green eye boogie?

hi guys so i might be overthinking bc my kitty means the world to me and i get paranoid about her being sick…

so i was gone for 2 days and left her home (she has a feeder but her litter didn’t get cleaned for 2 days, i just thought she’d be best at home not boarded) i just got home and as i was brushing her i saw she had a green eye booger which i cleaned off her face…
a google search said to take her to the vet because it could be an infection, and im worried it could be because of the 2 day litter… but there’s no other signs so far she seems to be the usual energy/cuddly amounts, and no other signs, so maybe it was just a bit of dust or something? would that happen?

i checked for pink under eyes but she’s a black cat so its hard to tell, i dont think so though?

if it keeps popping up i might have to take her to the vet, but ideally id rather not have to just for this, could someone ease my mind and tell me if im overreacting or if a one off green eye boogie doesnt necessarily mean anything??

i know playing google doctor can just spike anxiety for no reason so id love to hear a second opinion

thank u sorry for rambling!!

Conflicting vet opinions on lipoma

Hello! I have a 7 year old border collie with a lipoma on his shoulder. It is hard (vet said because it is under the muscle) and quite large (maybe size of an apple). It has been tested and is benign and does not bother him. Vet said to keep an eye on him and if it continues not to bother him don’t do anything about it.

However, we moved and the new vet is of the opinion that it would be worth removing because my pup has a lot of life left at 7 years old and if it gets any bigger it will be hard to remove because of its location.

I’m torn on the best thing to do. Aside from the cost to remove it, in true border collie fashion, he is quite dramatic with any sort of injury and even a check up vet visit causes gives him severe anxiety (he takes both gabapentin and traz for a normal visit for shots etc.)

Thanks in advance for any considerations.

EDIT - The second vet who is recommending to remove it also recommends a specialist, so it wouldn’t be him doing it.

14 year old Domestic Long Hair Cat - Pancreatitis or something more?

LINK TO VISIT SUMMARY Lab Results - there are no X-Rays or other materials.

Species: Cat
Age: 14 1/4 years
Sex/Neuter status: Female - Spayed
Breed: Domestic Long Hair
Body weight: 12.5 lbs
History:

Lived with multiple cat households until 2019, then solo cat. Moved to new place 9 months ago in what will now be final home as I bought a condo.

Owner - WFH mid-30's who does travel occassionally for 3-4 days at a time and has a friend who previously lived with cat check on her. Cat is very adverse to strangers almost all of the time.

2024 - First episode of serial vomiting of dry and wet food, don't remember what tests were run then but she weighed 13.5 lbs then. Was prescribed bland diet and likely some anti nausea meds that I used pill pockets to give.

Clinical signs:

Vomiting started sunday this past week where she puked on the bed (she rarely pukes on bed, almost always goes on floor to puke) Puked up clear bile next 2 hours later on bed again.

She ate normal wet food and dry food throughout sunday without issue (normal wet food is Sheba Pate, 1 half of those snap packs. Dry food is Taste of the Wild Venison) She never had signs of overeating though she would desire and meow for wet food sooner and more often over past few months.

Monday morning wet food starts in the morning - she eats as usual - vomits all of it up 30 mins after eating - pink milkshake like consistency everywhere on the floor, 3 spots. I clean up go back to bed, she in bed with me - pukes up more bile right next to me in the bed. Continues vomiting 2-3 more times but all foam - this is the time I take her to vet urgent care by 11:30 Monday Morning.

Tests from the urgent care attached. Leaves with Hills Gastrointestinal Biome, Gabapentin liquid vial and syringe as well as 4mg Ondansetron to be given every 12 hours. 1 can of Biome food every 8 hours. I spread them out in 3rds so she doesn't eat two fast. She leaves with nausea shot and fluids shot. Also given Mirataz Transdermal application Rx - 1.5 inch strip every day for 14 days.

Long story short after this, I failed to effectively give nausea pills to her in wet food and or pill pockets, the first day she is mostly riding off the nausea shot given at the vet. The second day I attempt to give it in wet food (she didn't eat it) and then a pill pocket via insertion. she spit out the pocket treat but then actually ate it. 30 mins later she puked it up and I could tell the pill had not yet dissolved in her system as it was still very clear in her vomit in the litter box. Scout Urgent Vet then recommended hospitalization. I did the hospitalization because I was too afraid of how long she had gone without good amounts of foods and hydration and my inability to dose my cat. This was Tuesday evening.

Hospitalization took place via overnight stay from 9:45 until 1 next day where she was given anti-nausea, pain med and fluids via IV. She responded well to this and ate well at the hospital - pretty sure she wasn't give the exact script food that I had been giving her but she was out of my care. I pick her up with more Ondansetron, same duration; Cerenia, 24mg split in half, once per day, buprenorphine every 8 hours for 2 days. have a hard time getting her out to give her any medication or even attempt to - any treats or other food with pills mixed in she refuses to eat that night and into the next day.

Next day is Thursday - Mirataz was given to start that Rx again after hospital and buprenorphine in cheek with some spillage. But no nausea medication yet. She does puke up bile once in the afternoon and minimal eating, I attempt to give pill myself 3 times while cat is wrapped but wrangles out each time. I have a friend come over late afternoon to help me administer the pills orally (he does the insertion while I hold her. It works and she gets dose of Cerenia, Ondansetron - she turns around quickly and begins to drink water then food in good amounts.

Friday We continue administering the next day 6am (mirataz, buprenorphine, ondansetron) and then again at 4:15 (Cerenia, ondansetron, buprenorphine). She eats through the prescribed food Morning until 10-11 (2 cans throughout that time). She had a large bowel movement that was more consistent of diarrhea (lumpy and moist) - but then another bowel movement that is more solid later. She starts to slow down food intake considerably to nill overnight.

Saturday (today): There appears to be more bile only vomit in the litter box. I am able to get her to take orally ondansetron via small wrapped pill pocket and manual insertion. Begins eating again in modest intervals since 7:30am and modest drinks of water. She still finds herself looking at wet food often but not always eating wet food and turning around. - Bowel movement was stilly slightly moist but now is more log shaped like normal - still urinating. Spent all of morning in bed with me between eating.

I am out of the Cerenia as I wasted one half in pillpockets mixed in food and then crushing it and mixing in another wet food. so she's only had 2 days out of the 4 originally intended. still plenty of ondansetron. Still have vials of the buprenorphine as I wasn't able to administer every 8 hours during first 2 days - do I still give them? 3 left.

Visit with actual vet is this coming Wednesday - working on my skills getting her to take pills and then also having my friend come over to help until then. My main question is - based on the past 2024 issue and today - does this feel like something that might be her new normal as in like periodic flare ups? There is possibility of start of early kidney disease but can't be staged now while she is sick. The vet will be new and checking her out for the first time but I intend to now take her on a regular basis as vet prescribes to try and correct the issues she's had here.

Duration: 6 Days (1.5 day symptom onset, 4.5 days recovery so far)
Your general location: Chicago IL

My dog developed three different lumps this month.

Hello, I'm writing this post to get a separate opinion on this issue with my dog.

The problem started 2-3 months ago when I found my dog with an injury on his elbow. The night before, he was fine; we went to sleep, and the next day I heard him licking himself excessively. I ignored it at first because it's dogs something do to clean themselves. The thing is, later he came out, and I saw him with the injury on his elbow, and there he was, licking it. I was scared at first because I thought he had hurt himself on something sharp or something stung him. I started looking around the house to see if there was blood, but there was nothing. I concluded that something stung him and he bit himself until he hurt himself. Obviously I checked it and it was like a hard crater; it had a horrible smell, honestly, like the entire ocean combined. I took him to the vet to have him checked and he was indeed infected. They gave me a treatment for 2 weeks but it didn't work. I took him back and this time they told me that he needed surgery because it wasn't going to close since it was an area of a lot of movement and couldn't heal. Before the operation, they performed a puncture and sent it to the laboratory. I received the test results, which were normal, so the operation was carried out. The process was almost the same: two weeks of treatment and then taking him back for daily check-ups until the day came to remove the stitches that had been sewn up. At that time, two new lumps appeared; one looked like a swollen lymph node, but supposedly it wasn't. The thing is, the vet started removing the stitches. He began by grabbing tweezers and literally pulling on the thread, not even cutting it, When he finally removed the stitches, the wound was still open, meaning there was no healing. He believed it was due to those lumps I mentioned earlier; one had appeared next to where he had been operated on and another on his chest. He performed another puncture on the lumps, and his only opinion about it was literally, "I don't know, I don't know what it's due to, we just have to wait for the results of the puncture..." Well, I received the results and it says that the puncture they did wasn't enough and they have to do another one and maybe a biopsy to send it back to the lab.

But now my dog has a new lump near his eye, hard on top, not soft. It's terrible that a veterinarian doesn't know what to tell me, and at the same time, it's making me desperate. I'm afraid it might be something malignant, like cancer, even though he told me the first lump was benign.

I need someone to give me their opinion on what it could be.

16 y/o neutered male cat UTI 3rd round of treatment

I have a 16 year old desexed male cat. He weighs 5.7kg/12.5lbs

He has IBD, hypothyroidism, and arthritis. He takes gabapentin, tapazole, and low dose steroids. He's had IBD and hypothyroidism for ~7-5 years, so none of this is new.

On 9/11 he started inappropriately peeing around the house, passing very little and bloody pee, and appearing to be straining. We took him to the emergency vet as we were concerned about a blockage. He had no blockage and after many hours they said he had bacteria present in his urine under scope and diagnosed him with a UTI (they did not want to check for it because it is, according to them, very rare for male cat). His labs confirmed a UTI several days later as well.

We started him on amoxicillin and harder painkillers for 7 days.

His urine labs showed bacteria (rods, 26-50 HPF rated as High), blood (3+ high), protein (3+ high), RBC (11-20 HPF, high), specific gravity of 1.016, wbc (21-50 HPF high). His blood work showed a lac of 3.3, cre of 2.5 (h), glucose of 156 (h), hct of 23 (h). He had no stones or signs of crystals in his urine or radiographs.

He seemed to get better. We did the run of meds and then rescheduled a follow-up with our usual vet for blood/urine 7 days after treatment ended.

He still had rods in his urine. We did a culture this time and it's ecoli. His urine showed specific gravity of 1.014 (L), blood 2+ (h), ph 6.0 (almost low), protein negative, wbc (15-20 HPF), RBC (2-5 HPF), bacteria rods >40/HPF. Bloodwork showed slightly anemic (6.44), glucose was fine, creatinine 2.3 mg/dL (which is the high référence), uh his ALT was low but AST and ALP are normal.

Okay, we ordered the culture and started Clavacillin for 7 days while waiting on the culture. We got the report back that it was ECOLI and the vet said we could do 10-14 day run this time. I thought 14 would work, but when I went to pick up the meds they only gave me up to 10 days and didn't let me get 14 total. Fine, whatever.

Tuesday last week was 7 days after his 10 days treatment. Took him in to get his pee stolen (he is very chill at the vet, he is very good at getting a sterile extraction of urine). No bloodwork this time. Got the call on Thursday that he still showing rods in his urine (no stats as they haven't shared it with me yet). They want to do a 14 day antibiotic. Picked that up Friday and it it's more Clavacillin.

It's the 3rd round of antibiotics, on a cat with existing intestinal issues (we've been giving him Cerenia tabs every 36 hours during round 2, but he was vomiting in the week after treatment when not on the Cerenia, so I'm concerned he's getting a flare-up of his IBD). He is still eating, we have been giving him pro/prebiotics after the first round of antibiotics.

Tldr; cat's on 3rd round of antibiotics for a UTI that is not clearing up, is there a different recommended medication instead of Clavacillin? Is there any other concerning signs in his labs?

Could the vet have prescribed too much enalapril ?

Our family dog is 9 year old 5 lbs. she is a long haired Chi who recently was diagnosed with a heart murmur and MVD.

The first vet we saw said her kidneys was fine, blood was fine, and no fluid around the lungs.

My mom then found her to have a bloated belly so she took her again to the vet. This time it’s a different doctor. They prescribe her enalapril and lasix. She also is advised to sit in an oxygen chamber they sent home with us as much as possible to “soak the medication better” (vets words not mine)

The other doctor prescribed 1.25 mg of enalapril twice a day for a 5 pound dog. When I googled the max dosage it looks like it’s 1.13 mg once a day ish. We are concerned this is too much for her as she has lost her energy and her appetite after being on this medication.

Is it possible they over prescribed her? We are planning to get a second opinion as we don’t know if the vet is really prescribing a treatment plan correctly.

Ear Mites, is saline okay?

I recently got a cat and have had him for a bit over a week now. He’s started to really scratch inside his ear and shakes his head a lot. I took a look and he’s got the coffee colored debris that I learned is a possible sign of ear mites. He really goes at his ear that he cuts it sometimes.

The veterinary clinic by me isn’t open until Monday and my boyfriend and I have planned to go when it does. But until then can I clean it with warm water and saline just until we go? I just feel so bad when he shakes his head so much and scratches at it.

What medication and food has been successfully used to treat CKD and urinary incontinence?

Urinary Incontinence and CKD stage 2

My dog started leaking urine at rest on Monday. Took her in for a urinalysis and blood test on thursday. No UTI. Her kidney levels are elevated. High side of normal. SDMA 15, CREA 1.7 and BUN 27. The vet did not do her blood pressure or a UPC test and proceeded to prescribe Proin for the incontinence and Hills K/D for her kidneys. After doing my own research I will not be giving her Proin due to its chance of raising blood pressure and not being good for the kidneys. I have asked for a UPC, which she is getting Monday and blood pressure is being checked on friday(they want me to take home the blood pressure device to check her through out the weekend when she's chill and not stressed by being at the vet office). Im looking for advice on medication for the incontinence and just in general how to deal with this because my vet doesn't seem to be taking this as seriously since she is suggesting medication that would ultimately cause more damage to her kidneys.

Struggling to combat fleas

TLDR: I use Bravecto Plus. Last dose was 7 weeks. I have 2 cats (one is 9 one 19, both around 5 -7 lbs). Fleas persist even with cleaning house more than regularly, brushing/combing multiple times daily, flea meds as well as Orkin pest control in the home.

Question: 7 weeks into Bravecto Plus treatment can I maybe use a Seresto collar as booster or do I just keep fighting the difficult fight until I can redose next month?

Also: My mother bought Cassiel-Pet avermectin solution. Any professional opinions of that product? (I have not used it and not sure it's safe or any good.)

I feel absolutely horrible. It started months ago, I forgot to put a reminder on my calendar for flea prevention meds until it was too late. What I thought was more scratching due to seasonal shedding was fleas. I treated right away but have been struggling for months, I can't seem to get on top of it. I live in east central Florida, U.S. where i'm convinced fleas are built different, they are atrocious due to the sand everywhere and year round warm weather. Ruthless is an understatement.

Unfortunately, the first treatment was Advantage II in June, which I wasn't convinced would work but was a panic buy because my vet wouldn't renew our perscription without a visit and I had to do something.

I didn't have $200 right then for an office visit because I had JUST spent THOUSANDSSSSSS of dollars with them over the past few months on two of my elderly cats (one whom didn't make it which was an added $900 at an emergency vet for tests and euthanasia after a medical procedure). I brought it up to them, they were polite in saying they understand we were just there but it wasn't FOR the fleas so I needed an appointment specifically for that. I'm looking for a new vet.

I understand the need to be seen every so often for the script but she had JUST seen them them a month previous. I'm frustrated.

I got the Bravecto Plus from Vetshopmax (99.9% sure it's legit) and

treated them both 7 weeks ago. I could be wrong but I don't think this calls for another $200 vet visit, I know fleas have become resistant and are more difficult to eradicate so I'm searching for a professional opinion on next steps.

*The cats spend 99.9% of the time in my sunroom which is tile, no bedding, they love cardboard boxes which I change every few days (I get them for free), I still am cleaning the rest of the house like a lunatic though just in case. I only have 2 rooms with carpet and the cats don't go in there, I still vacuum 3 times a week, I sweep everyday anyway and can't think of anything else to be doing.

Thank you for reading and any help/advice that you guys can give.

What’s on my cat’s nose?

My cat is 15, F, domestic shorthair indoor only. She and my other cat got into a small scuffle last week and some hair was pulled out on her neck. Its almost completely back to normal, but I took her into the vet on Thursday to have a look. I also wanted to rule out that it was anything else (like ringworm) which she had a few years ago and it was awful. Vet said it didn’t look like ringworm, but we did a culture anyway to rule it out.

This morning I see this on her nose. She may have been pushing her nose against the mesh of her carrier as it kind of looks like a bruise? Please tell me it isn’t ringworm.

Cat prescribed Ovaban for anxiety.

took my cat to the vet recently because I have concerns about her being aggressive towards my younger cat - stalking, ambushing, that kind of thing (see previous post). I’m not trying to insult the vet, but I guess he had other things to attend to because he barely listened and literally had one foot out the door at one point. He prescribed my cat (10 years old, spayed, female) Ovaban. Twice a week. He gave it to her without really asking. Looking into it now, I feel like this was a really bad idea. Does anyone here have any experience with this?

Stray kitten injured

A stray cat recently had kittens on my porch. One got a pretty bad cut from a possum. I’m currently trying to call around to local animal rescue but not having much luck. Any advice to help her in the meantime. I recently had a baby so I’m not a spot for a huge vet bill unfortunately.

My boy Yuki has been having these episodes his entire life and I'm at my wits end

Hi,

I am having difficulty with my dog Yuki. He is a shiba inu of 4 years, his birthday is coming up on halloween so he will be 5 soon.

I do apologize this will be long, but I want to explain the entire history to you so you get the whole backstory.

When Yuki was about 6 months old, he got a traumatic experience. We had a couple of lovebirds who were prone to escape. I went to the store for about 30-40mins and when I got back, the lovebirds had escaped their enclosure and Yuki was nowhere to be found. The birds had pushed the bath I had put onto their enclosure off, it had fallen on the floor, and that's how they got out.

So I gathered the lovebirds and put them in their cage. I then went looking for Yuki and found him in the furthest corner of our yard, behind the shed, behind the rain barrel. He was all balled up and shaking out of fear, and it was summer so flies were buzzing around.

I gathered him and comforted him and that was that.

But Yuki wasn't himself anymore. All of a sudden, he was afraid of flies in the house and outside.

About two weeks later we noticed Yuki had scratched open his lip. He had also been chewing his right hind paw to the point it was irritated.

Having forgotten the traumatic event, we went to see our vet, and they said it was allergies. We were sent home with apoquel for it.

The apoquel never really worked very well, and Yuki had been developing severe panick attacks. At times he would be skittish, even when playing, he would suddenly sit down and having to scratch/bite his buttocks and sides.

He still does this. Like he feels an itch or something brushing his fur lightly and he has to react to it.

He developed fly-biting syndrome.

I washed him with douxo calm to soothe his skin and it would make him settle for a little bit but it was really hard to deal with.

We went back to the vets a couple of times but never found a solution.

So we went to my moms vet. At that time we had switched to cytopoint because I read apoquel wasn't to be given to pups under a year old.

Mom's vet gave him a cytopoint shot, and we told her the history.

She referred us to another vet who specialised in dogs with fear and agressive behavior.

We went to see her and she prescribed us Sertraline which we had to try for at least a month to see if it helped at all.

It did not. Yuki would still get flare ups of intense fear, fly-biting, seeing things that aren't there, following shadows, barking at things that aren't there and licking his paws raw.

At this point we stopped the Sertraline as it didn't help anyway and went back to our regular vets. We went the allergy route.

At 9 months old, Yuki got a blood test panel for environmental allergies and we put him on hypoallergenic kibble.

We had a shot made for his allergies and gave him monthly injections of immunotherapy and apoquel on the side since cytopoint did give a tiny bit of relief at the start but it didn't anymore.

It all didn't work. We gave the immunotherapy for a littly shy of 2 years. Alongside the apoquel.

As the immunotherapy didn't help, we stopped giving it after that and he had been on apoquel alone.

Being fed up we went to another vet, who prescribed us cortavance spray to put on his paws every day. And adaptil chews for when the panick is to much and so we all can sleep a bit at night.

We did see some improvement using this. Problem is adaptil only works for about 4 hours until it wears off.

Then Numelvi came out and we tried that, it didn't work at all.

Then Zenrelia came out and it has been better. But not fantastic.

I've been giving him the daily cortavance spray on his paws for almost 2 years now. The Zenrelia I have been giving since december last year.

I had an allergy calendar for him, but every year is different. He seems to be the worst in spring, also that is when all the flies and buzzing bugs are starting to come out. But other than that there is no clear pattern to be seen.

His paws are licked bare on all 4 paws. If he does have a flare up, he will lick one paw. I will treat it with Fucicort cream, and when it's healed, he will lick open another paw. And so on and so forth.

I am still a bit on the fence about the allergy diagnosis. He never has ear infections, no red belly, no real hot spots. It's only the paws, and most of the time it is one paw at a time. Sometimes 2, but never more then that.

Now the house next to us is under construction and the noise is putting a lot of stress on Yuki. He will be ok during the day but in the evening when everything has settled he is so BAD. Panick attacks and licking in the air like he has bitten his tongue or something and licking his paws and not being able to settle, looking around and always being vigilant, being hyper aware of his surrounding and barking at seemingly nothing.

Looking back i notice his episodes have always been triggered by stressful periods. So, out of desperation, I started googling...

I came onto something called focal seizures, nerve pain etc. Triggered by stress. Also the gut-brain axis. He does have less firm stools at the time, and he does once or twice a year, vomit like there is no end, I had to go to the emergency vet twice already to get him something to stop vomiting. Second time the shot didn't work enough and he had to get a second shot the day after and anti nausea meds for the coming days.

The vet kept thinking he ate something in the yard, we took x-rays of his belly but the only thing to see was a lot of air in there. I also didn't find anything remotely strange in the back yard.

So here I am, wondering, pondering, trying to help my boy find some rest.

And I want to ask the vets here what they think. Allergies? Focal-seizures? Something gut related?

What should we do? Should we visit a neurologist? A dermatologist? Leave it like this?

Please help us. Thank you.

Metronidazole

So.. My Siberian husky (6y, F, 42lbs) and German shepherd(3y, F, 60) had diarrhea bad. Shepherd started first then husky. Vet prescribed metronidazole and panta flora packets. Told us to stop pills once diarrhea stops and they should be good.

Shepherd was fine, husky was not after stopping. Took her to the ER vet since we were traveling and she was impacted and needed an enema. They represcribed metronidazole but lectured that we had to finish the full course and upped dosage to 1 1/2 pills every 12 hours for husky. All her labs and bloodwork came back normal no parasites no bad bacteria nothing. So why did one vet say stop once diarrhea stops and the other up the dose?

Cat is breathing fast and shallow

This morning, I found my 9 y/o cat Lola hunched over and breathing quick, shallow breaths, initially through her nose. I called our local vet who told me to monitor her and take her to the nearest emergency vet (4 hours away) if she started breathing with her mouth open and panting, the breathing got worse, or if she hadn’t eaten by tomorrow morning. Her mouth is now open a bit and she is still breathing the same way. I’m very scared and I want to help her. I’m also worried she’ll have difficulty breathing in my car and get very stressed for a car ride that long. What should I do?

~10 y/o cat has bloody mucus in stool, can't get to vet until Monday. What to do in the meantime?

My cat, who has a generally sensitive stomach, has had abnormal stools over the last 2 days. It looks relatively normal but towards the end gets softer and lighter with a little bit of bloody mucus. She eats reveal brand food, dry food available always and a small serving of wet food daily, and gets clean drinking water. We're gonna have to figure out the money thing somehow, but even then every vet in my entire county is closed Friday/Sunday. The nearest emergency vet is multiple hours away by car, and we don't have a car.

We're going to try and figure out how to get her in first thing Monday, but in the meantime I have no idea what to do. She's acting normal, maybe a little extra affectionate but that's typical for her. It's hard to keep track of her food and water intake with the other cat in the household always finding his way into our room, but I've seen her eating about as often as I usually do. I just want to know if there's anything at all that I can do to figure out more about what's happening, to reduce the risk, make her more comfortable if her stomach is upset, anything I can do while we wait for the local vets to open up. I fear they won't do anything anyways, the vets around here are known to charge way more than estimated while barely having any techs or services available. In that case, I would need to figure out what to do until we can find a way to get to the city and see a vet that actually has equip ment and medication.

I have a female bichon frisé that is 14 years old. She’s been getting more lethargic the past couple weeks and her appetite has slowly been dwindling. Today has been the worst with very little movement, shaking and eaten only small bits of food (even when she is offered food that normally she would gobble up).

Today a purple lump appeared on her neck. It’s about the size of a penny, smooth with purple and red coloration. It is not a skin tag but rather feels like it forming under the skin. The skin itself feels thin on the lump. It’s lower on the neck, closer to the shoulder area.

She just had a sonogram 2 days ago but that was for her stomach area as we believe she has cushings disease. She did not have any bloodwork done or any sedation given.

I am worried it something more serious like a blood clot. We will likely also go to the animal hospital as our regular vet office is closed, but it stresses her out and she has cardiac issues so we try to minimize stress as much as possible.

Dog has mass in ear canal

I recently posted about my dog (almost 10 years old, hound mix) getting frequent ear infections in one ear that were not very responsive to treatment: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskVet/s/Y24xeGKCUj

Shortly after posting this, I decided to get a second opinion. That vet immediately saw a mass in his ear canal. It’s deep, right where it curves. They referred us to a dermatologist. The soonest we could get in was the 27th. In the meantime, we have drops and an oral antibiotic, though sadly neither seem to be doing much 😞

This is not a medical issue I’ve dealt with before so I’m not entirely sure what to expect. Would the typical course of action be a biopsy? CT or MRI? Is it typical to be able to remove masses like this without removal of the ear canal? And finally, in your anecdotal experience, do these masses tend to be benign or malignant or is it really 50/50?

I know I’m not asking anything too specific here, and I trust the specialist will guide us, but the fact that this was missed for a while has me a bit anxious and wanting to make sure I’m on top of things and advocating for him. I got an export of all of his records from the old vet, and I see notes about a potential mass from January, though they did not mention that to us during our visits, so it seems it has been around since at least then.

I do have a log of all of his ear related visits since we adopted him: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1wnNQbOdBh-qjo9I-eIJqpbEc1XwB0jGf. You can definitely see the uptick in visits (I can’t believe we’ve been there 10 times this year for that alone).

Puppy has been very skittish and lethargic at the same time since spay

Hi everybody. I have a 6 month old mini labradoodle, her name is Georgie.

This past Thursday (10/15) she got spayed. The vet has prescribed her Rimadyl (Caroprofen) once every 24 hours, and Gabapentin & Trazadone, once every 12 hours. Her incision is slightly longer than most because they repaired a hernia from birth. So far her incision has been looking good, although her behavior has definitely been concerning me.

She has been urinating once, or maybe twice a day. The day after her spay I was concerned about this, so I called the vet and they said it was typical. They said to also expect she wouldn’t poop for 3-4 days post op, which she hasn’t either.

She has been sipping water when offered, and has been interested in her kibble; and other snacks like bones or a Kong. Other than that, she has been zonked mostly.

My concern is her occasionally spazzy restlessness. It appears like her incision hurts her so she’ll dart around her bed, or she’ll dart from her cage to under the bed. She almost “Hides” or looks concerned. And this morning, she was even trembling a little! Taking her out to pee has been difficult, she often jolts on the leash or lays flat on the floor and refuses to get up. She only ended up calming down after being given Trazadone. And she still hasn’t peed since 8 EST last night.

Her gums are pink, she is responsive and even licks my hand when i go over to her. I’m just concerned for my girl. I worry with her being skittish she’s going to hurt her incision, and I’m just worried about her health right now in general. She’s normal a crazy dog

In ogni caso mi sentirò in colpa

Urgent Veterinary Advice Needed for My 5-Month-Old Kitten Experiencing Repeated Seizures

Hi everyone, I’m desperately looking for help for my kitten, Mimi. He has been having repeated seizure-like episodes for the past 5 days, and his condition has deteriorated so much that I’m terrified of losing him.

Mimi is a 5-month-old male kitten. He weighed around 1.7 kg last week, but his weight has now dropped to just 1.2 kg.

Everything started on October 10, when I took him to the vet because he had a fever. He was given Streptopen (0.3 mL) and approximately 60 mL of normal saline. After about two days, at around 3:30 AM on October 13, he suddenly started having seizure-like episodes. By 11 AM, he had experienced around 7–8 episodes, one of which lasted approximately 2–3 minutes.

We took him to the vet again, and they performed a blood test, but they couldn't determine the cause. He was prescribed phenobarbital to control the seizures.

The medication I have is a 30 mg phenobarbital tablet, and I’ve been giving him one-quarter of a tablet (7.5 mg per dose).

Since starting the medication, Mimi has become extremely sleepy and barely moves. Initially, during some episodes, he could still stand and walk in circles, but now he mostly lies down and kicks his legs in the air without being able to get up.

This morning, his breathing became very slow, and he was barely responsive. As the medication's effects seemed to wear off, his breathing improved somewhat, but he is still extremely weak and barely conscious.

My biggest concern right now is that he cannot eat. He has barely been eating or drinking. Previously, he could swallow liquid food if I carefully placed it in his mouth, but since yesterday, he has become so unconscious that he cannot even swallow it anymore. I don't know how to help him, and I'm scared that he is becoming weaker because he cannot get any nutrition or fluids.

I'm worried that phenobarbital may be contributing to his extreme sleepiness and slow breathing, but I don't know whether the medication is the only reason for his condition. I'm also concerned about whether the antibiotic he received before the seizures began could be related.

I have already consulted two vets, but we still don't have a clear explanation for what's happening. I'm hoping to hear from veterinarians or anyone who has experienced something similar.

I would really appreciate any advice about the following:

  • Is there any way to help him become more alert if the medication is making him excessively sleepy? Is this level of sedation normal, or could something more serious be happening?
  • How can I safely provide nutrition and hydration when he is too unconscious to swallow? What should I do if he cannot eat on his own?
  • Could phenobarbital be contributing to his worsening condition, and what should I do about his next dose?
  • What possible causes should we investigate for seizures that started so suddenly in such a young kitten?
  • Are there any tests, treatments, or supportive care options I should specifically ask the vet about?
  • If anyone has dealt with a kitten in a similar condition, what helped, and what should I be asking the vet to check?

I know it's difficult to determine the cause without examining him, but I'm desperate to understand what might be happening and what options I have left. I just want him to become alert enough to swallow and eat again. Thank you so much for reading.

Corgi with cut on mouth that won’t heal

Pembroke Corgi
female, fixed
8 years
27lbs
Up to date on all routine vaccines
Up until now no health issues at all

Roughly a month ago I noticed my corgi was licking her paws, me, guests, furniture etc constantly, I looked at her mouth and noticed a cut and assumed perhaps it was irritating her. I made sure to sanitize her metal dishware after each use and kept an eye on it in hopes it was just an accident and with time would heal. I cleaned the wound as well.

Well it wasn’t healing as I had hoped so I brought her into her vet who suspects allergies. Switched her over to hydroxized protein food, prescribed some antibiotic pads to clean the sore and some anti itch tablets. She also is wearing a soft cone.

It’s been 10 days now and while the wound is starting to crust up, today I noticed it split in the middle again. She’s also still licking, not as much as before but if I take her cone off she still does a fair amount.

I ordered a hard cone today in hopes that maybe she just rubbed it open on something but that doesn’t solve the licking that lead to all of this. Is there something else I should be looking into? The vet mentioned at our next visit in a few weeks doing an allergy panel or referring her for an endoscopy.

What practical/comfort items or resources would you suggest for Charlie, who was just diagnosed with breast cancer?

Hello! Charlie is a 12YO spayed female DSH, diagnosed yesterday (16 October) with Grade 2 feline mammary adenocarcinoma, tubular subtype. Her only symptoms prior to surgery were two small masses on her abdomen. She has a healthy appetite, an abundance of energy, and exhibits normal grooming/litterbox/social habits. She is a lovely and affectionate little brown tabby with white, and weighs just over 11lbs. Charlie shares a home with three other cats, two neutered males and a spayed female, all adults and all but one over the age of 10).

Context:

My ex discovered the masses about two and a half weeks ago, and she had a complete surgical excision of both masses with wide margins on Monday, 5 October. She has an appointment with a board certified oncologist on Tuesday, 20 October, pursuant to Friday’s pathology result. Her presurgical CBC was unremarkable.

I’m not looking for help understanding the diagnosis or procedure or potential next steps. There’s no apparent evidence of metastasis, and so I don’t imagine there will be a need for additional near-term surgery, or even for chemo, but we’ll find out more on Tuesday.

Question:

I’m looking for suggestions from the veterinary community for comfort and care outside of any further clinical interventions. Are there things that you recommend to clients whose senior cats have been diagnosed with cancer to help keep them comfortable and offset or distract from any of the pain or discomfort of potential future interventions? Any advice is welcome, from treats to toys to devices or things that are nice to do for her or have on hand. Quality of life is our focus; practical suggestions for dealing with common issues following diagnosis are strongly invited.

We both love Charlie very much and welcome suggestions on any little ways we can prepare to help her (and ourselves) navigate this next phase of life.
