First Timer for the 2006 version, subbed
QOTD
Convenient timing don't you think? But it does beg the bigger question of what is up with his memory? We have not really dealt with that topic in quite some time.
One more interesting piece of japanese folklore and mythology. I gotta get into that some more it enhances a lot of anime storytelling I'm told. Always cool to know more about the cultural background of a story you enjoy.
I feel for her, they showed her pain and the following personality change very well IMO. One thing that is unclear and interesting to me about her encounter: did she meet a human child or an animal too? That wasn't really made clear
Meh, she's just a child. For her it's about being and getting to stay with someone.

I really liked we get some lore drop in this show and some explanation as to what is happening. That was really my biggest problem with the 2002 series was it felt like the show was more about the moment rather than the whys and hows.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 20th/25th anniversary rewatch of Kanon.
Uguu!
This is a continuation of the Air rewatch and that series celebrating its 20th anniversary last year. Kanon is more known than Air, but obviously not as well known as Clannad, all three of which are visual novels made by Key.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the 2002 series as well as the 2006 series. The 2006 series is considered the better of the two series, but who else is gonna do a rewatch of 2002 Kanon? I’ve actually never seen anything of Kanon so this gives me the chance of contrast them. I know there’s a girl who says Uguu, but other than that I’m going in completely blind.
Maybe this will all lead to the Clannad 20th anniversary rewatch. Don’t hold me on that.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the sub, by the way.
I've actually seen a lot of interesting movies the last couple months. Obsession, The Backrooms, The Odyssey, Project Hail Mary, the latest Studio Ghibli offerings, Your Letter, all of which have been pretty good. This has been a good year for movies.
Piro eating
Makoto continues to drop her chopsticks.
Dropsticks
Yuuichi looks really concerned
Walking outside now
Makoto says she likes it better when it's warm.
Yuuichi remarks it'll get warm soon.
Maybe for you...
At school
Yuuichi wants to speak to Mishio.
Yuuichi now recalling taking care of a fox.
Eventually, though, Yuuichi had to go back to him home planet.
Er, hometown
All this happened in the span of two weeks.
Yuuichi with Makoto again
They're in town, with Makoto munching on a pork bun.
Bells
She wants it
And so Yuuichi buys it for her
Now the idea of taking a picture together is being broached.
Makoto dismisses it, saying she's nothing but a freeloader.
Eating curry now
Makoto enjoys it
Brushing teeth now
They don't ever call it a teethbrush.
Is toothpaste spicy? Never heard that before.
Yuuichi is helping her brush her teeth.
Now Makoto says Piro wants to sleep with him.
Sure, Jan
And of course, it's both Makoto and Piro.
Yuuichi getting up now
He's roaming the forest
Makoto. She followed him.
Left behind all alone...
"Don't try to remember!"
And then Yuuichi hugs her
A human girl named Makoto. That's what she is.
Back in bed
Makoto says when she's alone, she's in a dark place.
Yuuichi vows he won't ever go out by himself again.
Bet
School again
Yuuichi sees Mishio
But she ignores him
Rude much?
Yuuichi can't find Makoto
Gone without a trace
Even the nursery school doesn't know where she is.
Yuuichi says it's all his fault
Oh, there she is
And then she faints
Piro is gone, she laments
Yuuichi is gonna go looking for him.
Makoto lying down
Yuuichi is there for her
He promises as such
Yuuichi heading to school
But Makoto doesn't want him to leave.
I guess he's gonna stay
Yuuichi spending time with Makoto
He's even feeding her oranges
Yuuichi with Mishio
Mishio says Makoto runs a fever when she starts losing her strength.
Even still, she stays in her human form.
"That's how strong her feelings are for you."
Feelings for him are what keep her human.
If she runs another fever, chances are she won't be able to survive it again.
Damn
Nothing he can do
Now she's recalling about ancient times.
Youkou, you meaning mysterious and kou meaning fox.
Misfortune befalls any village where the Youkou have been sighted.
This is her
Mishio says they're actually really nice
She even befriended someone she met on Monomi Hill.
But after a while, the friend started forgetting all kinds of things.
All Mishio could do was watch it happen.
Since then, she became the way she is.
"But I hope you will remain strong."
Yuuichi back home
Now he recalls to Akiko and Nayuki that Makoto is the fox from long ago.
Akiko says when she would go shopping, the bells on her wallet would ring.
She knew of the fox all along.
Yuuichi saying he's going to be absent from school for a while.
He wants to stay by Makoto's side
And so he proceeds to do so
Makoto playing with her bells
Looks like Akiko and Nayuki are going to leave them alone.
Snowing now
Yuuichi and Makoto reading manga
Makoto says she wants to get married.
"I want to... marry you, Yuuichi."
Oh, boy
Yuuichi hugs Makoto as he looks muy conflicto.
Overall, this was a good episode. It felt tedious at points since it was mostly Yuuichi and Makoto hanging out together, but I also see it as being like the calm before the storm. The more and more times, the less likely it seems like Makoto is gonna survive. And I see this as all part of that building up process. It also seems to be our first tease that there’s more to Akiko than meets the eye. We'll see if that leads anywhere.
A step back from some of the recent episodes, but I think they did enough to keep the story going. Shit is probably gonna hit the fan next episode, and we'll see how the characters deal with what is sure to be a not so happy ending.

Makoto is having trouble with her chopsticks. Definitely a bit concerning.
[Air] Makoto’s whole situation is definitely reminding me of Misuzu
I’m seriously worried about Makoto after this whole opening scene.
Yuichi has remembered something about his childhood again. This time something about a baby fox.
Is Makoto a fox?
Those bells seem important.
Has Makoto never brushed her teeth before? Gross.
Yuichi just left the house in the middle of the night. That’s a bit weird.
Oh hey Makoto went to find him.
Wait, is Makoto actually the fox? I was joking before.
Yuichi doesn’t want Makoto to remember.
Yuichi can be really sweet to Makoto sometimes.
Mishio’s still around. I’m still very suspicious of her.
Makoto hasn’t come home. This seems bad.
Oh yay she’s home. Doesn’t look so good though.
Aw man. The way Yuichi is talking to Makoto is making it sound like she’s dying.
It’s nice to see Yuichi taking care of her.

I watched the 2002 series and one of my theories is she's supposed to be an interpretation of the grim reaper.
That would be interesting. I finished playing Persona 3 Reload recently and there's a certain character in that game that reminds me of Mishio and death is a big theme in that game too.

I don't like that. Especially since Makoto's behavior has become increasingly childlike. I'll be honest, I am a bit uncomfortable with the pattern of these Key stories infantilizing their female leads.

I don't like that. Especially since Makoto's behavior has become increasingly childlike. I'll be honest, I am a bit uncomfortable with the pattern of these Key stories infantilizing their female leads.
Is Makoto a female lead? I'd argue it's probably Ayu.
Anyway, I doubt it'll actually lead to anything...

And Amano understands what Yuichi feels because she also once experienced what Yuichi did right now.

He's finally remembering Makoto. Giving his fox girl some pampering in her last few days.

Makoto's VA is really getting those adorable yet pitiful fox sounds and voice.
Amano really is worried. Finally admits she had a foxy friend turn human too.
So Akiko and Nayuki know now. Of course Akiko knew he was secretly keep a fox back then and even played with it. And then she tells the to be boyfriend and girlfriend.
She looks so happy.
Okay... she wants to get married. So they can always be together forever. Dawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
Yeah, next episode is gonna be fun. Last episode of the arc likely.
