In 1950 the UK executed Timothy Evans for the murder of his wife and young daughter, who were found strangled and hidden in their apartment building, based on the testimony of his neighbor John Christie. In 1953 the bodies of three women were found in Christie’s former apartment.

Christie was a serial killer who had been luring women to his apartment, gassing them with carbon monoxide, and strangling them. Christie murdered at least eight people, including his own wife. The remains of two more victims were discovered in the garden, and his wife's body was found beneath the floorboards in the front room. He later confessed to murdering Beryl Evans, though he denied killing the baby. Christie was convicted and hanged in the same prison as Evans.

The revelation that the state had executed an innocent man while relying on the testimony of the actual serial killer caused a massive public outcry. Evans was granted a posthumous royal pardon in 1966, and the miscarriage of justice played a major role in the UK's decision to suspend and eventually abolish the death penalty.

Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, 42, died on Monday, October 12, while riding the Goliath roller coaster with his son at the Georgia theme park.

Witnesses said Kariem’s son was sitting beside him when the incident occurred. His wife and daughter were watching from the ground and reportedly had no idea what had happened, while his son witnessed the tragedy unfold.

Police said Kariem was ejected from the ride shortly before 4pm, struck other passengers and fell beneath the attraction. He was found unresponsive and not breathing and was later pronounced dead. Four other people were injured.

A family friend told WSB-TV that Kariem had faced several major challenges in his life. He had survived cancer and a difficult battle with COVID-19, and he and his daughter had escaped a car fire just weeks before his death.

Kariem worked at Wesley International Academy in Atlanta and was remembered as a cherished member of the school community.

Atlanta Public Schools paid tribute to him, saying his presence and impact would be deeply missed by students, staff and everyone whose lives he touched.

Six Flags said it was deeply saddened by the incident and was cooperating fully with authorities.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
