I just love how the little angel doll scene always gets me every time, it's such a sweet but quietly devastating moment in the series.

u/Holofan4life 1d ago
They did a great job interpersing the flashbacks with the rest of the episode.

Thoughts on Yuuichi failing to get Ayu an angel doll from the crane machine?
Thoughts on Ayu saying when you talk ghosts, you summon them?
Thoughts on Ayu wanting to grow up to be pretty like Nayuki?
Thoughts on Nayuki being all eepy?
Thoughts on honey bear for yes, ponpoko tanuki for no?
Thoughts on Shiori carrying a bunch of medicine?
Thoughts on Shiori referring to herself as a Cinderella who missed her ball?
Thoughts on Kitagawa's ball outfit?
Thoughts on Kitagawa being on the ball committee?
Thoughts on Yuuichi arriving late to the ball?
Thoughts on Mai being unable to handle compliments?
Thoughts on Yuuichi saying they only dance he knows how to do it the monkey dance?
What are your thoughts on everyone having fun until demons crash the ball?
What are your thoughts on the episode ending with the student council president being upset with Mai?

Shiori shares her surname with Kaori but Kaori has no idea about her? Wonder what kind of relationship is this.
And the demon finally makes its appearance, and for some reason Mai gets blamed for it from Kuze and the other students.
2
u/Holofan4life 1d ago
Kuze is a total b word.
I wonder if perhaps Kaori is lying and trying to downplay their relationship.

First Timer
I’m still trying to figure out what all this opening narration means
More Yuichi and Ayu childhood stuff going on which is pretty interesting.
Ayu’s afraid of ghosts. She’s pretty cute.
Yuichi and Ayu’s interactions here are pretty cute.
Nayuki being all sleepy in the morning is cute
The callback to what Yuichi told Mai to say instead of yes or no is pretty funny. Wasn’t expecting that.
Shiori loves eating ice cream in the winter. I dunno why but that makes me really suspicious.
Okay good, someone saw Yuichi interacting with Shiori. So Shiori probably isn’t a ghost.
At the very least people other than Yuichi can see her.
Okay this girl’s story about Shiori really turns things on it’s head. Something’s definitely up.
Shiori being Kaori’s sister is also a surprise.
Kitagawa is apparently cosplaying as Vegas-era Elvis for the ball
So judging by Kaori’s reaction either Shiori is someone else happens to have the same last name or Kaori is lying and something happened to Shiori.
What is this show Yuichi is watching?
Man. Kid Yuichi took money from Nayuki. He kinda sucks.
Oh hey it’s time for the ball.
I’m still confused why Kitagawa is trying to be Elvis.
Lots of neat dresses.
Man. This Kuze guy sucks.
Seems we’re having a waltz scene. Suppose that makes sense with the episode’s title.
Oh jeez there’s a ghost or something attacking the ball. That’s not good.
I have no idea what’s going on.
Oh jeez Mai has her sword out.
Mai does look slightly insane doing this.
Yeah Mai’s not gonna be able to explain this one.

I’m still trying to figure out what all this opening narration means
Have you ever had a dream?
More Yuichi and Ayu childhood stuff going on which is pretty interesting.
My theory is Ayu ie the one giving the narration.
Ayu’s afraid of ghosts. She’s pretty cute.
It makes Yuuichi making ghost noises in episode 6 funnier in hindsight.
Yuichi and Ayu’s interactions here are pretty cute.
Naturally
Nayuki being all sleepy in the morning is cute
She needs to take better care of herself
The callback to what Yuichi told Mai to say instead of yes or no is pretty funny. Wasn’t expecting that.
Me neither
Shiori loves eating ice cream in the winter. I dunno why but that makes me really suspicious.
Like drinking coffee during Summer
Okay good, someone saw Yuichi interacting with Shiori. So Shiori probably isn’t a ghost.
Maybe...
At the very least people other than Yuichi can see her.
That's good
Okay this girl’s story about Shiori really turns things on it’s head. Something’s definitely up.
No kidding
Shiori being Kaori’s sister is also a surprise.
What sister? I don't have a sister. -- Kaori, probably
Kitagawa is apparently cosplaying as Vegas-era Elvis for the ball
I was thinking more Freddie Mercury
So judging by Kaori’s reaction either Shiori is someone else happens to have the same last name or Kaori is lying and something happened to Shiori.
This certainly makes Kaori more interesting.
What is this show Yuichi is watching?
For real
Man. Kid Yuichi took money from Nayuki. He kinda sucks.
Kid Yuuichi makes teenager Yuuichi look like a saint.
Oh hey it’s time for the ball.
Yay
I’m still confused why Kitagawa is trying to be Elvis.
He wants to have fun
Lots of neat dresses.
Indeed
Man. This Kuze guy sucks.
Who's worse: This guy or the student council president from Fruits Basket?
Seems we’re having a waltz scene. Suppose that makes sense with the episode’s title.
Indeed
Oh jeez there’s a ghost or something attacking the ball. That’s not good.
It's the demons!
I have no idea what’s going on.
Neither does Mai's classmates
Oh jeez Mai has her sword out.
Oh boy
Mai does look slightly insane doing this.
It's highly inappropriate out of context
Yeah Mai’s not gonna be able to explain this one.
Mai...

Who's worse: This guy or the student council president from Fruits Basket?
Easily this guy. It's barely a competition
1
u/Holofan4life 3h ago
I dunno. The Fruits Basket guy was mean to Momiji but gave Yuki a pass because he was his favorite. This guy here doesn't seem to have any biases.

I think that's cute
Speaking of very important plot points...
What are your thoughts on Sayuri being sent flying by the demons at the school Ball?
that's definitely worrying
This is like Mai's worst fears materializing because she was worried of Sayuri getting hurt.
What are your thoughts on Mai destroying the school and everyone seeing her do it?
Yeah that seems hard to explain
You don't think "Demons were attacking the school" is believable? :P

u/DivineEternal1 1d ago
That angel doll has wings that looks suspiciously close to a certain backpack.
He's remembering things about Uguu.
He's right, you mentioned ghosts more than he did.
Nayuki is a cutie, but I don't ship cousins, so...
Haha, how old did she think Nayuki is? Or maybe, how old was she thinking she was? And she's actually thinking it's worth it for the kids meals. Granted, the kids meals in Japan can be pretty good.
Nayuki at breakfast, haha.
Mai is actually seriously using the code words for 'yes' and 'no' Yuuichi told her to use last episode.
Don't tell Yuuichi to not hold back. He'll go for it just to get a reaction apparently. Brain freeze deserved though.
That's a lot of medicine...
Hmm... she's a Misaka. Now where have we heard that name before?
What kind of outfit is that to wear to a dance?
Kaori, you had a reaction after being asked about Shiori. Something's up.
Yuuichi getting Mai to 'nod' by lifting the food up and down quickly.
"Would you like dinner, a bath, or me?" Is the joke, I believe.
Yuuichi really wanted to get the angel doll. Begging for money from adorable chibi Nayuki.
The art in this version really sells the dresses better. A shame we didn't get to see Makoto in a wedding dress, even if the veil was pretty. Or Sayuri in one later...
Mai reacted to a joke!
Class prez finally appears!
"I want you, Yuuichi." You go Mai.
Sayuri being happy for her two problem children. And look, they really can dance! Did we see some smiles on Mai there?
Where was she hiding a freakin' sword?
Tons of things breaking and flying around, people thrown to the ground. Mai nowhere near them and didn't have a sword yet, "MaI, WhY aRe YoU doInG thiS!!!!!!111!!1!
Thoughts on Shiori's surname is the same as Kaori Misaka?
How common is the name? Also, Kaori is hiding something fo' realz.
What are your thoughts on Yuuichi buying Ayu a little angel doll when they were kids?
He knew Uguu was having a hard time and wanted to get something she would like.
What are your thoughts on Sayuri being sent flying by the demons at the school Ball?
Darth Vader noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
What are your thoughts on Mai destroying the school and everyone seeing her do it?
Unless she's got supernatural abilities, how could she have done that? I guess the girl with the sword and a past rapsheet is an easy person to finger point to over the supernatural, though.

u/Holofan4life 1d ago
Ayu is definitely not making it easier on her getting people to think she's not a little girl.
Two things that stood out to me with episode is how cute Mai is with her reactions to Yuuichi's antics and also Kitagawa's increased involvement during this arc. I like him as a sort of goofball who isn't afraid of making themselves look like a fool.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 20th/25th anniversary rewatch of Kanon.
Uguu!
This is a continuation of the Air rewatch and that series celebrating its 20th anniversary last year. Kanon is more known than Air, but obviously not as well known as Clannad, all three of which are visual novels made by Key.
For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the 2002 series as well as the 2006 series. The 2006 series is considered the better of the two series, but who else is gonna do a rewatch of 2002 Kanon? I’ve actually never seen anything of Kanon so this gives me the chance of contrast them. I know there’s a girl who says Uguu, but other than that I’m going in completely blind.
Maybe this will all lead to the Clannad 20th anniversary rewatch. Don’t hold me on that.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the sub, by the way.
It's supposed to rain today. How fun :]
Inside a dream
Echoes incessantly like ripples on the water.
Shigure?
This is clearly Ayu, not Shigure
Ayu seeing an angel doll from a crane machine.
This is a flashback and she's with Yuuichi.
He can't get it :(
Ayu says she's just glad he tried really hard.
Yuuichi wakes up
He sees Ayu up as well
Ayu freaks out after Yuuichi mentions ghosts.
"When you talk about ghosts, you summon ghosts!"
Sure...
Her outfit looks way too big on her.
She has to use the restroom
Or rather, she wants to see the stars.
Maybe both?
As they're on the balcony, Ayu talks about how pretty Nayuki is.
"When I grow up, I wonder if I'll be pretty like Nayuki."
Mayhaps
Yuuichi teasing Ayu now
I love these two
Breakfast time
Nayuki all eepy
I love the noises she makes
Yuuichi and Nayuki heading off
Or rather, Nayuki is heading off?
No, Yuuichi is as well
Ayu says her school lets her attend whenever she wants.
Yuuichi walking with Sayuri and Mai
The school ball is today
Honey bear for yes, ponpoko tanuki for no.
That's a mouthful
Sayuri tells Yuuichi Mai was always this quiet.
Even still, she wanted to befriend her because she felt they were alike.
They are both burdened by things
Huh
Shiori with her ice cream
Yuuichi of course is hanging out with her.
Why does Shiori have all that medicine?
She's like a walking drug pharmacy
Now Yuuichi doing a handstand
Shiori says she wants to go to a ball. Unfortunately, she's supposed to be sick.
"Supposed"
Shiori calls herself a Cinderella who missed her ball.
Yuuichi with some girl
She inquires why Shiori is here
"She hasn't been to school since the opening ceremony of the first semester."
Collapsed on the first day of school
Apparently her family name is Misaka
Isn't that... no...
Kitagawa dressed like Freddie Mercury
Outfit for the ball
He then says he's on the ball committee.
And here I thought that's where Kaori had him by
Kaori unfortunately isn't going
As she leaves, Nayuki mentions how she's changed.
Yuuichi going after her
He asks about Shiori
But she says she doesn't have a little sister.
Well, that was odd
Nayuki tells Yuuichi that Kaori hardly ever talks about her family with her.
Yuuichi eating with Sayuri and Mai
Sayuri gives Yuuichi his tux
Yuuichi is excited to see how they look in their dresses.
At home
Akiko and Ayu are going shopping
Yuuichi watching TV
Guess he has to unwind before he heads out to the ball.
Flashback time
Yuuichi wanting to borrow money from Nayuki.
She allows it
And this lets Yuuichi to buy the angel doll for Ayu.
Nayuki is kinda getting cucked here, no?
Yuuichi is happy Ayu is in better spirits.
Ayu hopes she can forget the sadness.
Yuuichi wakes up
The ball is already underway
Kitagawa being extra exaggerated on stage.
Yuuichi with his tux on
Looking for Mai and Sayuri
There they are
They look super pretty, especially Mai.
Wow, Mai actually shot back
I like that Mai can't handle compliments. Cute.
There's this jackass
Kuze, the student council president
Yuuichi smarting back at him
Kuze warns Mai that if she messes up this event, there will be consequences.
Yuuichi eating the buffet with Mai.
Kitagawa trying to find a partner
Mai wants to dance with Yuuichi
What the hell is the monkey dance, Yuuichi? 😭
Mother's Finest Mickey's Monkey?
Wait, was Yuuichi making a masturbation joke?
Mai tells Yuuichi she wants to be near him.
And so they has dance
Maybe Yuuichi can teach her the monkey dance afterwards
Yuuichi and Mai taking the court
They have very graceful moves
People seem surprised to see Mai like this.
Mai thanks him for everything
But suddenly, a disturbance
It's here
All the windows break
Sayuri got sent flying!
Mai is all horrified
Yuuichi tending to Sayuri
Now Mai has her sword
She starts hitting things
Sayuri coming to
As she is done, the student council president scolds Mai for what she's done.
She's in severe trouble now
Overall, this was a great episode. We furthered things along with the other girls, but it was really all about Mai and the ballroom dance. And what a spectacle it was. Just as it seems like Mai was at the highest of the highs, the demons attacked and she suddenly came crashing down. It's one of the best scenes of the entire series and also really emphasizes Mai's friendship with Sayuri. Mai was all composed until Sayuri got attacked, and when that happened, all bets were off.
Besides that, I like the stuff with the angel doll where we see how Yuuichi got it for Ayu. Presumably this is the special thing she's been talking about, but it was nice to see its origin story. We also used it to continue the trend of Yuuichi prioritizing other girls over Nayuki. Yuuichi using Nayuki's own money to spend on Ayu feels particularly dastardly if not for the fact Yuuichi probably doesn't know how Nayuki feels. The fact we the audience can ascertain makes it the ultimate form of tragic irony.
This is the best episode so far. Great plot advancement, a memorable set piece sequence, and some solid character stuff that further the characters along. Outside of maybe explaining some stuff in further detail, you really can't ask for much more than this.

The thot plickens
What are your thoughts on Yuuichi buying Ayu a little angel doll when they were kids?
A little projection there, eh, Yuuichi?
What are your thoughts on Sayuri being sent flying by the demons at the school ball?
No! Sayuri!
What are your thoughts on Mai destroying the school and everyone seeing her do it?
Well, that's less than ideal

First timer for the 2006 version, subbed
QOTD
I have no non-spoiler thoughts on this.
Cute! Seems like a very thoughtful gift on his part, maybe too much so for such a young child?
Still questioning the ontological state of the demons. Have been doing that since the old series. If they are not real how can they possibly send Sayuri flying? If they are real however why does everybody blame Mai for the damaged furniture? I still don't know what to think on this one. Why do they blame her when everybody could see Sayuri being thrown when Mai was far away?
See question 3.
