AMA [AMA] Developer of T.W.I.R.L. here, a psychological horror game about identity, self-worth, and growing up in 2006. We just launched today on Steam. Ask me anything!

Hi r/Horrorgaming!

I'm Ben, the creative director of Genie Boy Games. Today, we're launching T.W.I.R.L. on Steam!

T.W.I.R.L. is a first person psychological horror game from the perspective of a 9-year-old boy in 2006 waking up in the middle of the night from a dream where some "thing" - maybe a demon - commanded him to get out of bed, go into the room down the hall, and "T.W.I.R.L." - whatever that means.

What proceeds is a series of loops where something evil draws us through this routine, changing us and the environment upon every loop, unveiling the life story of a boy who grows up maintaining a deep, dark, and potentially sinister secret.

The game takes inspiration from movies and games like I SAW THE TV GLOW, SKINAMARINK, GONE HOME, and of course, P.T.

It was made as part of a David Lynch-themed game jam for the Haunted PS1 Community, and was published under their new "Haunted Publishing Syndicate" brand!

This is our studio's first game, and we are excited to finally share this story. The journey of sharing of our game, and talking about the themes and meanings within the story has been emotionally challenging, but tremendously fulfilling. Let us be the first to admit - this is an odd story to debut with. And it's something we get reminded of especially when trying to explain it to people without giving anything away.

We hope that T.W.I.R.L. inspires players with a feeling of reassurance, hope, and a better understanding of self.

Game-related questions are optional, but encouraged.

Here's a free code to redeem the game! 84658-6LY40-J8TAJ

When I completed it a couple of months ago I found this game amazing. I am in love with the atmosphere and this damn feeling that you're completely helpless cuz you're in the middle of the ocean and you can't explain wtf is happening to y'all

End of Abyss was really fun and you should give it a shot

Gameplay: the awkwardness of the twin stick controls makes for that classic feeling of being an untrained and unprepared normal human. Missing crucial shots as the enemies slowly lumber towards you made combat tense no matter how improved your kit was. Also blindly firing through a door at a noise you hear followed by a body slumping on the ground always made me smile. The enemy respawns were slightly tedious but with all the backtracking the game requires it does at least keep your brain occupied. The exploration is great. Game has stellar environment design.

Sound: it’s amazing. Maybe the only place it falters is the weapon sounds. For a game inspired by dead space it saddened me that the weapons didn’t get noisier with upgrades. But the music stings, creature noises, and ambient hum of the abyss more than make up for it. The music will also incorporate themes of the monsters you will encounter in a particular area

Story: it’s there guess and it’s enough to keep you chugging along. I wish the notes and journal entries you found were longer. Most are only a sentence or two in length.

Visuals: incredible. So many environmental details. Every single frame has a story to tell of what went wrong and how the people caught up in it tried to react. And oh my god the containment sector is going to go down as one of the coolest and most visually striking levels I’ve ever played.

Overall vibes: this is harder to materialize but something I liked is just how oppressive this game is. From the way the characters interact and speak to each other, the nature of the abyss, and the vagueness of your mission in it I get the vibe that this is not a pleasant world to live in. It gives me a similar vibe to Cronos where the world is hell and you just exist in it long enough to die horribly and be immediately replaced.

This is a really unique experience and I love the ambition of the narrative. Each chapter is like a slightly different gameplay formula, so it always feels fresh even when it repeats locations. Very cool game.

DISCUSSION I have played almost all of Resident Evil games, yet Silent Hill 2...

Reached my limit for horror gaming, I can barely play a single hour of Silent Hill 2 remake, I only have the wooden bat and just reached Wood something Apartments and got what seems to be ammo, so hoping there's actual gun and the ammo isn't another key item, and I play light mode everything.

Perhaps the faceless monsters has something to do with it as well.

This game is so much horror for this 30 something years old guy to play for a long time, will try again later tonight and see if I can continue it.

DISCUSSION Still Wakes the Deep

Gave this game a try since it is free on PS+ right now and its very well reviewed, LOVE the vibe/atmosphere but the gameplay is realllllly boring, does it get any better in the 2nd half? Im just over 2 hours in which is about the halfway point since the game is 4-5 hours long and as much as I enjoy the story and setting the "gameplay" is pretty much walk in a straight line and follow the yellow paint. Even with the yellow paint turned to reduced (cant fully turn it off) its EVERYWHERE which feels extra unnecessary since the game is basically a straight line, could not get lost even if you wanted to. What did others think of this game? It feels more like a rollercoaster ride or interactive movie to me, and its been a cool ride so far but I am pretty surprised to see it so well received when theres really no gameplay or exploration at all you kind of just walk around while the story happens around you.

Even in 2026 System Shock 2 remains one of the best horror games

Post image

Yes, you can totally star wars the shit out of that game

I am currently replaying some oldies and made this post to say: If you haven't already - Play System Shock 2

To this day it remains one of the most atmospheric horror immersive sims. It is the granddaddy of Bioshock, Prey and Dead Space and got a banger remaster 2 years ago. It is basically a mix of an RPG, a Horror Game and very free exploration of a huge space ship (actually 2 space ships).

It's also one of the rare horror games that do not depend on darkness at all and creates a great atmosphere with it's sound design and the enemies that move very freely through the levels. There are no scripted jump scares but monster that roam through the corridors, open doors and mumble to themselves. Believe me: It is hauntingly creepy when you suddenly hear an automatic door opening behind you.

The story is very cool to and it probably has the best antagonist in horror gaming.

So yeah: If you can handle the graphics: Go for it.

What horror games can I play with a group of 5?

Hi so recently a few friends and I decided to try horror games.

At first it was 4 of us in total and we played pacify. We had alot of fun and really enjoyed the indie style of the game. Once we completed it we wanted to play another game and another friend asked to join so we played backrooms. We enjoy the scary horror style but now its like we want to play more horror games but it needs to allow 5 players. BTW we all play on ps5.

Your recommendations will highly be appreciated.

The Hunt For The Wampo

I wrote a little tactical horror game. I’m not sure if it’s a proper horror game, but it managed to scare me.

It is complete finished and released for free. I would be happy about a every comment.

Inspired by the original Wumpus Game from the late 70s, mixed with Minesweeper tactics in a first person 3D enviroment.

And the discussions are absolutely worth it. This game is a masterpiece. Signalis level of good. I was worried I wouldn’t like the 2D aspect and it was far from the truth. The ambience and world that’s built is absolutely amazing. The voice acting is incredible, the art style just hits perfectly. This game had me wanting to uncover everywhere I could and by the time it ended I wanted more. This game should absolutely be on your radar if you like Silent Hill, as it could have been called Silent Hill and I would have believed you. Seriously can’t recommend enough.

DISCUSSION Resident Evil has the best gunplay I've ever played

I dont know what it is Capcom cooks up in their lab, but it keeps me coming back all these years later. No other game series hits as well as RE does in terms of gunplay for me.

The sounds, the visuals, the attachments, i cant get enough. And it really bothers me no other series can match it. Sure, some come close like TLOU, but for me, RE just cant be topped

Edit: I'm talking about the modern games/remakes

DISCUSSION So I have a question if they made trick r treat into a game what do you think would be the best version of that horror game

For me it would be a unto dawn style or quarry with each character be connected to the others and everything they do has a consequence connected to that or what's happening around town kind of similar how like all the stories take part at the same time in the movie. Or
