Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 20th/25th anniversary rewatch of Kanon.

Uguu!

This is a continuation of the Air rewatch and that series celebrating its 20th anniversary last year. Kanon is more known than Air, but obviously not as well known as Clannad, all three of which are visual novels made by Key.

For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the 2002 series as well as the 2006 series. The 2006 series is considered the better of the two series, but who else is gonna do a rewatch of 2002 Kanon? I’ve actually never seen anything of Kanon so this gives me the chance of contrast them. I know there’s a girl who says Uguu, but other than that I’m going in completely blind.

Maybe this will all lead to the Clannad 20th anniversary rewatch. Don’t hold me on that.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the sub, by the way.

I wonder if this may be the episode where we break the record of the amount of times Ayu says Uguu. She said it a total of 27 times in the 2002 series. We're currently at 25.

Talks of a dream again

Mom shaking you awake

The morning scene remains the same

"I wonder when dreams began to have no end..."

Deep thoughts with Jack Handy

In the middle of town

Young Yuuichi with Ayu

Uguu counter: 26

Yuuichi gonna head off

But she is hungry

He'll get her something to eat

She wants Taiyaki

These two are adorable together

Warm Taiyaki. Yum.

Now they has a sit

This is just some grade A wholesome stuff.

Yuuichi asking why she was crying

She doesn't give an answer

She insists she isn't Ayu Ayu

What about Ayaya?

She wants more Taiyaki

Yuuichi promises to eat more with her someday.

Pinky promise

Uguu counter: 27

We are tied

And Yuuichi agrees to the promise of pinkies.

Ayu is really sweet, though I do wonder where her parents are.

Was that Nayuki?

Late again as always

Yuuichi waking up

Makoto trying to be mischievous

But Yuuichi is wise to her antics.

A midnight snack. Sure.

And so Makoto eats the konnyaku she was trying to prank Yuuichi with.

Is konnyaku basically tofu?

Also, I guess Auu is Makoto's catchphrase.

Morning

Those are a bunch of boxes

Makoto wakes up, complaining of heartburn.

Maybe I should start an Auu counter...

Akiko heading out

She asks Yuuichi to deliver Nayuki's lunch to her.

Man, this is a totally spacious... er, space.

There's Nayuki doing her track meet responsibilities.

I like the upbeat, quirky music 🎶

So, track meet is just running around in a circle?

Yuuichi outside

He runs into Kaori

She says she's out and about because she doesn't want to be at home.

What you mean by that?

A fight with her parents

Kaori warns Yuuichi not to cause Nayuki too much trouble.

In her nature to work herself to the brim.

Yuuichi walking around town

There's Akiko

Now they has walk

And Ayu is here

She falls

Here it comes...

Uguu counter: 28

And there it goes

Ayu needs to stop being so clumsy

Ayu and Akiko meet

Uguu counter: 29

Hey, the Taiyaki owner gave her free food.

How nice of him

We learn Akiko is apparently the landlady if the house.

Does that mean Yuuichi has to pay rent?

Or wait, is Yuuichi being facetious?

I think the latter

Akiko seems to recognize Ayu before

Back at home

Ayu falls. Of course.

Uguu counter: 30

There's Makoto

Lol at Yuuichi calling her a freeloader like him.

I guess that answers whether or not he pays rent.

I feel like Makoto has said Auu in this one episode more than how many times Ayu has said Uguu in five.

Makoto and Ayu alone

Ayu offers her a Taiyaki

She seems to like it

Aww, bonding moment. You see to love it.

Unpacking montage

I believe that is flan

Uguu counter: 31

Yuuichi tells them what a big help they were.

Makoto looking on from afar

Now Yuuichi tells Akiko Ayu is looking for something valuable.

Akiko tells her she hopes she finds it soon.

Time for Ayu to head off

She regrets she can't wish Makoto goodbye.

But there she is, from the window.

Ayu waves at her

And Makoto waves back

Why do I suddenly have death flags I'm seeing?

Yuuichi greeting Nayuki, who's finally home.

She mentions leaving her notes at school.

Lol at Yuuichi trying to be like "Whelp, not my problem".

Nayuki says the teacher is really strict about doing your homework.

I guess this is before cell phones where you can text the teacher what the assignment is.

Yuuichi walking now

He's gotta go to the school to retrieve the notes.

The stars really are amazing

And of course this is when Yuuichi sees the girl we saw at the end of the last episode.

It looks like Mai

In fact, it is Mai

But why is she here?

Overall, this was a decent, low conflict episode meant to set up the Mai stuff while keeping the other plot points simmering. Ayu meets Akiko and Makoto, and that's really the big development here. I kinda liked how laid back everything was as we got to enjoy everyone's personalities. I think the writing is good enough to pull off that sorta thing.

This was middle of the road for me. Better than episode 2, but behind episodes 1 and 3. I think going forward things are going to pick up.

First Timer

More unusual opening narration.

Seems we’re returning to the flashback to Yuichi’s childhood with Ayu.

Poor Ayu. She’s so sad.

Kid Yuichi seems very sweet.

Man, has this kid always been obsessed with taiyaki?

I’ve actually had taiyaki before, I had got it from a small grocery store near me that specializes in various East Asian foods. I got a sweet one filled with chocolate and vanilla ice cream but they make savory taiyaki too which I believe is what they’re eating here.

Kid Yuichi says he’ll be there but something tells me he forgets.

Makoto’s prank failing is really funny.

Oh yeah, I incorrectly identified that thing as a  block of tofu in the previous episode but I’d like to set the record straight and say that it’s actually konjac jelly.

Makoto and Yuichi’s dynamic is pretty funny.

I am contractually obligated to bring this up every time it’s in an anime. The gym shorts we see the girls in this episode wearing (bloomers) had already been mostly phased out of most schools for more unisex gym shorts by the time this anime aired in 2006. Although when the original visual novel came out and honestly even when the 2002 anime came out they probably were still somewhat common.

I just think it’s interesting that this old school girls gym uniform is still treated like a stock costume in some anime even though it’s less of a thing anymore. Although I have noticed that in more recent anime/manga actual high school scenes have the modern unisex gym shorts outfit while it’s mostly in works that are set in the past or in fantasy sequences that use the old bloomers uniform.

Jeez, Ayu is pretty clumsy. She needs to watch where she’s walking.

Ayu has officially met Makoto now.

Seeing Ayu and Makoto’s interactions are very cute. Especially them bonding over taiyaki.

Yuichi forgot about Nayuki’s notes. He needs to be more considerate about his cousin. And less forgetful.

That’s a very mysterious cliffhanger to end on.

More unusual opening narration.

Seems to be this show's calling card

Seems we’re returning to the flashback to Yuichi’s childhood with Ayu.

Yay

Poor Ayu. She’s so sad.

Uguu...

Kid Yuichi seems very sweet.

Yeah right :P

Man, has this kid always been obsessed with taiyaki?

Do days end in Y?

I’ve actually had taiyaki before, I had got it from a small grocery store near me that specializes in various East Asian foods. I got a sweet one filled with chocolate and vanilla ice cream but they make savory taiyaki too which I believe is what they’re eating here.

Sounds yummy

Kid Yuichi says he’ll be there but something tells me he forgets.

He forgot 💀

Makoto’s prank failing is really funny.

A taste of her own medicine

Oh yeah, I incorrectly identified that thing as a  block of tofu in the previous episode but I’d like to set the record straight and say that it’s actually konjac jelly.

Huh

Makoto and Yuichi’s dynamic is pretty funny.

I enjoy it so much

When was it phased out? The VN came out in 1999.

Jeez, Ayu is pretty clumsy. She needs to watch where she’s walking.

Rough

Ayu has officially met Makoto now.

YES

Seeing Ayu and Makoto’s interactions are very cute. Especially them bonding over taiyaki.

Like two sides of the same coin

Yuichi forgot about Nayuki’s notes. He needs to be more considerate about his cousin. And less forgetful.

That he does

That’s a very mysterious cliffhanger to end on.

No kidding

When was it phased out? The VN came out in 1999.

It began in the late 90s but it wasn't all at once so some schools still had them into the 2000s.

I just remember in Strawberry Eggs you were making a big stink over them being introduced as if it were some brand new thing.

Seems like Yuuichi had a hard time handling both Nayuki and Ayu at the same time, be it during the past or present.

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

I almost wonder if Yuuichi has ADHD or something. I sometimes forget things because my mind is running 1000 miles a minute.

First-timer for the 2006 series, subbed

I was getting a bit impatient with the series since I have just watched the 2002 one. I know the major story beats and wanted the story to just move to the impactful parts, I guess? However this episode I did not get that feeling at all, I liked the pace very much (and it wasn't quick). I liked how everything was done and had time to breathe. Especially the training scene which characterizes Nayuki a bit more and was not in the old series (I think?).

I know I'm sort of contradicting myself here but I'm very torn between wanting to reach the emotional climaxes (and find out if anything changes) and simply enjoying being in this winter world. Today I was in mode 2. Also loving the social warmth in their household and how much food (very basic human necessity) is used to show people they are welcome. It's ultra comfy and welcoming to me, very nice stuff.

Didn't get anything new on Mai yet but that is coming up very soon it seems. Also very interested in any details regarding the mysterious nature of the dream sequences and the missing memories.

2

u/Holofan4life 10d ago

I like the way the show paces itself because I feel like they're doing just enough to move things along.

I'm watching this in accordance with Death Note and where we're at in the rewatch I almost feel like they don't let things breathe enough. This show by comparison strings things along rather fluidly.

1

I don't ask myself questions?

2

u/DivineEternal1 10d ago

Yuuichi's pretty nice as a little kid in this version. He was still a jerk in the 2002 version. I guess he still forgot about poor Nayuki though...

Konjac revenge! The dropping of the stuff down Makoto's shirt is a memory that came back from my first watch. I think I replayed that scene a few times because the reactions are so funny.

Makoto gives off more little sister vibes than romantic.

Nayuki is such a sweetheart. Her mom is too, even if they're both a little odd.

Uguu gets to meet best mom.

Taiyaki guy feeling bad for scaring Uguu so she gets free food. Score!

Akiko remembers something. Suspicious.

Angel meets demon.

Uguu is a cute verbal tic, but that Auu is something else.

Angel bribes demon with taiyaki.

Makoto isn't tired, she's plotting.

Akiko is collecting new daughters?

Be careful, sword wielding girls apparently roam the school at night.

A wild Mai has appeared!

What are your thoughts on Ayu meeting Akiko and Makoto?

Honestly a good pairing.

Why do you think Mai is staying after school hours?

She patrols the school and kills anyone that sneaks inside during the night./s

1

u/Holofan4life 10d ago

I actually think Yuuichi is more of a perk in this version than in the 2002 edition. He calls characters the wrong name to mess with them. But it works because I think it adds a wrinkle to his character he previously didn't have.

2

u/DivineEternal1 10d ago

To me it comes off as more obvious snark or joking. In 2002 it just seemed like it was a character flaw. I mean, he could be a little nicer in his teasing, but overall I think this version handles it better.

1

u/Holofan4life 10d ago

What I mean is he's more snarky in this version it feels like.

2

u/DivineEternal1 9d ago

Yeah, he has more snark. But it feels much less rude than what the 2002 Yuuichi does. And to be honest, some of the girls do walk into it and deserve it in a way...

2

u/Holofan4life 9d ago

We'll see if you feel differently with the next episode lol

Thoughts on Yuuichi messing with Ayu by calling her Ayu Ayu?

I know he's calling her that to make fun of her, but honestly it's cute.

Thoughts on Makoto trying to prank Yuuichi with konnyaku?

Making anyone eat that stuff should be considered a culinary crime.

Thoughts on Makoto being forced to eat the konnyaku?

Should we elevate it to a war crime?

Thoughts on us seeing Nayuki deal with her track meet duties?

It seems to be a joy in her life, so good for her.

Thoughts on Kaori saying she's out and about because she got into an argument with her parents?

I'd be more surprised by a teenager saying they've never fought with their parents.

Thoughts on the Taiyaki owner giving Ayu free food?

Feels bad for scaring her. And she always came back and paid.

Thoughts on Yuuichi jokingly referring to Akiko as landlady?

Feed him the special jam and see if he calls her that again.

Thoughts on Makoto calling Yuuichi a freeloader?

She's the freeloader. He's a family member and she's the guardian. And for all we know, Yuuichi's parents are providing some money for food and such.

Thoughts on Ayu and Makoto bonding over Taiyaki?

If they form an alliance Yuuichi is... not screwed. Those two would find a way to mess up their own plans of revenge against him or execute them so poorly they'd always get caught.

Yeah, probably

Thoughts on Makoto being forced to eat the konnyaku?

Should we elevate it to a war crime?

Is it a war crime if she started it?

Thoughts on us seeing Nayuki deal with her track meet duties?

It seems to be a joy in her life, so good for her.

The 2002 anime kinda glossed over what Nayuki did in her freetime.

Thoughts on Kaori saying she's out and about because she got into an argument with her parents?

I'd be more surprised by a teenager saying they've never fought with their parents.

I know, right?

Thoughts on the Taiyaki owner giving Ayu free food?

Feels bad for scaring her. And she always came back and paid.

I'm more invested in Ayu's relationship with this random Taiyaki owner than I probably should be lol

Thoughts on Yuuichi jokingly referring to Akiko as landlady?

Feed him the special jam and see if he calls her that again.

Now, THAT is a war crime

Thoughts on Makoto calling Yuuichi a freeloader?

She's the freeloader. He's a family member and she's the guardian. And for all we know, Yuuichi's parents are providing some money for food and such.

Maybe

Thoughts on Ayu and Makoto bonding over Taiyaki?

If they form an alliance Yuuichi is... not screwed. Those two would find a way to mess up their own plans of revenge against him or execute them so poorly they'd always get caught.

They are both girl failures. And we love them for it.
