Should i bring my cat to my new place?

Post image

I live right next to a train station. She’s an outdoor/indoor cat.

Here are the details:

My cat is currently at my mom’s house in the middle of a forest. It’s perfect for a cat to live. It’s just that my mom doesn’t like her. And my cat doesn’t like the other pets she has there. So my cat, Pebbles, isn’t very loved back there. She’s quite attached to me. I also think that’s the reason she wanders off for weeks there, because the other animals stresses her out.

The new place i’m at is very remote up in the mountains. The train station only has one active track— so every train that goes through always stops. There’s also like 4 trains going through per day. So that’s why it’s not an immediate no-no for me. If trains passed by in high speeds i would never consider bringing my cat with me. The other con is that my apartment is small. It’s a corridor. But it also has a shared kitchen and living room. So IF i noticed that she’d become restless in my room, i would let her out to hang out in the shared space. The people here loves animals so that wouldn’t be a problem.

In my own head, i think i could make it work. But i could also be biased because i love my cat and really want her with me… If i were to bring her up here, i’d buy an escape-proof harness and start with taking her on walks. The nature here is beautiful and extensive. One time i imagine i would test to go a little close to the train station and see how she reacts. She’s already shy around other people and noise so i don’t think she will like it. i don’t think she would hang around at the station if i were to let her go. I’d buy an Apple airtag to assess her whereabouts. But that’s also what i THINK. Things could change, she could get used to it in a couple of months. And then there’s a possibility that she gets scared and bolts off. She could try to hide under a stationed train! That thought makes me nervous.

The place gets a little more active with tourists since i work next to a ski hotel. But only a little. It’s not a big place at all. And the winter here is very cold. Pebbles is a cat who stays indoor most of the winter, so that makes things better for the both of us. She’s more active outdoors during summer.

If i were to try this— i’d have her on a test trial. If i notice that she hangs around the station too much then i’d return her to my mom’s house. What do you guys think? I tried to be as detailed as possible in the post and i’ll answer more in the comments if you have any more questions.

Feeding advice

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice please?

I adopted 2 Selkirk Rex adult siblings (18 months old) from a cat rescue here in the UK. I am trying to sort out their diet, they were fed a pretty cheap dry food only diet in the shelter.

The female has had a pretty poor gut. She has quite a lot of diarrhoea which I just can’t seem to sort out. She does have firmer days and then it just goes back.

At the moment I’m feeding them dry biscuits 3x a day and some wet food of an evening.

Please could anyone give me advice of what type of food I should be feeding my babies? Should I be feeding them much more wet food and only small amount of dry?

Thank you so much

I’ve been lucky enough to spend the last 11 years loving this fabulous cat. He’s a total character, completely cuddly, and he’s been through many a trial in his life (including but not limited to, surviving both a car (which shattered his jaw), and a fox (which left him limping for months following)), but he’s still retained his kittenish ways, and I couldn’t imagine life without him. Love you, Cutie-Patootie Bubsy Boi!

Posted earlier in the week about rescuing an unregistered 20-week old cat. Looking for advice.

A few days ago I posted about a young kitten we found trapped in a school. She’s around 20 weeks old, isn’t chipped or registered, and despite trying to find an owner nobody has come forward.

She’s safe with me and physically seems absolutely fine. She’s eating, drinking and using her litter tray, but she’s very timid and still won’t really let us near her. She clearly needs time, patience and consistency to properly settle and come out of her shell.

The problem is that I genuinely don’t know whether I have the capacity to give her that.

My mum lives with me and is quite unwell. She has myeloma and diabetes, is increasingly confused and is also very deaf, so I already do a lot of caring alongside working full time. I was honestly already pretty close to my limit before this little girl unexpectedly arrived.

I love cats and part of me really wants to keep her. I already care about her a lot and I want to see her become confident and settled.

But I’m also incredibly anxious about her and constantly worrying whether I’m doing enough, whether she’s frightened, whether I’m giving her what she needs and whether I actually have the emotional capacity for another living thing depending on me.

I know the first few weeks are probably the hardest, which is why I don’t want to make a decision just because I’m overwhelmed right now. But I also don’t want to keep her out of guilt if I’m already stretched too thin.

I’m not really looking for facts about shelters or rescues. I know what’s available locally. I’m more looking for advice from people who’ve been in a similar situation.

At what point do you give yourself time to adjust, and at what point do you accept that maybe you genuinely don’t have the capacity?

If you’ve ever unexpectedly taken in a kitten or cat and felt completely overwhelmed at first, did that feeling pass once they settled and you got into a routine? Or did you eventually realise rehoming was the kinder decision?

I think what I’m struggling with most is knowing the difference between “this is hard because it’s new” and “this is too much for me”.

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has been in that position.

Raw Cat Food For Sale

Recently bought Luna & Me raw cat food (Turkey and Rabbit) for my cats, but unfortunately they don’t like it. As it’s raw food that has to be kept frozen, I can’t return it, so I’m wondering if anyone here would be willing to buy it off me?

I’m in Croydon (South London), and the food would need to stay frozen during transport, so ideally someone fairly local or who can store it properly for the journey. All the packs I’m selling are unopened and have been kept frozen since delivery.

Just thought I’d try here before donating it to a local
cat charity!

I have 4 packs of Rabbit (6 individual patties per pack) and 4 packs of Turkey.

Happy to sell some or all of it.

Charities, farm cat programmes that would take in a tripod cat who doesn’t reliably pee indoors

I have a tripod kitten I found in Vietnam in a mangled condition. Her front right paw had to be amputated and she has been with me ever since. I tried to get local shelters to take her in but their condition was very poor and it looked like they were after the money and wouldn’t take care of her reliably, so she returned with me. She was already 4 months old when I found her and had grown up feral so she’s never fully comfortable around humans but will occasionally ask for bum pats. One huge struggle with her has been getting to pee her in the litter box in an apartment even after all this time. She is four years old now. She would much rather pee on clothes or fresh potting soil. I have another cat with CKD and it is becoming hard for me to manage, especially since following some personal losses and grief and employment changes I can barely take care of my own hygiene and mental health. I would love for her to find a place where she can go outside and pee in the soil and in the winter have a warm place to sleep. I am happy to make an annual contribution towards her maintenance and will travel anywhere in the UK if it means she finds the right place. Looking for advice.

Uk Food advice

Hey everyone, I have a 12 week old kitten who was on a pretty poor food diet when I got him (lots of grains and fillers. I've signed up to a few higher quality food brands, katkin, untamed and marro. He's hit or miss with katkin and untamed and loves Marro but i hear mixed opinions on them. Marro is 80%+ percent meat with prebiotics in the form of some starches. Some say its good for Ragdolls with their temperamental tummies and others don't like them, anyone able to help ?

Getting a third cat

The title sums it up really.
We currently have two cats/kittens. Ingrid (grey and white) is just over 1 year old, and goose (flame point) will be 1 in December. They took around a month to be fully happy around each other. I wouldn’t say they were very closely bonded, but they both sleep near each other and on the bed with us, they groom each other and play with each other, so they definitely like each other.

We are thinking of getting a third cat and have found one whose personality sounds like a good match for our current cats. Ingrid is very chill, likes her own space during the day but can be very affectionate on her own terms too, and is very cuddly at night. Goose is absolutely nuts and super clingy, he meows for attention, rubs on our legs and headbutts almost constantly. The cat is described as chilled out but affectionate, likes to follow you around but isn’t super playful.

We’ve thought about getting a third before but have been hesitant because we don’t want to upset the dynamic with our existing cats. Ingrid did get a bit less cuddly with us after we got goose, and has started being a bit more affectionate with us recently and we don’t want to change that. We think that this cat, being a bit more chill, wouldn’t bother Ingrid as much by wanting to play all the time like Goose does, but we wouldn’t want Ingrid and Goose’s bond disrupted.

We have a 2 bedroom apartment with 3 cat trees, some window perches, and lots of hiding spaces so I don’t think that would be an issue. We also have room to add another litter box and would feed the new kitten separately even after introducing them to Ingrid and Goose.

Has anyone got any experience introducing a third kitten? Is it a bad idea? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!

Poopy cat update - advice still needed :(

Previous thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/CatsUK/s/kuRM82bCzw

It’s now been 2 full days since I discovered my baby is having constant diarrhoea. I’ve spoken to his own vet practice both on Thursday afternoon and today in the morning. Today the receptionist spoke to a vet and got back to me with further instructions which were just to wait longer and keep giving the pro-kolin.

I’m at my wits end. He still poops every 3 hours and it’s still super liquid. Last night I thought it was starting to get a little more solid but tonight he just went and it’s slimy looking and green and super liquidy. It could be from the Pro-kolin which is green but also I read it could be bile moving through the digestive tract too fast. He’s barely eating enough currently, the only thing I can get him to eat is licky treats and microscopic pieces of chicken that I put in them but he largely licks clean. He is still drinking some but not as much as before he felt unwell. Only water now, not interested in any rehydration drinks or anything else. Yesterday he had some more food but today it’s less and he’s so mellow and constantly isolating himself from me - which could be because the paste incidents and him not trusting me but also he just looks unwell. His vets said it can take few days for this to resolve but shouldn’t his poop consistency be firming up by now? I’m so worried but everyone is telling me this is normal. Whenever he’s outside he’s more perky and will run if I try to grab him (it’s normal) but inside the house he’s so compliant and low energy 😭.

I mainly want to hear from people who have dealt with similar - how long did it take to resolve, did you have to do anything else.. I know I overthink when it comes to his health but I don’t know what to do anymore. If I rush him to the vet only to be told to wait longer that’s just stressing him out more. I was told today to wait till Monday but that’s so far away 😭

Edit: He had a runny poo again and then ran to vomit.. I will ask his vet to see him in the morning :(

First time outside and panicking

Post image
246 Upvotes

Hi fellow cat lovers,

I've had my two babies, a brother and sister, for 2 months now. They are over 4 weeks post sterilization, up to date on jabs, worms and tic meds. They just turned 6 months.

I am keen to let them outside. I know there's risks, but they both stare outside longingly, and I think overall the risk is worth it, especially as you will soon read, at least one loves the outdoors.

Today and yesterday I let the door open. Boy was surprisingly nervous and just had a little wonder before scrapering back in. Girl on the other hand has turned out to be a right outdoorsy type, ended jumping over the 7 foot fence despite being a tiny 6 month old, getting trapped in my neighbour's incredibly overgrown garden, got stuck there for a couple of hours but then had an explore around surrounding gardens while I panicked. She is tiny and I think vulnerable. Said neighbour has also informed me he will soon get a pit bull. (No hate, but dogs make me nervous in general)

Eventually she wondered back in.

Any suggestions for what to do? Catio? Cat proofing? She seems to love it outside, was rolling in the grass in joy, and in a great mood after, but I dont think my anxiety can take this every day!

(Obligatory cat pic for tax, this was first time I opened the door to outside world...no prizes for guessing who is the escape artist)

OnlyCat catflap experience?

One of our cats has started bringing in small, furry presents, so I'm debating replacing our original model SureFlap with an OnlyCat cat flap.

Anyone here have any experience of using this catflap?

Cat fouling around the house with baby about

Couple of scenarios and questions~ hopefully someone can relate?? 😭

We love our 13 year old cat Misty, but we've been having increasing trouble with her. She has been having ongoing digestive and skin issues for over a year now that we are working with our vet to fix. This manifests in her often having loose stools which we have to clean up at least twice daily from her tray. In recent weeks she has been positioning herself so that her whole body except her butt is in the litter tray resulting in poo outside on the carpet. We already have 2 of the largest litter trays (upstairs and downstairs) we can find that fits our space but she just doesn't seem to want to go in fully. Any advice on that? And best tips for getting the smell out the carpet?

The recent tipping point has been her discovering that she can jump on our kitchen counter tops which she has never done in the 4 years we've had her. This resulted in her licking some raw frangipane and having literal explosive diarrhoea all over our stairs and walls. Vets have given the all clear. Any tricks for keeping her off the work tops?

She has generally been okay with our 5 month old being around. We thought she would be scared of the new addition like she has been in the past with guests, but on his first day at home she was all over him. Sniffing and head nudges, the lot! When he has cried out she has simply just moved to a different room. We don't necessarily think she shows that she's stressed about there being someone new here but are we wrong in thinking that with this new behaviour? As a new mum I feel overwhelmed by the increasing bio hazard of it all, especially as baby is soon to start crawling. Hoping someone has been in a similar situation and can ease my dread.
