I want to start a shrimp tank but I have no idea where to begin

I have no experience with keeping shrimp or any fish for that matter but I am looking for a new hobby and shrimp keeping has intrigued me. Is there a step by step how to because I have no clue on where to begin. I've looked at the side bar but still I have no idea.

Mod Poll: Should We Ban Ai Use Altogether On This Sub.

It seems a lot of people, possibly the majority, want to see an absolute ban of Ai on this sub, whether in post or comment. So, we wanted to let the community decide. Thanks for your input! - Shrimptank Mod Team

Aquarium/Tank Photos Update on 4ft Tank / Vase

Spent about a month working on this long lava rock centerpiece. I used pieces of cotton ball and superglue to attach the rock to a long piece of schedule 80 PVC pipe (it's a bit thicker, so I figured it would be more sturdy). It was tedious and dusty, but I think it was worth it.

I ran a long airline tube down the middle of it, with an airstone at the bottom. The idea is that the rocks act as a massive filter for the entire tank, because the bubbles circulate the water all around them. It's also a huge amount of surface area for the shrimp to cling to. I have had two sunkist orange in there for the past month with no issues.

I've also put a piece of val at the bottom, a few pieces of guppy grass, and a massive sweet potato vine at the top, so hopefully no water changes are needed. I'm not a huge fan of the heater, but since the house is super cold in the winter, I wanted it warm and stable to build a colony.

Discussion Big mama hopefully recovering our colony

Post image

lost most of our colony to a fungal infection 😢 lost two of our reoccurring producers in the wipe out. it was heartbreaking and defeating. today we woke up to this big mama 🥲 our past shrimp never had this many eggs in their satchel before. so excited, hoping there’s a shot at our colony rebuilding and not having to restart the tank as a whole.

we went from over 30 to possibly under 10 in a two week span, woke up to dead shrimp every morning.. after this last water change the deaths have seemed to stop and the white fuzz they had has been clearing up 🤞 tank is 5 months old, 6 gallons, water parameters are food

its definitely been 3 weeks now since my pregnant gwendoline has been packed with eggs, last i saw her (about 2 days) she looked like she was about to burst

so im wondering if anyone who has gone through successful shrimp pregnancies knows if its normal for them to disappear for some time while they birth their babies because i looked really well and found everyone but she is missing

Help: Breeding How many shrimp can I safely fit?

I have a ~15 gallon tank stocked with 20 neos, 4 Amano, 4 oto, 4 pygmy Corys, and 8-9 exclamation Rasbora. I now have 5 eggnant mothers and many more saddled ready-to-be mothers. Question is, should I set up an extra tank? Or is this enough space to house what’s to come?

I have set up 10l or 3gal Cube a few days ago and thinking about adding blue jelly neo caridina and some amanos but i'm unsure if its to small for them.

Also dont worry the shrimp will me go in about 2-3 weeks !

Planning on having a watery cave with shrimp and plant, with a land portion on top. But not sure how the shrimp and plants will do in the cave.

Beginner Collateral damage??

• Upvotes

I started my shrimp tank toward the end of August. I started with my substrate, shell, rock layout a Buddha statue and some bamboo plants. I have a 5 gallon tank, so I decided to get 4 neon tetras to start the biofilm. (Yes - I know my tank is smaller than they recommend and they also suggest starting with 6 of a schooling fish. But my main goal in buying them was seasoning my tank.).

I have been so focused getting my water, layout and shrimp ratio to get them to start breeding and such. When I peered into the tank a couple days ago, I noticed my neons acting crazy. Doing a dance. I googled the mating process of them. With everything saying everything has to be so specific for neons to breed. I noticed the female shoot out at least 6 bursts of eggs.

I know the survival of any of the fry is almost nil. I haven’t the setup for separating them and the fact they devour any of their own eggs they find.

While I am STILL waiting on one of my female neocaridinas to become berried, I somehow managed to find the perfect parameters for neon tetra breeding.

Help: Algae & Pests Neocardina fix?

Post image
• Upvotes

Long story short - we started a gundam shrimp tank in August before we left for university. We didn’t stock it because we wanted to let the tank cycle while we were gone.

Planning to stock it with neocaridina when we get home from school, but I’m wondering: will the shrimp be able to clean this up? There seems to still be a lot of biofilm despite online sources saying it’ll clear up on its own.

I also had a nerite snail - in an attempt to add some ammonia and keep the tank semi clean while I’m gone.

He has not been seen by my family in a long time (I’m thinking he climbed out somehow)

Any advice on how to clean the tank when I get back? Or would grazing shrimp eventually take care of it?

Thanks in advance!!!
