even if it looks cool, not a ton of casual players stick around. The matchmaking can feel bad if you aren't very skilled, and the player pool is smaller at the bottom.
The Finals has great bones, but a lot of friction. There is a very high skill ceiling, and if you're just getting into it, there is a lot to learn.
4
u/spunkyweazle 12d ago
But it's not impossible. I only started in December in S9 and stuck mainly to Point Break while learning the ins and outs of the game. Here I am 10 months later and still having a blast (and getting bodied but I also do the bodying some times). More players will only make the game less sweaty, honestly
7
u/Working_Bones 12d ago
There's SBMM in all modes. Strongest in Quick Cash and Cashout.
3
u/claudekennilol 12d ago
SBMM?
5
u/Working_Bones 12d ago
Skill Based Matchmaking. So there's no need to worry about it being 'sweaty' if you're low skill. You'll be matched against other low skill players. It'll still feel challenging, every player being as good as you are. But it could be a lot worse, without SBMM. Might take a handful of matches for the system to figure out where you 'belong.'
There are also 'smurfs' (good players who make fresh accounts to dominate low skill lobbies) to worry about. But most people don't do that.
5
u/ChimericMelody 12d ago
The issue is that there aren't enough players for the matchmaking to do it's job. The amount of low skill players is proportionally small. The game has players for sure, but I felt as if the average skill of the game was a lot higher than other online games. The bottom rung is a bit bare so you'll more often than not be up against level 100+ players with way more hours in the game.
→ More replies (1)2
u/MattRecovery23 11d ago
I honestly don't think it's as sweaty as people think it is. I play on Xbox basically every day and I'm all right at the game, certainly not cracked or anything, and I hold my own just fine and have a lot of fun. The biggest barrier for new players in my opinion is the huge range of weapons/classes/gadgets/specializations to choose from. Going in blind and on game 1 having dozens and dozens of options is kind of daunting and makes "getting good" take a while because you have to figure out what everything does and then how it all works together with other things. But that's also part of what makes the game fun! There's certainly always meta picks but you can totally run off meta weapons and gadgets and still be able to contribute
3
u/Hunlor- 10d ago
Game is insufferable, it had long tense and engaging fights back at launch for a whole week and a half before people found out nukes, after that devs patched out all the fun out of Heavy and Medium whilst buffing the insufferable light class. I got 300 hours and i genuinely can't wait for this game to die

I don't know exactly why, but I try it almost every season, play a couple of games, then simply stop playing it. I didn't realise it's gotten so big. Must've been around 20 gigs when the game was released? I remember checking a while back and it was 54 gigs. I wonder if they have any plans to deal with the bloated size?
Unless you have limited internet connection or not enough free space, I don't think the size should be a problem?

u/ShadowJerry 12d ago
It's a pure competitive PvP shooter. The "main" game mode is pretty unique. You and your team unlock a box full of money, then you need to physically take it to a station to deposit it and get your money. This takes a couple of minutes, and other teams can steal the money.
So you are either playing defense, or your team is trying to steal another team's cash and keep it for yourselves.
There are 4 teams in a lobby, so often there are times where multiple teams are all fighting for the same objective. Add in all the fun gadgets, some melee weapons, plus the 100% full building destruction, and you get a lot of chaos.
2
u/Tenebrae42 8d ago
This post is a couple days old so this probably won't be seen, and I stopped playing The Finals some time ago, but I do have this clip, and I feel it shows that the person I am replying to is trying to convey.
For whatever reason, I am sufficiently more ass at The Finals compared to other shooters. But the game allows you to use your gadgets and the environment for some more creative approaches.
Sitting on a cashout for 4 minutes just to get pounced by two teams at the last 60 seconds and be knocked from 1st to 3rd and get eliminated does suck. And Lights are terrible to deal with. But it can be a fun game. It's free, so all you have to lose is time.

i think it doesn’t have the “addicting” factor for a lot of people like mobas have.
I dont know what that factor is, but if i were to make an entirely random guess, it would be laning phases, trading, and having more control over depletion of resources and other stuff. there’s always another chance.
unlike in this game where if you’re in a gunfight, you have to commit to shooting or running. very little chances to make the right decisions and it is unforgiving. make the wrong decision and you receive a quick death
and it also has a high skill floor and a pretty unique main game mode
unlike overwatch that imo has a relatively low skill floor where you can provide value just by holding w and shooting people. the objective is something you don’t think to actively think about.
in the finals, the objective is the main point of the game and is strategized around. you cant have a “chill” match and win without caring too much, you need your focus fully in the game

This is the level of destruction I want in Battlefield or at least in a more grounded FPS that isn't about zooming across the map at break neck speed. Basically Bad Company 2...tbh. Like BF6 is fun but the destruction is very intentionally placed and/or lacking.

i got a 1 month ban during a 1 week playtest
pretty funny times
3
u/Faith_Citadel 11d ago
Lol thats pretty lame to get banned for especially if it wasnt ranked.
There are modes now that give you way more freedom to just do what you want, like Point Break. Still obj based but its 8v8 and people are just playing and trying to cause chaos. Leveling the map is a somewhat common tactic in it lol. Least toxic mode
2
u/FlukeylukeGB 11d ago

u/justWata 11d ago
This game is amazing and should get more credit, only reason why I don’t play it is that it’s more competitive than BF.
Now if we had The Finals devs at EA/BF Studios that would be dope af.
3
u/Faith_Citadel 10d ago
Funny thing is, in 2018 multiple developers at DICE left EA and actually were the ones who founded Embark Studios, creator of The Finals and all the destruction tech you see here.
Including veteran members of DICE before they were even acquired by EA, such as Patrick Söderlund, former CEO of DICE.
After having already created many many Battlefield games, they wanted to see what games they were capable of making when “unconstrained”. And so far the result of that is The Finals and Arc Raiders.
EA seemingly pushed down the ambitions that DICE had, and it pushed many of the devs to go do what they wanted on their own terms. So sadly I don’t think the devs are interested in returning to BF, or making a similar military FPS at all.
As a big BF fan I wish the game had physics based destruction, but in the end it would probably be too much for 64+ player gamemodes on such large high-fidelity maps. Would be super demanding on hardware.

u/KoW-Production 12d ago

The problem with the finals is the gameplay loop being not that satisfying, with other fps the best feeling is outplay/being smarter than your opponent, but in the finals it can feel like you just third party and steal at the last moment so it feels insanely cheap, or you sit for years at a box just to get double teamed at the last moment and get the cashout stolen, both instances feel bad

I played it a ton when it launched and when I was back after a few months, the game was essentially dead for my region.
I really wanna play the game but don't wanna wait for like 10 mins for a match.

If I was even remotely okay at shooters, I would totally play The Finals. Unfortunately, I am not, and trying to play the game is complete suffering for me. I cannot get a single kill at all and just get obliterated from some area I can't see.

Not sure it this helps at all, but they recently added a "VS Bots" mode which could help you practice.

I would LOVE to see these types of technologies used in a real game with a story

This is such a great fucking game, it's the first time I've been hooked on an FPS since TF2 was at its peak.

I would play this game if it wasnt so chaotic. I love the destructable buildings and the gun play but its just too fast and crazy for me.

It's crazy that we can't get these quality destruction mechanics in our single player games and here they are doing it in a multiplayer game.

it works better in a online game cuz the physics are calculated on the servers instead of the players CPU

Saw a post on twitter saying that this level of destruction is wasted on a battle royal…and I’m like what are you on about. Just shows how criminally underrated this games is.

I wish I was a teen with the skills I once had. Looks so damn fun but I'm getting too old for this stuff. 😭

Comes out on Oct 20th. This is just one aspect of all the new things they are doing for the new season. But its definitely the part im most excited for.

Oh wow thats a long time, i wish i could be experiencing this game like that again after all these changes. If you try it again hope you have fun!
If you aren’t a mainly competitive/ranked focused player, make sure you try out some other modes than the traditional Cashout mode. Like “Point Break”, thats like all I play anymore.

Reminds me of Bad Company 2 but upgraded might give The Finals a look now.

I came to comment without seeing that everyone was saying the same thing…. Yes this is how BC2 felt so many years ago

Honestly even engineering wise this is super advanced. The amount of physics and compute required to model this is insaaaane.

Is everything made of paper mache? The fuck is a shot gun taking down a walkway?

It's a specific heavy weapon designed for environmental damage and it's likely they had weakened it already to have a smaller clip to show. Most weapons will take a lot more effort, especially if not on heavy.

Just a reminder that these are ex DICE devs that worked on Bad Company 2
