Sayuri is the best wingwoman.

Okay, bro came in clutch there for claiming he asked Mai to do swordplay and didn't tell anyone. And it's him so it's believable he'd forget to tell people. He also apparently doesn't care about been seen as a goof up.

Gonna be honest, the 'Aha' by Sayuri is getting a little annoying.

Don't mess with Sayuri. You'll have to mess with Mai and she doesn't give a crap about getting suspended apparently.

Yuuichi gonna train for demon hunting.

Taking Uguu to fight demons is like gimping yourself because you like a harder challenge.

Mai finally killed one?

Yuuichi's getting a bit too full of himself here. I guess he is frustrated at how little she seems to care.

Sleepy Nayuki is too cute.

Huh... in 2002 the dog is going after Shiori, but here it's just a flashback of the dog causing trouble to no one we see on screen and is the reason Mai and Sayuri meet.

That's a huge plushy.

That sloth plushy is bringing back memories.

Sayuri got played by the salesman's sob story.

Hmm... who could possibly be the boy she was friends with long ago?

Three demons down, two to go? Or just one and three left?

Oh, they're going after Yuuichi? Did he insult them when he was in town as a child? Maybe they'll come as cute girls with amnesia?

What are your thoughts on the student council wanting Mai expelled?

She has a past history and was swinging a sword around, but people admitted that she likely didn't break the windows, so it's BS they kept trying to pin it all on her.

What are your thoughts on Kitagawa saving Mai from expulsion saying she was asked to perform in front of everyone?

Bro trusts Yuuichi and decided he should help his friend. Total chad move in a lake of embarrassing past behavior.

Thoughts on Uguu meeting and interacting with Mai?

We gonna get some mysterious talk or just more Yuuichi teasing Uguu?

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi agreeing to fight demons with Mai?

He wants to help Mai and probably see what the heck these demons are.

What are your thoughts on Mai saying there was a person she knew but they left just like everyone else?

Hmm... do we know a boy a lot of girls met as a child and left without telling them why? Could just be a coincidence...

What are your thoughts on Mai remarking that the demons are also after Yuuichi?

Who isn't after him?

u/Holofan4life 19h ago

Kitagawa is used way better here than in the 2002 anime.

Funny you mention Sayuri's catchphrase. Ayu and Makoto's catchphrases were used way more frequent but I don't think they ever got annoying.

Who isn't after him?

Makoto now...

2

u/DivineEternal1 2h ago

I think I don't like Sayuri's catchphrase it's not really unique as it's just a cute laugh. It was fine at first, but I guess it just doesn't hit the same way the other two do.

Makoto still might come back. Never know with Key stuff.

2

u/Holofan4life 2h ago

I didn't realize it was a catchphrase until you pointed it out lol

1

u/DivineEternal1 1m ago

I didn't realize it at first either as it's just a laugh which is pretty normal compared to Uguu. It is actually a unique and cute laugh at least.

Thoughts on Yuuichi not wanting to tell Nayuki what happened at the ball?

Thoughts on Sayuri thinking the windows breaking is someone's idea of a prank?

Thoughts on Ayu still looking for the thing she lost?

Thoughts on Ayu commenting on what a serious person Mai seems to be?

Thoughts on Yuuichi telling Ayu to use her Uguu powers?

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi telling Mai she has no idea how much he and Sayuri worry about her?

2

u/DivineEternal1 2h ago

Thoughts on Yuuichi not wanting to tell Nayuki what happened at the ball?

She doesn't need the stress? Or he just doesn't want to think about it more than he needs to.

Thoughts on Sayuri thinking the windows breaking is someone's idea of a prank?

Those darn yankees trying to crash a fancy ball.

Thoughts on Ayu still looking for the thing she lost?

She doesn't even remember what she lost. Kinda makes it hard to know where it might even be. But since it's her sanity she lost, I doubt it'll come back.

Thoughts on Ayu commenting on what a serious person Mai seems to be?

They're opposites. One is too serious, the other is a goofball.

Thoughts on Yuuichi telling Ayu to use her Uguu powers?

Purify evil with cuteness and innocence?

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi telling Mai she has no idea how much he and Sayuri worry about her?

I think Mai knows, she just thinks there's something she has to do even if it means ignoring the others.

Thoughts on Yuuichi not wanting to tell Nayuki what happened at the ball?

She doesn't need the stress? Or he just doesn't want to think about it more than he needs to.

Why not both?

Thoughts on Sayuri thinking the windows breaking is someone's idea of a prank?

Those darn yankees trying to crash a fancy ball.

How dare ye?

Thoughts on Ayu still looking for the thing she lost?

She doesn't even remember what she lost. Kinda makes it hard to know where it might even be. But since it's her sanity she lost, I doubt it'll come back.

Damn...

Thoughts on Ayu commenting on what a serious person Mai seems to be?

They're opposites. One is too serious, the other is a goofball.

Both are after something

Thoughts on Yuuichi telling Ayu to use her Uguu powers?

Purify evil with cuteness and innocence?

Could do the trick

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi telling Mai she has no idea how much he and Sayuri worry about her?

I think Mai knows, she just thinks there's something she has to do even if it means ignoring the others.

If anything, Mai cares too much about her friends.

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 17h ago edited 16h ago

I guess unless Mai can prove the existence of demons to others at school she'll always have a hard time defending her acts.

Wait, the demons are targeting Yuuichi? What's the deal with him anyway?

I also wonder who is the long lost friend Mai was talking about.

2

u/Holofan4life 14h ago

It's easy to feel sorry for Mai because we see things from her perspective. But outside of Yuuichi, we may forget nobody else sees thing how she sees it.

I wonder if the mysterious friend is related to Mishio in any way. She too had someone who supposedly walked out on her in her life.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the 20th/25th anniversary rewatch of Kanon.

Uguu!

This is a continuation of the Air rewatch and that series celebrating its 20th anniversary last year. Kanon is more known than Air, but obviously not as well known as Clannad, all three of which are visual novels made by Key.

For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the 2002 series as well as the 2006 series. The 2006 series is considered the better of the two series, but who else is gonna do a rewatch of 2002 Kanon? I’ve actually never seen anything of Kanon so this gives me the chance of contrast them. I know there’s a girl who says Uguu, but other than that I’m going in completely blind.

Maybe this will all lead to the Clannad 20th anniversary rewatch. Don’t hold me on that.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the sub, by the way.

This is thr first episode I've watched in like a couple days. I need to start picking up steam.

Crosswalking

Yuuichi with Nayuki

She asks if anything happened at the ball.

Yuuichi tries to downplay it

There's Kitagawa

He's gotta go to the student council office.

Dealing with the aftermath of what happened.

The student council president wants Mai expelled.

Oh nos

Yuuichi at school

Sayuri is talking to the student council president.

Sayuri points out the windows broke before Mai started swinging her sword.

Yuuichi barging in now

He says what she was doing was an attraction.

Sure, Jan

Now Kitagawa says she asked to perform.

Based Kitagawa common W

And so Mai is safe from expulsion. Kitagawa saved the day.

Sayuri expressing her gratitude towards him.

As he leaves, she remarks what a good friend he is.

Yuuichi asking Sayuri about the injury.

Sayuri thinks the windows breaking is someone's idea of a prank.

That's a prank so dangerous, you'd almost thought it was Makoto's.

Mai is here

Yuuichi tells Mai Sayuri saved her from being expelled.

I mean, it was Kitagawa but we'll roll with it.

In class now

Shiori outside

Yuuichi talking to her

He says she made the right call by not going.

No kidding

Even still, Shiori wishes she had went.

Yuuichi talking about Kaori now

Shiori is insistent she's related to Kaori.

As Shiori leaves, he tells her he wants to take her out somewhere since she didn't attend the ball.

A promise

Kaori looking from afar

Yuuichi eating lunch with Sayuri and Mai.

There's the student council president as they're now out in the hallway.

The next time Mai causes trouble, she's expelled. End of story.

"If you ever hurt Sayuri, I'll never forgive you."

Isn't that technically a threat?

Mai is terrifying when it comes to her friends.

Yuuichi outside swinging a sword

Mai

Yuuichi says he's gonna work with her to take out the demons.

Mai seems okay with this idea

In the middle of town now

Ayu joins him

Taiyaki time

Looking for the thing she lost

Ayu says she loves her school

Yuuichi wants Ayu to come with him tonight.

At school now

Ayu is with Yuuichi

She gets introduced to Mai

I don't believe they met in the 2001 anime so this is pretty cool.

Uguu counter: 57

Things are quiet. Almost too quiet.

Uguu counter: 58

Ayu commenting on what a serious person Mai seems to be.

Mai says she can't say anything as far as what Ayu is looking for.

Would be meaningless if she found it for her.

Uguu counter: 59

Uguu counter: 60

I like Yuuichi telling Ayu to use her Uguu powers.

Mai caresses Ayu's head

Yuuichi alone with Mai

Mai wishes Yuuichi good luck on Ayu.

She suddenly senses something

Yuuichi charging at it

Mai takes one out

Four left now

Mai telling Yuuichi to mind his own business.

She leaves because she thinks they're done for tonight.

Yuuichi tells Mai she has no idea how much he and Sayuri worry about her.

"Sayuri and I both care for you a lot!"

Even still, she dips out

Back at home

Yuuichi looking at Nayuki all tired at the dinner table.

Very eepy person

Heading to school now and Nayuki doesn't even notice it.

Yuuichi eating lunch with Sayuri and Mai.

He tells Sayuri the two of them are fighting.

Yuuichi now asks how did she and Mai become friends.

She says they were first year students.

Mau attacked a dog that terrorized the school campus.

But then she fed the dog so all's good.

Sayuri got to know Mai as she was feeding the dog.

And now, Yuuichi the dog feeds Mai.

Yuuichi with Sayuri alone now

Tomorrow is Mai's birthday

Sayuri wants to pick a present for her.

In the middle of town now

Do all the characters hang out here?

Also, Sayuri regularly refers to herself in the third person.

Sayuri recounts Mai buying flowers for her for her birthday last year.

That is a massive anteater plushie.

Three years ago, around the time Sayuri and Mai first met.

Sayuri has to buy it

Walking now

Sayuri brings up Mai's mother

She apparently lives with her

Mai, I mean, not Sayuri

Damn, Sayuri is gonna carry the anteater all the way back?

Yuuichi at school with Mai

Mai says there used to be a person she knew.

"But the person left... Just like everyone else."

Damn

A sound

They're here

I guess Mai and Yuuichi are back on the same page.

Yuuichi getting his ass kicked

This is a pretty well animated sequence.

Mai says the demons are also after him.

"Yuuichi... who are you?"

Overall, this was a very well done episode. We have the fallout of the ball stuff as well as Yuuichi now working alongside Mai. We also furthered the other stuff going on in particular the Ayu plot point. I like seeing her interact with Mai.

This was a solid episode that while cut and dry had a lot of moving parts and furthered things along quite well. Probably one of the weaker ones in a while, but this show has a pretty strong baseline compared to most other shows.

What are your thoughts on the student council wanting Mai expelled?

D:

What are your thoughts on Kitagawa saving Mai from expulsion saying she was asked to perform in front of everyone?

:D

Good guy Kitagawa

Thoughts on Ayu meeting and interacting with Mai?

Pretty cool. They didn't interact in the previous adaptation.

What are your thoughts on Yuuichi agreeing to fight demons with Mai?

Of course he would. He's not the type to let his friends down.

What are your thoughts on Mai saying there was a person she knew but they left just like everyone else?

Mai...

What are your thoughts on Mai remarking that the demons are also after Yuuichi?

Well, that's definitely troublesome

First Timer

I guess it’s the next morning now.

Definitely sounds like Mai is in trouble.

Nice of Sayuri to come there to support Mai.

Man, this student council president is such a tool.

Yuichi’s excuse is very unconvincing lol

Thanks for covering Kitagawa.

Yuichi is trying to find the mysterious window breaker now.

More talking with Shiori. Very mysterious girl.

Shiori allegedly says that there’s another unrelated Kaori Misaka at her school. I feel like that’s a lie.

Shiori is definitely a ghost, right?

Kuze is so comically a jerk.

Oh hey Ayu’s back.

Ayu apparently goes to school in the forest. That’s suspicious.

Ayu meets Mai now. That’s neat.

Yuichi is way too mean to Ayu sometime.

Another demon attack.

Still not sure what they’re supposed to be exactly on account of them being invisible.

I like Yuichi trying to get Mai to listen to him. He’s a bit harsh but I see he wants to help.

Yucihi says him and Mai are fighting. Seems pretty one sided though.

Apparently there was a wolf or something at school in the past? That’s wild.

That giant anteater is so cute. I love it.

Yuichi is wrong. Anteaters are so cute.

Yuicihi’s got a sword now

The demons were after Yuichi. That’s a very interesting detail. I look forward to seeing this expanded upon.

I'm very busy today but I'll try to respond to both today and yesterday's questions when I can

2

I guess it’s the next morning now.

It's morning again in dream world

Definitely sounds like Mai is in trouble.

That sucks

Nice of Sayuri to come there to support Mai.

Indeed

Man, this student council president is such a tool.

We're not seeing things from his perspective. Mai kinda trashed the school.

Yuichi’s excuse is very unconvincing lol

For real

Thanks for covering Kitagawa.

This is why Kaori should be with him

Yuichi is trying to find the mysterious window breaker now.

"One of us is responsible for this!" -- Yuuichi says as Mai holds a sword in an octopus shaped hot dog costume

More talking with Shiori. Very mysterious girl.

Indeed

Shiori allegedly says that there’s another unrelated Kaori Misaka at her school. I feel like that’s a lie.

I didn't get that impression. I feel like Kaori is the one who's lying.

Shiori is definitely a ghost, right?

It would be funny given Ayu’s comments about summoning ghosts when you talk about them.

Kuze is so comically a jerk.

As opposed to Yuuichi who's a caring jerk.

Oh hey Ayu’s back.

Uguu!

Ayu apparently goes to school in the forest. That’s suspicious.

Are there any girls in this show who's normal?

Ayu meets Mai now. That’s neat.

This is cool because it wasn't in the 2002 anime.

Yuichi is way too mean to Ayu sometime.

She's just fun to tease

Another demon attack.

That's not good

Still not sure what they’re supposed to be exactly on account of them being invisible.

Maybe they're the ghosts?

I like Yuichi trying to get Mai to listen to him. He’s a bit harsh but I see he wants to help.

Him caring about these characters who are clearly going through stuff makes me care about him.

Yucihi says him and Mai are fighting. Seems pretty one sided though.

I'd let Mai win if I was fighting her

Apparently there was a wolf or something at school in the past? That’s wild.

Nope, just a cute doggo

That giant anteater is so cute. I love it.

Good friends

Yuichi is wrong. Anteaters are so cute.

He also originally didn't think Piro was cute.

Yuicihi’s got a sword now

Oh boy

The demons were after Yuichi. That’s a very interesting detail. I look forward to seeing this expanded upon.

My question is the demons obviously existed before Mai met Yuuichi. So, what changed?

I'm very busy today but I'll try to respond to both today and yesterday's questions when I can

Sounds good. Take all the time you want.

"One of us is responsible for this!" -- Yuuichi says as Mai holds a sword in an octopus shaped hot dog costume

Is that a reference to I Think You Should Leave? lol

More than likely

What are your thoughts on Mai remarking that the demons are also after Yuuichi?

That's concerning

First Timer for the 2006 version, subbed

QOTD

  1. Due to certain circumstances (her being cute, socially inept, a deuteragonist{important character at least} and my belief that the demons are actually real) I am 100% on her side. F the student council!

  2. He's a good guy deep down just a bit of a goof(I wonder why?) so it's very fitting. I also don't much like the gag where he is under Kaori's thumb (but I can see where he is coming from with how glamorous she is) so it is nice seeing him in a more assertive role.

  3. Cute and it makes me even more curious about Mai's supernatural knowledge.

  4. Expected. He does everything for the people he cares about. He WILL fight supernatural entities without a second thought if you're important to him.

  5. VERY interested in this bit. We haven't gotten enough deep lore for this world and it's making me antsy. Especially the "just live everyone else" part seem to fit perfectly with what Mishio alluded to when Makoto was nearing her end. Gimme more!

  6. Same thoughts as Q5.

2

u/Holofan4life 3h ago

I like the Kitagawa Kaori subservient gag because it's almost like Kaori going "Sure, whatever". It's like she doesn't know he exists which I think is funnier than if she were to take advantage of his generosity.

I still have faith in the show in delivering a massive lore drop. We've already got teases of it and it doesn't come off to me like we're treading water. There's always some development that helps advance the plot.

Nah, she almost comes off as using him if not that directly she is at least taking advantage of his generosity and his infatuation towards her, I cannot approve of this behavior.

2

u/Holofan4life 2h ago

I guess I don't find it as extreme as it could be. Maybe if we saw more of it I might feel differently.
