Anthropic named Claude after Claude Shannon. Probably one of the smartest people to ever live. His masters thesis invented the field of information theory.
His master thesis[often claimed as the most important master thesis in history] was about using boolean algebra with transistors, essentially creating digital circuits and digital computing.
The papers about information theory, artificial intelligence and communication would come later on.
To add to your correction, he wrote about it using relays and switches because it was 10+ years before transistors were invented, but the digital logic applies the same. You just get like 1000x the speed going from relays to vacuum tubes and another 1000x going to transistors on chips, and I’m not sure how much more reliable they get but probably similar improvements in reliability over time. The problem with vacuum tubes isn’t so much damage caused by switching but by turning off and on the heating filament.
