There better not be any shred of positivity when this team goes 3-9. They are still among the worst power conference teams in the country.

Odom isn't the guy, and everyone is going to see it when they still haven't made a bowl in about 3 years

Tbh the fact that this game wasn’t immediately penned in as a W for Washington tells me Odom has done ok so far

The bar for the program is in hell. People were ready to build the statue after he beat Illinois 2 weeks ago

u/STL-Zou Missouri Tigers 22h ago

I agree that the bar is in hell but that’s where it is and Rome wasn’t built in a day. Drew Brees aside Purdue isn’t going to be bringing in a year 1 playoff coach

I somewhat agree but with how roster building is with the portal nowadays, if you can’t trust a coach to field a solid team in 3 years then what makes you think they ever will? The coaching side of the game is moving quicker than ever, you can get your guys in the portal. It’s not even necessarily bad reasoning it’s just that shits just too fast paced nowadays for that.

I don't think he will build Rome (a 6 win team) in 5 years.

He brought back the DC from the previous coaching staff (who was fired before the last HC) and produced likely the worst power conference defence in the country in back to back years.

Winning one or two meaningless B1G games doesn't change anything. He is staring down perpetual 3-9 seasons unless a miracle happens one of these offseasons.

I don't need a playoff coach to be content with the program. I realize Purdue sucks. I just want someone who has a realistic path to around 6 wins most years

When you go winless in conference doesn’t every win have meaning?

1

u/Advanced_Gold1290 Purdue Boilermakers 5h ago

If that is where the program is going to be now, with 3-9 with a B1G win or two being a good season, then they should just get rid of the program entirely.

Where it’s going to be? Isn’t that where it’s been? You gotta start from somewhere. What does Purdue do with all the money they get from the B1G?

They were in multiple bowl games under Brohm like 4 years ago and had that 9 win season. It's insane to say that this is where the program has always been.

I agree that they should be spending more on football. They're never going to win a basketball natty, so they may as well make both teams somewhat fun to watch instead of chasing an impossible dream.

That said, Odom sure as hell won't be the guy to do it

Oh I know the Barry O experience. We thought the same and then he rattled off 6 in a row at the end of 2017 and we had a pretty good 2018. We won’t worry about 2019

Damn, this seems a bit much. 2 conference wins is a step. It’s not Odom’s fault they scheduled two tough non-conference games. If they schedule 3 non-conference games cupcakes like many schools they’re 5-2 right now

u/Advanced_Gold1290 Purdue Boilermakers 6h ago

If it is a bit much to want to occasionally make a bottom tier bowl game, then they may as well fold the fucking program.

This is an unacceptable product for any power conference team, and it has been that way for 3 years now. They are going to go 3-9. The only emotion any purdue fan should feel is massive dissapointment

This program won 9 games less than 3 years ago. If this team goes 3-9 after going 1-11 Odom isn't the guy. We'll see how they respond, but this game had all of the classic hallmarks of an Odom blunder.

Purdue fans absolutely shouldn't have much to be excited about at the moment. The only people who were truly buying into the last 2 games were people who haven't been paying attention. Most Purdue fans were cautiously optimistic, but very wary of how "real" those wins were.

You guys beat Illinois and demolished Minnesota. Your schedule is unexpectedly hard. WF, UCLA, and wisky are much better than anticipated. The Washington and PSU games are 50/50 type games. Iowa is a really tough game assuming they found their QB. Indiana, ND are title contenders.

Not sure what you're expecting but given the schedule - if you're even a step up and competitive team you could go 3-9 against this schedule. You almost beat WF.

That sounds great when you lay it out from a high level, but when you watch these games game by game you see the same issues over and over. And the defense is an absolute mess. Which by the way is headed by Kevin Kane, a DC that Purdue has already fired.

This attitude that programs are built one win at a time isn't set in reality. When programs make the right hire, the results are apparent right away. Purdue hired Brohm after a disasterous 3 years of Hazell. People thought that was going to be a long rebuild. We were in a bowl year one. We've seen bad programs recently turn things around within a couple years.

It's a fallacy to think that progress goes in 1 win then 3 then 5 then 7, etc. That's rarely how this works.

Cignetti effect

u/Thisguyamirightbro Georgia Bulldogs • Houston Cougars 11h ago

Yes this is ridiculous, Purdue is starting from 0 and doesn’t spend insane money

1

u/Advanced_Gold1290 Purdue Boilermakers 6h ago

If wanting to go better than 3-9 (what Purdue is going to go) every year requires a shit ton of money and a Cignetti-caliber coach, then they should just fold the program. That shouldn't be a monstrous ask to occasionally make a bottom tier bowl.

Odom sure as shit won't ever get them there

1

u/Thisguyamirightbro Georgia Bulldogs • Houston Cougars 4h ago

No but without those things you need time, can’t get rid of your coach every 15 games

1

u/Advanced_Gold1290 Purdue Boilermakers 6h ago

If wanting to win around 6 games takes a Cignetti-caliber coach, then why even have a football program at that point.

Wanting to not go 3-9 every year (what they are going to go) is not a huge ask. You cannot tell me with a straight face that Odom will ever get this team to a bowl, let along being competitive in the conference

0

u/ldclark92 Purdue Boilermakers 4h ago

It's not, I literally used a Purdue example in Brohm. I never said I expected Purdue to become a national championship in a year. I didn't even say a bowl game in a year. What I am saying is it is absurd that you can say with a straight face that if a Purdue coach starts off with 1-11 and 3-9 seasons that is progress.

It's not unreasonable to think a good coach can turn around a team to 4-6 wins year one and then grow.

We still get to play Maryland. Make it 4-8.

-2

u/Advanced_Gold1290 Purdue Boilermakers 22h ago

If you watched this game and think we are going to beat Maryland, I genuinely don't know what to tell you.

They aren't winning another game until week 1 next year

u/YourSchoolCounselor Purdue Boilermakers • /r/CFB Santa Claus 22h ago

Maryland lost a home game vs UCLA by 51. We lost by 14 in LA.

u/Halloooy Michigan Wolverines • Maryland Terrapins 22h ago

Oh, you’ll get smoked in the 1st quarter by one of the greatest QBs to ever wear the flag, and then come close but no cigar in the 2nd. And then the second half will start… and it’ll be like a hot knife through butter. Locks will let you run whatever practice plays you schemed up throughout the week and it will look like McVay in a super bowl. Maryland might get a pick or two from a future 5-7th round DB, but it won’t matter, Malik will be forced to hand the ball off 3 times per series; one of which is a counter play on 3rd and long where the guard gets blown up early and it goes nowhere. This is the way. Roll Terps.

3

u/Advanced_Gold1290 Purdue Boilermakers 22h ago

Oh it is absolutely going to be 60 minutes of incomprehensibly awful football that ends up being so heartbreaking one way or the other that the winning team almost ends up feeling worse about their team than the losing team. It'll be electric in probably the worst possible way

2

u/valkislowkeythicc Arizona State • Michigan 13h ago

Maybe I’m nuts but you guys didn’t look THAT bad, Washington was dealing and you guys were a few costly mistakes away from winning the game. If a couple balls were placed in a little better of a place, or a couple flags went your way instead of Washington’s, you’d be celebrating right now. Not saying your team is finally good but I wouldn’t be dooming this hard if I was a Purdue fan. Maybe I’ve just gotten too used to my two teams current state of affairs though😂

Well, the Washington people said they wouldn’t win another game after we beat them, so…🤷‍♂️

5

u/Ya-Boi-69-420 Purdue Boilermakers 18h ago

BIG If because we have some absolutely terrible teams on the schedule, but if we go 3-9 we gotta fire Odom. (Not even saying fire Kevin Kane anymore because he should've never been here in the first place. He was terrible 2 seasons ago, and he's terrible again)

2

u/etsuandpurdue3 Purdue • ETSU 22h ago

I think Tommy needs to make the call if we go 3-9 again

1

u/Advanced_Gold1290 Purdue Boilermakers 22h ago

He should, but won't because apparently winning a singular B1G game or two is a giant step worthy enough to forbid any criticism of Odom.

Everyone is just pretending it's all on Kane (don't get me wrong, a large portion is)

1

u/Danulas Purdue • New Hampshire 14h ago

Don't forget who hired Kane.

I was seeing what Brad Lambert was up to out of curiosity and he was a defensive analyst and is now back to DC at Marshall. If you wanted to hire a former Purdue DC, why not him?!

Will there be bowls in 3 years?

Especially after Cig caps it off with the impending punishment he’s going to deliver after your new AD’s comments.

1

u/Advanced_Gold1290 Purdue Boilermakers 11h ago

Respectfully, Cig has far better shit to worry about than making a point in an unloseable game
