Chris Tapp spent 20 years in prison for a murder he did not commit. Four years after he was exonerated he himself was allegedly murdered inside a Las Vegas hotel room by former Republican candidate, and WWE wrestler, Daniel Rodimer. He is set to stand trial soon.
Tapp was convicted of the 1996 murder of Angie Dodge based on a coerced confession, despite semen from a different man being found at the crime scene. Genetic genealogy eventually identified Dodge’s killer in 2019, leading to Tapp’s exoneration. Tapp received a settlement from the city of Idaho Falls for $11.7 million in 2022.
In October 2023, Tapp and Rodimer attended a gathering inside a Las Vegas hotel room. Tapp allegedly offered Rodimer’s stepdaughter cocaine, leading to Rodimer allegedly attacking Tapp, resulting in severe head injuries, which Tapp subsequently died from. Rodimer is scheduled to stand trial in February 2027.

A 12-year-old told her mom her cousin, 16-year-old Aaron Moore, molested her. The investigator took over two years to forward the case to the DA, citing she had a heavy caseload. Because Moore turned 18 before the case was submitted, jurisdictional issues led to the charges being dismissed.
This story has never been reported on that I can find, but the rulings were released online.
So the issue at hand is that to transfer an aged-out juvenile to adult court, prosecutors have to prove that it was not practicable to proceed in juvenile court before the 18th birthday for a reason “beyond the State's control.” This would normally mean that the case wasn’t reported quickly, but that was not the case here. The brave 12-year-old reported the assault within weeks, and Detective Cox reported she began investigating the complaint three days later. The detective said that she mistakingly thought that Moore was a year younger than he actually was, and she was working 468 cases at the time.
Prosecutors tried to argue that “The State” only referred to the prosecutor’s office, not the detective, but that argument was rejected by the appeals court.
Moore actually pled guilty to aggravated sexual assault on a child as part of a plea deal, and the court deferred adjudication and placed Moore on 5 years of community service. This was all later thrown out on appeal.
This case has actually been cited as precedent in other cases since, including a 2020 case of a 16-year-old who allegedly killed a man during a marijuana deal. That case has since gone all the way up to the Texas Supreme Court. It set new precedent, essentially saying that if a case isn’t transferred promptly because investigators genuinely are building a complex case then a transfer to adult court can be valid, but if the state is simply dragging their feet it is not.
