Is Magical Artist not an instantly graspable urban-supernatural character fantasy?
It's certainly more mundane than the Rat King, the Baba Yaga or the undead Crash Test Pilot, but it's in the same ballpark as a psychic chess hustler or a sinister nurse.
i think her not being obviously magical is a big part of it. like the sinister nurse has a glowing evil eye on her bag, she is very definitely in the occult. magical artist kinda just looks like an artist.
Judgment without details is kind of the name of the game, you haven't seen her kit valve is literally telling people "Hey, look at these characters and pick which one you think is interesting." Obviously the one that is the least visually interesting would be the one people would least gravitate to and Violet Voters are acting like your crazy for not voting a character they know nothing about because her kit Might be cool. It will be obviously cause it's deadlock but still.
It's like you have five curtains each with a cool shiny new prize and then the host offers you a big fancy mystery box that even he only has the faintest idea what's inside but he really wants you to give up all your other prizes for it.

What is this even supposed to mean lmao. We don't know anything about any of the heroes.
yeah but when all you have to go off is just the key art people are going to make their decision off of first impressions alone. when shes actually in the game youll get far fewer people complaining that shes too plain and uninteresting
Violet have a bunch of strange drawings (including Rem) and the fact that she's literally going in an active battlefield with just a brush....
If you guys are gonna complain, at least complain about her boring face type and voice, not whatever bs that Paige never received for being even worse than Violet in those regards
Paige did not have remotely the same level of competition Violet is having now when she came out.
The entire point of the voting system is that we have not the slightest idea of the in depth kits and mechanics of these characters, and we're choosing off of first impressions alone.
The other five are immediately interesting on paper and it's not difficult to come up with ideas of what they could do without drifting too far into hypotheticals, so they have a good first impression, and naturally people will gravitate towards that. Violet is not so much on that same level, hanging completely on a "maybe" of what she might actually be. We could come up with theories like oooo her torn poster must mean she's some sort of demon or whatever, and look at that she has a drawing of Rem that's gotta be important but that's all very far fetched speculation. There's no doubt she'll be just as cool as the others when she comes out but let's not pretend like she's super eye catching compared to the others she's up against.
Exactly, which is why it's silly that people are suddenly talking about as if Violet being "just an artist" is an issue or "doesn't fit in deadlock" when there are many other existing characters that are in the same ballpark as her.
If we're gonna talk about her; call it what it is instead of making up other selective reasons that could apply to a lot of other characters
Yes but at the end he’s still a regular doorman which we had no knowledge of knowing his orgin from. There was no way you would guess what he is by that plain appearance.
In the vote what we saw was an otherwise normal doorman with glowing blue eyes and a bunch of lock and key motifs with the tags "Disorienting, Map Control, Mind Games", it was not hard to guess he was going to be some sort of supernatural entity in disguise even if nobody knew what the specifics would be.
The game has plenty of regular people. Trying to claim regular folks are "mixing things up" just seems a bit disingenuous when conventionally attractive normal people are the standard in basically every other form of media.
Warden is the plainest guy in the game. Nearly every other "normal" character is conventionally attractive (Pocket, Violet, Paige, Graves, Holliday), or slightly unconventional but still plenty good looking (Lash, Shiv, Mcginnis, Wraith). And this is stretching the definition of normal to characters that have nothing overtly supernatural in their outward appearance.
Cherrypicking one plain guy out of a cast of bombshells doesn't seem like an honest attempt at discourse to me.
You're missing the point here, they're not talking about how attractive they are, the comment you're replying to was talking about non-demon/ghost/god/vampire characters
Warden's design is pretty plain, but it's also outdated and slated for a full overhaul. Violet is most likely not going to change significantly before the game releases.
They still have something in their designs what make it quite obvious they are not normal people though
Like... I don't even dislike her design, she looks fine and will probably work better in-game. But she is weakest designs out of all shown, and by a lot, so it's no wonder people aren't thrilled about her
Paige doesn't have anything in her design that gives her away, neither does Pocket (oh wow, a breifcase that's closed), or Warden, or Shiv, or Venator.
I don't really care if people don't care about her, she's coming out anyway. These complaints are just so shit when they can be given to others in the cast.
that's 100% true, but people are being asked to judge her right now by giving heroes votes, and so this is what they're judging off. like i don't think many people are saying this is all she's ever going to be, just that she seems out of place at the moment especially given the other choices like the goofy skeleton or the humanoid rat.
Tbf, back when the doorman model was founded in test mode, some people also said he looked bland, since he just looks like a doorman... until his ult was founded.
I would argue the same for Holliday, and McGuinnes. Nothing outwardly noteworthy compared to the characters around them. But by being "normal" they stand out more. The ordinary humans fighting on the same terms as an immortal Electrokenetic and Doorman. Violet could be the same as page. Her magic speaks more than her design, take away her bibliomancy and Paige is just a woman who likes to read, and if her torn up Vote poster is anything to go by, there might be more to Violet than we can see.
Yeah and during his release the majority didn't care for the doorman and expected him to be last, but then the baroness voice lines leaked and people changed their minds
So this is something very cool about the human brain. Doorman looks off everything is too neat too orderly symmetrical. There's nothing human in his design. A similar model is mirage who even without the bottle you can see it's just a dude but then the bottle gives it the flair it needs.
It's a bit more than that I'd say cause like, a doorman is not as common of a character archetype compared to magic artist. It's like if instead of getting a chef character in a game it was instead the dishwasher. The novelty is intriguing
The doorman is an interesting character just because the job itself is upe uncommon and doesn't fit into any role on its own.
An artist, especially in games and online, is an overused trope and done to death in every way possible.
If she was a sculptor, mosaic artist or ceramic tile artist then there would be something interesting. But from what I can tell she is just mickey mouse from the Epic Mickey game
"The Doorman" . if she was named "The Artist" she would be more intresting
a door man is distinctly a city job putting him more in new york then a artist
key motifs, he has tons of keys and a key gun. this is more unique then another brush mage. only other key user i can think of is the keyblade. i can think of quite a few painter mages in mobas alone
