REVIEW In my restless dreams, I see that town... Silver Pines

Post image
28 Upvotes

To start off, no game in many years has left me feeling such a sense of emptiness after finishing it, and at the same time, motivated me to go for the Platinum trophy (the last games to do that were Bloodborne and Mass Effect, which was a very long time ago :D)

This game brilliantly combines survival horror with the Metroidvania genre. Managing inventory space, resource management, exploration that requires some brainwork and wall-crawling, plenty of “skills”, that is, weapons and items, whose discovery unlocks new sectors of the map… It all comes together perfectly.

Add to that the stylized, beautiful graphics and a very well-composed audiovisual track, and the sense of immersion goes off the charts.

And then there’s the mystery, which intrigues you at first, then gets more and more revealed with every passing hour, continually encouraging you to find out what’s really going on… It’s a marvel. And after finishing the game, I understand the connections to the Silent Hill franchise very well.

If you’re a fan of that franchise, Silver Pines will deliver and meet your expectations. It’s a game that took me completely by surprise and has become my personal number one pick for Game of the Year. And I’m not exaggerating.

And for those with weak nerves, the game is scary, but more so because of its atmosphere. You’ll feel anxiety here due to limited resources, battles with monsters, and various strange sounds, rather than the sudden fright caused by jump scares (though it did catch me off guard twice).

And the discussions are absolutely worth it. This game is a masterpiece. Signalis level of good. I was worried I wouldn’t like the 2D aspect and it was far from the truth. The ambience and world that’s built is absolutely amazing. The voice acting is incredible, the art style just hits perfectly. This game had me wanting to uncover everywhere I could and by the time it ended I wanted more. This game should absolutely be on your radar if you like Silent Hill, as it could have been called Silent Hill and I would have believed you. Seriously can’t recommend enough.

My first project as a game dev and it is now finally released. Took me quite a while but it is finally out :) If you are into psychological/survival horror and FPS I think you would be interested. A combination of Halflife-esque design and Lychian elements. Difficulty wise I would say it's challenging.

Check it out if you are interested!: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3611760/Hypnostasis/

Horror Month 2026

Post image
66 Upvotes

I've been doing a horror binge in October every year for the last 5-6 years or so, getting to the point where finding good stuff to play is a challenge. Happy with my picks so far this year.

Played Pumpkin Panic (also played it last year, great indie game free on Steam), Bramble Mountain King, Still Wakes the Deep, and Mouthwashing so far. Going to start Silver Pines tonight which I'm excited for with all the good reviews its getting, then finish the month with the PT PC decomp port and SH Townfall.

What are you all playing for October?

DISCUSSION What’s your favorite Supermassive Games title?

Post image
18 Upvotes

Been a big fan of these games the last couple years since I randomly picked up The Quarry when it went on sale a couple years ago and have since gone and played everything from Until Dawn up to the newest DP title Directive 8020. I see these games talked about a bit but not a lot and was wondering what everyone’s favorites were? I’m partial to The Quarry and I think that’s partially since it was my first game like that.

Until Dawn is without a doubt a 10/10 classic and a lot of fun but I think House of Ashes is up there for me as the top game (other than the Quarry). Loved the setting and characters and story of that one a lot.

The Devil In Me is probably the only game I didn’t much care for, didn’t really like the characters in that one at all and while the HH Holmes idea had me interested it just didn’t stick the landing imo

before anybody mentions “Dementium II HD” that version sucks and the original developers (who are handling this release) have repeatedly mentioned disdain with it because they had nothing to do with it.

Dead Space

I want to add some games to my console, and for the first time, I want to add a horror game. I don't want to add RE because it's a franchise. I want it to be just one game. My friends have recommended dead space to me. Is it a good one? If not, Can you recommend other stand-alone games?

Which method of scaring a player do you like the most?

Post image
13 Upvotes

I’m developing my own horror game, and I’m having a problem: I can’t figure out what exactly is needed to scare the player so that they’ll enjoy the game after playing it. Obviously, good visuals and music are very important, but I’m interested in what methods (other than jump scares) can give the player goosebumps or make them feel really tense.
In my case there's even no monster, so I can't scare player with a threat of gameover.

PC Honestly, this is likely my horror game of the year.

It's got some lighthearted humor moments, but then the game will suddenly throw scary or unsettling shit at you, or both.

It's a point and click adventure game with puzzles basically, but scary shit DOES happen in this game.

I worked on this for almost three years in my free time (luckily, not completely alone the whole time), and the reception so far is making all that time feel so worth it!

Description: A psychological horror metroidbrainia set aboard the last human train, where you interrogate fellow passengers facing the end of the world. Use pure deduction to outsmart the ruthless laws of the universe and carve your own path toward its dark mysteries.

DISCUSSION What's the hardest you've ever been jumpscared in a video game?

Like I'm talking scared so hard it leaves you feeling like there's electricity running through the back of your neck, moments that put you into genuine fight or flight mode. These ended up being some of my core gaming memories, this is my hall of fame:

  • I was playing FNAF on my tablet when I was a kid, and I got the creepiest glitch. I started the night, opened up the camera and all of the animatronics were just gone, like they never even spawned to begin with, after I looked in every room and couldn't find any of them I closed the screen and Bonnie immediately jumpscared me.
  • I played amnesia, and I had finally seen one of the monsters for the first time, so I was sneaking around trying not to alert anything, and when I come around the corner there's a bunch of furniture fused halfway into the wall, which I didn't think was that weird because one of the game's core mechanics is sanity, and I'd just seen a monster, so I'm hugging the wall making my way to the door, when suddenly I get violently sucked into the wall with the rest of the furniture right at the junction where two walls touched on the other side, which is when I realized that it was actually just a glitch.
  • I'm playing subnautica below zero and I'm floating around in the lily pad biome, and if you're one of the OGs that was around in the early early access days you'll remember that sea emperors used to spawn in the lily pad biome, spoiler, I was about to figure that out. So the lily pad biome's primary feature is the gigantic lily pads, and littered on the sea bed are the frames of dead lily pads who's leaves decayed, mind you these things are gigantic, they're like half the size of a city block, so I'm floating over one, when all of the sudden it just recedes into the fog like a giant squid jetting off into the darkness of the abyss. It was not lily pad debris, it was tentacles. I am telling you I have never felt more viscerally unsafe than I did in that moment, you can't write horror like that.
  • Another one from below zero, I was in my sea truck moving through the sparse arctic, when all of the sudden it hits me that there is nothing but open ocean in every direction, and then the thalassopobia starts kicking in. I don't really know why, I think I just wanted to soak in the creepy atmosphere for a second, but I decided I was going to hop out the back of the submarine for a second, and the moment I open the door there is just a fin filling the entire screen, somehow a single glow whale managed to sneak up behind me at the exact moment I realized that the ocean felt unusually empty

Looking for psychological horror games with not a lot of combat

I enjoy stealth, running away and hiding a lot more.

Loved Alien Isolation, SOMA, Still Wakes The Deep, The Midnight Walk. Disliked: Visage

Any suggestions?

How much of a hot take is it to say that the Evil Within 1 is a better game than Resident Evil 4 (both original and remake)? Excluding the insane influence of 4, just games alone.

I consider Bioshock horror and We Happy Few looks like Bioshock. Thoughts? The idea seems great for a horror game and it is on sale.
