Fluff Final Look for Adwair Icon Theme

Thanks for all the feedback on Adwair! I’ve spent some more time working on the theme, mostly refining existing icons and making everything feel more consistent.

At this point, I’m happy with how the app icons and device icons turned out. They’re now pretty much how I wanted them to look from the beginning.

There’s still some work left to do on mimetypes, but it’s not a priority for now. Other than that, I don’t have any major changes planned, so I thought I’d share the current look of the theme.

The project is still available here: Adwair

TIL: latest version of gnome properly sends shapes to blur even on popovers!

You just have to add `backdrop-filter` to your css surfaces. Enjoy!

Fluff Discord GNOME theme update

Post image
33 Upvotes

The visual changes are minimal for the most parts you're going to see, but for the past month I have been polishing the UI and code, and have rewritten some stuff, to make it 1:1 with Adwaita, especially with (most of) Discord settings, user profiles and typography. It was also really laggy, but not anymore. Basically, it should be more pleasant to use, compared to before.

I have, since then, also included a transparent sidebar option, if you're into that, because I am.

Apps I made a small GTK4/libadwaita app to add custom locations to GNOME Weather

Post image
73 Upvotes

GNOME Weather only lets you pick locations from libgweather's built-in list. If your town isn't in there, you can add it through gsettings, but that means hand-writing a GVariant with coordinates in radians.

I first wrote a Bash script for this, and now there's also a small GUI: "Weather Locations".

What it does:

- Add a location by name + latitude/longitude (decimal degrees, "." or "," both work)

- Shows your saved locations and lets you remove them

- Works with native GNOME Weather and detects the Flatpak version (the Flatpak path is less tested)

- Optionally restarts GNOME Weather so the change shows up immediately

Built with Rust, gtk4-rs and libadwaita, MIT licensed. Prebuilt x86_64 binaries are on the Releases page (needs GTK 4 and libadwaita >= 1.4), or build it yourself with cargo + make.

One tip: enter latitude first, then longitude. If you swap them, GNOME Weather happily shows the weather somewhere else on the globe. :)

Feedback and bug reports welcome!

Extensions fluent-osk: i made a new on-screen-keyboard for gnome 50

I built a standalone touch OSK for GNOME 50 that actually feels usable on laptops/2-in-1s.
Even though I didn't have all the necessary skills, all the keyboards I found for my touch-screen laptop were either very disappointing or barely usable for my purposes, so I decided to build one myself. In hindsight, I thought it might be useful to someone else, and I decided to make it public.

It uses a TKL layout with working Fn shortcuts, supports dock/float/full modes from a top-bar toggle. I also include a spacebar cursor navigation, backspace drag-to-delete gesture, smart quote/bracket auto-pairing, and a layout editor (current layout already created are IT and US)

as for now, it's on github, I'll upload it to the extensions store later if anyone finds it useful

Platform GNOME 50.6 is released

GNOME 50.6 is out. It is a bugfix release for the 50 series, which is now old-stable after GNOME 51.

Only six components were updated. Most changes are in GNOME Shell 50.6, Mutter 50.6 and Nautilus 50.4.

Shell fixes an issue where Quick Settings could prevent direct scanout. It also fixes mount notifications staying visible after a drive is disconnected, plus several memory leaks. Mutter fixes auto screen rotation on phones without a tablet-mode switch. Nautilus fixes the read-only file indicator, Properties dialogs opening too small, and makes Replace the default focus in file conflicts.

GLib 2.88.4 also has backported security fixes.

I have the gnome extensions and Gnome extensions manager installed. Are there any tools in the gnome extensions that will provide a workaround, to stop KeyPassXC from locking the databases when the screen saver comes on ?

gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.session idle-delay
uint32 600
gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.screensaver lock-delay
uint32 0

Question Best OOTB Gnome distro?

I was wondering is there any other distro than Ubuntu that does not require you to find some codecs or install anything else after installing OS itself?

Even when i tried fedora workstation and i love how it looks and what it provides… i found out you need to find some commands and put them in terminal just to install codecs and let me tell you… i never knew if that actually worked or i found different ones or bad one etc but i want my system to have every codec and driver installed.

But this is just pathetic that you need to manually find some codecs and drivers to use your os. Why it cannot be a toggle while installing it?

Ubuntu got it all… but nobody likes snaps right?

So my question is.. are there any distros with gnome that would have everything installed (codecs)?

Question GNOME Papers can't find certificates for digitally signing a PDF

Ever since Mozilla Firefox moved its directory (was it version 147?) from ~/.mozilla to comply with XDG specifications GNOME Papers can't find the NSS database and I can't digitally sign PDF with my .P12 certificate that I imported into my Firefox profile. I have a work computer running Fedora 44 Workstation that was upgraded from a previous Fedora 43 (I think, I can't remember whether it was originally a Fedora 42 or not) but now I have a new work-issued laptop and upon doing a fresh Fedora 44 installation I can't get Papers to point to the NSS database to find the certificate. I can sign with LibreOffice Draw after manually specifying the certificate path but I like the way GNOME Papers does it.

Is there a roadmap for having this feature back after the change introduced by Mozilla Firefox? Maybe a way to specifying the NSS manually or something?

I'm not blaming Mozilla Firefox, moving its base directory out of ~/.mozilla was a request that has been ignored for many years and now they finally complied. Papers just needs to catch up, if I get it right.

Apps Waytator - GTK4 Image/video Editor, and screenshot/videorec tool

Thumbnail
gallery
43 Upvotes

Gnome's screenshotting tool is awesome - but post screenshot editing tools are lacking. So I made one!

https://github.com/faetalize/waytator

It's basically an all encompassing screenshot tool - started out as merely an annotator, but expanded in scope recently :P

Not sure if it matters to anyone, but this app is AI-free as well (I'm not anti, but I'm working on this to practice on my C)

Standout features:

Based on GTK4, but fast - sub 70ms launch from cold, so no need for a daemon (lots of pain to get this, GTK is annoying asf)

Sleek design, fits in any WM, blurrrrrrr

More than just for annotating screenshots - you can use waytator to take screenshots directly, either from the gui or from the cli (try binding to `waytator --screenshot --notify`)

Hyper configurable. Almost everything can be rebound

OCR and text extraction (optional tessaract dependency)

can be piped into if you prefer to use your WM's screenshot tool

Planned, coming soon: screen/area recording, GPU accelerated video editing - check the screenshots for a teaser!

Question please logout to view the changes in your code

Thumbnail

So I'm vibe coding this extension that not only correctly apply light mode on gnome but allow me to customize each color. The dark mode tab doesn't have colors as its set to default and on default it will just use all gnome colors as it's already everything black except the "top bar" color that I have set to #36363a so it matches the quick setting color.

Anyway, everytime I need to update this extension to see the changes I have to logout of my computer, and this is SO annoying to do this everytime, like everything closes when I do it.

Is there a way to update the extensions without having to logout everytime?

LLM Assisted I wanted a "Swiss army knife" screenshot tool for GNOME and couldn't find one, so I started Knivchit

Hi everyone. I'd like to explain why I started Knivchit, and ask for your opinion.

(Illustrative render of the capture overlay: rounded selection, annotations and the toolbar. The greyed-out buttons for OCR, translation and QR reading are features that are NOT available yet.)

Why I built it. I use a screenshot tool with annotations every day, and I wanted an open-source "Swiss army knife": one program with a modern-looking capturer and modern features, that can also grow to cover the other things I use in my workflow. Before writing any code I did a thorough search to see whether something like it already existed. I didn't find one that had everything I needed: either I didn't like the design, or it lacked features I rely on. I may well have missed something, which is exactly why I'm posting.

What it does today (alpha)

  • Freezes your screen and lets you draw a selection, rounded or sharp, that you can move and resize.
  • Annotations: rectangle, ellipse, arrow, pen, editable text, mosaic brush and eraser; six colors and undo/redo.
  • Copy to the clipboard, save, or pin the capture in a floating window that stays on top.
  • The final image is composed at your screen's native resolution; configurable global shortcut; light, dark or system theme.
  • Everything is local: no accounts, no telemetry, and no network except an optional "check for updates" button.

(Illustrative render of the main window. The interface is in Spanish for now; "Pronto" means "soon".)

What's next. I'm working on the features that make the "all in one" idea worth it: translation, OCR and clipboard history. They are not available yet, and I'm not putting dates on them. That is why some buttons in the screenshots are greyed out and labeled "Pronto" (soon).

Status, honestly: this is an early alpha. I've tested it on GNOME 50 on Wayland (Fedora 44), and the extension declares support for GNOME 50 only, so other distros and versions may break. The interface is in Spanish only for now.

(Illustrative render of the settings: configurable global shortcut and an optional top-bar icon. The emoji panel and the clipboard are marked "Pronto" because they are not available yet.)

Transparency: I built this with the help of AI coding assistants. The code and its history are public, so please read it and be critical.

Install: a script that downloads the AppImage and the GNOME Shell extension and verifies the SHA-256 sums before touching anything. You download it, read it, then run it (commands are in the README). Licenses: the app is MIT, the extension is GPL-3.0-or-later.

What I'm asking for: criticism, bug reports and opinions. And above all, if you know of a tool that already does what this one does or plans to do, please tell me. I'll take it as inspiration, and if something better already exists, I'd rather know.

Question How much did the donation notification improve GNOME's financial situation?

I couldn't find anything on it and it has almost been a year now. For KDE there was some posts by Nate Graham of when the notification hit their users, but for GNOME I couldn't find anything similar.
