Wtf, so it turns out Makoto is a fox all along, which kinda explains why she has a different form when Yuichi sees her 7 years ago. This time she takes form of a teenager, but she has to lose her memory as the exchange. And her body's weakening too, will the next episode mark the end of her story arc?
And how did Akiko and Mai know about this?
I guess the revenge thing is about how Yuichi left Makoto 7 years ago without telling anything to her.

You know, Yuuichi potentially leaving Makoto has actually been foreshadowed pretty subtlely. How many times have we seen Yuuichi be late meeting with someone because he forgot? It's very possible when Yuuichi left town, he didn't say goodbye to Makoto and that made her feel sad.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 20th/25th anniversary rewatch of Kanon.
Uguu!
This is a continuation of the Air rewatch and that series celebrating its 20th anniversary last year. Kanon is more known than Air, but obviously not as well known as Clannad, all three of which are visual novels made by Key.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the 2002 series as well as the 2006 series. The 2006 series is considered the better of the two series, but who else is gonna do a rewatch of 2002 Kanon? I’ve actually never seen anything of Kanon so this gives me the chance of contrast them. I know there’s a girl who says Uguu, but other than that I’m going in completely blind.
Maybe this will all lead to the Clannad 20th anniversary rewatch. Don’t hold me on that.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the sub, by the way.
It is 2:22 in the morning, do you know where your control on your life is?

Well, that was easy

So, it's settled. The cat is Piro.
Makoto can be cute when she isn't being a gremlin.

She has a feeling this cat is the one who helped her after she lost her memory.
That's kinda an insane thing to say, Makoto.
Makoto now wondering why pork buns are so delicious.
She's trying to engage in small talk.

Yuuichi found Mai, who tells her he found Makoto.
Mai says she doesn't know anything about Makoto.
There's nothing she can do

The mysterious girl says she must be waiting on him.
So, Makoto is a name from Yuuichi's past. Interesting.

It feels like he's really starting to get along with Makoto.
Oh nos. Piro is in pain.

At least it wasn't too severe
Yuuichi sleeping with the cat now.
Yuuichi remarks Makoto was the name of an older girl he had a crush on when he was little.
Surprisingly, this wasn't in the 2002 version.
Piro seems to be feeling better, so that's good.
Yuuichi back with the mysterious girl.
Amano. That's her name.
Mishio, specifically
Yuuichi wants to know if she'd be able to help Makoto.
She won't be her friend, though
"There's nothing crueler than that."
Makoto seems to have done something wrong. Besides of course almost unaliving a cat.
Mishio says Yuuichi must have met her sometime way in the past.
Yuuichi doesn't want to hear anything more.

Yuuichi remarks that this is where he and she parted ways.

Makoto really does seem to be having fun.
At home now
Oden for dinner
Yuuichi tells Nayuki it's like Makoto is opening up more.
Nayuki now says her mom is trying to gather all the information she can about Makoto.
Makoto barging in Yuuichi's room.
She wants to make paper airplanes.
Unfortunately, he's not in the mood.
She really wants to spend all her time with him. She even wants to read manga together.
Come on, Yuuichi. Be there with her.
Well, he's trying I guess
Yuuichi wasn't a fan of the story. Makoto was.
Eating now
Makoto keeps dropping her chopsticks.
Yuuichi using it as an opportunity to mess with her.
Makoto trying to wake Yuuichi up.
Piro is in his bed
She wants to sleep with him

Now she's sleeping with both of them.

Yuuichi says it's like he's in a dream.
Oh wow. Was Makoto a fox in a previous life?
Yuuichi played with the fox all the time.

He admits albeit reluctantly Makoto is cute when she isn't playing pranks.
That's high praise coming from him.
Mishio reveals that Makoto isn't human. Also, that Makoto only came to see Yuuichi.
In the midst of a fleeting miracle.
A tiny sparkle she got in exchange for her life.
Two sacrifices had to be made: Her memory, and her life.
She will soon start losing her strength and find it increasingly difficult to act like a human.
This is all incurable
Damn
Mishio tells him to prepare for what's about to happen.
And also...
"Please don't drag me into this any further!"
Rude much?
Overall, I actually really enjoyed this episode. Yuuichi and Makoto are starting to bond and getting along better, but it comes at the expense of knowing this won't last for much longer. Things are on the fast track to disappointment. Mishio being revealed who she is while keeping the door open for learning more about her was really well done and came at a point that made sense for the story. It's like the show knows when is the appropriate time to focus on stuff.
It's interesting because I've praised the show for juggling so many characters in an effective manner. But as the Makoto stuff rachet it, naturally the other characters take a backseat. This all makes sense and I think the episode benefitted by its more stripped down approach. It led to things being more focused.
I have this episode only behind the last two. It continues the trend of solid episodes that have been the show's MO. I could see the climax of the r Makoto arc being the show's first truly great episode, and with the pacing picking up that could be as soon as next episode.
I await with feverish anticipation.

Very bittersweet. It's like you can tell something bad is about to happen.

It seems to contradict her trying to get revenge on Yuuichi. Did he hurt her in some way?

You know, I’m not sure if Makoto is cut out to be a responsible pet owner.
Yuichi is really bad at coming up with pet names.
Seeing the cat on top of Makoto’s head is super cute
Yuichi seems to have known Makoto as a kid which is an interesting development.
Yuichi and Makoto have a funny dynamic.
Nice of Yuichi to clean up cat vomit for Makoto.
Yuichi claims that the Makoto Sawatari he knew in the past is a different girl. Very suspicious.
Frankly, I don’t trust Yuichi’s memory.
That was a very cryptic comment Yuichi just made about someone who used to stay in his room. Very creepy too.
This new girl is named Mishio Amano. There’s so many characters in this show.
She’s got something up with her too. I just don’t know what.
Mishio definitely seems like she knows more about this whole situation.
Oh hey, Yuichi is remembering something about him and Makoto.
More cute and silly interactions between Yuichi and Makoto.
I feel bad for calling Yuichi a jerk. He can be nice to Makoto sometimes.

Makoto has some trouble reading. Which I feel like is fair, the Japanese alphabet looks difficult.
I like the art style change for the manga Yuichi and Makoto read.

I joked about Shiori secretly being a ghost but if it turned out to be Makoto I’d be very surprised.

Akiko’s been trying to look into finding Makoto’s family.
Even though I've rewatched the series a few times, it only just hit me that this is actually doubly difficult for her [because]she has to keep telling people she's not looking for her former neighbor but a girl about half her age with the same name. Speaking of which, did we get a reaction shot of her to Makoto's name like we did with Ayu? I can't remember.

- They seem to have accepted each other more and more, even Nayuki commenting on how Yuuichi now treats Makoto. It's beautiful and sad, the impending doom adds to the sense of fulfillment they get from their deepening connection. Conditio humana at its best. We need each other but there can be no permanence for mortal beings. I'm not knowledgeable enough to really know but to me it seems like an instance of mono no aware. Don't crucify me, I really don't know enough about japanese literature to claim this with certainty.
The question that pops up for me is: Would it have been a different feeling if they had more time together, years maybe? When is it enough if there is an enough?
For now she's just the mysterious girl who knows too much.
I think the reveal was a lot better done compared to the 2002 version but questions still remain: what makes all these miracles possible? What is the magical nature of this place? Or maybe it is due a certain person? Is Yuuichi's amnesia also supernatural? Mai's demons? I need to know more, I'm sort of craving logical fulfillment in addition to the emotional one we're already getting.

The thing I've noticed the last couple episodes is the unhinged stuff Makoto has said. Last episode she said Yuuichi let her die, and thie episode she mentioned a cat saving her. Those are not normal things for a person to be saying.
I thought Mishio was handled really well and had more of a presence. It felt like in the 2002 anime she just kinda existed.

I forget, have we actually seen this on screen when they met before Makoto's transformation and she died? I only recall her listening to Yuuichi talk about OG Makoto with her in fox form.
It felt like in the 2002 anime she just kinda existed.

Piro gets a name. Yuuichi is either trolling or has no idea what girls like. Probably trolling.
Makoto and Yuuichi have total sibling energy.
Mai... How do you know? Why would that girl with the short hair know?
Ooh. Memory flashback about Makoto.
Yes Makoto, cats are cute. Cat and fox girls are better.
Cats are lactose intolerant, so don't give them milk. I think they're okay with it if you let them drink it from when they're kittens. Same for people. Your body gets used to the lactose if you do.
Yuuichi doesn't want to know the truth behind Makoto. And I'm sad my favorite girl gets her route first. Girls tend to disappear in Key anime when their route is over.
That punch looked like it actually had a little power behind it.

Great. People often regret not spending more time with a loved one after they can't anymore. 'Last Regrets' suddenly feels relevant as the theme song now.
She's just trying to help Yuuichi get prepared for what is coming. Good for her even if it looks really hard on her.
Fox Makoto must have loved Yuuichi and it hurt when he left her behind. Explains the cat on the bridge scene, too.
