Question Why isn’t class canceled due to unsafe air quality?

Basically the title: the air quality in waterloo is hazardous and classes are still on

i mean one time back when i was in school i was waiting for the bus and some moron in a car hit a big puddle and i got soaked. that was it for me that day. i went home and didnt go back out.

For any asthmatics reading this that may not know, a mask probably isn't enough to go outside safely today. I was in California during the 2018 wildfires. I wasn't near the fires but the air quality index (AQI) in my area at the time was about 180. I went out for less than an hour masked to get groceries, but it had such a bad effect on me that I had to use a nebulizer 3-4 times a day for almost 4 months to recover. The AQI in Toronto today is 155, maybe your asthma is less severe than mine, just be aware of how well you're breathing and please be careful.

Most people who live locally have to walk at least part way to get to class. It's dangerous to spend much time outside in this air quality.

The 10 minute walk isn’t gonna kill you. Otherwise, take public transit.

it will literally shave years off your life. I know forward thinking is hard in this day and age

It “literally” will not.

At most a couple hours

Depends how long you stay outside. 10 min walk, sure I exaggerated the health effect, but someone working 8 hours outside today? Rough.

But we’re talking about 10 minutes. I completely agree that people should not be spending many hours outside in these conditions, but that’s not what I said.

No, you’re still exaggerating. In the coming years as people die who experienced this weather it will be like your decision to drink a bottle of wine in January in terms of the overall effect on your health.

Not even remotely similar. A bottle of wine is probably net neutral on your health if it is occasional. Standing outside breathing in air is equivalent to smoking cigarettes. For non smokers there would absolutely be chronic health effects as a result.

Standing outside for 8 hours is equivalent to smoking 1 cigarette.

Smoker or non smoker - you don’t get chronic health effects from 1 smoke lmao

Brother if you stood outside working in it for a month straight it would be roughly equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes over the course of a month. Unhealthy ? Sure, chronic health effects ? Absolutely not.

They have just shift to virtual class but it isn’t canceled or anything. You’d still have to attend the lectures on zoom

Will the air be better in your house than the classroom?

In my last year I didn't even go to classes at all and still graduated. I only showed up for exams.

Class isnt held outside.

you'll be okay walking outside. wear a mask and drink water, as long as you aren't literally sitting outside for hours you will be fine.

How does going to class or not effect the air quality ?
