META Why are ABCDs and indians on reddit especially so self hating?
Racism towards indians is definitely prevalent on most platforms, and apart from X I use most of them. I find it easier to avoid on other platforms personally because the algorithm just does not show me the racist content, while in reddit it is never totally avoidable on any subreddit (although instagram and youtube probably have much more racist content, my algorithm just does not show it to me).
But even then, what I have noticed is that ABCDs on other platforms run the gamut from being completely self loathing to being more or less fine. There are also many more south asian content creators on other apps who are fine with being south asian, whilst here on reddit any time I see an ABCD or indian posting outside this subreddit (and including this subreddit to an extent) it is just filled with self loathing. I'm not saying this does not occur on other platforms, but reddit in particular seems to just be self loathing and not much else. Even insta with all its racism has normal indians. I don't really understand why.

i’m not but i noticed in this sub people are very emotional and constantly in some kind of conflict with themselves or others.
the posts are almost always boarderline mental health related like they are stressed out or something.

A lifetime of being hated tends to do that.

u/Cd206 Aug 05 '26
This is a lame defeatist attitude IMO, go enjoy your life, mean comments online which are shoved into your face due to social media algorithms that bias for engagement does is not equal to "a lifetime of being hated"

Who said anything about online comments? I’m talking about real life experiences.
But hey you do you

r/splendidabrown is such a joke, brown women on that sub should just get over their self-hatred and bleach their skin white - that loss is only a net positive to the desi community

Splendida Brown is a femcel sub. They don't seem to hate being South Asian as much as they do not like South Asian men. It's not particularly more insightful than any incel community. Just people who decided to go down an extreme victimization rabbit hole (not to take away from some who may have experienced real trauma). As a dude it's an interesting read but many there seem to have serious issues.
I used to enjoy the Brown History substack but a lot of the content is very Splendida Brown-esque now and there have been allegations of AI generated content also. It's a feedback loop of brown men are spoiled, privileged, immature manchildren while brown women are the noble self sacrificial and underappreciated who pick up their slack.
Dont get me wrong there are major issues with patriarchy and misogyny in our cultures but the narrative is extremely reductive. Don't be calling me and my brothers "children" and our wives the "parents" when we all fulfill key obligations to keep our relationships and living spaces functional.
The outrage clickbait gender war narratives are a real put off. Let's have mature conversations about patriarchal attitudes in our culture that lead to tangible improvements in access to oppurtunity and freedom rather than rolling in the mud of dismissiveness and spite.

I dunno, you can look at yesterdays thread the last time this was asked: https://www.reddit.com/r/ABCDesis/comments/1vf9ljn/i_am_proud_to_be_indian/

Internalized racism. I’ve grown up hating it with a passion, especially after all the Kash Patel lookalike comments I’ve gotten and growing up with anger and accountability issues galore

u/WolfGuptaofficial Aug 06 '26
psy ops that have conditioned them to have internalised racism
the racist botnets only further this to an extreme extent

How many people post when things are peachy? This sub also serves as a safe space to vent.

Because they consume negative media. Algorithms control them. They need to focus IRL.

Your post/comment was removed because it breaks Rule 3: No Trolling/Brigading. This includes popular topics of toxic masculinity, white worshiping discussions, religious slander, 'FOBs' vs 'ABCDs' topics.
Brigading from hate subs will also result in bans. These subs can be incel to political extremist in nature.
Posters who have extensive posting and comment history on South Asia based subreddits with little to no post history on r/ABCDesis will be regarded as brigading without prior clearance from a mod. This is to protect the intended audience of r/ABCDesis

those who have born and lived outside being self hating makes sense to an extent. we have been through some things which can sometimes impact some people’s perception of their own race and make them want to dissociate from it
indians being self hating though, especially here on reddit, seems to be a way to seek western validation

I feel like those who keep asking this question in posts are actually more sensitive. And self hating than those people that you are pointing at.
Because when people complain about something you take it as it is. A complaint. But attaching all sorts of implications to the the whole race/ culture etc are done only by those like OP who are looking for people to blame. To point finger at for issues that they are facing that may be brought on by themselves.
Stop this blame game OP. It's definitely not constructive.

u/Hour_Corner4261 Aug 05 '26
Dude you're the one who's not being constructive. There are so many Indians on this subreddit and other ones who make statements about the whole race/culture and people like OP are just pointing it out. You're the kind of person they're talking about.

I’ll catch some flack for this but this subreddit is just rife with people who are extreme leftists and/or live outside the bounds of either cultural and societal normalcy.
Self hatred is a common trait amongst both demographics.

idk where ppl get the idea that this subreddit is very leftist because as a marxist i feel there aren't very many at all and most ppl here are either liberals (unless thats who you mean?) or more rw lol

u/gnpking Aug 05 '26
Perhaps it’s a case of a loud majority, but left leaning ideas tend to be disproportionately represented on here compared to the real life conversations I’ve had with Desi folk. I also see a lot more non-heterosexual Desi people on here than I’ve ever met in real life.
I would say the average Desi I’ve met is either a centrist or right leaning (pre-MAGA republican). I have a pretty big sample size to back that up given my line of work and the area in which I live.

What is wrong with our educational system
You cannot draw reliable conclusions about large populations based exclusively on your "personal experience" .
This is particularly annoying when there is clear data on how desi's have traditionally voted in the United States.

u/naramsin-ii punjabi-palestinian Aug 05 '26
can i ask what left leaning ideas you're referring to? because as a leftist desi im genuinely quite surprised by this ngl

It's the sad unfortunate reality. I know so many Pakistanis that voted for Trump cause they didn't wanna vote for Kamala cause she was Indian woman. Even my own Father who's not educated enough voted for Trump thinking that it would help free Imran Khan. I live like 15 minutes down the street from Harvard & I swear I've never seen anything like it. I have a Brother who thinks he's an influencer & any time I say something about the Republicans or Trump he always brings up the facts how the democrats are corrupt. Truth be told these type of Pakistani people just don't belong in the US with their mindset.

Lmao far from it. I remember one time my brother told me only a few good Indian people existed in this world while he claimed to have Arab & Persian ancestry. It's not just Indians doing this. I'm just saying there's plenty of self hatred within the Desi community. Right wing Pakistanis should be held on the same wave length as the Indian ones. It's pretty much oh I don't fuck with your kind meme even though they both look exactly a like.

lol what? You mean like this?
https://www.reddit.com/r/ABCDesis/s/piOBQ46nmo
I think you got it the other way around.
The left leaning crowd here critique the hypocrisy surrounding our culture. That’s not what right wingers here do lol including so called self proclaimed centrists. The common themes with the latter group is they tend to be religious and focus everything on that narrative only when it comes to desi culture

u/gnpking Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26
Lmaoooooo I’m not even going to dignify this with a response. All I’ll say is if all you can offer is “critiques” of your culture and wish it was more aligned with western ideals, you, by definition, hate your own culture.
