Casual Ohio St fans should be ashamed

Over 5,000 hate filled comments have showed up on Ohio St kicker Jayden Fielding’s social media since last night. Fanbase should be ashamed they’re harassing one of their own, it isn’t good for the player, team, or sport. No excuse for it, touch grass. Hope the fanbase can lift up this young man in time for their next game instead of tearing him down even more.

The fact that they've had to run ads this year telling gamblers not to send players death threats is...quite sad.

u/Jc110105 Ohio Bobcats Dec 07 '25

The fact that they could easily be traced and aren’t it even sadder. Start making an example out of keyboard warriors making these threats.

Racist comments are legal in the US. It’s still the first amendment. But they absolutely could go after them for threats

Yeah, my team has a kicker issue. Watching the game you wince, then remind yourself that these are basically still kids for the most part. One of my kids is in college and that dork almost got on the wrong bus to come home. His friend missed a flight because the dumbass decided to stay up all night and party before his 6 am flight be sure he was afraid he wouldn’t wake from his alarm. They make mistakes.

2

u/Expendable_Red_Shirt Wesleyan (CT) Cardinals Dec 07 '25

No, you can't do that. Tyrants don't deserve death threats. Only kids playing a game deserve death threats.

3

u/ImJacksLackOfEmpathy Dec 07 '25

When I advocate for harsher punishments against death threats etc, some redditors inevitably give some all-or-nothing like “WhAt sHoUlD wE Do, cArPeT BoMb tHe MiDdLe eAsT” in response to things like the South Park guys getting death threats over the Muhammad episode because it was “thousands of threats, not just a few hundred.” Like bro, start with a few dozen extremely harsh sentences, then work your way up to a few hundred and watch how making an example outta them actually brings about change instead of throwing your hands up and saying, welp, I guess we let the terrorists win again!!

1

u/dinanm3atl Florida State • Georgia Tech Dec 07 '25

They should. If it's on social media find the person. And handle business. It's unacceptable.

1

u/IsLlamaBad Iowa Hawkeyes • Sickos Dec 07 '25

I can only think of two ways to remedy the situation: An overall cultural shift in sports fandom in the US and/or prosecuting those who send death threats. I unfortunately don't see the former happening anytime soon. That costs money and resources that don't yield monetary value. People would much rather see the book thrown at those people instead.

1

u/Remote_Elevator_281 Oregon Ducks Dec 08 '25

I saw a comment somewhere about this that was along the lines of it seeming like rules or regulations are overbearing (anti sports gambling) because people forget the problems that arose when they weren’t in place.

Remove said regulations and suddenly players and coaches get death threats and there’s a near weekly betting scandal of some sort. Then people suddenly remember why those rules were put in place.

It’s probably a combo of degenerate gamblers that don’t know football at all (bc if you were shocked by Indiana winning you’re either a giant homer or an idiot) and the same losers who wanted to fire Day last year and reminisce about when the bye week was our hardest game of the year (urban years). Either way threatening a college kid as a grown adult should permanently close your DraftKings account and make you have a forced vasectomy.

Regardless of who you wanted to win if you love college football that game was a fuckin banger and expecting a perfect season is insane. If college football makes you so mad you threaten a kid work that out in therapy big dawg it’s embarrassing.

OSU has a solid football team this year for sure. But the best team they’ve played to this point has been texas or maybe Michigan. Indiana is historically good this season. And although I think OSU is probably one of the 2 best teams right now, Indiana is the other and that’s how it is supposed to look when 1 and 2 play each other. Turns out Indiana was 1 not 2. Hopeful for a rematch in the natty! Or maybe I’m wrong and Georgia is gonna embarrass everyone but 😂

You’re right. I’ve seen live odds at -114 both ways, but have yet to see anything pregame that doesn’t average to -110.

1

u/Proteinchugger Penn State Nittany Lions Dec 07 '25

That’s not true outside of live betting. Pregame it still averages to -110. The promos are basically all parlay based (sportsbooks make a killing on parlays) or such a small amount it’s a “loss leader” so you make more bets that you lose

I have heard 90% of profits come from 10% of gamblers.

It's also much closer to being a guaranteed lose than guaranteed win

When we went to Las Vegas, long ago, we considered the amount we were prepared to lose an entertainment expense. As it was, my husband won the same amount I lost, so we broke even. Not bad for a weekend in Vegas.

Legalized sports gambling has been such a detriment to our society, especially young men. While some are able to do it in moderation, the majority of money these sportsbooks make are from a small percentage of their customers. Sure, you can blame the addicts, but the fact that these leagues shove it down everyone's throats during every single ad break is disgusting imo.

I should add this. Obviously, it doesn't excuse a damn thing when it comes to these hateful comments. I just personally feel very gross every time I see one of these ads.

u/goddamnitwhalen Oregon Ducks • Sickos Dec 07 '25

I deeply regret that I ever supported its legalization and I can’t believe I was upset when it didn’t pass in CA recently.

u/TonyTheSnowman Texas Longhorns Dec 07 '25

That just shows you have a heart and strong morals. It's not yours or anyone else's fault. The people who run this shit would have got it through no matter what. It just sucks that it ruins so many lives. I have no place to judge anyone's decisions. I feel bad for people who do it in moderation and responsibly as well. It's a fun hobby for them. I just don't believe it's worth it in comparison to the many families' lives it's ruined.

And I'm not trying to say that anyone who supports it doesn't have a heart or strong morals. I'm not trying to attack the average person like most of the folks in this sub. It's the profiteers who were already worth millions, billions, w.e before this, and continue to profit off of vulnerable people. Most of whom have no idea what they're even doing in the first place.

It's legalization could be fine, but treat it's advertising like we do tobacco.

32

u/putsch80 Oklahoma Sooners • Arkansas Razorbacks Dec 07 '25

Needs to be like cigarettes and have its advertising banned, at least during sporting events. And this doesn’t even need to be a federal law; NCAA and networks can (and should) do this on their own.

8

u/TonyTheSnowman Texas Longhorns Dec 07 '25

That would be a great compromise. The cats out of the bag it's not going away, but there should definitely be some type of guardrails in place. The way it is now, they're legit going out of their way to push it about it with no shame at all.

I also like the idea of limiting types of bets (e.g. around prop bets) and limiting it to on-site betting.

Part of the problem is having 24 hour access to betting

6

u/_c_r_w_ Tennessee Volunteers Dec 07 '25

hard agree. in a time when our society is already dealing with such a wealth discrepancy, sports gambling is jsut another way for the poor and vulnerable to send their money to those at the top that dont need it.

u/IsLlamaBad Iowa Hawkeyes • Sickos Dec 07 '25

Addiction and overcoming addiction has a lot to do with opportunity and association. There is a false narrative that willpower alone can keep people from making bad choices. Those who seemingly have the best willpower actually put themselves in positions where they limit the instances in which willpower is needed.

Gambling has gotten so out of hand. Not only should college sport gambling be illegal but so should gambling on real world things like politics. Presidential elections are whatever but the more granular you get on a topic, the fewer people it takes to influence the outcome, the more likely the fix is in.

I remember working with a guy that absolutely hated Ohio state. I asked him what team he was a fan of and he said he didn't really follow college football.. he just lost a lot of money in 2006 against Florida. Some people are just rock bottom losers

4

u/ragizzlemahnizzle Houston Cougars • Texas Longhorns Dec 07 '25

Bet all you fucking want on professional sports, but betting on college sports is a different type of fucked up. Wagering on your money on a bunch of 18-23 year olds smh. I bet some of those people abusing him online had a son or nephew around Fielding’s age.

5

u/Citizen51 Ohio State Buckeyes Dec 07 '25

They aren't OSU fans even if they say they are. Those fake fans can go kick rocks and leave the sport completely.

1

u/gwaydms SMU Mustangs Dec 07 '25

That was a hard-fought game, and a true CFB fan would have enjoyed the hell out of it, mistakes aside. (I can understand if you didn't enjoy it quite as much. But that's the kind of game I love to see, regardless of outcome.)

9

u/ShockMental6476 Ohio State Buckeyes Dec 07 '25

Yeah OSU fans know what it is with Fielding at this point. Good kid but not the first time he's choked a big game away. Also this loss doesn't mean much at all to us lol we'll still get a CFP bye, just slightly affects 2nd round matchups. IU can have the Big 10 title.

It's mostly degenerate betters that would be shocked and unhinged enough to send threats.

2

u/BuckedUpBuckeye614 Ohio State Buckeyes • The Game Dec 07 '25

Yeah, I knew people would do it after I seen it but for it to be that many Buckeyes I cant see. Every school has that lunatic fringe, but the majority of us are not bad. Ultimately, I posted on FB that we should go for it and go down in a blaze of glory before the kick, I had that feeling. Fielding hasnt been great at FG. Regular games and mediocre distance, yeah. Close games any distance, no. As I said before, our ST is lacking. Theres college teams kicking NFL distance FGs out there.

2

u/BeNiceBeChill Dec 07 '25

Gambling certainly adds to/is part of it but fandom allegiance had people killed over Alabama Auburn years back and there's the one guy who poisoned those trees. Bill Buckner was sent death threats. The soccer player who own-goaled was murdered. These things are unfortunately an evil of the human condition and also not isolated to sports. We are all children of God. We all need to love each other first. Sports is play, and play IS important, but it needs to be practiced right-mindedly. We are all equally flawed beings. Hate and evil directed to anyone for any reason just stinks. Just pray for that young man but also  for the people who are sending him hate.

I'm flawed and just a lowly sinner and try hard not to weigh my sins against another's but I've found it comforting to root with this mantra in mind: I believe that we can, hope that we do, but have faith that regardless of the outcome, God's will is good.

Grant me the will to will what God wills.

1

u/gwaydms SMU Mustangs Dec 07 '25

The soccer player who own-goaled was murdered.

By someone connected with a crime syndicate.

2

u/BeNiceBeChill Dec 07 '25

Yeah for sure. I dont remember well enough if it was directly tied to gambling or due to national pride and fandom. My point was that irrational and hateful acts have occurred prior to the US mainstreaming gambling. If I were so inclined, Im guessing I could find instances where practitioners of sport were put to death thousands of years ago for merely letting down or shaming and not just for losing someone money. Either way it's all sad and not how we should treat one another, and I think that applies whether one is religous or humanist.

u/misdreavus79 Penn State Nittany Lions Dec 07 '25

I agree that gambling is reaching alcohol levels of "out of controledness" in our media, but let's not sell the fanbase short here. This is the same fanbase that forced the coach to have a security detail for himself and his family last season.

u/Skidda24 Ohio State Buckeyes • Illibuck Dec 07 '25

Yeah, unfortunately this is bigger than Ohio State so idk why we are getting singled out.

I remember clear back in the early 2000s a soccer coach encouraging one of our players not to pursue a kicking career in football. Because you miss one kick and you'll come out to your car being vandalized because someone made a bet on you not missing.

It's a shitty thing. Anyone attacking him are pieces of shit but I wouldn't be surprised if it's more people who spent their rent money on Ohio State winning.

Yeah I have to think that’s the case. I’ve got a couple group chats and about 26 combined fans of OSU in those chats (alum), absolutely none of us post shit like that on social media. It’s gamblers/t-shirt fans. I’ve got no problem with non-alum fans, after all that’s what my family is aside from me, but there’s a contingent of them that are the absolute worst.
