NEWBIE Returning Guitar Player

Hey there, when I was very young 10 to 13 years I played Electric Guitar and I learned to play the basics as well as some solos, I wasn’t “good” and near that.

Last week I decided to make this an hobby since I’m able to get some free time now.

I have some old 15w and 70w Amps and a Korg AX5G (which I have no clue how to use again).

I ordered a Harley Benton R-446.

My main inspo is Synyster Gates as my favorite band is A7X and Metallica, around that type of bands.

I wanted to know if someone could recommend me a place to start, a course of do or something to follow (free), instead of just wondering around.

I saw Justin Guitar Begginer Course, I don’t know if that’s the best thing to do, all the complete course.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks

PLAY The Power Gig guitar, the worst guitar ever made, being played into a Marshall DSL-20

For the uninitiated, the Power Gig guitar is a guitar/game controller released with Power Gig: Rise of the Six String, a game meant as a Rock Band or Guitar Hero competitor, but with an actual guitar. The problem, of course, is that the controller sucks and the game didn't take advantage of it.

I picked this thing up for about $50 on Ebay earlier this year alongside the game, and the stock strings really highlighted how much this thing sucks. They were a 10-46 set and felt like rubber bands. Chords sounded awful. However, last week I got around to swapping them out with a 12-56 set of Ernie Ball Cobalt Slinky strings, and tuned it down to Drop C. The result was shockingly high tuning stability and chords that actually sounded good. At home I stumbled on the right combination of pedal and amp for a nice nu metal tone, but here it's just a Marshall and a tube screamer. Enjoy!

PURCHASE Instrumental cable for acoustic guitar pickup

• Upvotes

I just installed a LR Baggs Active Element pickup which is powered by a 9V battery that is taped on the inside. What is the best and affordable instrument cable I should buy for this? Or would any mono (TS) 1/4" cable work?

QUESTION Please recommend me guitar cables that will last

I’m extremely pissed off because I have gone through like 4 different cables trying to find one that will work well, all of them seem to break or stop working.

Right now I only have one that seems to work and it still randomly cuts out when I have it plugged in to my amp(pretty sure it’s something to do with how it connects to the input).

Please tell me what cable brands will actually last and have a super good connection/grip to my amp’s input. So far I have tried using: Ernie ball flex, fender cable that came with my guitar(still sort of works), random amazon cable, and a live wire advantage(worked well then stopped working).

TLDR: my cables keep not working and I want to get some good cables that will have a strong connection to my amps input.

Is it normal to have to replace cables often?

DISCUSSION Who shifted your mindset in theory and disciplined guitar playing

Has anyone else gone down a massive theory, scale, and technique rabbit hole, only to stumble across a player/band who completely changed your mindset on the guitar?

For years, I was obsessed with fast, precise, technical players like John Petrucci and Michael Romeo. My entire focus was on

scales, theory, picking technique and clean fast playing.

Then I got into Megadeth and started analyzing Marty Friedman’s playing. While obviously incredibly technical, his lead work and Dave Mustaine's riffing rely heavily on chromaticism and pure feel rather than strictly conforming to standard scales. It felt way more written by feel rather than by technical design, even if Petrucci uses chromaticism too.

Later on, I discovered The Fall of Troy and Thomas Erak. That was a whole different world. Erak plays with what feels like total disregard for key signatures, rigid time, or even being in tune at times. Half the time he's just making noise, but it works so well. I became obsessed with his playing because it was so unpredictable and completely outside the box.

It completely changed my mindset on the guitar and music as a whole. During the time I discovered the fall of troy, I also became obsessed with heavy music (metalcore/deathcore) and discovered modern technical players like Jason Richardson who is like JP2.0 and Misha with his focus on rhythm.

Has an artist / band ever changed your belief/thoughts on music theory so much ?

PLAY My first-ever freestyle guitar solo go easy on me!

Just wanted to share my first freestyle guitar solo with you guys!

This was recorded at my local bar, so please ignore my friend's giggling and the background noise lol. I was just messing around and improvising rather than playing something rehearsed.

I'm still learning, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out for a first attempt.

I'd appreciate honest feedback! What did you like, and what should I work on next

PURCHASE Had to have this pixel guitar!

Moljolnir Stage-T Pixel Electric Guitar

Had to have this. Got it on sale. Was set up really well when it arrived. As if they set it up, then loosened the strings a bit for shipping. It came in a custom hard case and has many little "attention to detail" things that made me feel better about the purchase.

For example, the neck plate has detailed printing on it rather than just a boring metal bit. The locking tuners are a feature I've always wanted. The brass bridge has a solid feel to it. The little red pickup selector is cute. It came with good strings and a spare set, a couple of picks, adjustment tools and a couple of picks. And a little folding case to hold them.

I really like the sound and feel of the neck and pickups. I don't have any expensive guitars, but this one plays as well or better than any I have tried. I did find out that my computer puts out a lot of electrical interference, the single coil pick up much more than the guitar with the humbuckers I have been using. I tried other guitars that had both humbuckers and single coil, and I just never noticed it until now.

I have no idea what the brand name means, but for an import guitar, they have put a lot into this. It is no toy!

QUESTION Is this finish chip on my Jackson MJ Dinky repairable?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I recently noticed two small paint chips on the side of my Jackson MJ Dinky in Ice Blue Metallic. I don’t remember them being there before shipping, and I found some paint fragments inside the guitar case, so I’m guessing they happened during transportation.
The damage seems purely cosmetic, and the guitar plays perfectly fine.
I’m wondering if these chips can be repaired or touched up to match the original metallic finish.
Would this be an easy repair for a luthier, and roughly how much would it cost? Or would you recommend just leaving them alone?
I’m not looking for a perfect factory restoration, just something to cover the exposed brown spots.

QUESTION Stratocaster output jack

So, my son (13) bought a knockoff Stratocaster from a Pawn shop in our town for £20, it worked fine, it was missing the 5th fret and a B string, other than that, no issues at all, on Monday this week he took it to a professional at our local music shop and got the fret repaired and bought a string, £15 for the repair and it works perfectly, but now the bottom screw on the output jack keeps popping out, even a minor bump will knock it out, it isnt impacting his playing its just annoying because before and after playing he has to screw it back in, any tips for how to fix it?

QUESTION Fret Edge Question

I recently bought a second hand electomatic gretsch and the fret edges are bothering me. It's like they are too angular and pointy at the edge of the fretboard. Can this be fixed with by filing it down and is it a normal thing for a tech to fix?

I'm more used to the vintage smaller frets of my other guitars so when I play this one it bothers me. I need to take it for a set up anyway as I have some tuning issues

QUESTION Building speed/moving more smoothly

Im genuinely so frustrated rn. Like im really determined, dont get me wrong, but whenever i try to play solos that are kind of fast, it just feels like i cant manage to get that speed, like i tried slowing the song down and slowly adding speed to it, but it doesnt work. It feels like no matter how determined i am or how much time i spend trying to learn it, i just wont get it. My fingers just feel like theyre in slow motion and stiff (i tried relaxing too ofc.) did someone also go through something similiar? If yes, how did you manage to get past it. Its starting to really piss me off..

QUESTION Help me finding this alternative guitar tuning

Thumbnail youtu.be
1 Upvotes

Hi everybody,
I'm racking my brains trying to figure out what tuning was used in this song.
I noticed that during a live performance the guitar player used a CGDGBD aka open G/C tuning, playing a basic major chord, but the very first chord of the progression sounds slightly different from the studio version.

It should be some kind of math rock/emo tuning .

QUESTION Brand new Jet JS-300 or used Squier Affinity Stratocaster?

Hey everyone! So I currently have the option between a brand new Jet JS-300 which will in total cost 230$, or a used but in good condition (completely functional, minor scratches) Squier Affinity that will cost around 185$. I am completely torn between the two, I love the roasted maple neck of the JS-300 (honestly the biggest selling point for me) and I heard the QC is overall pretty good on Jet guitars. However the Squier is 45$ less and I could use that money towards more upgrades and whatnot. What do guys think/ recommend I do?
