AITA for refusing to pay $300 after I returned a lost wallet and he accused me of taking cash from it?

• Upvotes

Last Saturday, when I was taking a walk with my dog in the park, together with my friend Caleb, I noticed a brown leather wallet lying on the floor near the picnic tables. I picked it up and tried to find the owner through the ID card. The wallet belonged to a man called Gary. He lives several streets away from my place. I've met him before but I haven't spoken to him.

As there was a big amount of cash in it, I wanted to make sure that nothing would go wrong. Before doing something with the wallet, I opened it in front of Caleb and took a picture of its content – the cards, ID and $340 in cash. Don't know why I did it but I didn't want any problems later on.

Anyway, I went to Gary's house and returned his wallet. When he saw us, he was very grateful to us. He counted all the money and the cards on his porch and thanked me for returning it all back.

The following night, he came to my door and told me that $300 was missing from the wallet. He “wasn’t thinking clearly at that time" and that “someone must have taken it while we were walking from the park to our home.” When he was saying this, he was looking straight into my eyes.

I remained very calm and showed him our picture along with its timestamp. And I informed him that Caleb was with me all the time and could vouch for everything. But he said that “the picture didn’t prove anything” and that “I could have taken out the money later after photographing it.” Then he went on to say that if I would just confess to it and give the money to him, they would let it go.

I said, no. That I gave back all that I received, that he verified the receipt in front of two witnesses and that I wouldn’t confess to something that I never did”.

Gary has also added that the proper way out of this fiasco would be if I confessed my wrongs and paid him off.

I don’t think I should apologize and pay them something that I have never done.

AITAH for not apologizing and not paying up?

AITA for not keeping up with housework after my mothers passing

My mother recently passed away 6 days ago after a year and a half long battle with adrenal cancer. I was fortunate enough to be right by her side as she passed, but that memory of her flatlining has completely stuck in my memory and on repeat ever since her death happened. I've been a complete mess since her passing and have felt immense guilt since it was ultimately up to me and my sister to take her off life support after a week long hospital stay where she continued to decline every passing day. I have been off work grieving and bed rotting for the past week, but try to put on a happy show for my 2 year old son. I make sure that even though I'm hurting emotionally that his needs are always met and it's not interfering with his day to day life, even though it takes everything out of me.

Fast forward to today, me and my husband start arguing over house chores. More specifically cleaning, as I have been very diligent in making sure meals are still made or have something delivered so that my son and husband can still eat. I told him that I am grieving and am taking this loss very hard and that he doesn't understand how I'm feeling. He snapped at me saying "When my mom passes away I know I'll make sure to keep up with my part of house chores". This struck a big nerve in me and came off completely inconsiderate as he's seen the toll this loss has had on me and on top of it I'm still figuring out details of the memorial service that's next week. I have now locked myself in my room crying as I'm scanning pictures for my mamas slideshow.

Side note- While all this has happened I am currently 7 months pregnant as well which already doesn't help as I've had intense cramping and braxton hicks contractions that have only been worse since all the stress my mom in the hospital and her passing.

AITA for not bringing my wife a camping tent

1.9k Upvotes

My wife and two older daughters have a girl scout camping trip tonight at a place about 30-40 minutes from the house. I stayed home with our two little ones. About an hour after she left, and about 15 minutes I got the two little ones down for naps, she called and said she remembered everything but she forgot the tent in the garage.

She wanted me to bring it to her immediately. I asked why I couldn't bring it in a few hours when the kids woke up because they had just gone down for naps. She said everyone was setting up at that moment and she couldn't wait for later. I asked if I could have an hour so I could let them sleep some before waking them and ruining the rest of the nap. She said she wanted me to wake them and take it to her right then, or she would just go to Walmart and buy one. We hung up, I looked on Walmart's site, and sent her one she might want to buy and told her that it would probably be cheaper than me wasting gas to drive 60-90 minutes round trip.

She ended up going to Walmart and buying one but sent me a text she was upset I didn't help her when she needed help. I understand that I should always help, especially when I can and/or especially when she needs help with something.

I responded I have no problem helping but waking them up after only sleeping a few would mess up the rest of the day.

I'm trying to figure out if I was in the wrong here. AITA?

AITA for insulting my boyfriend's english?

I (22F) have been dating my boyfriend (26M) for two years. He is originally from France but lives in the US. His English is pretty good and he's able to have most conversations just fine, of course he does have an accent and makes occasional grammatical errors, but overall it's pretty good and easy to understand.

I have been learning French for four years since my freshman year in college and I studied abroad in Paris so I have a decent grasp on the language. I speak with him in French often because it's his first language so of course he doesn't mind, and I want to improve.

But he corrects my French constantly. From my experience in France it does seem correcting people is a bit more common, and when I studied abroad, I got corrected by French people all the time even for minor errors. I know he's not trying to be mean and I do appreciate it sometimes. But there's a difference between correcting someone when they ask for advice on how to phrase something or what word to use and interrupting a conversation to point out a mistake that doesn't actually affect your understanding of what they're saying.

In my experience, it's not really considered polite in the US to correct an English-learner if they make a small mistake. The mindset is more "if it doesn't hinder my understanding, it doesn't really matter".

I've mentioned this to my boyfriend before that he maybe should chill out a bit as if he were to do this to someone else they might perceive him as rude.

Yesterday I was having dinner with him and I was saying something and said like un femme instead of une femme and he interrupted me mid point and corrected that. Obviously I know that the word femme in french is feminine, it's one of the first words you learn and it's quite obvious given the fact it means woman.

I was annoyed because I was talking about something serious. I switched back to English and said that his English isn't as good as he thinks it is and there's tons of stuff he says wrong yet I don't correct him. I also said that we live in the US so I really don't have any need to speak French so I frankly do not give a shit about sounding native if people can understand me.

He got really quiet after that. Later, he told me that what I said was cruel because he worked hard to learn English and that "English is harder than French" so I shouldn't be disparaging his. I told him that I wasn't trying to insult his English and it was pretty good, I just wanted him to feel how I felt when he constantly interrupts me.

Now I think I may have crossed a line and been a bit too harsh. I do think his English is good enough, and I don't usually notice or care about his mistakes. I was just quite frustrated and wanted him to understand my point, but I can see how what I said might have sounded like I was belittling something he's worked hard on.

AITA?

WIBTA for refusing to pay my friend for a birthday outing I didn't know I was paying for?

I (30F) recently received a $50 Venmo request from a friend (30F) a week after her birthday, and I’m debating declining it.

Originally, she planned a birthday weekend in Joshua Tree with about two weeks notice. The Airbnb alone was $200 per person, plus food and other expenses. I already had a NYC trip planned that she knew about, so money was tight. I also had a Friday work event and asked whether arriving Saturday would change my share. She said everyone would pay equally regardless, and when I expressed hesitation, she replied, “Don’t worry about it though, no need to come!!”

We didn’t speak for a few weeks. On her birthday, I learned through her cousin that she’d canceled Joshua Tree. Hours later, my friend sent me a voice memo inviting me to celebrate at a Hyatt resort pool instead. She mentioned purchasing resort passes but never discussed a price or said I’d owe her anything.

Despite the awkwardness, I went because I wanted to be a good friend. I paid $20 for parking, stayed about an hour, and left. A week later, she Venmo-requested me $50 for “Hyatt resort.”

Here’s why I’m particularly annoyed.
Previously, we attended her cousin’s birthday dinner. Beforehand, we had happy hour where we each drank one glass of wine, but she also ordered two food items. When the check came, she offered to pay and said, “You’ll get me next time.” I agreed.

At dinner, we’d agreed to split the birthday girl’s portion. I put the entire $300+ bill on my card, plus an additional $30 tip. Another friend sent me $80, which didn’t fully cover her share, but I let it go.

My friend then sent me only $35 because she’d deducted $40 for our earlier happy hour. I thought that was ridiculous considering what she’d ordered versus me, but again, I said nothing.

Now she’s requesting another $50 for a resort pass I never agreed to purchase. I understand passes cost money, and I did attend, but I would’ve reconsidered going had I known it would cost $50 plus parking just to spend an hour at the pool. MIND YOU it started to rain before she went and when a few of us expressed hesitation about the weather being shitty, she said she still wanted to go. I thought it was a little ridiculous to expect guests to want to spend a day by the pool when it was raining but I digress.

I feel like I’ve repeatedly been flexible about money in this friendship, but that consideration isn’t being reciprocated. At the same time, I recognize she may have assumed I’d reimburse her.

WIBTA if I declined the Venmo request and explained my frustration, or should I just pay it and move on?

EDIT*** we also tipped $20 cash as well as the $30 on my card so it was a $50 tip sorrrrry but also I feel like we should not as a society have to tip on the price of food but I digress

AITA For Now Wanting to Babysit For My Brother’s Girlfriend Anymore?

3 days ago my brother, his girlfriend and I got into a pretty bad argument. They obviously teamed up against me and whatever. I have babysit my brother’s girlfriend’s kid for over 3 years now. She went outside and I went out to talk to her about what happened. All I got was yelled at and told a bunch of bullshit. Until.. she looked at me and went “you are the biggest inconvenience, waste of time and money in my life.”

So I took it upon myself and walked away and went and applied for a job and decided I’m ready to give up working for her since it’s wasting her money having to pay me for childcare.

The thing that gets me is the fact that she has lived with us in our house for free for over 3 years now. And that whole time I have watched her kid. As a matter of fact I started out for FREE maybe getting paid $5-$10 out of her tips. I had to ask to be paid before she finally did. Nobody else would have done that? Thanks to me, she is able to work and financially support her kid. Thanks to US letting her stay with us for free she’s saving THOUSANDS on rent not having to have her own place.

So would IBTAH if I decided to continue going through getting a different job and telling her I’m done after being told that?

I leave for college in a year so eventually she’ll have to figure out something. But then again, it’s only a year I have left. Is it worth leaving now?

AITA for finally snapping at my aunt for constantly humiliating me over being financially dependent on my dad?

1.3k Upvotes

I’m 19 and still studying. My dad has always paid for my expenses, and I’ve never pretended otherwise. I’m fortunate to have a father who genuinely wants to provide for me, and I’ve never taken that for granted.

My aunt, however, has made it her personal mission to constantly remind me that I’m financially dependent on him probably till the day I die.

Every family gathering comes with comments about how spoiled I am and how people my age are already working while I’m still being funded by my dad. If I buy something nice, she asks how much of his money it cost. If I vocalise any problems in my personal life, she says I don’t know what real hardship looks like.

I usually brush or laugh it off because defending myself somehow makes me look even more entitled.

Last weekend, we were having dinner with relatives when someone asked what I planned to do after graduating. Before I could answer, my aunt laughed and said,

“Not everyone has the talent or drive to make it on their own. One’s parents can only keep them comfortable for so long.”

Everyone just laughed awkwardly. I smiled because I genuinely didn’t know what else to do.

She then started talking about how proud she was that one of our relatives’ children didn’t need to ask anyone for money. Looking directly at me, she added, “It’s shameful to be your age and still have your father paying for everything.”

I finally asked why she was so obsessed with my finances when my dad had never once complained about supporting me.

She replied, “Because one day he’ll be gone, and then what? You can’t spend your whole life being someone else’s responsibility.”

I went quiet. Not because I agreed with her, but because losing my dad is something I already struggle to think about, and she’d just used that fear to humiliate me in front of everyone.

I told her I knew how fortunate I was, but my father had willingly and wholeheartedly chosen to support me while I studied. Why did she keep treating his generosity as something shameful?

She said I was proving how spoiled I was by getting offended whenever someone told me the truth.

I snapped and told her I hoped her children never felt they had to earn the right to be loved by her by how financially dependent they were on someone else, and I’d never understand why she was so determined to make me feel worthless over something my own father was more then happy to do.

She called me disrespectful, and a few relatives agreed I’d crossed a line.

What hurts most is that my dad wasn’t even there. He works hard, and I know how much he’s sacrificed for me. I’m working towards a future where I can support myself, but sometimes I already feel guilty that I can’t give him back everything he’s given me. I don’t need my family turning that guilt into a reason to humiliate or guilt trip me.

I know I’m privileged. I know others my age have responsibilities I don’t. But does that mean I deserve to be treated as less capable or worthy because my father can afford to help me? AITA?

AITAH if I just don’t want to do this?

My 12 year old Son has a friend who constantly asks for favours from us. Dropping him off after school, asking for snacks, asking my Son for his lunch etc. Basically he has no qualms asking for what he wants. This happens on a weekly basis for a few years now. Yes I’m a stay at home mom who also manages our family business and all household tasks are delegated to me. Some days when I pick up Son from school I just want to go home right away and not have to make any short detours. His friend keeps asking for rides when he lives about 7 mins walk away. While I’m usually able to drop him off am I being mean if I say no? I feel like this friendship has been extremely one sided of me constantly doing favours and never getting anything reciprocated.

For those asking: reciprocity- this kid doesn’t even offer to share snacks or do any act of service in return to my child. And no he’s not poor. I barely get a thank you from his parents.

Not the A-hole AITA for calling my friend flat in front of the guy she likes after she kept calling me fat?

6.8k Upvotes

I'm a 20F college student, and I have a friend, N (21F). She has a habit of making comments about my weight.

For context, I'm not thin. I'm also not someone who can't take a joke, but there's a difference between joking with someone and making them the designated fat friend of the group.

N has been calling me fat eversince I met her. Sometimes it's relatively harmless stuff, like making comments about what I'm eating. Other times, she'll point out my stomach in pictures, tell me certain outfits don't suit my body, or make jokes about how I should probably skip dessert.

The worst part is that she does this in front of other people. If we're out with classmates and someone offers to share food with me, she'll say something like, "Girl, you really don't need that."

I've told her to cease this several times. She always responds with some sort of "I'm just joking," or "You're too sensitive"

The rest of our friend group mostly laughs it off. Nobody ever says anything when she does it.

Now, N has recently developed a godzilla sized crush on K (21M). She's been trying to get his attention for weeks. She's constantly talking about him (extremely irritating, mind you), asking him if her new haircut is good, and finding excuses to sit next to him.

Last Friday, a bunch of us were sitting together in the cafeteria, including K. N was talking about how she wanted to wear a particular dress to an upcoming college fest but wasn't sure if it looked good on her.

Someone asked to see a picture of it, and she showed us.

K said it looked nice on her.

N immediately turned to me and said, "Where do you think you'll buy a dress? I don't think they have your size in normal stores." (For context I am a size 10 or L)

Everyone laughed a little.

Then I said, "At least I can fill out a dress. You look like a highway with hair."

The table went completely silent.

Even K awkwardly looked away, trying not to smile.

N looked absolutely humiliated and didn't say another word for the rest of lunch.

Later, she texted me saying I was a disgusting person for body-shaming her in front of someone she liked. She said she'd never been so humiliated in her life and that I knew she was insecure about her chest and body hair.

I told her that perhaps now she understood how I felt.

It could have ended right there. But later that night, K texted me saying it was extremely satisfying to see N humiliated that way, after all the nonsense she pulls. It was normal platonic text, that I fleetingly mentioned to N's roommate, R.

But in a fight with N, R inflated the whole thing and used it against her (I'm not sure how, as of yet). The whole friend group is pretty conflicted and some people blame me for starting the whole fiasco.

AITA for being protective of my daughter's privacy

So this happened today, and I'd like to get some feedback from others who may have been in a similar situation.

I (33yom) took my daughter (4yo) to see my parents as we haven't seen them for a couple of weeks. We went into a clothing store to buy my daughter some stuff. Bought her a T Shirt.

As we were walking out of the clothing store, my dad said that we would change her shirt in the area where the greeter is standing (As in, the highest traffic area of the store), as it would only take a moment.

I told my Dad that I would take her to a parent change room, as I wasn't comfortable with her taking her shirt off in a public space, particularly with so many cameras and people around.

Dad kept pushing this point, and I stood my ground and refused to change her in the middle of the store, and that I'd take her to the change room just across the hall. I was fairly abrupt towards the end of this argument, and he eventually conceded. We went and changed in the parent room and were back with my parents within a couple of minutes.

Am I in the wrong here? I just feel that in a day and age where there are cameras absolutely everywhere, plus the risk of people having "smart" glasses, and just people in general seeing her getting undressed, it was inappropriate. My 4yo daughter is a little girl now, and deserves privacy when changing.

What are your thoughts? Should I have just bitten the bullet and let her change then and there? Was I being overprotective?

AITA for not taking my nephew to a festival with my kids and his sister

My best friend and her kids (my niece and nephew, 10m and 5f) are staying with me, my husband, and our kids (3, 5, 6) after her apartment burned down and she wasn’t able to afford another apartment in her city. She moved out of state to stay with us, so the kids don’t see their dad very often (Their dad was given the option to have the kids full time and chose not to have them).

I love my friend and her kids but her 10 year old is struggling with the move and taking it out on the other kids, but especially his sister. His excuse is always that boys like messing with girls.

My friend had to go out of town for work earlier this week for 1 night. I kept all of the kids and her son was really testing boundaries while she was gone. He was harassing the other kids nonstop, had already lost dessert, then when the kids were watching a movie on the couch, he stuck his butt right in front of his sister’s face and farted about 3 inches from her face.

I told him he was done with screen time and he took the remote and refused to hand it over. He gave in once I called my husband over and I ended up sending him to his room for the night, which he also refused to do until my husband walked him to his room. Husband ended up standing outside his door because he kept leaving, trying to watch the movie with the rest of the kids, and making my husband get involved to get him to go back to his room.

My husband and I are taking the kids to a festival today. My friend planned to bring her kids but she is sick. I told her that I will gladly take her daughter but her son would have to stay home with her because he doesn’t listen to me and I won’t make my husband act like a prison guard to keep her kid in line. She agreed that that was fair.

We were getting ready to go and her son asked why he can’t come. I told him the truth. If I have to call my husband over every time I need him to do or stop doing something, he doesn’t behave well enough for me to take him in public.

He got mad and started yelling that it’s not fair, we hate him, and cursing at all of us. We left without him but now my husband is saying that he could’ve handled watching him and that with all he’s going through, excluding him is probably only making it worse.

Now I’m wondering if I’m the asshole for deciding not to let him come with us.

AITA for causing my Nephew to get bullied?

So my nephew (9) repeats a lot of shit he sees on the internet. Recently he’s been calling autistic people and people who are "weird" "r-tards" and "spergs" and he's been mocking them for their "cringe" interests. He's also bullied a kid for havin a crush on a cartoon character ,calling them delusional and saying they belong in an insane aslyum for r-tards . This has gotten him at trouble at school but his parents don’t actually care about, they only told him not to say the r-word and not that’s it’s degrading and ableist. When I brought it up to my sister that he still says it around family, she simply said I’m too much of a snowflake . So I’ve decided to teach him myself.

At first I told him that it’s mean to say that to people because what if people made fun of him being short. He said he simply didn’t care, however he is incredibly self conscious about his glasses so I decided to use that instead in a different way.

Yesterday my sister asked me to pick him up from school and when I arrived at the pick up point, a small group of autistic students (they walked funny and had stiff body language) passed by and he started doing the "t-rex" walk and shouting "r-tard" and "failed abrtions" . I then said loudly “nephew, at least they can actually see without needing big ass glasses!” And one of the students said “yeah my grandmas needs glasses too but they’re not as big as yours!” My nephew was visibly upset after this and on the way home, he cried and yelled at me. I told him now you know how those students feel but he wouldn’t listen. After I dropped him off home, I told my sister what happened and she got visibly upset and yelled at me saying that was too far and i shouldn’t have done that. AITA

Not the A-hole AITA for calling 911 because the fire alarm went off and we smelled smoke

My bf and I woke up at 6:30 am to our fire alarm going off for about 45 seconds and we smelled smoke. As a precaution, we went outside. There was no commotion but I decided to call 911 just in case it was a real concern and there was something burning we could not see. He has a dog so I wanted to make sure 100%.

My bf was concerned about his pot. I told him no one cares, it’s the fire department, not the cops. He was paranoid about it and I couldn’t understand that.

They come and clear everything. He’s thinks im overreacting by calling 911, and now he can’t go back to sleep.

Am I the asshole?

AITA for informing our parents after discovering my brother using drugs?

I’m 23F and my brother is 21M. We still reside at home with our parents. We've generally been close but over the past year, he’s been spending time with a different group and staying out late.

A couple of weeks ago, I came home early and went to the basement. I discovered him and two friends snorting something off a table. It was obviously not marijuana. When I confronted him, he became defensive, insisted it was “just this once” and told me to stay out of it.

I felt shaken and upset. That night, I informed our parents about what I witnessed. They took it seriously they grounded him, confiscated his car keys for a while and had a serious discussion with him. He has been grounded and under more scrutiny since then.

Since then, my brother has been extremely angry with me. He claims I betrayed him, that I should have spoken to him first instead of going right to our parents and that I’ve completely damaged our relationship. I knew it really hurt him when he said “our relationship will never be the same”. I’m beginning to feel bad but I’ve seen what long term usage of drugs have done to people.

I believe I did the right thing. He brought illegal substances into our home and our parents had a right to know or maybe I overreacted by going to them right away instead of allowing him a chance to explain or correct his behavior.

So AITA for informing our parents after discovering my brother using drugs?

AITAH for refusing to pay my bf back for a trip he booked without asking me?

I (24F) have been dating my boyfriend (26M) for almost two years. We don't live together, but we usually spend weekends at each other's places.

Last weekend, we planned to have a quiet weekend at home because I've been stressed with work lately. On Friday, he surprised me by telling me he'd booked a two-night getaway for us. He'd already spent around $600 on a nonrefundable hotel.

I appreciated the thought, but I honestly didn't want to go. I was exhausted and had been looking forward to relaxing at home. I told him I wasn't comfortable going and offered to cover my half of the dinner plans we'd originally made, but I didn't think I should have to pay for a trip I never agreed to.

He got upset and said he was only trying to do something nice for us. He said he'd put time and money into planning a surprise, and that I made him feel like his effort meant nothing. He ended up going alone.

Now he wants me to reimburse him for half the hotel, arguing that he wouldn't have booked it if he hadn't planned to take me. I refused because I never agreed to the trip in the first place.

I do feel guilty, because I know he meant well, and I can understand whwy he'd be disappointed... but I also feel like paying him back would be unfair when I had no say in the decision.

AITAH for refusing to pay my bf half the hotel cost, even though he booked the trip as a surprise for me???

AITAH for not paying back my friends for the concert ticket they split to buy for me?

• Upvotes

I (23f) and five other people went to a concert last weekend and we all paid $200 each for our tickets including the parking pass. When we got to the concert and was trying to find our seats, we found out that our seat was second from the very top row. I thought it was a bit insane that we paid that much for our tickets for where our seats were because I have been to other concerts where I paid that much or less and sat a whole lot closer. But since they are really popular artists, it makes sense. We then look on Ticketmaster to see what the prices are now 30 minutes before the concert starts and they dropped tremendously. The floor tickets went from somewhere over $1,000 to $150. We all thought it was a steal, the only problem for me was that I didn't have enough money to spare to buy another ticket to sit closer while everyone else did.

I did mention to them that they can upgrade and I'll be completely fine stay in our original seat. They continued just looking how much the tickets were at other cities for floor to compare and were curious about it. I just went back to my phone playing games to kill time. As some time passed, they told me that they're buying the tickets and splitting my ticket amongst the five of them. I told them no and not worry about me cause I didn't wanna have to worry about paying them back and that type of person that I really don't like handouts. They all said no that they want to so that it's an experience for all of us and to have a good time. I couldn't thank them enough and we all moved to our new seats and had an amazing time at the concert.

Last night one of them messaged me last night wondering when I can start paying them back for the ticket they all split to purchase for me. I responded that I thought I didn't have to worry about it cause they wanted to and that's one of the reasons why I didn't want them to. She said that it would be better and shouldn't be much trouble to be able to save up the $150 total to pay them back. It took me a while to save up to be able to buy the concert tickets we originally got and extra to be able to enjoy the weekend. And that one friend that sent me the message knows the struggles I go with and the economy is not helping at all. So, AITAH for not wanting to pay back my friends the ticket they split to buy for me?

Not the A-hole AITA for refusing to let my friend borrow my car again after he returned it with no gas?

A friend of mine doesn't have a car, so I've let him borrow mine a few times. Never really had an issue with it until last month.

He borrowed it for a weekend to visit family a couple hours away. I gave it to him with almost a full tank and got it back Sunday night practically empty. When I brought it up, he said he was running late and would send me money for gas.

He didn't. I reminded him a few days later and he said he'd forgotten and would do it later. Never heard anything after that.

Last Friday he asked to borrow my car again to pick someone up from the airport. I said no and when he asked why, I told him I wasn't happy about what happened last time.

He got annoyed and said I was seriously making a big deal over gas money. Then he offered to send it right there, but I still said no.

Now he's saying I should've just reminded him again instead of holding a grudge. A mutual friend thinks I'm being stubborn since he offered to pay me back.

I don't really care about the money at this point. I just don't want to lend my car to someone I have to chase down for something that should've been obvious.

Am I the asshole?

Not the A-hole AITA For Telling a Friend She Needs To Reconsider Her Career Choice?

Hello, I need to know if I’m the AH here. I’ll accept any judgement good or bad.

So I (40F) am a respiratory therapist and have been for nearly ten years. We don’t get much respect but oh well. I entered community college at what I consider a late age. I went to college straight out of high school but failed out after three years.

When I did my first stint in college out of high school a friend of mine went to a local school of nursing. It wasn’t a college college but it was a school that taught nothing but nursing run by a local hospital. I lost contact with her shortly after that. Contact with her has been patchy because life is crazy and she doesn’t use social media.

Twelve years ago I was doing my pre-recs for respiratory therapy at my community college. I ran into her at my college. She was starting clinicals for the nursing program. I didn’t think much of it. College didn’t work out for me the first time either so I just brushed it off. When she started at another campus I lost contact with her again.

Recently I ran into her at a high school classmate’s funeral. When we all started catching up she told me she was still working on her nursing degree but the current program she was in wasn’t working out. That was when she filled me in on what post high school education has been like for her.

Just to explain, here’s what she’s done trying to become a nurse:

Nursing trade school right out of high school; didn’t work out.

Local state college for nursing; didn’t work out

Local university for nursing; didn’t work out

Local tech school for nursing; didn’t work out

Local community college for nursing (where I ran into her); didn’t work out

Tech school further away for nursing; didn’t work out

Community college further away for nursing; currently not working out.

We’re now 22 years out of high school and she’s been trying to become a nurse for 22 years and has been through SEVEN schools. I ended up saying, “maybe it’s nursing in general that isn’t working out. Have you considered respiratory therapy or rad tech? You already have your pre-recs.” She said I was a jerk for asking her to give up on her dreams. Maybe I was. But I’ll leave that for you to decide. I’d love to see her achieve her dreams, but it really feels like she’s suffering needlessly.

AITA for not sending my mom another text while I was out, even though she knew I’d be home really late and has my location?

I’m 21F and live with my parents. Earlier in the day, I told my mom I’d be coming home really late because I was going out. My last text to her was around 12:45 a.m., and I ended up getting home at 5:30 a.m. I forgot to send another update, but she also has access to my location.

When I got home, she was still awake and pissed at me. She kept asking whether I’d slept with the guy I was out with and why I would be out that long. I felt uncomfortable being questioned about my sex life.

Later that afternoon, she texted me asking me to get up and help take care of our dog because she was exhausted from “waiting for ur ass last night,” couldn’t go back to sleep, and had been cleaning up after the dog all day. She also asked me to take out the trash. I said okay to both.

I’m not upset about helping with the dog or doing chores. What bothers me is being blamed for her staying awake when I’d already told her I would be home really late, and then being interrogated about what I did. Sometimes it feels like she’s staying up to confront me, although I can’t know exactly what she’s feeling.

I understand that another text would’ve been considerate, but I don’t feel like forgetting one justifies her reaction. AITA for not sending another update?

Update: I showed my mom this post, and she wanted me to include that she has cancer and PTSD, which add to her anxiety. I hadn’t included that initially because it’s her personal history, and I didn’t feel comfortable sharing it without her consent. She explained that asking whether I’d had sex was connected to wondering why I was out so late and worrying about whether I’m practicing safe sex. She’s enjoying reading everyone’s responses but still feels that she’s right to worry about me.

WIBTA if I asked my coworker not to volunteer me for that group project

I have a lot going on at home right now and the last thing I need is extra work dumped on my plate. The other day at lunch Emma mentioned that she was going to put my name on the sign-up sheet for the big cross-team project without even asking me. I told her not to do that, but she just laughed and said I am always the reliable one so it would be fine. Now I keep wondering if I should say something again or just let it happen. The project itself is not bad, but it would mean extra evenings for the next month. Emma keeps insisting that it would be no big deal and that I am overthinking it. I know she means well, but it still feels like my time is being offered without my input. I do not want to come off as uncooperative at work, but I also do not want to end up stuck doing something I never agreed to. Would it be wrong to put my foot down and tell her again that she cannot volunteer me for stuff like this?

AITA for refusing to co-sign my sister’s lease, then telling Mom why?

I’m 27M, live in Nebraska, and manage a Target store. My sister Emily (24) has a three-year-old son and asked me to co-sign an apartment lease. I said no, but I’m less sure about how I defended it.

Emily is recovering financially after splitting with her son’s dad. She works full-time at a dental office but falls short of the apartment’s income requirement. Rent is about $1,350, and the guarantor agreement could leave me responsible for unpaid rent.

I told her I wasn’t comfortable with that legal responsibility. She said she’d make the payments and asked if I didn’t trust her. I said, “I trust you to try, but I can’t guarantee nothing will go wrong.” I offered $1,000 toward moving costs, but she said that wouldn’t help her qualify and felt like I was buying my way out of helping.

I grew up with an abusive dad and struggled financially from 18 to 22, including relying on welfare. I’m protective of the stability I’ve built. Last year I loaned Emily $450 for car repairs. She repaid me, though I had to remind her.

At dinner a few days later, Mom asked whether I’d agreed to co-sign. When I said no, she reminded me that people helped me when I was struggling. I said guaranteeing a lease wasn’t the same as a one-time expense, but Mom said I was exaggerating the risk.

I got defensive and said Emily was still catching up on bills and I wouldn’t put my name on a lease without knowing her budget. Then I mentioned the loan and having to chase her for repayment. I wanted Mom to understand I wasn’t being selfish.

Emily looked embarrassed. “I paid you back. So because I had a hard year, I can never ask you for anything?” She said I’d told Mom she was irresponsible. I said I wasn’t calling her irresponsible in general, just that I didn’t want to be responsible if she couldn’t pay. She took her son into the living room, and Mom said I’d made my point but didn’t need to humiliate her.

The next day Emily texted that she’d been working hard to improve things and had trusted me with her financial details. She said she’d never used my rough years to make me feel unreliable. I apologized for sharing her private history, but didn’t change my mind.

We still text, mostly about her son, but things are colder. Mom thinks my savings mean I could afford the risk. I think having savings doesn’t obligate me to guarantee someone else’s rent. I admit I wanted Mom to see me as reasonable, so I used details that weren’t mine to share.

I love my sister and want her and her son to have stable housing. I also don’t want to become the family’s financial backup because I’m doing okay.

AITA for refusing to co-sign, or was I wrong to bring up her money problems to justify it? I’ll apologize for that part, but I don’t think I should apologize for saying no.

AITA for wanting my MIL to move out when my partner thinks I’m being cruel?

My partner and I have been living with my brother and MIL for a few months, and I’m overwhelmed by the situation.

My brother initially planned to stay for his nine month visa. We eventually told him he needed to move out because he wasn’t respecting our house rules, but this became flexible after he made a drastic improvement that we both acknowledged.

Shortly after, my MIL moved in following a breakup with her long term partner. There was no timeline, but I thought it was temporary.

She’s very nice for the most part, but boundaries are an issue. We’ve been dragged into the drama with her ex, as she repeatedly cuts him off and reconnects with him. She also wants to know everyone’s whereabouts and plans, and coming home from work often feels like answering a questionnaire. My partner agrees this can be overwhelming.

I asked him to speak to her and explain that we’re adults and can manage our own lives. She became upset and said she didn’t want to live with us anyway because she could tell we didn’t want her there.

A few days later, I asked if she was genuinely looking to move because my mum is planning to visit. She said she was looking, but things were tough.

Meanwhile, my friend offered my brother a room, and he accepted. After viewing it, he joked about changing his mind because the bed was too small. My partner became visibly frustrated and said his mum will be moving out regardless because he wanted our space back and was tired of the situation.

I spoke to my brother and told him to take his commitment seriously.

I’d asked my partner not to tell his mum about my friend’s offer because I didn’t want to deter her from finding a place. She later suggested moving there herself, and he explained my brother was potentially taking the room. My friend had already confirmed she wouldn’t accommodate MIL.

My partner then told me one of MIL’s housing options had fallen through. I reiterated that she still needed to find somewhere else. I thought we agreed.

Today, I checked my pet camera and overheard my partner telling his mum that the pressure was off finding somewhere because my brother was moving out.

I felt sick.

When I confronted him, he said I needed to “talk to someone” and that he planned to address it in his own time. He also said I had no business listening to the conversation.

He then asked her to move in with her cousin, who had offered her a place, but said he wasn’t comfortable making her leave and was only doing it to make me happy. He said he strongly disagreed with it. He also said any further discussion would need to happen in front of a professional.

This situation has seriously affected our relationship. We’re distant, barely spend time together, and our sex life is practically nonexistent.

I feel there’s a double standard. I had to enforce boundaries with my brother, but when it comes to his mum, I’m being called cruel for wanting our space back.

AITAH - I told my Uncle to forget his Dad exists

I (40m) take care of my grandpa (91m) who has Alzheimer’s. Grandma used to take care of him with several weekly visits from me, but she passed 5 years ago. I’ve taken on most of his care with the exception of a nurse who comes while I am at work.

My uncle (69m) was stealing grandpa’s money before we found out about his diagnosis. He would tell him a sob story, take him to the bank, get him to withdraw $400-700, then repeat roughly every other day. He knew he was “looping” and didn’t tell anyone. My sister went to visit maybe 4 years ago, realized something was wrong and let the family know. My mom checked things out, he got diagnosed and she said she wasn’t willing to relocate/take on that huge responsibility. Mom wanted gpa in a home, I did not. I moved him in and have been caring for him ever since.

My uncle says that family takes care of each other and that grandpa was responsible for paying his son’s college tuition. I politely told him that everything he took over the years was all he would ever see until grandpa passed (I don’t know what his will states but I’m sure it goes to his two kids, mom and uncle). Uncle comes around every now and then telling me to give him money because that’s his dad and not mine. I always decline and let him know that if he ever wants to visit because he cares, he is more than welcome (he never does).

Grandpa had a heart attack two days ago. I told the family so they are updated about anything regarding his health. Uncle shows up at the hospital being extremely friendly, asking to help and taking shifts at the hospital. Grandpa was released today and I took him home. Uncle shows up and demands that I compensate him for his time. I can’t begin to explain how he’s been since I took over grandpa’s care and I believe this was the proverbial straw for me. I told him to go away and never come back. Pretend his dad doesn’t exist and don’t show up unless it’s at the lawyers to get his “piece of the pie” that seems to be all he cares about. My mom is livid and told me that I was extremely rude and that being a son is bigger than being a grandson. I should let uncle have some money and let him visit whenever. We argued a bit and I didn’t want to talk about it any more, as it was making me upset. My family has been calling telling me I’m out of line because that’s his father… AITAH?

WIBTA if I get the police to give car owner a ticket for partially blocking my driveway?

• Upvotes

I live in a one way street. I have to turn right to get out of my driveway and the street is kind of narrow. Neighbor partially blocking the driveway makes it difficult to get out. WIBTA if I call the police to get them a ticket and would you guys do? The car belongs to a tenant in the house in front (it's a house of rentals). I have told a few of them to please not to block the driveway, some of them no longer do it but occasionally we get it partially blocked by a new tenant. It may not seem blocked by much and I can manage to get out but the extra maneuvering when in a hurry makes it annoying. The green lines show where the ramp fading into the street ends. https://imgur.com/a/OnhDVOA

Edit: Three or 4 houses down the street there's plenty of free parking but they like to park in front of our place because they don't have to walk much (it's just in front of their place)

AITA for forgetting to get my mom M&Ms?

My husband and I purchased our first house last year and our mom came to stay with us. She has her own apartment but we were moving about 30 minutes away and she was nervous about being on her own. She has autoimmune issues and struggles with anxiety and depression. We understood this as a temporary situation and didn’t mind at first since we had extra room, but over a year later she has not left our guest room AND is still paying rent on her apartment that she hasn’t been to.

We do not charge her for rent or utilities, but she does contribute for food. We also have three kids- 11, 10, and 7. She can’t really babysit, but occasionally if we have to do something and cannot arrange other childcare we will ask her to watch the kids. This usually involves her just being awake and available to help with disputes etc. as needed. We make sure to have food ready for them as she doesn’t cook or anything like that and she doesn’t drive.

Today, my husband and I went to help his mom move in a town about 1.5 hours away. We had asked my mom if she could watch the kids a few days beforehand and made sure she was awake when we left at 9am. At 11:30 the kids were calling us asking for help to resolve an argument and we found out my mom had gone back to sleep. Not really a huge deal. We find out later she woke up around noon and actually got out of bed at about 2pm.

We got home around 4:30, after stopping at the grocery store. My mom had asked us to get her a few things including M&Ms. Unfortunately, we forgot the M&Ms. I realized as soon as she started going through the bags, profusely apologized, and offered to go back and get them for her. She was visibly upset and just walked away. We did end up getting them for her after this.

Later, she brought up to my husband how hurt she was to be forgotten again, especially after watching our kids all day. We heard her on the phone later venting about our insensitivity, and she is obviously still upset. I do understand, but it was an exhausting day and we made an honest mistake. AITA?
