Mateer is living off his like 1 good year at Washington state

133

u/WestCoastToGoldCoast Washington State • Northwestern 21d ago

He only even had like 3/4 of a good season at that. The last three games were L’s at 4-6 New Mexico, at 4-6 Oregon State, and at home vs 2-9 Wyoming.

61

u/FooFootheSnew Washington State Cougars 21d ago

Transferred and got the bag. And, Cam Ward parlayed his WSU to Miami pathway perfectly into the #1 pick, so I assume Mateer thought it would go the same way.

Idk I would rather just be the king of Pullman for 3 years and get sponsored by Busch Lite, but I am a simple man.

46

u/FooFootheSnew Washington State Cougars 21d ago

At least he got us an Apple Cup, back when it still mattered more. Jayden De Laura too, if we're talking about dudes that transferred and sucked elsewhere.

Funny story about that De Laura Apple Cup. I was at a bar in Cour De Alene, Idaho, and me and my FIL were the only ones with Coug jerseys on. Surprisingly, at least a dozen people were rooting for the Huskies. And so everyone else there who had no rooting interest, so about two dozen people, mostly started rooting for the Cougs after a while. Why?

Because my drunk ass a eventually announced I'd buy shots for every time we scored a TD.

...and we scored 40 points. It was the most drunk I'd been in years, and I peed in my kid's sleeping bag at my inlaws house. The in laws had no idea why I was doing lots of laundry at 7am the next day. Go Cougs.

All the Texas fans who are worried that there will be some crazy RRR voodoo this year- let me put your mind at ease. Our offense is atrocious. Our offense has not put up 30 points against a P4 opponent since Arbuckle was hired. We are one of the worst rushing teams in the country (and have been for the past three years). That is not going to change against the #1 team in the country. We are in serious jeopardy of not scoring a TD against our biggest rival for the 3rd time in BV's tenure.

Oklahoma must have no other quarterback on the roster the way they keep running Mateer out there.

115

u/RipRaycom Clemson Tigers • ACC 21d ago

Their other QBs are a 4* true freshman, low 3* sophomore, and an FCS transfer QB who wasn’t even very good at that level. Mateer will be in unless he gets injured.

62

u/sonofacat Kansas State Wildcats • Hateful 8 21d ago

Wonder if this is a natural result of NIL/Transfer portal leading to weaker QB rooms. Seems crazy to have no other halfway decent option if QB1 goes down

32

u/ICanOutP1zzaTheHut Texas Longhorns • North Texas Mean Green 21d ago

They went all in on Mateer and the room suffered. I don’t think most teams are as bad as them

27

u/RipRaycom Clemson Tigers • ACC 21d ago edited 21d ago

Yeah it’s very difficult these days to have a good QB room when you also have an established starter. You can get a young guy from the portal who’s fine waiting a year to start but you’re probably gonna have to pay starter money to do it. If not that it’s either luck out on a guy out of HS or be lucky enough to find a decent veteran backup who doesn’t care about a starting job. Neither are easy to have.

It’s also much harder to be a freshman QB these days than it was even like 5 years ago since defenses have largely kept their safeties back and sacrificed some run defense for better coverages.

15

u/CirculationStation Mississippi State Bulldogs • AP 21d ago

You gotta at least give one of those guys a chance, because if you keep Mateer in and he keeps playing like this, you’re genuinely staring at a potential 2-10 season…

8

u/RipRaycom Clemson Tigers • ACC 21d ago

Based on how that OL and rushing attack looks, none of those guys are gonna be any better. Mateer can at least move the ball down the field before he turns the ball over. Those other QBs would probably get killed.
