Now this is just an educated guess, but: Seven was studying the astral gates, Kelvin was planning and expedition to the new gate, Kelvin has a Baroness line about how he "Pushed Ettrick away for his ambition"....

He probably denied Ettrick/Seven a spot on the expedition in a... probably less than ideal way. (What with Seven talking about how he was "betrayed" and such)

IMO what he say doesnt matter as much as who he offend intentionally

also since he got called out lying by Calico on the updated convo,i wonder if he actually came up with the apotheosis experiment before he went to lost whisper and got caught intentionally or he got caught unintentionally and came up with it while jailed to get out of it
