This first date story was legendary among my friends. I realized that now, more than 10 years later, I was a people pleaser to a terrible degree. I hope this guy has a better life now.
Anyway: SET THE SCENE! I know you're going to love how long this one is.
At that time, 22F, and having gotten my first "big girl job," I went and made myself a dating profile on a website. Let's just call this website "AlrightCherub." I was regularly talking to men and women, trying to go on dates and get to know people. I wasn't overly picky at that young age, and went on dates with people I was glad I never had more than one date with. This guy was one of those guys. I think he was late 20s or early 30s.
We messaged back and forth on the app, generally just discussing common interests like video games and anime. I had a general rule that if I was at least having a decent conversation via text that I would try a date with a person to see if we vibe in person. Some of this guy's messages were awkward, but I don't mind awkward nerdy men, so I figured I'd give him a shot and at least show him a nice date. My good people, I tell you this with hindsight: trust your gut if something feels a little off. It might save you a terrible date. Please use my terrible example as a hilarious story and what not to do.
We discussed going out to dinner for sushi because he had never tried it. I loved sushi and thought this might be fun to show him a new experience. I mentioned to him that I suggested he get a "safe" dish, like chicken teriyaki or similar in case he didnt like sushi. We started going through places that were somewhat nearby him. We lived about 30 minutes apart, and he said some of his transportation was limited, so I didn't mind. I had a car and didn't mind coming to meet him.
We realized that where he lived, at the time, didn't have any decent sushi spots. The only one in that small city was really sketchy looking. So I offered to show him one in my city that I had gone to and really enjoyed. We set a date and I offered to drive him from his place to the date. (Note to other ladies: don't do this. It was dumb. I should have just picked a nearby McDonalds or literally anything else.) He mentioned that he only had access to a scooter for transport. I tried, at that time, not to judge too harshly because I was so young myself and had just gotten a decent job and my own car. There were little alarm bells going off in my head at this point, but I decided, after confirming with my friends they would check in on me before, during, and after the date that I was safe, to offer the ride to my city, 30 minutes away from his place.
So we keep chatting for about a week, because the date was set for a weekday next week. I wanted to give myself an excuse of needing to leave early because I worked early the next day. Thank goodness. He gets more awkward and starts adding in little things that aren't necessarily red flags, but just showed his interest in anime was way more serious than mine. At this point, I was on the fence about even going on the date, but this guy seemed a little sheltered and I felt like he could use grass to touch. He seemed sweet enough and like we might be friends. I was clear from that point that I was going on a date to see if we could build a friendship before anything else.
Date day comes. I leave in my car from work, taking about 30 minutes to get to his place. It's starting to rain pretty good, but it's not terrible. I get to his place, and when he stepped out of his house, I felt in that moment I fucked up. His picture he had posted was clearly from a few years ago and he had a rough couple of years. He also very much took that photo in dim lighting, so some of the features weren't super clear. My insides were yelling at me that I should roll down my window and tell him I had reconsidered. I was scared to embarrass him and myself by doing that and I didn't want to make him feel awful for clearly having some rough years and make him feel like I thought he was ugly. At that point, I decided that I was just going to show him a nice night and probably never talk to him again. This was ALSO DUMB. If you're face-palming at my actions, believe me, I am now too. But it makes for a good story.
He gets in my car, and thankfully, smells showered. He clearly tried his best to clean himself up but there's only so much you can do if you're in a rough spot. Out of his cargo pants pocket, he took his limited edition Zelda XL 3DS. Listen. I'm a huge nerd. I thought this was the coolest thing, but fucking awkward. I also had a collection at home of video games and consoles, but had never thought to show off any of my collection on a first date. From a pocket. I express that I think it's cool. It was big enough that he asked if he could leave it in the car while we went out, and I said sure. He put it in the glove box.
We started heading towards our destination. Another 30 minute drive. We chat about anime and video games. I mention all the Zelda games I loved and yadda yadda. He talks about how he lives with a nice dude who's a pastor. The drive is pretty uneventful and we get to the restaurant.
Arriving at the building, the restaurant is flanked by a couple of stores I had never paid much attention to. He gets really excited and points out that one of the stores is a second-hand video game store that was actually quite popular among the nearby cities because of their large selection. I asked if he would at least like to poke our heads in for a couple minutes to check it out. He mentioned something about how he had never been because his pastor roommate wouldn't drive them that far.
By this point, I had another pang of "wow, I really should not have gone on this date." I thought it would be super awkward to tell him that I wasn't interested in continuing the date and then having to drive him home. So I decided to just grin and bear it. It wasn't his fault that he didn't have the best life, I thought. We walked over to the video game store, the entrance being about 50 feet from the restaurant we were going to end up at. We take a quick look at the store. It was pretty cool and I was debating buying something from there that I hadn't yet been able to find, so I felt like it was a good interaction and I was at least having some fun. Some of his stories about his consoles and games he tried were showing more and more yellow flags to me, but whatever. Someone can have interests I'm not interested in.
I shit you not, in the middle of the game store, my mom calls me. I mention to my date that I wanted to take this call quick because I did actually need to talk to my mom about plans for something. I walk far away from him to take the call privately. I tell my mom I'm on a date, so our conversation would have to be short. She asks how it's going and I tell her it's one of the most awkward and terrible dates I've been on. She asks *me* "Do you need an out? I can help you by providing a fake emergency."
Bless my mom, truly. I was young and dumb and trying to hold onto the idea that I would get to show him a new experience. I had pity for this man. I should have realized that this was a bad thing and not a good thing. I tell my mom no, that I would at least continue with my date. My mom and I clear up some details about the plans for the near future, and I hang up and go back to him. I was. So. Dumb.
I don't remember what comment he made exactly, but it again hinted at his living situation and lack of dating experience. And that he didn't have the money to afford the game he was interested in. I wasn't super new to the dating game myself, but tried not to hold it against him. He was clearly awkward and lacked a lot of life experience, and our conversations were becoming more and more one sided, with him talking the most and me nodding politely along. I was starting to debate with myself internally if I should say, at this point, that I wasn't interested in continuing the date. Say something like "Hey, I'm glad we at least got to see this game store together, but I'm really not feeling it." Again, I thought it would be super awkward to drive him back after telling him that, so held back. I figured "What could another 45 minutes at dinner hurt? I'd just get the single sushi roll, so it wouldn't take long I get to show him something new, sushi, and then take him back home and never talk to him again." On the 50 feet walk back over to the restaurant, we get asked by a homeless person for some money, to which I reply I have no cash (because I truly almost never carry cash on me). My date's reply was that he didn't have any money. This should have been another red flag. Please, good people, take my example and LEARN FROM IT. Because holy hell, was I dumb.
We get into the restaurant, get seated. I tell him that I would order this beginner-friendly maki roll (it had fried shrimp and lots of other mayo and other stuff, if I remember. It was as far from raw fish as I could potentially make it)for myself that he could try. Made sure he was cool with all the ingredients and such. I suggest he should order something he knew he'd like. Something safe and something that in case he didn't like sushi, he could still enjoy. Not everyone is a fan of sushi.
The waiter comes over and brings our waters and I immediately tell the waiter, before being asked if we've decided yet, what we'd like to order. I wanted this date done and over with as quickly as possible at this point. I am white knuckling through this. He's continuing to dominate the conversation and starts to talk about his past. I'm just politely trying to nod and seem interested, but I'm definitely losing my composure a little at this point.
Oh my god. When I say that I should have listened to my gut, I really *really* should have. He explains that in the past decade or so, (remember, this is a FIRST. DATE.) he has been hospitalized in a mental institution. More than once. That his parents kicked him out because of this and other contributing factors, including him not being able to support himself. That his parents no longer talk to him really. The pastor that he lives with took pity on him and took him in and he lives in the basement. I forgot if he even had a job at that moment or not. More dumbness on my part. How did I not ask what he did for a living?
Guys. Ladies. Friends. My god. Don't talk about your sketchy past on the first date. Or maybe even the second. Or hell, maybe only talk about it when you can say you have worked on yourself and now it's a story of how you overcame your trauma. This was not the case for this man. He was clearly a loser, and I felt really terrible for him.
During this whole conversation, I am getting less responsive. I don't think he noticed how uncomfortable I was because he was terrible with social cues. He THEN. THEN. Mentions that *if* we ever have sex, it can't be at his place because of the pastor he lives with. I think I went almost completely silent at this point. I at least croak out that I don't really have sex with people until I get to know them and establish some kind of relationship, so this wasn't even something I was considering at this point. He finally gets the hint that I am not interested and terribly uncomfortable with this conversation.
Thank THE GODS that our food arrived shortly after that bomb drop. I'm holding onto every hope that we can eat quickly and that he'll enjoy the sushi, and that this experience for him will be a happy one and I will drive him home without any more conversation discussing... relations. Because oof.
He ordered something like chicken teriyaki or whatever. Rice and chicken, safe food. Uses fork to eat his food. Fine, all good and dandy. I am decent at using chopsticks, so I take a portion of my roll and put it onto a little plate and hand it over. He stops and says he's not good at using chopsticks, and I say it's not required and he can use a fork if he'd like. He wants to try chopsticks so I try to coach him a little on it. I can't remember how many times he tried or if he resorted to his fork because this part starts to really lose definition in my memory because of what happens next.
Super awkward handling chopsticks. Drops the roll a few times. It falls apart. Finally gets a good chunk of it into his mouth. And GAGS. Like, REALLY HARD.
I am an emetophobe. That means I am phobic of other people's vomit.
I am straight up panicking at this point. I stop eating immediately, turn incredibly pale. I don't even take another bite of my food. He's apologizing like crazy and says he doesn't like it. I mumble out it's not a huge deal. I flag down the waiter like mad, and ask for our check and boxes. Thank GODS for that waiter being so attentive and close. Got our check.
I excuse myself to the bathroom and take lots of deep breaths. He didn't actually throw up, so I wasn't passing out from panic or anything quite yet, but even being within 10 feet of someone gagging sends my heart rate through the roof. I'm cursing myself. Contemplating leaving him there, just paying the bill and ditching. Or not paying it and just leaving him and having him figure out how to get home. He mentioned before our date that he didn't have a ton of money and I mentioned that I'm happy to go half. I don't care if the guy pays on the first date. I've often paid for the whole bill if I'm really having a wonderful time. This was not a good time.
I gather my courage and walk back out. I sit back down. He mentions that he doesn't have ENOUGH MONEY TO EVEN COVER HIS HALF. I am at the point where I don't want to get in trouble for not paying a restaurant bill, so I pay. I decide this was my punishment for ever agreeing to this, and that I've paid money to learn a hard lesson.
We leave. It's storming out pretty bad now. Limited visibility, sheets of water. Windshield wipers at the highest speed they can go.
Normally, I am a terribly slow driver. I drive 70mph in the right lane, most of the time, just trying to stay out of other people's way and giving lots of space. My wife always jokes that I drive like a grandma. I do. Truly. I like to plan lots of travel time and never be in a hurry to get anywhere.
This time, I sped like crazy. I wanted to be done. We got in my car, and I nearly burn rubber trying to get onto the highway. I am staring straight ahead, through my windshield, strangling my steering wheel. I'm probably going about 90 mph in this storm. I have a thought in my head that I really didn't want to end up dead with this guy in my car if we crashed. I didn't want that to be the end of my life, so I slowed down to about 75mph. Which, even for me, in this storm, was pretty fast. With how little I could see in the rain, I probably should have been going AT MOST 60mph. Rain was so, so bad. I probably shouldn't have been driving at all, but I couldn't fucking stand the thought of spending any longer with this person.
All the while, I swear he's oblivious. He starts talking about one of his favorite Japanese shows, which I will omit to at least try and give this man some anonymity. It's an action show that is a bit campy, and has been around for a long, long time.
He just goes on and on, actually going through, verbally, episodes and the plots. Literally explaining story and scenes and different moves the characters used on certain bad guys. I don't remember if I even was replying at this point. It's a bit of a blur.
We finally, finally get back to his place. Nearly burning out at some stop lights and such to just get there. I mumble some sort of "well I hope you had a good time, it's getting late and I have to go to work tomorrow so have a good night." I wish I could've just told him to leave and never contact me again.
I almost peel out as soon as he shuts my car door and I am gone. I didn't look to see if he made it in his house. I didn't wave goodbye. I didn't wait. I was done. I made it. Horrible lesson learned, I was an idiot and had tried my best to show a person who had a hard life a little joy.
Hey. You remember that 3DS? In my glove box? I didn't. He didn't. I was on the highway finally and breathing a sigh of relief and driving much safer and slower in the storm. I get almost home when he messages me. About the 3DS. Still in my glove box. I curse audibly, already about to get off on my exit to home. I wait to respond, again not wanting to text and drive, especially not for this guy.
I get home and park safely. I explain that yes, it was late, (like 6 or 7pm I think?) and that I had to be at work at 4am tomorrow. This was actually true because I worked shifts from 4am to 2pm most of the time that year. I wasn't going to spend another hour, driving to and from his place, to deliver the 3DS that night. I contemplated just telling him to fuck off, his loss, but I decided against it. I discussed just mailing it to him via the post office, and he said that would take days and wasn't okay with him. Are you face palming? I was.
I agree to delivering it the next day after I was done with work. He complains but I put my foot down and said I wasn't going to drive out tonight, in the storm, another hour, just to drop it off when I needed sleep because I have to get up at 3am. He bitches about being without it for a DAY.
Anyway. I deliver it the next day. I pull up, roll down my window, and hand it to him. I don't even bother getting out of my car.
He asks "Do you think we can be friends or go on another date?"
FINALLY growing a tiny, tiny bit of backbone and I go "nope. Not going to so that." I roll my window up. And I leave.
Over 10 years later, I laugh hard at this story now. It's fun to tell. I truly hope this guy's life got better. I never did go on another date without confirming they had their own transportation, their own money, and liked the food we were getting. And now I'm getting married to someone who loves my cooking and sushi and knows how to use chopsticks.
