Questions & Discussion 3D modeling

Hi everyone! šŸ‘‹ I’m currently using Maya, but I’m still learning the 3D modeling side of it. Where do you recommend taking online classes with a real instructor (not YouTube tutorials)? Or is there another 3D modeling software that’s more beginner-friendly, intuitive, and faster to learn? I’d love to hear your recommendations and personal experiences. Thanks! 😊

Questions & Discussion WIP: do you sculpt fabric displacement in ZBrush and bake it, or use Substance Painter?

Post image

Working on a utility vest for a character and I’m trying to lock down my pipeline for the fabric detail before I go further. The screenshot shows the current state of the weave in ZBrush at high subdivision, with the pocket stitching and the seam lines.

How I do it right now:
I sculpt the fabric displacement directly in ZBrush, using a mix of alphas and manual cleanup around the seams, pockets and folds. Then I bake it down to a normal/displacement map on the low-poly mesh. The upside is that the weave follows the folds and the stretch of the garment, so it looks natural around the chest and the pocket flaps. The downsides are a heavy scene, long project times, and the weave scale drifting between pieces (the vest, the sleeves and the pockets don’t always match).

What I’m considering:
Doing the fabric detail in Substance Painter with tileable height maps and alphas instead, and keeping only the large forms and wrinkles in ZBrush. That would keep the scale consistent and make it easy to change later, but I worry it will look flat and ā€œstampedā€ without the stretching and compression you get from sculpting.

What I’d like to know:

  • Do you sculpt the fabric weave in ZBrush and bake it, or do it in Substance Painter?
  • If you do both, where do you split it? For example, wrinkles in ZBrush and the micro-weave in Painter?
  • How do you keep weave scale consistent across different garment pieces?
  • How do you handle UV stretch and seams with tileable fabric maps?
  • For game characters, do you bake displacement to normal maps only, or keep real displacement or tessellation?

Would love to hear your pipelines, and any workflow videos or breakdowns are welcome too. Thanks!

Although the modern world is full of uncertainty, this personal project is something I turn to for solace amid the challenges of today.

It harks back to a time when things were made by people, for people - whether it’s a traditional century-old window frame or a video game with hand painted graphics.
I hope that, as you contemplate my work, you will manage to escape from the routine for a moment and immerse yourself in a nostalgic and magical world within you!

Initial concept, texture overpaints - Photoshop
Blockout, modelling, UV unwrap and retopology - Blender
Sculpt - Zbrush
Baking - Substance Painter

I would be really happy if more people will see my work, hope you'll enjoy it!

Days 10 thru 15. Doing the toon shaders on the last one was tedious, but I’m learning more about shading nodes in blender. Getting more use out of the sparkly shaders here, and a little more uv work with the umbrella and canvas. Halfway through the month now! I’d post a wireframe but honestly once all the modifiers are applied it’s just black :V

Thank you!

Questions & Discussion Is it ethical to sell mentorship by giving struggling artists false hope?

Thumbnail

I saw a well-known industry veteran post about how there are still plenty of jobs in character art and that people shouldn’t give up. His next post promoted his mentorship.

I’m all for encouraging artists to keep going, but I think we need to be honest about the state of the industry. I worked at PlayStation and got laid off, and even some of my former leads and supervisors have struggled to find work since.

There’s nothing wrong with promoting mentorships, but painting the industry as if everything is fine, only to sell hope to struggling artists, feels a little sketchy.

Yes, you can find work, but not everyone has the financial stability to spend months or years trying. Some have families and bills to worry about.
I want artists to keep chasing their dreams, but they deserve honesty just as much as they deserve hope.

Art Help & Critique There’s something I don’t like about how my character’s face looks up close, yet I can’t seem to put my finger on it.

My first guess would be that I need some more anatomy practice. I used MetaHuman as a starting point and then used it as a basemesh to turn it into something more stylized. It can make the process easier, but still requires some good knowledge in anatomy. Also, this was the first time I tried to turn a MetaHuman into a stylized character.

Another guess of mine would be the shaders. I’ve only been using Unreal Engine for about a year and tried using a little stylization technique I partially learned from a SIGGRAPH panel last year. The outlines are where I’m having the most issue.

One more guess would be her expression, which might be related to the rig.

Questions & Discussion Lighting with handpainted textures

Hello! i've been messing with handpainted textures lately and some things really confuses me

  1. How do i approach 3D light sources? should i not use any light at all and manually paint my shadows and reflections? if so, how do i make something with dynamic light like a lamp or fire?

    1. What's the best approach to make game assets and use it in UE for example, should i also use normal maps? just the diffuse map is enough? and how do i approach materials and shaders?
