Question How do you actually make friends at Laurier?

I’m starting my first year at Laurier and I’m honestly pretty extremely shy/introverted, so I’m kind of nervous
about making friends.

I keep hearing people say “just go to frosh, orientation, Homecoming, clubs, etc.” and I definitely want to try those things, but I’m wondering… what do you actually do when you’re there?. Like, do you literally just walk up to a random person and start talking to them? How do you turn that into actually becoming friends?

I’m also wondering if it’s normal to try making friends online beforehand. If anyone else is also starting first year and looking for people to talk to/hang out with, feel free to DM me on Reddit! I’d be down to meet some new people and hopefully make some friends.

Basically, if you’re also awkward/shy and don’t really know what you’re doing, you’re definitely not alone 😂

Question I have no idea what to do, what should I do

Hello fellow losers of Laurier, I lowk suck at making friends without a group and I have no idea what there is to do around here. My question is, what is there to do for an Autistic man at the age of 18 with strange social skills

Question Is the alternative/emo scene at Laurier pretty accepting?

Hey, I’m a 19M first-year student at Laurier and I’ve been kinda nervous about dressing more alternative/emo on campus. I wore my spiky boots out once before and, honestly, I got bullied/made fun of by a group of girls because of them 💀. Ever since then I’ve been a little hesitant to actually dress the way I want.

I’ve noticed there are definitely some alternative/goth/emo-looking people around Laurier, but I haven’t actually met any yet. I’m also extremely shy, so even when I see someone who looks like they’re into the same stuff, I never know how to walk up and talk to them without making it awkward 😭.

For anyone who’s alternative/emo/goth at Laurier (or just knows the scene), how have people generally reacted to you? And are there any clubs, events, or places around campus/Waterloo where people with that kind of style tend to hang out? I’d honestly just like to meet some people I can be myself around.

Question Are there any professors that aren't overtly left leaning, maybe even right leaning?

Before it gets "controversial", I am not a right winger. I've just noticed that a lot of the professors are preachy about their politics and they seem to skew their teaching to match that, almost cherry picking things. I'm taking a course over the summer and one of the main portions is "social justice", and it just feels like I'm paying all this money to scroll through Tumblr in 2012.

I don't want to be told what to think or how I should feel about things. I want to learn. I notice it seems like a lot of professors are trying to push their own narrative in classes when they can.

Unfortunately it seems that most of psych/crim professors are this way, even the philosophy professors which is really disappointing. So I'm curious if there are any right leaning professors/classes, or just plain neutral "here is this side, here is that side, come to your conclusion" type of professors/classes that I could take for a change in scenery.

Question Is Brantford Campus safe?

I am an international student from South Asia with not a lot of options in my hand and I was planning on applying for Brantford campus and I see reviews online about how unsafe it is and I wanted to make sure if that’s actually the case. Is it possible for me to stay in a place where there is no issue of homeless people and substance abuse or is that everywhere in brantford? will I have to always worry about feeling unsafe?

Question Does it get better + Imposter syndrome

Pretty much the title. Also im writing this at 1 am so ignore any grammatical errors and stuff.

But yeah, a month in and things are just going mid at best. Idk if i set my expectations too high in highschool about university and uni life or if its just the overall experiance that im feeling right now.

First of all, the social aspect of it. I really haven't made any friends (except that one dude in my math class, so shoutout to him hes chill) but yeah, i've been mostly hanging out with 2 of my highschool friends that i've known since grade 9 but other than that I really havent made any 'friends'. I have small talk in class/labs, exchange instas but thats it. Things go nowhere after that. Im also not the MOST outgoing, but I can say "hey whats your name, nice to meet you, etc etc" and hold a conversation somewhat well. I haven't been this alone since the first week of 5th grade tbh, I've always loved hanging with friends/people, I like being social in a setting where i know people and whatnot but this is a big shift.

And i know people are gonna be like "go to clubs and events" but the problem is, that i commute (its not a long commute, its like 30-40 mins cuz i live in kw and i take the public transit) and also because most of the meetings are at 8/9/10pm so its hard for me to attend stuff while also balancing my school work, personal commitments and a part time job. so thats that.

Also, I haven't been able to enjoy a lot of personal stuff. Ex: video games, sports, gym, etc. Its always like I have something in the back of my mind regarding school work so I can't really enjoy things im doing because of that guilt that I gotta be studying/being productive. So drifting away from the things I like doing is kinda making my life mundane/'lonely"

And this is the big one, I've started reflecting and I realized that I have imposter syndrome/I compare myself a lot to others. "Don't compare yourself to others" -- this is easier said than done especially when your not being bombarded stuff other people are doing. Like I sort of had it in highschool but like it wasn't as bad/a big deal. And feel like being a first year AND in BBA only adds salt to the wound. Like I see people getting into exec/director roles in lazsoc, winning case comps, having more experiance, etc etc. I could go on and on... I also applied to lazsoc club roles(director & FYR) and ended up getting ghosted by 6 clubs, got an interview for 1, but got ghosted right after. Not even a rejection email smh. but its wtv.

But whatever, I digress, ig clubs aren't be all end all

Thats pretty much my rant, I would greatly appreciate advice from upper year students!

TL;DR -- First year bba, didn't make any friends, haven't found a proper routine, feeling guilty when im doing stuff that I like/to relax and subconsciously comparing myself to other students. Does it get better? How can I improve myself to avoid the constant comparison?

Question First year, has anyone paid tuition a different way than online banking?

I’m first year and sorting out tuition payment stuff for Laurier. I know online banking is the standard way but was wondering if anyone here has used anything else to pay tuition. Trying to make sure whatever I do shows up on LORIS properly. I dont want to send it too close to the deadline and then be stressing about if it posted on time

If you have paid a different way before, how long did it take to show up on your account? Did it apply normally or did you have to contact Service Laurier?

Question commuting to laurier

hey guys! i’m gonna be commuting to wlu from mississauga for the following reasons:

- it’s way too expensive for me to afford dorm and would much rather go in debt for law school

- same commute time for schulich (my second choice)

- my dad said he’d buy me a nice car instead ;)

i honestly really love lauriers program and im so excited to attend this fall. i was wondering, will it make a big difference in my uni experience if i don’t live on res? i just don’t wanna feel “left out” or feel ”weird” for not living on res. and if you also commute, how do you find it so far?

i personally don’t mind a 1h20 commute cuz i go to DT often and it’s around the same (laurier would be one str8 bus)

Please let me know!!

Question Parking near Laurier Brantford Campus

Hello everyone,

I have my first in-person class on Monday. I will be commuting every Monday and want to know what parking is like near Brantford campus. I drove to campus in the summer just to get an idea of what it’s like and I’m aware there is a large parking lot somewhere. Does it fill up quickly? I don’t think getting a parking pass is worth it since I’m only there once a week. Does anyone else have experience with paying for the day and how much it costs?

Everything is approaching so quickly and I’m feeling anxious lol. Ps if anyone wants to make friends, I’m more than happy to meet new people. I’m a mature student so my social life varies. Thanks byeee

Question Lack of Salt on Campus

Am I trippin (literally), or does anyone else notice a lack of salt on campus.

I’m not sure if it just melts in the sludge when they apply it, or they’re not doing it at all. There’s a lot of up hill areas that are sludgy and icey, such as ones that lead to Peters/ shlegal. There’s no salt on walkways in front of Laz, or the gym??

What’s goin on? Does anyone else relate?

EDIT: this post isn’t just about a lack of salt, it’s the lack of initiative from the school & city to keep roads and campus walkways safe. If salt cannot be used (or discouraged), then why haven’t I seen a single grain of sand used or any other alternatives?
