Parvo vaccination for 1.5lb chi help
To sum it up, I have a 9-week-old chihuahua. The breeder took him to the vet and somehow only got him half a vaccine shot. She does this with all her dogs, but I’m confused because it’s not legal here, and I don’t think it’s legal where she lives either. We took him to the vet the day after we got him, and they said he looks great. I was discussing his next vaccines, ( to note I did have the paper from her vet she used, it shows half, I was debating to call which as I’m writing this I probably should), and they mentioned that giving half a shot isn’t legal and that all dogs have the same size immune system, not based on weight. I agree with that, but I’m still confused. I messaged the breeder, who is a sweet lady and very careful with her dogs. She explained that they give dogs from 1 to 80+ lbs the same size vaccine, which is why she gives her pups half a shot. This really confuses me. I’m curious, since he got that half shot on the 5th, does it not count? I really want him vaccinated. I’m worried about a reaction, but I don’t think that’s common, plus he already had that half shot. Is it too soon to give him the next full shot on Monday? And will that be his “first” vaccination out of the three? Since the half shot doesn’t count? That’s what the vet said I just need some reassurance, it’s an odd situation

Half vaccine will not guarantee immunity. I would not count it. Start your vaccines correctly at this point on until he's 16 weeks or longer if at high risk.

Jean Dodds is not an immunologist, she publishes what she believes, though, even as a general practitioner.
This cohort was ages 3-9 years old so the lack of immature immunity (or no humoral immunity) of patients somewhat invalidates the results as this study has in no way proved that the lower dose vaccinations stimulated a predictable response in a nascent immune system. It could also be assumed that no vaccine would have resulted in the same immunity since most immune systems remember a vaccine (or viral exposure) from three years to seven years.
This research has carried no weight behind closed veterinary doors (including with top holistic practitioners).

You understand immunity far better than the breeder does. I cannot tell you how many people have requested that I do this when I was general practice. I always refused because I saw several of these pups contract parvo.
Getting the recommended vaccines from here forward will protect your puppy and remember, the two most important vaccines are the two from 12 weeks and older per my university’s immunologist.
The joke in vet medicine is “getting or following the medical advice from your breeders is the same thing as getting gynecological advice from a pimp.”
PS if anyone is administering half doses of a rabies vaccine? That IS illegal in the USA.

The amount of breeders that have advised my clients to not vaccinate infuriates me

So this is a registered reputable breeder?

Listen to your vet. It takes no particular training, skill, or qualifications to let two dogs have sex.

If this were my patient, I might want to wait 10-14 days before vaccinating to ensure a good response from the half assed attempt but definitely uncharted territory

We see you have created a post with the potential topic of Parvovirus. While waiting on an answer, we suggest you look at the following resources:
Questions about the Parvovirus vaccination series can be seen in our FAQ
Information about the disease and treatment options (including experimental)
The Tl;Dr is that we cannot directly treat parvovirus, instead we support the body as it fights the infection. Dogs, especially puppies, dehydrate very quickly due to the combination of diarrhea, vomiting, and lack of appetite. Survival rates are better with hospitalization. Home treatment with subQ fluid administration is cheaper but the survival rate is not as good.
For information on cleaning
The Tl;Dr is that bleach (not color-safe version) is the primary household grade cleaning agent that kills parvovirus. However, it gets inactivated by organic material and does not penetrate well. Veterinary grade cleaning agents such as Trifectant, Rescue, or Virkon tend to do better. It is recommended that un- or under- vaccinated dogs not be allowed in the contaminated househould for a period of at least 1 year. Talk to your vet about how long parvovirus tends to last in your climate.

Why comment in AskVet with no medical knowledge?

This study included a total of 13 dogs and all the titer testing was done by the author, not an independent lab.

I briefly read through this. This is a study performed by one DVM (through this hemopet website, which looks to be pseudoscience BS designed to sell people things for their pets who don’t understand the principles of basic scientific research), with a sample size of 13, and conducted by “holistic” veterinarians. I know there are some practical, legitimate applications for things labeled as holistic in the veterinary world, but I’ve also known those who label themselves this to be vaccine skeptics, which would be a massive conflict of interest for this one study that you’re basing your opinions on (which, might I add, are irrelevant to this discussion and should not be posted as medical advice). What about the thousands of credible, well-designed studies demonstrating the exact opposite? Why throw those out the window while being completely convinced by one random paper on a pet shop website?

What you just said doesnt make sense to 99% of vets. Please don't provide advice when you dont have a basic understanding of immunology
