Mod Announcement Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread

Monthly Common Questions & Advice Thread

Ask here instead of making a post. A new thread goes up on the 12th of each month.

What belongs in this thread

  • Should I get this card, and how does it compare to another one
  • Do I qualify, and what are my approval odds
  • Welcome offer questions: eligibility, meeting the spend, whether you have had the card before
  • Upgrade, downgrade, and product change questions
  • Retention offers: how to ask, what people have received, whether it is worth trying
  • Deals tied to Amex benefits and partnerships, discussed rather than only linked

Post these as their own thread and we will remove it and point you back here.

Check these first

Most of what gets asked here is already answered in the wiki FAQ, including once-per-lifetime rules, card families, pop-up jail, clawbacks, and financial reviews.

Search the subreddit too. Your question has almost certainly been asked, often this month.

How to ask so you get a useful answer

"Should I get the Gold Card?" gives nobody anything to work with.

Include your spending in broad categories, your rough credit range if you are comfortable sharing it, which Amex cards you already hold, and what you are actually trying to get out of the card. Say what you already read, so people do not repeat it back to you.

Read the terms of any offer before asking what it means, then quote the part that is unclear.

What does not belong here

Referral links or codes. Not in this thread, not anywhere outside the monthly referral thread. Removal, and a ban if you keep doing it.

Account problems. Disputes, fraud, missing credits, and closures need Amex, not us. We are not American Express and no moderator here can see your account.

Personal information. No account numbers, no full names, no addresses, no exact balances. Broad spending categories are fine. Our filters remove suspected card numbers automatically.

If your comment disappears

New and low-karma accounts get filtered automatically when they post links. This happens before any moderator sees it.

Send one modmail and we will review it. Do not repost.

What happens if you post these topics separately

We remove the post and point you here. Repeat offenders get banned.

Sharing referral links, personal attacks, and posting someone's personal information skip straight to a permanent ban.

Housekeeping

We lock and archive this thread monthly.

Be useful to each other. Most people asking here are new to this and got a card two weeks ago.

Upcoming Amex excessive payment reminders šŸ™„

Maybe it’s the wine I’ve put Into an IV into my blood stream but is anyone else getting excessive reminders that their Amex payment is coming up? Yes, I know it’s due in 6 days, yes, I always pay in full. Is this the start to a concern?šŸ·

Discussion How would you guys refresh the Amex Green Card?

I don't really think much of the current green card, from my prospective I think theres more cards that do more for less.

If you were given the chance to make the replacement or to refresh it, what would you do?

Biz plat 35% points back booking issue

I have multiple Amex cards, including one personal plat and 3 biz plats. I just selected AA as my airline for the newest biz plat. All other cards have United selected.

I want to book AA flight, pay with MR and get 35% points back on the new biz plat. However, no matter what card I enter as the payment card on Amex travel, when I switch to ā€œpointsā€ or ā€œbothā€, it defaults back to the personal plat, which does not have AA as the airline and does not give me 35% points back.

I read some posts on Flyertalk that says as long as the biz plat with the desired airline selection is on the MR account, Amex will credit back 35% no matter which card shows on the Amex travel payment page. Is this true? Do I need to create a separate MR account for the biz plat just to make sure the booking goes under the right card?

Account Issue Amex to JetBlue Points Transfer: Anyone Else Getting Linking Errors?

Has anyone else been experiencing issues transferring Amex Membership Rewards points to JetBlue?
Since yesterday, I’ve been unable to transfer points, even though my accounts were previously linked and working fine.
I initially received an error during the transfer, so I tried unlinking and relinking my JetBlue account. Unfortunately, that made things worse, and now I keep getting an ā€œAccount Linking Errorā€ asking me to verify my name, loyalty account number, and account eligibility.
I contacted Amex customer service, and they confirmed they’re aware of a technical issue and are working on fixing it, but couldn’t provide an estimated resolution time.
I’m curious whether this is affecting other JetBlue accounts or additional transfer partners. Has anyone experienced something similar recently?

Question Wedding: Restaurant Purchase, Amex Gold

Probably a stupid question, but anyways, I have a wedding in November. The caterer is an actual restaurant with a physical location which I’ve dined at already, and it shows up correctly as 4X the points. With an Amex Gold, putting 25K on my card would be a lot of points. Should I be notifying Amex before making this purchase? I’ve never put 25K on a card before in a single purchase; balances have been in the 20’s and over 50K across multiple cards, always paid off in full.

Question Delta Gold upgrade to Plat - when companion certificate?

Amex keeps offering me an upgrade from my Delta business gold to the Delta Business Platinum. Fine. My question is when would I get the companion certificate? My Gold renews (1st anniversary) around Christmas time. If I upgrade, would I get the cert this year, or in late 2027 (after having the Plat for a year)? Getting the cert this year (more or less) would suit me a lot better than waiting until late 2027.

Points transfer issue

Since yesterday I haven’t been able to transfer some points to JetBlue. My account and all the info was perfectly linked. It kept giving me an error message. I thought I could just unlink it and link it again but it didn’t work and since the message in the screen keeps appearing:

ā€œAccount Linking Error
It looks like something went wrong. Please double check that:
• The name on both accounts matches exactly
• You entered the correct partner loyalty account number
• You're only linking accounts for Additional Card Members that have been issued for at least 90 days.ā€œ

I had contacted customer service and they said it was an error they are trying to fix but I wonder how big that bug may be since they’re fixing it forever ago.
Is anybody else having this issue with JetBlue or any other partner?

Upgraded 2 Plats on the same day

Hi all,

Got an offer for 125k points to upgrade my Gold card to Platinum and took it.

Well... I thought I did. The website didn't seem to register my upgrade request so I did it again. Lo and behold, I received two Platinum cards in the mail, with two different card numbers. It turned out that somehow, I had upgraded both my Green card to Platinum, as well as my Gold card to Platinum.

I called AmEx today, and the rep said that she double and triple-checked with other team members — she hadn't seen this before, but I was able to successfully upgrade both cards \*and\* both cards have a 125k bonus attached to each of them, individually. I have unlocked a 250k point bonus for 12k minimum spend in 6 months (but with two card fees), essentially.

As part of my upgrade, I had also requested a companion card for my spouse, so in a week we received 3 Platinum cards for the both of us!

Now I'm feeling conflicted. Both my spouse and I are existing CSR holders, and my plan was to downgrade my CSR in Feb when my billing cycle restarts (spouse's billing cycle restarts in April). I was working my way through the AmEx SUBs (Green, Gold, then Plat) first and my spouse would work through the AmEx SUBs later. We will be able to hit the minimum spend on both of the new AmEx Plat cards, but we won't be able to maximize all the rest (rideshare, hotels, etc.)

If you weren't able to use the majority of a Plat card's benefits, would you still keep it for a year for 125k points?

This feels like a great opportunity, but I'm worried about juggling all of these cards in the upcoming year.

Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

Tips & Advice Need help stopping Amex offers for Hospital because I am not Hospital

Post image
175 Upvotes

As you can see I’ve received at least 4 offer mailers to the address of my house in Georgia. The problem is it’s named as Memorial Hermann Baptist Hospital which is a real place in Texas according to the Internet. I’ve never been there so I cannot confirm. I’ve called Amex customer support and they assured me it would stop. It hasn’t.

I don’t want to receive these at my house in Georgia. I suppose the hospital also isn’t interested because it’s not alive and cannot buy things without fingers and autonomy.

Good people of r/Amex how can we end this sorcery? I already have a Delta Skymiles card because I live in Georgia and the Hartsfield Delta hub is right here. I don’t need more cards it will stretch out my nice leather wallet. Please send help or at least post your best solution.

In the immortal words of Mick Foley, ā€œHave a nice day!ā€

Points & Transfers MR transfers failing?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Recently I have tried transferring points to both Hilton and Amex. The Hilton transfer loaded an error page, but the second try went through.

Transferring to JetBlue I have been getting a confirmation message on the transfer page, but no email from Amex confirming the transfer. The points don’t leave my account and nothing shows up in JetBlue.

Amex support could only offer ā€œtry again laterā€. Is this an Amex issue with just JetBlue? Multiple transfer partners?

ā€SOX POINTS ADJUSTMENTā€

Hello,

I referred two friends for amex platinum 2 months ago. I echanges the points out of my account and a few days ago while looking at my balance, i was -150k point negative. I messaged support and seemed that one of my friends had cancelled, i was sure this was not the case…

I complained that this cant be and they told me a timeperiod that strongly suggested that clearly one friend had cancelled.. i messaged them and asked if this is the case and he said no. After some back and fourth i was asked to send an email with a screenshot of me inviting them ans their phonenumber, which i did. Then i checked with my other friend did they cancel and turn out THEY did. I messaged amex that this is my fault, seems the other person cancelled and not me. Now checking my account I suddenly got the points back.. with the reference ā€SOX POINTS ADJUSTMENTā€. No email no nothing.

Do you think this is an accident from amex or some play to keep me happy and continue with them? My spend is quite low with them so this seem weird.

Question Sudden rec for HYSA post-Delta app?

Long story short: mid-term customer since 2020 (BCP), opened a Plat and a Gold this spring after realizing I preferred the Amex ecosystem. So far so good with each, no carryover balances or anything of the sort, although I’ve a new car loan and a couple of other credit apps this year (nothing outrageous or alarming and none of which have been problematic as to excessive balances, etc).

Like everyone else living in a Delta hub who is loyal to Amex, I’m finding the current SUBs awfully enticing, especially as I know I want to step away from chase ASAP (one of the new CCs this year as I weighed CSR vs plat) yet keep my VX (the other new CC - see a trend demoing premium travel cards?).

I already applied for the Delta reserve and landed in PUJ, which I’ve fought intermittently by applying a handful of times several weeks-month apart. Out of frustration tonight and with an imminent Delta trip early next year (among others planned for 2027), I applied for the Delta plat and was rejected for too many recent credit inquiries, which is fair considering my testing the waters with the big 3 in a span of 1 year. I should add I’ve a ~760 credit score and earn low-six-figures, and soon as I opened my Amex app post-Delta plat denial, I started getting targeted ads for a HYSA.

I think yall know where I’m going: should I sign up for a HYSA to capitalize on the delta SUBs? I’d like to pare back to Amex, cap one, and fidelity if it wouldn’t affect my credit, yet I’m not looking to open another HYSA to chase a SUB. Does anyone have any insight?

Should I accept the Blue Business Plus?

I recently got approved for the Amex Blue Business Plus card but am wondering if I should accept it. I currently hold the Chase Freedom Flex and the Blue Cash Back Everyday. I applied as a sole proprietor due to me not actually owning a business of LLC. I was wondering if this card could be worth getting as I know it only gives 2x on all purchases.

Question Can I Get Both Amex BCP Bonuses?

I recently went on incognito mode to apply for the BCP because Amex kept directing me toward upgrading my existing BCE, so I couldn’t see the $300 welcome offer for spending $3,000 in six months.

I was approved, but before accepting the card, I decided it might make more sense to upgrade my existing BCE instead to avoid a potential hard inquiry.

I then accepted an upgrade offer to the BCP, which includes a $150 bonus after spending $1,000 in six months.

However, I just received an email from Amex stating that I have until October 22 to accept the new card, or my application will be automatically withdrawn.

Now I’m reconsidering whether I should accept the new card since I could potentially earn $450 in total bonuses between the two offers.

Since I was approved for the new card before upgrading my existing card, would I still be eligible for the $300 welcome bonus if I accept it?

Has anyone experienced something similar and successfully received both bonuses?

Benefits & Credits Is this Grubhub offer a way to double up the Amex Gold meal credit?

Post image
63 Upvotes

Just got this in the app. 1 year Grubhub+ Premium for free and includes $10 monthly meal credit and $10 monthly grocery order.

Anyone know if the meal credit would stack with the Amex Gold $10 monthly meal credit? Effectively a free way of getting $20/month towards food if you have an Amex Gold card

Edit: I hardly ever use grubhub for delivery, mainly pickup, and this offer only applies to delivery. Still some people might find it worthwhile, but I'd bet they're banking on a whole bunch of people forgetting to cancel before they bill you for the whole next year
