POLITICS Indians need to stop buying Teslas, stop funding Musk

There's a direct correlation between Musk taking over Twitter and increase in blatant/casual racism against Indians and minorities/immigrants in general. Musk is an evil piece of shit who gave a platform to the worst people on the planet under the guise of "free speech" , many of whom target Indians specifically. Fuck that guy , please stop giving him your money!

POLITICS Zohran Mamdani is carrying the image of Indians in 2026 and he is from Uganda

Zohran Mamdani checks all of the boxes for good representation in the public psyche. He is the mayor of the most influential city in the world. He is South Asian, he wears his South Asian identity with self-respect. He has a lot of charm to sway the crowd. He is good looking to the public psyche. He knows how to talk to people in the white house, he knows how to talk to CEO business owners, he knows how to talk to the far right on Fox News. Even Fox News is obsessed with him more than any other Democrat at the moment. He knows how to talk to restaurant workers, NBA players, normal ball players in New York. He is currently with Nas, who is a Hip Hop image, and both of them are working on more Hip Hop schools to revive it since New York was the birth place of it. He knows how to talk to immigrant first generation workers in Taxi businesses and many Uber drivers as well. He is against corporate greed on average and is a fan of Bernie Sanders. He honestly checks more boxes than any US politician at all, let alone any South Asian politician.

POLITICS Hot take, but the h1b debate is just racism

I don't think anyone would give a flying fuck if most of the visas went to, say German or British engineers immigrating and doing the exact same line of work. Conservatives would probably hold it up as a model of what "good immigration" looks like.

POLITICS You can dislike Mamdani for his politics but you can't deny that he doesn't shy away from his heritage and represents it well during the time anti indian sentiment is rampant .

Plenty of other indian politicians in the the US shy away from mentioning their heritage or try to go an extra mile to talk about how americaninized they are . I believe Bobby Jindal, Harris and Halley are Christians and the later's son is extremely maga and prejudiced towards indians lmao .

The less we talk about Kash patel , Ramaswamy or Amul Thappar in this regard the better .. Then you have Mamdani who couldn't care less what ppl say about Indians , infact he doubled down during the primaries and campaigned quite a bit in Hindi/Urdu.

Even as mayor he has posted a few reels talking with desi New Yorkers. It gives a lot of ammo to the racists but my man absolutely doesn't care about that . At the time when indians face racism and prejudice from even the so called " progressive" folks it's a big deal to do so .

I was appalled to hear her thoughts.. I feel so sad for her because her own father who look very much Indian or even her could be easily racially profiled anywhere in America.. she should be fighting for immigrants rights and not otherwise.

I am beyond shocked and disgusted to say the least.. and low key feel sorry for her

POLITICS Do Indian Americans realize theres more to living in the US than earning money and mere tax breaks?

Amidst the season of racism it baffles me as to how a section of Indian Americans and particularly the millennials who have drinking Republican Kool-aid for years and parroting their talking points on economy and immigration even when the party was being taken over by openly racist influencer class. I had a chat with a gujju-American friend of mine who didnt mind racism against Indians as it didnt affect them and was batting for Trump. This was in 2024. And now in 2026 if you are an Indian American and still a Republican you must be some one who has a humiliation kink. Nothing explains why youre supportive of a party that openly hates you.

But, the larger question is why are Indian-Americans so obsessed with money and look at life solely from the prism of how to earn more ? No wonder as a group we have no skin in the game as everyone is so myopic with no sense of community.

The racist attacks those UT Austin students endured due to being brown and Indian makes me furious that so many Indian American continue to look the other way because they love Republican tax breaks. It's pathetic.

POLITICS South Asian Conservatives - what motivates your political alignment?

This isn't about judging your alignment, I’m genuinely curious. I’m speaking more in terms of modern western conservatism which is what is dominating the right wing of American politics. I understand conservatism in Canada and the UK is slightly different but there are still some underlying themes which carry through. But for the sake of discussion, let’s focus on America because it’s become a bit of an indicator and barometer of where other right-wing movements have begun moving globally.

Given modern conservative thought has become more and more steeped in social and religious issues and is based more and more on evangelical influences and less on political and economic conservatism such as small government and lower taxes and restrained fiscal policies / governance, what attracts you to this as a base for your way of living your life or who you date / marry or how you vote?

POLITICS Unfollowed all “I’m just a brown girl” content creators

A number of creators - Shreya Chowdhury, Tanya S, Aviva M, Jully Patel, Shivani Bafna, Svarini, Ancisocial, ancytwinkle, Diipa Khosla, etc - to name a few, only post about their Indian identity when it comes to benefiting from it. They just want to sell us things under the name of India. I love that they promote Indian culture and are proud of their identity but that’s only as long as it profits them and cuz it’s trendy. None of them have used their platform to actually talk about what’s going on in India. Instead they’ve continued to talk about what’s makeup products we should buy or the new influencer event that they’re going to. Using your identity for a platform and having that platform comes with a huge responsibility. If they’ve shared one vague story it’s not enough, they need to be doing more so global audiences are aware. Truly disappointing. Just having the flag in your bio and not using you 1.5 Million followers to have actual conversations is not enough.

These two creators are ABDs and explain it very well:

EDIT: I’m not trying to pin point these specific creators, these are the ones that came to mind within this category of influencers. Aviva has since posted a TikTok and I appreciate her taking constructive feedback.

POLITICS Will we ever see a developed, rich India in our lifetimes? Like China has become?

India’s economy is growing extremely fast, right now it’s at 8% annual GDP growth per year.

Obviously India has its problems, but it’s able to maintain democracy, a functional government, and a growing economy.

Meanwhile, Pakistan is unfortunately ruled by a military junta who’ve imprisoned their one politician who isn’t corrupt (Imran Khan), and Bangladesh is ripe with civil unrest and political instability

China has really turned things around the past 2 decades, it went from one of the poorest countries per capita to now having the biggest economy (PPP)

Do you guys think India can do the same?

POLITICS To the people who say Zohran doesn't ID with being Indian, have you heard his rap "Nani"

He went by the name Mr. Cardamom. Lmao

I feel like some algorithms with push certain things over others but I felt like it was pretty clear that he identified with being Indian (before even knowing about the song). I've seen articles and headlines mention it.

As someone who was raised Hindu, I don't think him identifying with being Muslim detracts from being Indian. He was literally told by well meaning brown uncles that if he ran, he should avoid mentioning his religion due to the fear of backlash. Him being OPEN about his identity and STILL winning despite Islamophobic smear campaigns is HUGE. And in NYC where 9/11 happened. Sometimes being bashed for an important part of your identity makes you want to lean into it more

Just my thoughts on what I've seen thus far but I'm open to hearing other perspectives

POLITICS Westerners lack any nuance on India

So I live in the US. I was talking with my colleagues during lunch, and the topic veered to the protest that happened at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. And regarding issues with education and problems in general. I wasn't comfortable with it, but I never shy away from it either. One white colleague was like, "All of India's problem is due to the caste system". I have heard enough of it online, so I went with it and said, "True. What do you think about the caste system ?"

He goes on to explain the most dystopian fan fiction of what the caste system is. I was cringing inside. And other colleagues were adding their bits to the story. They were looking at me to see if I acknowledged or approved. I was nodding at it just so that they wouldn't stop their ramble.

One guy chimes in, " Why haven't they banned the caste system yet, <my name>? That would have made India much better by now ". I reply, " I am not sure".

PS: The caste system has been officially banned in India since 1950. But like any social issue, it persists in rural and underdeveloped areas. Like how a ban on segregation didn't automatically remove racism and profiling. Or like saying Gun violence in the US is due to segregation.

I am absolutely against caste system discrimination, and it should cease to exist, but their half truth fictious version of it, like it was some alien invasion movie, made me laugh internally.

POLITICS Here’s How Racism has Impacted me in Toronto

Throw Away account, for obvious reasons.

I know there are more American Desis in this subreddit than Canadian (from what I can tell). And people are curious about how racism has impacted people in Canada, so I thought I’d share some of my experiences. There are many other incidents, but these are the most memorable:

  1. Had a random person bump me while I was walking on the sidewalk and insult me and get me to fight them;

  2. Had a man, riding a bike at high park, say: “fucking Indians” while passing me (presumably because I was on the road while he blew past me going 30km/h).

  3. Have been sworn at while walking home, holding a pizza and looking at my phone (people probably thought I was an uber delivery guy).

  4. Have been sworn at on a Sunday morning while dropping packages off to UPS (people probably thought I was a delivery person?)

  5. Have had someone (during COVID) try to get into a physical altercation with me for not leaving my cart where I should have (I left it exactly where store employees told me to leave it) and accuse me of not following societal norms.

  6. Have had a women say to me: (regarding the Ukrainian War) I can’t believe this is happening, they look just like us.

Have heard tons of comments from white “liberals” in this city tell me how they hate international students, how they want to see Indians deported, how they hate living in Milton because of all the Indians in her neighbourhoods who hate her dog and complain about her dogs. I’ve heard white people go on tirades about how they HATE uber drivers because they are “pests” and “infesting” toronto. I’ve had people tell me that they would never live in Brampton for XYZ reason (yes - they are using Brampton as a proximate for Indians). Had a guy tell me he had to leave Brampton because his wife was being harassed by “international students” daily (fuck off - I doubt that’s true at all). I won’t even get into: “Indians only hire Indians”; Indians are stealing all the jobs; “Indians are all destroying Canada”; “Indians are ruining the rental market by living 20 to 1 bedroom”; “Indians are ruining the job market”.

Anytime you talk about Crime, it’s blamed on Indians. Indians are always featured in the media. Even though the majority of serious crimes (sex assaults, gun crimes, etc) are not committed by Indians but are committed by other communities. Had someone shout that Indians were pedophiles.

When other communities commit crime, their names/descriptions aren’t published in the Media, but Indian’s are plastered in the news all the time.

LOTS of Media attention when its an international indian student who gets in trouble, but none when other communities commmit crimes.

These are trump hating people that we’re talking about… not right wing crazies.

And to those who think that this hate is targeted towards Indians only? Nope… Uber drivers are Indians, but they are also Pakistani, Bangladeshi, African. They all just get lumped in as “Indian” and hated on for whatever reason. The “Indians” in Milton? Pakistani and mostly Muslim communities in that area.

Just thought I’d share. And for reference, I was born and raised in Canada. I’m not a “fob” - no accent, I don’t dress, look or act like fobs.

That’s why solidarity is important.

POLITICS thoughts on birthright citizenship?

What do you guys think of birthright citizenship potentially being cancelled on Monday if the Supreme Court rules in favor of the Trump administration?

I'm assuming a lot of you were born as US citizens, even if your parents were not US citizens/H1Bs.

How do you normally perceive birthright citizenship in terms of potential competition for jobs/school/university spots/other resources, etc.?

Personally, I think birthright citizenship is good for America. We are already facing demographic decline, with the number of teens that could potentially go to university declining and a lot of colleges are shutting down. Having children born here naturalized as American citizens at birth is good for us socially and economically in the long term.

America is also not a welfare state, so even if a kid that was born in America, lived outside of the country and then eventually came back to the country, would not really have access to a lot of benefits in the first place.

Update: SCOTUS ruled. Birthright citizenship is fundamental of all rights and shall live.
