"junk" shop at the top of George Street 90's/00's
Can anyone remember the name of the 'Junk Shop' near Split the Wind on George Street around the then if the century?
It has a bit of everything - I used to get used x-files VHS tapes and books, but it also had homeware, appliances, new and used curios and random items. It was not as far as I recall a charity shop, just a magic emporium of wonder.
I think it was brown wooden signage with gold lettering and was around the same area as North East Peripherals and the sports strip shop.
I last remember for sure going in there around 2000 or 2001.
Bonus points if you can tell me the door number.
Thanks!

Ideas for today?
Visiting for the weekend and have essentially the full day to nerd out.
Already visited Game district, the video game and vintage toy stores yesterday.
Today's plans include arcadia and potentially lane 7. But I need some more ideas to fill out today

Friendly teenagers
I was just offered fist bumps by 3 kind of intimidating looking teenagers in the city centre as I walked past them, and they said have a good day. Genuinely a nice interaction. I will have a good day now, that was really lovely. More of that please. I was a bit taken by surprise and didn't want to become part of some weird tiktok trend so I didn't really thank them properly. If they see this, nice one lads, made my day.

Wanted events in Aberdeen
I saw the below earlier and got me wondering, what events would people actually like to see in Aberdeen? We've got a massive exhibition centre, and a few smaller venues in town , but we do struggle to have things happen.
For example, I'd like a return of the outdoor markets that used to happen on Belmont Street, Union Terrace, Castle gate etc (obviously when the Castle gate is fixed up), and there was a big video game event about 7 years ago that had developers, universities etc. And TECA to get more acts up here, not just Boyzone or whatever boy band was a thing 30 years ago (and stocks for the brats throwing stones at the buses).

Banchory - Looking to Move back from London and would love locals advise?
Banchory - moving back from London, working remote and love the great outdoors I’ve been viewing properties in the shire but really liked what Banchory has to offer so far, so I need local advice on a few things…
I lived in Aberdeen until I was 10 and finally moving back, but after recent visits to the city I feel the shire would be more suited to my needs.
Is Banchory over all a nice place to live? I remember it being a lovely place as a child but have only visited recently to look at houses for sale, it seems to have a very nice vibe.
Transport isn’t an issue as I’ve a car and motorbike so can travel into the city if I needed too.
what are the schools like (I dont have a child but myself and my partner plan on having a family soon)
Main sticking point is how remote is banchory in the winter for essentials and shopping? Would it be an idea to stock up for the famous Scottish snowfall that can occur any time of the year? Or is winter snow in Banchory easy to handle?

Is this a whale tooth?
I found this on the beach today and what wondering if anyone has seen one before, I reckon it’s a tooth and if it is, what does it belong to? I tried to do a google image search and it didn’t really give me a definitive answer.

Roofing scammers in Aberdeen & NE Scotland vs trusted traders
This is to keep a track here from the community of trusted vs suspicious traders, incl. for roofing or anythin in Aberdeen, shire and NE Scotland. Community reports show rising roofing scams and rogue traders in the region, so that's why I'm making this post as a community watch on what's happening.
I'll start with listing a few that based on what others told me, to be wary of. I can't tell you for sure. Check everything when making your decisions.
There's some peeps going round using VERY similar names to other roofing company names and collecting their good reviews. Some are V good at being convincing and building trust.
The basic advice from the officials is:
* Never part with cash or give in to high pressure demands.
* Use word of mouth or a trusted source like Aberdeen trusted trader scheme
Aberdeen roofing and traders neighbourhood watch
As roofing schemes rise across the country, let's start a neighbourhood watch, as at some point we may need a tile fixed or our roofing replaced. So go on share your experiences here of what you have heard are good or bad, and who to avoid.
I'll list a couple I've heard from people to AVOID or be WARY OF, so decide for yersel:
Skyshield roofing and services (skyshield roofing & services ltd) not to be confused with another company 'sky shield roofing' who put out a warning about a company using their name
Tip Top Roofing NES Ltd (not to be confused with tip top roofing or tip top building services or similar sounding companies)
W Homes Outdoor Sealing
Fencing NI & Landscaping Ltd
So I can't tell you for sure but there may be multiple operating. I can't share the stories in full from my contacts as I can't rly verify myself. I checked the above out of interest and they appear to be using very similar names to other companies. Make your own decisions but use caution, especially if ye hear from the above.
Go ahead comment here on the list any suspicious activity from companies and list ones that are trusted and how they did. So like as a community report any scams or suspicious activity below for north and east Scotland. Also tell us good traders to use you think be trustworthy.
Cheers

I miss my postie.
I used to hear my friends and family in different areas of Aberdeen moan about going days without getting any post and I never appreciated it because my postie was awesome, such a nice bloke and you knew if he didn't get your parcel delivered that day, it was because the man had been ridiculously busy. Then he went on holiday for 2 weeks awhile ago and I have seen him once and since he is no longer my postie it sucks. Whichever area has him, you are so lucky. 2 days my parcels have been "ready for delivery" but alas they have not made it out for delivery yet. I never knew how lucky I was.

Help! Union street incident 11th October
Hi, I witnessed a man fall on union street across from miller and carter yesterday and went unconscious for around 10 minutes. the ambulance was there performing cpr on him for a very long time and I had to leave after that. I’m just wondering if anyone has an update and knows if the man is okay. It’s all I have been thinking about

What is the creepiest thing to happen to you in Aberdeen?
To celebrate spooky season - what is the creepiest or scariest encounter you have had in Aberdeen?
and don’t worry, I already know the scariest thing to happen in Aberdeen are the union street roadworks and George street at rush hour, but any other genuinely scary moments I would love to hear about !

Help! Groups and and in-person meet-ups?
Hello Aberdeen!
I have a friend in Aberdeen that I think could benefit from having an in-person social outlet. I've looked on EventBrite and the monthly announcements thread, and started compiling a list of things for her to check out. However, there doesn't seem to be much I can find. I don't live in Aberdeen (hello from the USA) and would love some help.
I'm looking for anything:
- Art related activities and groups
- LGBTQ+ related/friendly
- Aimed at mid 20's or 20-30 year olds
- Community volunteer groups, mutual aid, and events
- Volunteer opportunities involving childcare
- Anything nerdy (saw some game groups LEGO nights)
- Anything I haven't listed that still is a good meet-people opportunity.
If there are other websites or organizations I should look at, please point me in the right direction. I really care about my friend, and I really do think if she got involved in her community and found a social outlet outside of the online group we are in it would do her wonders. I'm thankful I live in a city with lots of mutual aid groups and social events, and I know there has to be more things in Aberdeen than the few event I found.
Thanks in advance!
